Book Description
As extreme sports have risen in popularity, snowboarding has exploded with a fame all its own that extends beyond the world of sports to music, movies, clothing, and art. The latest addition to Abrams' "Way of" series, The Way of the Snowboarder is the most comprehensive history of the sport to date, covering everything from its modest beginnings as a backyard toy to the current superstardom of youth-phenom Shaun White. An up-to-the-minute account of one of the hottest sports around, this book truly captures the thrill of the sport of snowboarding.
The Way of the Snowboarder tells the history of snowboarding by profiling the people who have been instrumental in shaping the sport as we know it. Beginning with the early innovators, such as world-renowned boarders Jake Burton and Tom Sims, this exciting book also acknowledges the big-mountain influences of Tom Burt and Craig Kelly, female riders such as Tina Basich and Tara Dakides, and the dynamic new generation of freestylers such as Terje Haakonsen and Shaun White. Featuring rare and previously unpublished images of snowboarding around the world in locations such as Chile, New Zealand, Norway, and Alaska, The Way of the Snowboarder is an inside look at this cultural and athletic phenomenon.
Customer Reviews:
I would put nothing else on my coffee table, personally.......2005-12-16
Seriously, I love this book. If you snowboard, you absolutely must own it; and if you don't, at least you can score some extra sex appeal points by displaying this baby proudly in your collection. Before I read this, I had never before realized how interesting history can be. While that sounds corny, I say it because I was calling my friends, saying, "Oh my god, listen to this" and sharing passages, quotes from riders, and other facts that this book unveils expertly. Yay, snowboarding has a history now.
Snowboarding is my favorite sport, and I say honestly that this is the best snowboard book I have ever read... Okay, it's the only one I've ever read, because it was the first one to actually capture my attention enough for me to finish it (I mean, think about it, you know that snowboarders don't read during ski season).
I liked it so much that I am getting a few as Christmas/Hanukkah gifts for my friends on the UCLA snowboard team as well. Don't tell them though, or you'll ruin the surprise.
I've been waiting for a book like this! Thanks what a fun read........2005-12-15
I really enjoyed going from back to snowboardings roots then ending up where we are today.... I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the ride or just looking for a good read.

Fast service!.......2007-09-06
I havent actually used this book yet for my class, but it arrived very quickly, and in perfect condition. It's a very cute, small book and it's a great size to fit in a purse. I'm sure that when I do actually start using this book it will be very helpful!
Hodges' Harbrace Handbook.......2002-08-11
I've been using this handbook for about 25 years, and recently realized that my edition was the 3rd, published in the 1970s! So I ordered the latest edition (14th edition), and was so pleased with my purchase. This is a handbook that lives in our office, and gets used to death (we do graphic design, copywriting, editing). Any new employee on our staff is required to at least become familiar with the table of contents (in case of emergency!), and very soon they too are heading for Harbrace's to look up something. We love it.
The Guide for American English.......2002-07-31
It never ceases to amaze me how many times some ... grammarian tries to correct my writing only to review my Harbrace College Handbook to see they're wrong and I'm right. This is the definitive guide to American English grammar. Easy to read, plenty of examples, and more importantly it even covers those gray areas of usage letting the ready know this non-standard without simply cutting you off without explanation. I have purchased the latest edition ever since I purchased my first copy as text to Advanced Composition during my undergraduate days at the University of Maryland University College. Harbrace as served me very well ever since helping me obtain a high GPA in regards to my written assignments. I have a lot of other grammar books that I look at now and then, but Harbrace remains the standard.

This is an exemplary work. It is absolutely essential to the high school level and above as a general and specific guideline to writing. I strongly recommend this book for those interested in perfecting their grammar and writing styles.

Exceptional Aid for All Writers.......2007-05-13
No writer can afford to be without this one! An excellent resource for all the grammatical rules you've forgotten since high school. I keep this beside my computer as I write.
My standby since Eisenhower........2007-04-29
I had an edition in the 1950's when I was in college, then bought the updated 5th edition in the 1960's. I have newer, bulkier books like _Chicago Manual_ of Style but for conciseness, correctness and convenience this little book is still my favorite. My advice, get an older edition if you can find it. My little book can fit in a large pocket, yet it is complete.

An old friend.......2007-03-07
Two or three millenia ago, when I first began college, the assigned handbook was the Harbrace, then in the second or third edition. Since then I have ben a military officer, a professional writer, a manager, and a teacher. Through each of these incarnations I have had the Harbrace at my elbow. I have never failed to find exactly the right advice, the right emphasis, and even the right choices to make my writing eminently readable.
Although its style is not didactic, it does present enough examples to keep both the old and the new writer from wandering off into that muddy stuff we se so often in magazines.
Buy one! That and a Strunk and White are all you need.
Book is good.......2006-10-29
Harbrace book rocks. The book was read by me and I like it. Theirs a good part when the book talked about how to not split infiitivs and I like that also, however, do'nt by this book if your all ready nice at writing, like me! C' YA.
Very complete!!!.......2002-12-05
I found this book to be a wonderful reference when writing anything from a short paper to a forty page research paper. Neither would have been possible without this text. A great buy!

