Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars A Bridge Among Jewish Communities.......2001-09-04

Others have praised the delightful stories in this rich volume, so I won't spend my time repeating--although I may well say that every good word spoken about this anthology is true. What I shall emphasize is how extraordinarily this book bridges various Jewish communities and sensibilities.

Contemporary Jewish culture has become extremely fragmented during the last fifty or one hundred years. Then here comes a book including Jewish stories from nearly two dozen countries, showing that we all have so much in common despite our differences. Jews in Morocco can relate on these pages to Jews of Russia and Iran and Argentina and Mexico and Siberia and Finland and France and Israel of course, and so on. Ashkenazi and Sephardi and Mizrahi all together sharing the same quests. This book PROVES that we are a united people despite our petty differences. THIS book should be the constitution of the World Jewish Congress. THIS book brings Jewish diversity together in one volume. THIS book should be given to every bar and bat mitzvah around the world. Then we would be one people as in ancient times.

5 out of 5 stars a wink of the numinous.......2001-07-26

This is a delightful anthology with an intriguing title. As it appears, "fabulist" has to do with imagination, in this case Jewish, which raises each story to the level of a mystical adventure. For example, Tehila Lieberman's "Anya's Angel" with wistfulness and delicacy evokes a touching love story with many links to the infinite; Daniel Jaffe's own "Sarrushka and her Daughter" is a highly intriguing folk legend exploring extra-sensory powers in individuals. And here are, to my mind, the best six: Mark Apelman's "A Visitor's Guide to Berlin" is an amazingly powerful evocation of Holocaust memories and an utterly convincing artistic emplotment of those memories, in their intensity and brutal reality, as inhabiting modern-day Berlin and claiming a reality that is more than real. Yakov Shechter's "Midday," a story about the search for meaning and about shaping one's own destiny, has a strong atmosphere of the numinous - the clouds keep darkening, the mystical intent comes more and more into focus - towards the resolution, still mysterious yet imaginatively satisfying. Joan Leegant's "The Tenth" is a powerfully imagined story of a rabbi whose faith, learning, tolerance, whose intellectual and spiritual endurance are callenged and tested by the appearance of an unusual candidate to complete a minyan. (A similar case of a rabbi who is tested by a rebellious pupil is treated flatly and unimaginatively by Steven Sher in "Tsuris," which only shows that what matters and what makes a story fabulous (excuse the pun!) is not the fabula but the quality of imagination and a way with language.) Ruth Knafo Setton's "The Cat Garden" is electrifying, memorable, descriptively evocative. The anthology ends with two of the strongest stories: Dina Rubina's "Apples from Shlitzbutter's Garden," which explores the semi-mystical ways in which our forefathers' inheritance follows its paths into the consciousness of the younger generation, does so with singular warmth and a sense of humor that makes everything vivid. Here the translator (who is Jaffe himself) does an exceptional job conveying an impression of a friendly, chatty narrator communicating real warmth and charm - and yet the story touches on the inevitably painful theme of the memories of our collective past. The last story in the collection is Steve Stern's "the Tale of a Kite," a marvelous fable humorously teaching us a lesson about human nature as well as making an eloquent case for the human need to believe utterly, unsceptically and completely. As in all anthologies, unevenness is the other side of variety.Given so many excellent stories it is a mild disappointment to have alonside some weak ones, such as Galina Vromen's "Sara's Story," Moacyr Scliar's "The Prophets of Benjamin Bok," Steven Sher's "Tsuris" and Cyrille Fleishman's "One day, Victor Hugo." These stories' weakness is, predominantly, in their defective imagination, which treats the supernatural realm as a source of tricks rather than of significance. In the middle stand stories such as John Shepley's "A Golem in Prague" - good, gripping writing that keeps the reader in suspense for something meaningful, yet the design of the story is incomplete, as if it is waiting to fill a mould not yet fully in view. To conclude - "fabulist" or "magical" or whatever we choose to term it, the common denominator in these stories is a wink of the numinous, a pull towards that extra significance which makes life gain a richer hue. This is, if we generalize, what connects the best fabulist stories with all truly good literature. Clearly, I feel enriched by having read this anthology.

