Customer Reviews:
Outstanding technical overview.......2004-03-18
This is an impressive book intended only for the serious student or major. I was quite pleased to find the book in my local Borders Books, although I would say it's significantly more technical than what most people would probably be looking for there. You'll need to have read at least one other introductory upper-division text or taken a course on cell biology or molecular biology to benefit from it. I have had that but as I am mainly a neurobiologist by training I was pretty rusty at this point and so I only understood about 1/2 of the book. :-)
That having been said, since the book is only about 300 pages you can use it to get a quick refresher or update on many topics as I did. Some of the topics were still familiar, such as basic DNA replication, the cell cycle, and recombination. But some of the more specialized topics weren't, such as the E. coli sigma 70 promoter, cosmids, YACS (yeast artificial chromosomes), and BACS, and RNA Pol III genes: 5S and tRNA transcription. There was also a section on oncogenes which is something I didn't know much about. The illustrations and diagrams are plentiful and are excellent too and really help supplement the text.
This book is an excellent summary of molecular biology........1998-08-26
This book is great. I was a biology major at MIT and I couldn't tell you how many lectures for my classes seemed to come write out of the book. It's certainly not enough to use by itself, but it's a great way to focus the information either prior to a lecture or even prior to a test.

Book Description
Instant Notes titles focus on core information and are designed to help undergraduate students come to grips with a subject quickly and easily.
Instant Notes in Bioinformatics describes what is possible, and the strengths, limitations and potential pitfalls of methods and analyses. The book begins by describing data generation and databases. It also discusses the newer bioinformatics problems associated with structures, expression, proteomics, interactions and pathways. The important areas in bioinformatics are covered to encourage easy learning and brushing-up.
Customer Reviews:
Concise primer. Not bad........2003-12-09
If you want a concise primer on bioinformatics, then this book may be of interest. I read this book as a review, but it seems that it may serve well for newcomers alike.
Compared to other primers such as "Developing Bioinformatics Computer Skills", this book contains less unnecessasary figures (e.g., central dogma, etc.), covers wider range of topics, tries to be less verbose.
A drawback is that there is little description at an algorithmic level (e.g., dynamic programming). However, the book does a pretty good job in conveying the main ideas about what such algorithms do and why they are needed. I like this book's concise and accurate presentation style much better than lengthy and confusing style found in many other books (e.g., Bioinformatics - David Mount). Another drawback is that font is small.
Overall, this book is not bad. I think this book's preface tells you what you can expect from this book, so below I excerpted a paragraph.
"We will tell you how to do things, but this is not a software manual for commonly used packages. They have their own manuals that are (mostly) much better than anything we could provide. Many of the methods we describe rely on quite complex mathematical, statistical or computational techniques. Often we choose not to describe these at all, but where we do we have aimed for a simple conceptual understanding."

Customer Reviews:
Instant Notes in Genetics (Instant Notes) by P. C. Winter.......2006-03-20
The book is very usefull if you use it as reference, but it doesn't explain genetics in general in a complete way, and the fact that its pages are black and white is difficult to consider it a text book for a genetics course.. I would recomended to people who study genetics and know their material well to use it as a quick reference..
Good supplement for general genetics course.......2003-02-03
This was a good reference for both my general genetics and microbiology courses. Explains molecular genetics concepts and methods very well. I would recommend this book.
Good summary and very helpful.......2001-07-22
This book is a good summary of genetics but one will need to read another book in conjunction with this one. It is great for quick reference and will suit students well as a study aid, as the authors give a set of key notes at the beginning of each chapter. The authors avoid any discussion of highly advanced topics, but instead emphasize the raw basics. However, they don't leave out some of the more exciting topics, such as population genetics, cloning, gene therapies, and the human genome project. The order of presentation is logical, with the properties of DNA beginning the book, with Mendel's laws explained based on the genetic code. In addition, this reductionist approach to explaining the biology of organisms is one that is most compatible with the requirements of sequence analysis and algorithms in computational biology. As such, this is a good set of notes for mathematicians who are moving into the area of sequence analysis and need a background in genetics.
brief and concise reference.......2000-06-27
As the title suggests, this is not meant to be a textbook of genetics. The basic purpose of this book is to put across key points and concepts in a simple, concise fashion for easy understanding. This book is most useful if you already have some exposure to genetics through classes or more traditional texts.
The strength of this book lies in its clear, brief and logical presentation of topics with good cross referencing. It would be especially useful to students before examinations when reading through lengthy texts or notes is not practical