Terrific Book.......2004-03-20
I have been using it for years, also - and when I lose it, I feel as though I've lost my right arm! (Oh, OK, well maybe as though I've lost my purse or something!) In fact, this paragraph is probably filled with grammatical and style errors because I can't find my Harcourt Brace (that's what it used to be called)! :- )
Review of Harbrace College Handbook (Revised 13th Edition).......2001-05-22
I have used the Harbrace College Handbook for 31 years. My first was the 5th Edition, which I keep on the top in one of my desk drawers. I used it throughout college. I bought this edition for my father, who gave me the first one, and seems to have lost his own copy (he's 86!). This edition is much thicker than the 5th one -- these books are not exactly "reading material," but a reference guide; so I haven't read it from cover to cover.
This book comes with a computer CD to install the entire book on your computer.
Excellent electronic bibliography section........1998-11-07
Excellent reference if it is necessary to constantly bibliograph infomation off the internet and other electronic sources

Been around forever for a reason.......2004-04-21
This book has been around since I was in college during the Punic Wars. However, like Strunk & White's ELEMENTS OF STYLE, it's earned its tenure for good reason: it's thorough and accessible. As a student, I garnered much, and, now, as an instructor, I find it an easy guide from which to teach. (The MLA style updates are handy, although you can find them almost anywhere these days.) For teachers and students, THE HARBRACE HANDBOOK is rapidly becoming indispensible.

Book Description
For the new millennium, Harcourt College Publishers now offers a Harbrace for everyone with the 14th edition of the HodgesÆ; Harbrace and a totally new handbook, The WriterÆ;s Harbraces. The WriterÆ;s Harbrace Handbook offers, for the first time, a writing driven approach while maintaining the hallmark of the Harbrace Handbook-solid coverage of grammar and mechanics.
Customer Reviews:
college textbook.......2007-09-27
The item was received quickly and this was important since it was for a class.
very good.......2007-02-19
If your trying to buy a book that teaches you how to write this is it. This hand book will teach you all about proper writing.
Too flashy.......2005-08-29
There is nothing that ruins a good reference book so much as over-attention to graphics. This book is very busy in both its design and implementation. Compared to other writing handbooks (particularly Diana Hacker's A Writer's Reference), this book is very hard to use. For example, the ToC for the MLA documentation section is not listed on the tab for MLA, but is buried several pages in. There are nearly 200 pages that start this book that are a mixed and confusing grab-bag of the greatest hits of rhetoric and writing, but do little to engage students in the act of crafting a written artifact. Also, after using this book for a semester, the tabs began to fray. As a teacher of first-year composition, I strongly recommend A Writer's Reference if you are looking for a user-friendly and comprehensive handbook for writing courses. This Harbrace book, which is the "Brief" version at 592 pages, is difficult to use as a teacher and as a student, and some information is nearly impossible to find (e.g. block quotation style guidelines).
Comprehensive and Convenient.......2000-11-19
Here is a terrific reference resource for anyone who frequently composes letters, e-mails, reports, etc. That is, for just about everyone. Even with various aids provided within software (eg to correct spelling), basic mistakes of grammar go undetected...and "send the wrong message" (both literally and symbolically) to recipients of what you write. Inside the front cover, the authors provide an especially handy detailed index (for questions concerning writing, grammar, effective sentences, diction, punctuation, and mechanics as well as glossaries of usage and terms) which directs their reader to the appropriate page or pages in the Handbook; on the back inside cover of the book, they then provide an equally handy list of checklists (also with page references) followed by a list of revision symbols. There are several such reference resources which will serve you well. In my opinion, this is the most comprehensive...and the easiest to use on a regular basis. I also urge you to check out Strunk & White's The Elements of Style and Stephen King's On Writing.

Product Description
David Silverberg is the worst bar mitzvah student in all of recorded Jewish history. No one can teach him until his father takes him to Rabbi Reuven Weiss, a mechanic and a rebel. This novel is the story of how they change each other s lives and how David grows to become a bar mitzvah. That was David's plan. He had silently promised himself to frighten off any Bar Mitzvah teachers that came his way, to make sure that he did not learn a thing for his Bar Mitzvah. Now that he had managed to scare off his fifth Bar Mitzvah teacher in a row, it seemed to David that his plan was proceeding well. Even so, while sitting on the living room couch, watching his father slumped in sorrow by the dining room table, David was beginning to have mixed feelings. David was indeed satisfied that his plan appeared to be heading for success...