5 out of 5 stars An Unusual Delight.......2001-06-14

Over the years, I have read quite a number of Jewish-themed and other anthologies. I certainly expected this one to be of interest, but was taken aback at its freshness, its unique approach, its range and cultural sensitivity. Not only is the emphasis on spirituality and mysticism refreshing, but this book showcases numerous writers on the rise with whom I had not been familiar. I will now seek out their books. And so many translations of works that are simply not available in English elsewhere! This anthology introduced me to writers and literary cultures I'd known only marginally. Kudos to the editor. My favorite stories were those by E. Seltz of Israel (originally from Siberia of all places!), M. Scliar of Brazil, A. Muniz-Huberman of Mexico, and a few from U.S. writers--D. Jaffe (the editor), R. Knafo Setton, and M. Apelman. Contemporary issues of questioning the presence of spirituality in our lives, ancient historical themes, Holocaust themes, and as Mr. Jaffe says in his Introduction, several stories on the theme of Jew as other. (One would expect the Introduction to be a useful overview for college students, by the way.) Half men authors, half women authors, secular and religious perspectives, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi sensibilities. Quite a representative mix of global Jewish culture. And fine literature at the same time. A must read.

first and foremost, though, preaching the Gospel of the Good News

5 out of 5 stars This book inspires faith.......2001-09-05

I bought this book due to my interest in women in ministry, and vastly enjoyed this historic account. While near the end of reading this book, I was diagnosed with cancer. The book had built my faith so much that I decided to ask Jesus to heal me, much as Mrs. Woodworth-Etter prayed for the sick. I was healed, miraculously, no chemo, radiation or surgery, except for an exploratory procedure with biopsies, to be sure the cancer was indeed gone. It is four years later now, I am still healed. I believe it was God who drew my attention to this book so that I might have faith ready for the exact time it was needed.

5 out of 5 stars The fire fell and will fall again!.......2000-07-11

I have read Maria Woodworth-Etters book A Diary of Signs and Wonders several times. As an evangelical christian reading this book was like reliving the Book of Acts over and over again. Jesus promised His church that He would send the Holy Spirit in power and throughout the whole book on Maria Woodworth-Etters ministry we see the evidence of the awesome power of our almighty God. The book is full of documented supernatural healings and sermons given by Maria Woodworth-Etter. She had no formal theological training from man but she had the best Teacher their is, the Holy Spirit himself. She stayed in the Word of God and used it as the ONLY measuring tool to walk with. God also revealled in her mininstry the importance of the body of Christ working together. Although Maria was the team leader she had many brother(s) and sister(s) in the Lord that worked along side of her.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible book filled with God's mighty & true miracles........1998-10-23

This incredible book is filled with testimony after testimony of the effectiveness of the Holy Ghost ministry preached by Sister M. B. Woodworth-Etter as she traveled the country. 100 years ago she endured hardship to bring hope and healing to a thirsty America. As she entered city and town after city and town they would be a mighty shaking by the power of God. Never have I read such first-hand evidence of so many humbling, mind-boggling, tremendous miracles as in this large volume. Many accounts are from local hosting pastors and elders; many from the recipients of the miracles; many from the doctors who treated them. One truly needs to set this book down from time to time just to fully grasp the spectrum of God's work through this little woman. I personally know a precious woman, now in her 90's, who at age 15 was healed of a goiter in Mrs. Etter's meeting. And when you get your hands on this volume, you may do as I have done -- gven at least a dozen copies away to friends and family.

3 out of 5 stars An unbelievable story of a woman evangelist (1880-1924)........1996-07-05

Maria B. Woodworth-Etter defied the imagination for women of the latter part of the 19th century and the first 24 years of this century. This book is her own account of preaching long before she could vote, packing out an 8,000-seat tent, resisting opposition from Mass. to Californian. She received opposition not only from the admitted ungodly but also from other Christian groups. When they told her women were to keep silent in the church and learn from their husbands at home, she gave a classic example: "If some women learned from their husbands, they would die in ignorance." The book is well over 500 pages and covers her meetings and quotes newspapers of the day. A companion book is my biography, "The Woman Evangelist." Although I document many of her claims in "Signs and Wonders," I am objective and do not overlook her weaknesses in theology and practices. However, I think you'll consider it a fair treatment. 5 out of 5 stars Champion.......2005-12-09

Etter was a champion of the Faith. She lived through great emotional hardship and still served God unwaveringly. Through her God healed and spoke to a generation. She was the grandmother of the Pentecostal movement.