Shorter Workouts.......2007-04-10
Get stronger and increase your range of motion with the techniques in this training manual. You won't need long workouts to see results.
It works! But Mix with other techniques aftre you max out........2007-02-10
I have been using the Static contraction and Max contraction training for about 3-4 years now.
After years of doing long work outs and never getting anywhere. I said "screw it" I am doing less and that's that. And tried this I am now in the bet shape of my life and stronger than ever. Once you get up to really high levels of weight and start to feel it in your joints more I would reccomend back the weight down and then working in a wider range of motion which I have done.
Also wrist wraps are a great Idea when benching every heavy. I have only had very positive experience, my ownly injuries i have every had were doing full range of motion bench presses (before trying this workout)and a slight wrist problem before using straps. If you do this write you will not hurt yourself. Always follow how your body feels first.
But I feel this is one of the best workouts ever and does not leave so exausted that I feel weak after. I feel good after these workout and I get stronger. Now I have increased my range of motion and lightened the weight to work a little different. But I did the basic workout for over 1 year with very good results.
I now life heaver weights than I have ever before. I also am incresing my range of motion now and doing partial reps, but I could have never done that before I used this workout. I do partial range bench and incline bench with 315-400lbs I never could have done this before I started training that way. And to all those who think you need full range, full range hurt my shoulders for years and never let me grow I started growing when I did partials and then static. Not everbody responds the same way but for me this worked as a good base and now I am trying new things.
Once I pressed 5 plates for static, I deciced to back of the weight and increase the range and that is what I am doing now with good success.
Best used as a suppliment to your regular training.......2006-12-13
Readers BEWARE: The methods taught in this book should only be used to suppliment your training - and not to replace it. For years when I train people I tell them to hold the last rep --to contract and really squeeze the hell out of that muscle on the last rep. I drill that concept so much that I often tell others - that the last rep is so important that I could write a whole book about it - So guess what this book is about!! Except that he tells you to use THAT one and only rep in all your work outs--ONE REP WORKOUTS ?? that is crazy! No wonder so many people got injured following this method on it's own! You can't just work out 10 seconds a day putting supper intensenity in one rep and hope to become like Arnold! IN TODAYS LAZY SOCIETY WE NEED TO TRAIN HARD to achieve results. SO with that being said - if you put this book's method at the end of each exercise then you will have awesome potential in you hands - truely powerfull information!
The book is an interesting read -- a real page turner, with a lot of good insight on whats happening with the bodybuilding today as opposed to 50 years ago. You will love his explanitions on how corrupted the muscle magazine industries are,( How you are being brain washed by suppliment compenies) and the whole harsh reality of how unhealthy todays pro bodybuilders are. Check this one out at your local library.
