I can't believe I'm the first to review this book! I just expressed financial appreciation for it from Amazon.com....and I can't say enough good things about it! The prose, the underlying sensibilities, and the spirit of Gretel Ehrlich are absolutely sublime!

This book should be included in the next major time capsule as a prime example of a human spirit who in the 20th and 21st centuries who was not obsessed with money grubbing and senseless political agendas.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated and informative guide.......2007-10-09

I have a 1976 production sailboat that needs refurbishing. My needs have been established by 25-years of usage and I will swap unused bunk space for accessible storage. Michael Naujok will be my guide. I will enjoy his presence every step of the way. This is one beautiful book with clear, crisp color photographs showing the stages of fabrication, installation, and finishing. It's a very enjoyable companion.

        5 out of 5 stars Really a good manual.......2007-05-15

Boat-building is a technical area where good manuals are printed in any language, but somehow very poor about interior design and construction. This book, very practical, professionally tested and full of detailed color images, fills up the gap. The manual is intended to help both the amateur boatbuilder, both the professional carpenter. The planned interior is intended to be a medium-size one, but with the same skill you can construct a longer boat.

4 out of 5 stars A great do-it-yourself book for replacing boat interiors.......2006-10-03

Naujok started with a bare production hull for a 34 foot sailboat, and finished it to standards equal to any production yacht. Along the way he took great photos showing the details of each step. The illustrations are excellent. A great feature of this book is that it systematically takes you through the entire fitting-out process.
Like all books, this one is limited in how much information it can pack into one volume. Completing a yacht interior usually involves applying the skills of a cabinetmaker, electrician, plumber, upholsterer, etc., and while this book shows you what's involved, you'll need other materials if you're not experienced in each of these areas. Surprisingly, all of the work is done with hand tools and a limited number of portable power tools (and, I guess, a lot of patience...). Stationary woodworking machines such as tablesaw, bandsaw, and sanders would save considerable labor.
My biggest criticism has to do with the translation. The book was originally written in German, and translated in the UK. As such, much of the terminology and product names are unfamiliar in North America. For this reason you'll want to refer to other sources. But, if you're considering building or rebuilding a boat interior, books are going to be your least expense.

        4 out of 5 stars Book review.......2005-07-26

A well-written step-by-step guide for refitting a sailing vessel. The photographs were excellent. Mr Naujok included many helpful hints on projects. I had hoped for more detailed instruction on redoing headliner and ideas for modernizing an old interior than what was covered in this book. However, it is a valuable reference book for do-it-yourselfers.

        Book Description

Do you hear the siren song of the sea? Prepare for your dream voyage--by finding your perfect sailboat. It's not as hard as you think . . . when you have a master naval architect at your side.

In this one-of-a-kind book, leading boat designer Roger Marshall walks you through the process of choosing the perfect boat for your sailing lifestyle. Along the way, you will acquire a deep understanding of the many factors that go into a boat's performance, comfort, and seaworthiness, and learn how to choose among them to meet your requirements and preferences.

Marshall takes you step-by-step as he conceives and develops five prototype sailboats with widely varying design objectives: a Weekender, a Cruiser, a Voyager, a Single-Hander, and a Cruiser/Racer. The 200 illustrations "take you aboard," showing you clearly how the choices and compromises of boat design are made and what they mean to performance.

You'll learn about the features that make for a good cruising sailboat, from the basic choices (inshore or offshore), weekend or long-term cruising, occasional racing or nonracing) all the way to the finer points of hull shape and sail plan. And you'll gain a solid understanding of your sailboat-to-be: what it will do . . . what it won't do . . . and why. Seakindliness, performance, handling characteristics of different rigs, comfort on passages or weekends--it's all here, in clear language.

Beyond the basics, you will learn how to judge any sailboat, new or used, including

Plus, you'll learn how to determine in advance how much blood, toil, tears, and sweat your dream boat will cost you in maintenance (so small thing).