5 out of 5 stars Not even one in a generation like Maria Woodworth Etter.......2001-02-05

Bearing the emotional wounds of a tragic childhood, Maria Woodworth-Etter embarks upon the journey of motherhood only to lose her children, one heartbreak after the other. The sufferings of her life were so great that sorrow nearly broke her. I have read her book but I still don't undertand how she managed to endure. Who would have thought that God would chose such a person to imprint His Name and dispaly His power upon a generation?

If God wanted to prove that He choses the weak and foolish things of this world in order to confound the strong and the wise, He found His vessel of choice in this little woman, Maria Woodworth-Etter.

A shy and timid woman, barely able to utter a word in public, Maria Woodworth Etter became one of the most legendary vessels of God since the early church age. When she took the platform and opened her mouth He filled it with His Words, and with power. Her natural voice was small but when the anointing of God came upon her she could be heard clearly from a great distance. Travelers passing through the villages where her meetings were taking place would find themselves falling under the "slaying anointing" or "falling down anointing" as custom would call it, as they came near her meetings. Record has it that railroad men finding passengers falling down mysteriously would suddenly realize that Mother Etter was preaching nearby, and they would understand what was happening to these passengers in their railroad cars. In both the Old and New Testaments it is recorded that there were times when people could not stand in the Presence of the Power of God. And this was just one manifestation of her ministry.

Some of the greatest miracles of God ever recorded were wrought in the ministry of this unlikely little woman. An awesome record of the outpouring of the Holy Ghost in her generation, this book is an inspiration. If He did it once He can do it again. And if He could use her, perhaps He could use...well.

For every student of the great moves of God this book is a must read, and a keeper for your library. You won't want to part with it. I predict that you will make a special home for it on your shelf alongside the works of John G. Lake, Smith Wigglesworth, Kathryn Kuhlman and the few others like them.

Not sure that you believe in miracles but would like to read about them and about the people used to perform them? This is a great place to begin. But remember, faith does not come from reading about miracles, it comes from knowing the miracle giver, and by reading His book. The books of Maria Woodworth-Etter will point you there.

5 out of 5 stars The power of the Holy Spirit is for today!.......1999-11-23

An anointed(still!)record of the meetings of Maria Woodworth-Etter(1844-1924)in her own words and sermons as well as contemporary reviews, testimonies of healings, and eyewitness accounts of the real power and presence of the Holy spirit . Though the coming of the Lord for the church may not have come as soon as she seemed to be saying, I believe she spoke as the Lord directed in a prophetic voice. I would recommend this book to any one searching for God as well as to those who long to see His power today.

5 out of 5 stars No better Series for down home humor - HARMONY Series.......2007-07-05

If you have not read The Harmony Series yet, you better pour that cup of coffee or tea and dig in! You will not be able to put it down until your neck is sore and your back hurts, and you are completely blurry eyed. It is almost as good as getting to the bottom of a cornetto ice cream cone!

It took me about 2 chapters before I GOT IT, before I got the down home humor and wit of Phil Gulley. I wait on baited breath for the next in the series to come out. Until then I can satisfy my Harmony cravings by reading Front Porch Tales and other wonderful thouht provoking stories.

Phillip Gulley is my all time favorite author. We own a bed and breakfast in Rocky Mount Virginia (The Claiborne House B&B). I am almost positive every character in this series lives right here in this town. We have one of his porch books ON our front porch and guests love reading his anecdotal tales.

You don't know what you are missing!

