Description:
Pharmaceutical products for humans and animals, as well as their related metabolites end up in the aquatic environment after use. Recent investigations show that concentrations of pharmaceuticals are detectable in the order of ng/l-@mg/l in municipal wastewater, groundwater and also drinking water. Little is known about the effects, and the hazard of long-term exposure to low concentrations of pharmaceuticals for non-target aquatic organisms. This study was designed to assess the ecotoxicity of furosemide, a potent diuretic agent, and its photoproduct in the aquatic environment. Bioassays were performed on bacteria, algae, rotifers and microcrustaceans to assess acute and chronic toxicity, while the SOS Chromotest and the Ames test were utilized to detect the genotoxic potential of the investigated compounds. A first approach to risk characterization was to calculate the environmental impact of furosemide by measured environmental concentration and predicted no effect concentration ratio (MEC/PNEC). To do so we used occurrence data reported in the literature and our toxicity results. The results showed that acute toxicity was in the order of mg/l for the crustaceans and absent for bacteria and rotifers. Chronic exposure to these compounds caused inhibition of growth population on the consumers, while the algae did not seem to be affected. A mutagenic potential was found for the photoproduct compared to the parental compound suggesting that byproducts ought to be considered in the environmental assessment of drugs. The risk calculated for furosemide suggested its harmlessness on the aquatic compartment.

Customer Reviews:
Bible of S.Florida divers!.......2007-09-30
Great book with the best dive sites in South Florida, especially if you don't have a boat (nor the money) and can only do beach dives, very simply written, with excellent descriptions of the sites.
good as the old copys.......2007-07-08
i have used the book about a 100 times for dive sites
starting with the old 2nd. edition. it is very good book
to have to ref. dive sites boat, beach, springs. too bad the fl.
gov. has a steep fee on everything. when you say diving
the price goes up. keep up the good work deloach.
thanks capt. rob
Excellent Guide to the Florida Springs........2004-11-06
The book gives the location to several of Florida's hidden springs and offshore reefs, wrecks. There is also a dvd on the Florida springs available from amazon, called "Florida Springs-The Unexplored Florida." It lets you see the springs underwater. A must have book.
Customer Reviews:
Vocabulary Cartoons I and II.......2007-10-18
I have used these Vocabulary Cartoons since the first editions were available. I think the students enjoy this type of study. I have loaned many of my copies to students and colleagues. I am glad to see the extra vocab in the 2nd edition. I even have some of my own that I have added. This also makes a good project for the "talented artists" who may not enjoy studying vocab, but who learn as they provide cartoons. These students have fun as they learn. They work with students who provide the meanings and links. We highlight a synomym. The name Burchers comes to mind when I think of Vocab Study. You should invite students and teachers to submit their ideas. (I am retired, but I know this would be such a good project.)
Good, but easy.......2007-10-13
Great book, but this book is not suitable for people ages 13 and up. Many of the words, I already know. There are some that I don't know, and it does have great pictures to help you remember words.
Vocabulary Cartoons.......2007-09-16
The concept is wonderful; however, I wish there had been information on the grade level this book was desinged for. I can use some of the cartoons, but most are more suitable for gifted and talented, upper elementary, and middle school students.
Excellent resource.......2007-08-23
This is a great vocabulary supplement for our home school, for several age groups. The kids hardly notice they are learning yet retain all the words, and they enjoy it, too.
Too easy for GMAT or GRE Prep and maybe for SAT too.......2007-07-19
I like the concept and the method. I tried it with a few words, and it really seemed to work. However, some reviewers had suggested this as good preparation for the GRE (and many suggested it for the SATs). I was so disappointed when I got the book and had to get to page 68 before I found a word I didn't know. Granted, I am a reasonably well educated adult, but I don't think my vocabulary is unusually impressive. Who wouldn't know words like "shoddy", "transpire", "abduct", "elegant", and "inhabit"? There are not more than 10 words tough words among the 250 or so presented. When I took a sample GRE test recently, it included words like insouciant, sybarite, artifice, churl, obsequious, tendentious, calumniate, caviler, incentiousness, perspicuity, libertine, etc. There is nothing approaching that level of difficulty in this book. Definitely don't get this to prep for the GRE or the GMAT. I haven't taken the SAT in a long time, so I'll defer to those who know the word lists on the SAT better than I do, but I have a hard time believing that the makers of the SAT consider "survive", "dismantle", and "fetch" to be the sorts of difficult words they want to test. This books seems to be better for elementary/middle school words...?