Conceptually Great but the Devil's Flaws are Lurking.......2006-10-05
My partner and I worked the routine religously for over one year. I have great documentation of every rep - how was the form, how many seconds was the hold and a message for the next workout to either increase poundage, time of hold or to hold steady for better form.
And yes, just as they claim, my strength on the static hold began to increase. As I say, it's well documented.
And the 1,000 pound mark finally arrived on the leg press, and 350 pounds on the trapezoid shoulder roll with the barbell...all the other routines had virtually doubled in the weight resistance area...
You'd think I was really building muscle wouldn't you? Well I wasn't.
And here's the flaw: The day I leg pressed the 1000 pounds I heard and felt a tear in my knee. Miniscus(sic)surgery in both knees occurred last week. I'm a mess, but mostly because I had to have rotator cuff surgery on July 6th.
You see what the authors fail to mention to anyone is that despite the muscles ability to statically hold heavier and heavier weights, there ain't nothin' going on to strengthen the tendons and cartilage and other "body parts secondary to the muscle." And they can give way as they did in my case.
In my opinion, we all have a limit to the endurance of those secondary parts that can be overwhelmed by the high weights lifted via static contraction.
I've sacrificed 3 of my 4 major joints to surgery caused by static contraction.
And lastly, when we shifted to regular lifting after dazzling the gym with our "big stacking the weights on show," we were weaklings. My static bench press had been 310# but my bench press was only 165#.
solid static strength builder, but won't increase size.......2006-06-27
I bought the book and tried the program religiously for 3 months. Unfortunately, I want to grow. This program will help you gain strength with static holds. Unfortunately, I'm seeking hypertrophy (size increase) and this method doesn't do it. I maintained the same bodyweight, but am clearly flabbier than before. Stronger with static holds, but not more muscular. Plus, my true full range of motion excercises have decreased. I had hoped this would be a good break between my hypertrophy-specific training cyles. Well, it wasn't. The author claims that strength leads to size. This simply isn't true. Sure, strenght can enable size and one will grow somewhat as they grow stronger, but the two are not significantly correlated. Just look at those powerlifters that lift many more lbs than bodybuilders. They are concerned with strength, not size. He tries to pass what appears to be common sense off as science.
Now, don't get me wrong, this method does work to some degree if you don't follow the silly 6 second rule. You can get the benefits of occlusion by doing a static contraction, but the waste products such as lactic acid need to accumulate for well over 6 seconds to make a difference.
Now, I know that many reviewers of this book say that this program is unconventional and that is why all of the Doubting Thomases dislike it. Well yes, it is unconventional, but that doesn't make it right. If you want static strength, buy this book. It is good for static strength. If you want size, wait for 5 minutes before buying this book and check out other non-conventional, but highly effective methods such as hypertrophy-specific training (HST). The website I like best is hypertrophy-specific.com or there are really good research sites out there. Save the $15 and buy some good protein powder.

Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes
ASIN: 0226666891 |
Book Description
The University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary is the most popular dictionary of its kind. Its familiar name is known to millions of general readers, students, educators, and travelers. Improved for greater ease of use, and brought completely up to date, the fifth edition of The University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary is now more than ever the perfect resource for both language learners and experienced language users.
With thousands of added entries, the Dictionary builds on the features that have made it the leader in its field for more than fifty years: authority, scope, clarity, and conciseness. And with this edition, the Dictionary brilliantly captures the current core vocabularies of two rapidly changing—and increasingly connected—languages and cultures.
Entirely bilingual, the fifth edition focuses on two contemporary international languages—American English and a basic, worldwide Spanish that draws from both Latin American and Iberian sources.
Designed for a wide range of users, including travelers, businesspeople, students, teachers, and professionals, the new Dictionary is the essential first resource for speakers of both languages—from beginners to those at all other stages. Up to date, just comprehensive enough, and extraordinarily clear and easy to use, the new edition of The University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary stands alone. No other dictionary offers so many users so much help—or so much value.

For your "Spanish class".......2007-03-30
Remember the rubbish kids used in high school Spanish, taking their "Spanish" from the lady from Yourtown USA, who had never spoken Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country, or even spoken Spanish with a native speaker of Spanish? Remember the jocks taking "Spanish" in college for the distribution requirement, with the vacant looks on their faces, who got passed for football, or because their parents were alumni? Remember the textbook style stuff these people used (meaning bought and never cracked)? If you're nostalgic for that era, here's your "Spanish Dictionary". The U of Chi Spanish dictionary was always a bit brief, and the present crew seems to have thought that it should be even briefer, so here you have a "Brief Spanish Dictionary". It used to identify a lot of regional usages, in fact that was a selling point. Well, people complain about how much regional variation there is in Spanish, how slangy it is. Even Spanish native speakers! So, let's trim it down! Leave it to the New U of Chi Spanish Dictionary to lead the crusade against local idiosyncracy! Don't let those people in Chile or wherever get away with using their own lingo. Snuff it out! Don't list it, don't bother with it. It ain't there, no problem.
If the word ain't in your "Spanish" textbook, it ain't in this "dictionary". Welcome to "Spanish 101", eternally on the 101 level. No sangria, no senyorita, nada. No seas tonto, compa. Compra otro diccionario y aprende el castellano.
Marvelous. .......2006-11-11
the University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary is the very best Spanish-English dictionary available. It includes cultural notes and one can always find the needed word.
Chroolie dhe gratest dikshunerry evver.......2005-11-16
This dictionary has almost anything that you could ever ask for. As a Bilingual esperanto major at a prestigious Grade School this dictionary has helped me so much. My vocabulary has been enhanced further than i could imagine. It has not only the word, a simple abreviation to describe the part of speech and the different contex that the word can be used in. It has many more qualities that i look for in a dictionary and has come in handy many, many times. For any student or avid user of a esperanto-esperanto dictionary, this is the one!!
faded glory.......2005-07-22
The Chicago dictionary and I have been together ever since its third edition, which was the best of its day. The fourth edition set a standard that I have not seen equalled. The fifth edition is a great disappointment, a wastrel son that has squandered the intellectual capital bequeathed him by his forebears.
Gone are all the fine distinctions that make a language not simply intelligible but meaningful. Gone are the phonology and history of the language that gave structure to our understanding. Gone are the regional precisions that, in this day of continent-wide cable TV emanating from Buenos Aires, Caracas, Mexico City, Miami, and Los Angeles, become ever more important.
On the bright side, the fifth edition's typography, while cramped, is easier to read.
But I can recommend the Chicago no longer. The fifth is decidedly for the short-attention-span crowd. If you don't want a dictionary written for elementary students, either get the fourth edition or look to a different publisher.
Not so good.......2005-07-08
Let's try it out, on today's news stories:
El Pais: "Al Qaeda REIVINDICA los ataques [de 7 de julio a Londres]
REIVINDICAR, according to U of C Spanish Dictionary, means
"vindicate". Maybe we should try Oxford's gloss: "demand", "restore", "CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR (atentado)".
El Pais: "La trascendencia de este proceso es evidente, ya que es el primero que se ha celebrado en España contra presuntos terroristas islamistas ..."
TRASCENDENCIA, according to U of C S D means "transcendence". You think so? Try "significance" or "importance", which is what the Oxford Spanish Dictionary says it means.
And you can multiply examples of this kind of business. A high school Spanish student would get marked down, flunked maybe, for guessing at words like this. I used the Oxford Spanish Dictionary for comparison, but you can do better than the University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary without going so far.
Check out the other reviewers. This book is the only one they've reviewed. Shills, I'd say. Probably the grad students who did the leg work.