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this series!.......2007-02-16

If Sam was my pastor, I'd be a regular church goer. All of the Harmony books are warm, touching and hilariously funny without being the slightest bit sugar-coated. Sam and his flock are real people with all their foibles. I've known people like every one of Mr. Gulley's characters Sometimes I want to shake them; sometimes I want to hug them. Mostly they make me laugh till my sides hurt; sometimes they make me cry.

I bought this book for my local library because it was the only one in the series they didn't already own, and I KNEW that other people reading the books would be disappointed if this one wasn't available. I hope I brightened someone else's day by giving the book as much as reading the book brightened my day.

It doesn't get better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful return to Harmony.......2006-12-12

Pastor Sam Gardner is back with his quirky Quaker flock. As usual Dale Hinshaw is full of schemes to spread the Gospel. This time he has given up on Scripture eggs and is now sending Salvation Balloons which are strategically aimed at liberals and unsaved people. Sam encounters problems in his own household when he and his wife can't agree on a vacation spot and the parishioners argue over everything from putting in a new furnace to who to include in the ladies' celebrity quilt. With his usual gentle humor, Philip Gulley brings to life the colorful and quirky characters of Harmony, Indiana, much to the readers' delight!

    5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for more..........2004-05-24

Every Phillip Gulley book is like traveling back home. The characters make me laugh, cry and give me hope that I, too, will make it through the next bump in the road. These books remind me of the Dorsetville series by Katherine Valentine. Keep them coming!

5 out of 5 stars Best of Harmony!.......2003-12-27

This had to be my favorite "Harmony" book by Phillip Gulley! I laughed out loud in several places. This is a book of FICTION and it pokes fun at various aspects of a typical congregation, from the well-meaning but misguided people who judge others more harshly than themselves to those who truly do have Jesus in their hearts, but are overpowered by the strong voices of other church members. Poor Deena Morrison is still single, and everyone is trying to marry her off! Dale Hinshaw now has his "scripture balloons" sailing off to convert the heathens in Chicago, and Sam's wife wants the vacation she's never had. Oh, and then there's the replacement of the "memorial oven" in the kitchen where the annual Chicken Noodle Dinner is made! I hope Phillip Gulley continues to write about Harmony and it's inhabitants!

This is an amazing account of the way God blesses his children who dare to spend time seeking Him with their whole heart. The miracles of gold dustings and healings are prevalent and very real. The experiences encountered make one hungry for more of God's manifest presence. God longs to bless His people and this book is a testimony to that fact. God is making his presence known in ways that cannot be explained away by skeptics.

    Book Description

Crop circles, those beautiful and complex patterns that are visible from the air in fields around the world, have long fascinated the public, media, and scientific community. Vital Signs is a comprehensive guide for newcomers to these puzzling patterns and an essential history for those who are already intrigued. Illustrated with hundreds of full-color and black-and-white photos, this chronological and photographic history is an accessible discussion of the various crop circle theories, physical and statistical evidence, and the surprising effects these formations have had on observers and researchers.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb Photographs, Light on the Text.......2006-03-16

This is one of two first-rate books on crop circles and their implications for mankind that I recommend. This one is the "coffee table" book, with an absolutely sensational collection of clear color photographs that provide what I believe may be the single best collection of distinct crop circles at distinct times and places on the planet.

This book is however light on the text and the thinking. It should be read in conjunction with "Open Minds: A Journal of Extraordinary Encounters, Crop Circles, and Resonance," by Simeon Hein, Ph.D.

I am persuaded of three things by these books taken together and my various other readings:

    1) The Earth is alive and everything on it is a web of life that has a global consciousness--the butterfly effect and the mind over matter effects are real.

    2) There exist other forms of intelligence at least equal if not vastly superior to ours elsewhere, and I speculate from some of this reading that we are a "diversity enhancer" for a larger constellation of planets, and that we may also be failing a longer-term test to determine if we are ready for inter-planetary interaction.

    3) There are, between books like this and the many very intelligent people that tend NOT to go into politics, clear possibilities for our rising to the challenge. We simply have not focused as a Collective Intelligence or World Brain, and we need to do so before we destroy our planet and our species.