Best of all, you'll find Marshall's 12-page comparison table of production sailboats from all over the world, packed with information about 130 boats--length, beam, draft, displacement, ballast, sail area, fuel and water capacities, performance ratios, capsize and comfort ratios, and more, all tabulated for convenient and revealing comparisons.

With this book's help, you will board your own "ideal" vessel, satisfied that you're familiar with your boat from the masthead down and certain that it will bring you years of sailing pleasure.

1 out of 5 stars Or how to BUILD a Cruising Sailboat?.......2005-01-20

I eagerly added this book to my wish list based on it's title and found that what was inside the book was less about selecting your ideal cruising sailboat than it was about selecting a custom design, or perhaps directing the construction of your custom dream boat.

Those who have owned sailboats in the past would be less likely to choose this book than people like me, just getting started and looking for some informed help. Unfortunately, those needing this help most - people with the least experience - will be the ones least helped by it.

What was missing from this book (in my humble opinion) is a review of existing cruising sailboats, blurbs written by people who own and sail them, pros and cons about their design, sailing characteristics, and recommended modifications to make them fit various sailor's needs.

In all fairmess, I did learn about hull shapes and the like, but there was no "joining" of hull design factors to existing boats that possess these designs, making all the technical information in the book rather useless.

I'm sure many very experienced sailors will find this book fascinating and perhaps even incorporate some of the author's ideas into designs for their custom boats. Unfortunately, for the sailor looking to choose a cruising sailboat, this book falls short and is a dissapointment.

3 out of 5 stars A good book about sailboat design.......2004-09-21

I was looking for a book that would help me select a cruising sailboat, as the title suggested. This is really a book about sailboat design and design features that must be considered for different types of cruising. The book was very interesting in terms of boat design, as it lays out the "design thinking" and use-specific features in the design of five different boat types. Because we already know exactly what sort of cruising we intend to do, this book didn't get us very much further down the "choosing a boat" path. It is, however, useful in terms of helping evaluate used boats and their design features based on the important features of his "model" designs. This book will educate, but won't necessarily help you choose from the wide range of used boats that are out there. The Used Boat Guide "from the pages of Sailing Magazine" is an excellent choice if that's the sort of help you're looking for. I give it three stars only because the title is a bit misleading - a better title might be "Choosing the Right Cruising Sailboat DESIGN".

        1 out of 5 stars Choosing a Cruising Sailboat???.......2003-09-13

My review is simply that this book was mis-titled. It should have read Designing a Cruising Sailboat not Choosing. It speaks less of real boats and more about 4-5 mythical boats of which the author walks you through the design process of. If you've got lots of cash and want to see your custom design come to life this book may be for you. The author even goes so far as to say that proper boat maintenance starts when you visit your boat builder while your boat is being built and blah blah...at this point I considered the book a loss.

2 out of 5 stars Missed the boat... Or at least a chunk of it!.......2002-12-06

I eagerly dove into this book when it arrived, but... While Roger Marshall's book has some good general information about choosing a cruising sailboat, even that information is better addressed in Nigel Calder's "Cruising Handbook," or for serious interest in offshore cruising, John Vigor's "The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat." Marshall's book will be a dissapointing read for anyone that aspires to acquire a cruising sailboat with reasonable offshore capabilities at a cost that's affordable. Of course if you're wealthy, you don't need this book either, just hire Roger to design the perfect sailboat for you.

Marshall develops concept boats for five categories. The first boat is a "Weekender" of 20 to 26 feet with "sail in the bay" kinds of systems. The second category is the "Cruiser" that is 34 to 36 feet long that doesn't range beyond 30 miles from the coast. The third boat Marshall talks about is the"Voyager" that's a very comfortable 45 to 47 feet long (Are we beginning to sense the missing bits?). Then we encounter the "Single Hander," a 45 to 50 foot boat that seems specifially designed for the Around Alone racing crowd. And finally, the "Racer/Cruiser" with a design of 32 to 36 feet and seems to be a reasonable assessment of the kind of boat that will be appreciated by those that want to race with the yacht club and still enjoy some coastal journeys.