It's a story about a hunchback Archaeologist, his wealthy backer friend, and his pretty assistant and a lost Carthaginian city. It's also an interesting parallel story about the fall of this city. On certain levels it's interesting story with a lot of exciting searching for an Archaeological treasure that I'm sure many Archaeologists would kill for.
But it's also quite a sexist and racist story, but then it was written in the 1970's, when this attitude was common, still not right or justified, but prevalent. The attitude that the only way civilization arrived in Africa was because of the benevolent White folk is incredibly annoying and flawed.
If you pretend that it's a historical story you can almost forgive the attitudes, however it's an almost, which loses this fairly good story many stars.
Least favorite Smith novel so far .......2005-11-13
An interesting premise to begin with. But halfway through the book I started wondering "where is he going with this?". The material is a bit dated for today's reader. The characters are typical for Wilbur Smith: men are manly and women are damsels in distress.
I just felt that if Smith was really trying to draw some kind of parallel between the two worlds, it stayed parallel and never came together. It seemed sometimes that it was a gratuitous adventure in blood, killing and testosterone. It simply did not have any of the political intrigue that I remember from River God (still one of my all time faves) and Warlock.
The Sunbird.......2005-09-20
Written in a somewhat different formatt from previous Smith novels, but as always well done.
Innovative twin tales of adventure and black betrayal........2005-05-22
Let's first describe the book without passion or judgment. There are two tales, cutely parallel. The first tale is set in the 1960's or 70's. It concerns a South African multilingual super-talented white hunchbacked Anthropologist. This hero, together with his rich (white) friend and patron, explores an archaeological site. The third important character is a black guy, who is talented but alas feels no loyalty to the great country of South Africa. So it's a tale of bonding between two superb white guys and the treachery of a black guy.
The second tale is set 2000 years in the past, at which time apparently there was a white empire in southern Africa, whose remnants were being explored as the archaeological site of the first tale. The lead character is the Sunbird who is, ahem, white hunchbacked uber-talented, and the best friend of the king/emperor who is also a great adventurer and hero. And (you guessed it) the third important character is a strong black guy, a bit short of loyalty, who organizes an uprising that destroys the great white empire that surely must have existed in southern Africa.
Now I must warn that this review might contain trace amounts of sarcasm, which has been known to be occasionally harmful to straight-thinking minds.
This is one great book. I read it when I was a teenager, more that 15 years ago now, but the memory of the wonderful adventures and fundamental truths still burns fresh in my mind. Remember, these were the great days of Apartheid, now sadly lost, but perhaps not for ever.
Now, young as I was, I already knew that white people were gods, so the underlying bits of supremacy philosophy did not bother me too much. And, perhaps as Wilbur Smith intended, I was justly disgusted by some black people's refusal to be happy under Apartheid and slavery. And the main white characters are described so well... oh just as white people should be, the men strong and adventurous and always onto new conquests, the women beautiful and marvelous.
The only complaint I had with the book was the invention (or is it the truth?) of a white empire in ancient southern Africa. I mean, why bother with this convoluted story of Whites having been in South Africa before? We already know that whites deserve African land (actually, all land) as a divine right, so no justification is needed. But it doesn't hurt of course to be comforted by the safe knowledge that white people were in South Africa already 2000 years ago, and also anywhere else their past presence might be required for the ideological purpose of the day.
I hear this book is popular in the American South, you know, that wonderful place you really ought to fearlessly visit especially if you have dark skin, or even better, if you have white skin and a dark-skinned boyfriend. Oh, and I also hear Wilbur Smith didn't stop writing tales after the fall (temporary?) of Apartheid. I wonder what he's writing about now? If I were still a teenager, I'd read and find out, but alas, time passes and I am one no longer.
Sunbird basically substandard........2004-07-31
I love Wilbur Smith's novels, but this one must have been a high-school project that he resurrected for some immediate cashflow. The literary device for the transition from modern to ancient settings was clumsy, and much in both halves was just not plausible. The story had potential, but it was not realized.

A GLANCE OF EVERYTHING.......2002-07-02
I was really dispointed at this book, it tries to cover everything, but at the end it covers nothing. Too many models to cover in just one book, too many subjects to cover in a single book, it is just a glance of everything. It barely lets you know a part exists, but doesn't tell you where it is or how to replace it.
I wanted to know where the crankshaft sensor is in my cavalier, I didn't find any pictures, they explain how to replace it in just 5 or 6 lines, any warnings, oh! sure I had trouble with this sensor.
The book doesn't explain the operation theory, and if you want to know something about Electronic Control Modules on these models, this is the wrong book.

Book Description
The dazzling insect- and nectar-eating sunbirds in Asia and Africa are among the most glamorous of all bird families. This comprehensive book is the first guide to all sunbirds and to three other closely related families: the spiderhunters and flowerpeckers of Asia and the sugarbirds of southern Africa.
This guide provides a full account of each species, including a summary of identification criteria, differences between similar species, descriptions of calls and songs, habitat, status, movements, food, habits, and breeding biology. There are also detailed distribution maps and forty-eight beautiful color plates. The illustrations accurately portray both sexes of each species and all major plumage variations, and in many cases depict the 176 species on their typical food plants. Readers will be able to use this volume to identify any of these beautiful, often iridescent plumed birds and to gain insight into their ecology, behavior, and habits.