Okay..........2002-07-24
I gave this book 3 stars, but don't get me wrong--I did kind of enjoy it. It's just that I was looking for so much more and this really didn't deliver. I've recently become interested in the sorority thing and I was hoping "Sorority Sisters" would shed some light on the subject. Unfortunately, it didn't. The book was too short with undeveloped characters that you really couldn't relate to because they just seemed so fake and manufactured. Maybe they'll develope in the following books but I don't know. And I didn't think that the story really focused on the rush week but more on the character's thoughts on being in sorority in general. That's all great and the book would be nothing without those thoughts, but if the author would have included more scenes from the actual parties, then she could have written a longer and more enjoyable book...Maybe it was just on a lower reading level than I'd thought. It's good for a quick, easy read but that's about it.
Oh It is Wonderful.......1998-03-05
Hi! I'm Mary Nixon, and 13 years old. I read this book in two days it was such a good book. Even if I'm nowhere near going to college, It tottally cool. With Molly trying her best to get in to her sister sority. Isabelle, Molly's roomate, is from another country, and is learning english.Ariel, an art student. Toby, an African American Pre-Med students. They are from all over the world, and they meet and they aren't all fond of each other at first but then they come to be bestfriends forever. If you read this book you have to read the next one, Pledge Class.
i loved it.......1998-01-31
it was very good. i couldn't put it down. in fact, i plan on reading the rest of the series. very realstic, too. i think that molly needs to drop her boyfriend. he is always following her around, and she needs to meet a new guy.
Book Description
Pressure...
Everyone knows Chloe is a shoo-in for Theta . . . at least that's what she thinks.
Elizabeth can't wait for her next date with Finn . . . but might not be so enthused if she knew what he really wanted.
Todd's suddenly single . . . too bad that campus girls aren't into townies.
Nina trades studying for partying . . . but finds snoozing in class isn't much fun.
Customer Reviews:
it was ok, thats all.......2002-02-28
this was a pretty good book. chloe is determind to get into TAT, no matter what. yeah, her measures are kind of extreme, but shes got guts. elizabeth is all stressed out about finn, and vise versa. i know they dont stay together long. (whew!) i didnt read the parts about todd- i skipped them because they were so boring. when nina gets her own dorm, she meets francesca, a spirited party girl who helps her get an instant social life. but will her grades suffer? ill recommend this to anyone who plans to join a sorority someday, enjoys romance novels, or just likes to read.
Not very Exciting.......2000-02-05
This book wasn't very good, and it was slow. The book mostly focuses around the character of Chole, and basically is annoying. The character of Chole to me is not very likeable. I'm interested to read the next book in this series called The First Time. I also found the Elizabeth and Finn storyline unbelievable in this book. Elizabeth is suppose to be a smart person, but yet she can't see through Finn's lies? Yea right. The only interesting storyline in this book is Nina's.
Rush Week (Sweet Valley University 54).......2000-02-03
I thought this book was o.k. I wasn't very impressed. The author goes a little too far with the whole Chloe saga. You will understand when you read the book. I am however looking foward to reading the next one this book leaves you waiting to see how the lives of the SVU students progress. Not much action between Elizabeth and Sam in this book.
I thought it would be better............2000-01-16
This book was a slow mover. Elizabeth might not be so happy if she knew what Finn was after but that does not seem to stop her. Chloe makes a friend but in the meantime almost talks herself out of her chance to pledge. Not much of Sam or Neil in this book. If you don't like Chloe, avoid this book since it is almost solely about her and flashing her money around. Oh, Nina moves out of the duplex too because a single comes available. That does not sound too logical because she was living in the basement having the whole floor to herself and only 1/5 of the rent but a single comes available and she leaves to go live back on campus? Don't think so. Not too much of Todd either. Hope THE FIRST TIME will be better. It is due out in February. I think it will deal with Elizabeth and her decisions about Finn. (After you read the book and what Finn is after....). ;)