The missing chunk relates to blue water cruising or offshore sailboats of less that 45 feet. It's a disappointing omission. Especially if you consider that the average size of a sailboat that cruises away from the coast is getting larger, but only from about the 35 or 36 feet range to about 38 or 39 feet. If you are looking for a cruising sailboat that has offshore and passage capabilities and can't afford the 45' or larger "Voyager" category, you'll have to do a lot of interpolating between Marshall's design categories to glean the knowledge you're hoping to find.

5 out of 5 stars A rock solid guide for the deliberate sailor.......2001-10-20

Naval architect Roger Marshall provides a substantive guide for the cruising sailor who chooses his boats based on their suitability to his purposes. In plain language and with clear supporting diagrams, Marshall explains the fundamental principles of seaworthiness, the elements of good design, and the ever challenging balancing act between speed, comfort and cost.

I disagree with the reviews that say this book is only for cruising sailors with a large budget. I think this book is for sailors of any budget who take sailing seriously and who want to own boats that fit their exact needs. Considering how many boats are left to sit idle by their owners, it makes sense to realistically think though how one intends to use their boat and just what features are worth paying for. Frankly, most sailors will find they do not need the boat to end all boats if they only intend to putter close to shore on sunny weekends. At the same time, considering there is always the potential for a sailor to face the elements at their harshest, and considering some cruisers will want to push the envelope to its fullest, it makes sense to understand what exactly makes a sound, seaworthy boat and a worthwhile investment. I found that Marshall covers all these bases and more and I heartily recommend this book to readers.

If you are not completely happy with the standard layout of your production boat or are contemplating fitting out a new or renovated hull, this is the book for you. It shows you step-by-step, exactly how to lay pipes, teak decks, install a marine toilet, construct a chart table and navigation area, build a firm cabin table, comfortable bunks, a really practical galley, panel your cabin for comfort-and much more.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous color photos.......2001-07-02

Step by step, Naujok shows, in many colour photos, how to build and finish a boat's interior (furniture, plumbing, lining, carpeting). Very little text, but the photos are self explanatory, and they show the process, the details and the final result (often outstanding). It fills the gap left by Ferenc Maté's "From a Bare Hull", which should be an adequate complement to Naujok's (or viceversa) and Nigel Calder's Boatowner Manual.

An ideal tool for students writing research papers for psychology, sociology, business, economics, nursing, social work, and criminal justice courses, this new brief reference manual offers easy access to the APA documentation style, along with research writing basics. Unlike the bulky, expensive Publication Manual of the Psychological Association, 5/e, which is intended for scholarly researchers and can be difficult to access even in libraries, the Pocket Guide to APA Style is a convenient, portable reference that helps students write properly documented papers. In addition to thorough coverage of APA style, the book includes an overview of the research writing process entitled "Writing Scholarly Papers," two sample APA-style papers (including one experimental research paper), and three useful appendixes.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-07-09

This Pocket Guide is wonderful, and I'm recommending it to all my graduate students as a "must have" for their library.

5 out of 5 stars From MLA to APA.......2007-05-07

Although I have spent the last four years of my undergrad preparing papers in the MLA style, my final capstone class to complete my degree required APA style papers. Apparently this was to prepare me for grad school. Whatever the reason, it was a big change, but a very manageable change thanks to the Pocket Guide to APA Style.

The book was very conveniently organized and made APA style understandable. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in learning APA style or required to learn APA style. Bottom line, it's a great, handy, little book for research paper writers.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any post-secondary education student........2007-05-06

The Pocket Guide to Apa Style is a handy reference that I wish I had earlier in my academic career. It nicely augments the full APA Publication Manual and is technically accurate. The Pocket Guide sits next to my laptop and is easier to flip through then the manual. It is able to address most APA Style questions. It is not a substitute for the Manual is truly a "must have" for graduate students.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Doctoral Students.......2007-04-22

I discovered this terrific little book when I was a Ph.D. student. Now, as a doctoral faculty member at a leading online university, I continue to use it regularly and recommend it highly to my students.