Sunbirds, spiderhunters, flowerpeckers, and sugarbirds........2001-12-29
I bought and read this book with enthusiasm because of my 35 years living and travelling in Africa, where sunbirds predominate. The illustrations are excellent and the text is as well. This is probably the most colorful of all the family books being issued by Yale, Princeton, and Oxford. Following Sibley and Monroe's DNA analysis, they have finally but the two African sugarbirds in the Sunbird family, with only generic status. They have previously been put as far away as Honeyeaters and Starlings. It would be lovely if the range maps could be put on the pages facing the illustrations, to help differentiate birds of similar appearance, but I guess this was not possible. The maps themselves are very good. Altogether, one of the best family books and a must for collectors.

Book Description
Telemakos is the grandson of two noble men: Kidane, member of the parliament in the African kingdom of Aksum, and Artos, the fallen High King of Britain. Telemakos is also an exceptional listener and tracker, resolute and inventive in his ability to discover and retain information. Now his aunt Goewin, the British ambassador to Aksum, needs his skill. Plague has come to Britain, and threatens Aksum. Disguised, Telemakos must travel to the city of Afar where saltthe currency of sixth century Africais mined, and discover the traitor who has ignored the emperor's command, spreading plague with the salt from port to port. This challenge will take all of Telemakos's skill, strength, and couragebecause otherwise it will cost him his life.
The Sunbird is the third in Elizabeth E. Wein's ongoing Arthurian/ Aksumite cycle. Its striking, spare language, riveting plot, and all-too-human characters are unforgettable.
The exotic culture and well-developed code of honor of the Aksumite court give this post-Arthurian/ancient Ethiopian fusion its striking flavor. . . . With her thorough command of historic characters, a grand scope, and a swift-paced, heroic plot, Wein has laid out an appealing and sumptuous literary banquet. (The Horn Book)
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking.......2006-07-27
An amazing and harrowing tale of a young man who takes it upon himself to save the kingdom from certain death. I found the story fast-paced and never lacking in detail. Even though it is the third in a series (and I certainly want to read the first two!), it can be read alone. A richly woven story full of sights, smells and characters that won't soon be forgotten, this is one historical novel that should delight both girls and boys alike. Telemakos is a hero that we can all feel for.
An amazing story--you'll never eat salt in the same way again!.......2006-03-23
In yet another fine book dealing with the family of Artos of Britain, Elizabeth E. Wein returns to the world of Aksum. This book focuses on the adventures of Telemakos, son of Medraut and nephew of Goewin. He is sent by his aunt into the desert to discover who is behind a deadly streak of smuggling that could endanger the entire country. Telemakos suffers from abuse and loneliness on his mission, and we the readers watch in breathless anticipation, wanting him to succeed yet not quite knowing how he will.
Throughout the story, Telemakos is haunted by his silent father. The young boy is jealous of an uncle he has never known, Lleu the prince of Britan, the reason--as far as we know--for Medraut's utter silence. Slowly the relationship between father and son begins to develop, and it is a pleasure to watch.
Goewin has long been my favorite character in this series, and she holds her own well in this book. Telemakos has a good relationship with his aunt, and she is in the complex position of being his greates helper while placing him in the greatest danger. But she is still magnificent, the bold Goewin we recognize from A Coalition of Lions, yet a little more grown-up too.
This is a moving, intriguing story that gives one a new respect for the determination and resiliency of children, and testifies to the power both of individual strength and family relationships. Best of all, it leaves plenty of room for more--and I, for one, will be first in line for the next installment!

A must for GM H-Special bodied car owners........1998-10-12
There are many aftermarket service manuals covering GM's H body cars, but this is the only aftermarket service manual (that I'm aware of) that also covers GM's H-Special body hatchbacks and notchbacks.
If you don't have a factory service manual for your 1975-80 Monza, Sunbird, Starfire, or Skyhawk, then you should have this manual.