Perrin's guide has saved me countless hours of poring over the writing style manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), which, by the way, is excellent, more comprehensive, and a "must own" if you are a doctoral student, but is more traditional in its organization and presentation of the material.

Perrin's book is very user friendly. It has a spiral binding, which allows you to open it to any page and lay it flat on the table while you work. More importantly, it has a convenient list inside the front cover of the most frequently used types of periodicals, books, audiovisual sources, and electronic sources, along with the pages numbers in the book where you can find the in-text and reference citations for them. This index makes finding the correct APA citations for most common reference situations quite simple.

The information presented in this guide is clear and easy to find. It is a great time saver.

                    Book Description

Someone puts his hand on my shoulder, and when I turn around my knees almost crumble. It's him.

Victoria Martin's in a bad way. Falling for Jim, the school hottie, was just the start of it; now she finds herself caught up in major plots to win him over, while at the same time getting rid of his annoyingly gorgeous girlfriend, Gloria.

So when she hears that Jim's going to be spending the whole summer on Fire Island, Victoria knows that this is her chance to be noticed and signs herself up for a summer as a mother's helper there. It's got to work! But Victoria's about to learn that first love can easily collapse into sheer disaster...

3 out of 5 stars Mothers Little helper.......2002-10-16

Victoria is spending time in a beach house, having scored a job as a mothers-helper.Between taking care of two lively kids, she is chasing after a major jerk and trying not to laugh when another boy insists that he loves her and they belong together.Warning; This isn't for pre-teens as it includes one piece of risque content.(and I don't mean the nudey beach.)

5 out of 5 stars "Victoria's dream summer is turning into a nightmare--fast!".......2002-08-03

"My First Love and Other Disasters" is one of the few books written by Francine Pascal, not some Sweet Valley or Fearless ghostwriter, and it's really too bad she doesn't write more of her own books. "My First Love..." is a really funny story about 14-year-old-going-on-15 Victoria Martin who is trying to get gorgeous Jim Freeman to fall in love with her as much as she has for him. To do this, Victoria begs her parents to allow her to work as a mother's helper during the summer on Fire Island in New York, the same vacation spot as Jim. Imagine that. :) However, Victoria never expected Jim's beautiful girlfriend, Gloria Donovan, to show up with him, or to have Jim's good friend Barry to fall for her instead, or to be stuck with two very spoiled demon spawns, who's mother hardly pays Victoria anything.

In addition to the laughs, this book is very realistic by involving such things as drug use, nudity (the scene where Victoria enters a nude beach for the first time is priceless--"wow, look at all those penises!"), profanity, etc., matters that are rarely placed in teen fiction, even though they're commonplace things in most kids' lives. In that sense, this book kind of reminded me of Judy Blume's writing (another good writer to check out).

I thought the ending was great as well, and I highly recommend "My First Love..." to preteen and older girls, especially Francine Pascal fans who want to read how she really writes.

4 out of 5 stars I know what this girl is going through!!.......2002-01-08

This book was really a good book. It describes what can go through the mind of a teenage girl in love with a boy. Something i can relate too. It also can open your mind with the out comes that may happen and warn you to be careful!! Maybe who liked isnt who you really want to be with.

5 out of 5 stars The second hilarious disaster for Victoria!.......2000-03-22

I agree with all the other reviews for this book. A breath of fresh air compared to any other teen book out there. A real shame these aren't readily available anymore. Francine Pascal may not be anything anymore with those horrid Sweet Valley books, but the Victoria series is the most hilarious set of all young adult books. A real must-read!

5 out of 5 stars This book is great........1999-01-24

My mom gave me this book out of a box of books that were her's. I threw it aside and one day picked it up. It was the best book I've read in a long time. It actually had me laughing out loud at certain parts. It's a must read for anyone.