    Both books are almost mesmerizing.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Thought-Provoking.......2005-07-12

This is a graphically rich and comprehensive book full of beautiful photos and big ideas. Thomas stimulates our imagination and wonder about this mysterious phenomenon. However, like some other books in this genre, he fails to seriously address the issue of manmade crop formations. Nonewithstanding what some other reviewers on this page have said, manmade formations are a large, signficant, and important part of the crop circle scene. As many of these land art designs produce strange effects, like camera and battery failure, previously attributed only to "genuine" formations, books like Vital Signs need to address this aspect of the mystery, rather than simply dismissing manmade formations as "hoaxes." That being said, readers are bound to find this book a worthwhile and lasting investment.

    5 out of 5 stars A Crop Circle Encyclopedia.......2003-10-14

Vital Signs is the most comprehensive guide to the beautiful and enigmatic crop circles ever written. Andy writes in a very clear and easy to read style, putting together an enormous amount of information, combined with loads of wonderful photos, many of them in color.
This book is a "must read" for any crop circle enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars A definitive history of the crop circles.......2003-05-02

When Andy Thomas' Vital Signs first came out in its UK edition in 1998, it was quickly seen as one of the best historical surveys of the post-1978 crop circle phenomenon. As a longtime editor of the journal of the Southern Circular Research group (now known as Swirled News at www.swirlednews.com), as well as a top-notch researcher himself, Thomas had been looking long and hard at the crop formations, from every angle, both inside and outside the glyphs. With great persistence, a feisty spirit, and often hilarious drama at such venues as the annual Glastonbury Symposium and the International UFO Congress, Thomas remains one of the fiercest defenders of the true crop circles, and a defender as well of the hard research that's been done on the phenomenon over the years. I'm happy to see that Vital Signs has come out in an updated version in the US, incorporating the glyphs from the intervening years, including the 2001 season. Readers unfamiliar with the first edition will want to buy this version, one of the best overviews of the phenomenon.

Vital Signs begins with a painstaking presentation of the ground-level data, including the unusual layering and swirls of the downed crop, while providing important details of the scientific work that's been done analyzing the effects on the stalks and soil, establishing the reality of the phenomenon beyond all the hoaxing. It then goes elaborately into what's seen from up above: the pictorial shapes and beautiful geometries, uncovering the mathematics encoded in the shapes. Along the way, we also learn of the strange balls of light (BOLs) seen hovering over the fields and of the effects of crop circle energies on electronic equipment and the biological systems of humans and animals. We're treated too to eyewitness accounts of crop circles forming, including the important recent case in Amsterdam when Nancy Talbott-a key scientific researcher and member of the BLT Research Team-along with Robbert van der Broeke, saw three powerful tubes of light descend into a bean field outside the van der Broeke home, only to discover a few minutes later that a structured crop circle had appeared in the field. It's stories like these that lead one to believe that crop circles are a key part of the worldwide UFO phenomenon.

One of the great strengths of Vital Signs is the year-by-year chronology it provides, as well as the beautiful photographic gallery that accompanies the text, including a central color section. It's a chronicle that not only describes the fascinating evolution of the crop formations over the years, but also the rabid atmosphere of controversy that has grown up around them: are they manmade, anomalous, or a mixture of both? How can you tell the real from the hoaxed and what's the percentage of each? Are the simple ones the true phenomenon, or are some of the more complex formations real as well? As Thomas juggles the assertions and denials on both sides of the fence-as well as the natural, supernatural, and ufological theories as to how they're made-what finally emerges is that, if any of them are not manmade (and much evidence supports the idea that many, perhaps most of them are not), then we have a genuine mystery that's growing in scope around the world. However, it's only ongoing, careful research that has the power to cut through the fog of disinformation. Vital Signs is a great introduction for those confronting the crop circles for the very first time, as well as a primary resource for long-time researchers still dazzled by the mysterious signs in the fields.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic insight into the European novel.......1999-06-24

All of Franco Moretti's in-class charm and wit is demonstrated in this series of essays on various forms of the European novel. He does a fantastic job of legitimizing not only popular texts, such as Dracula and the Sherlock Holmes series, but also the field of literary criticism itself. He makes a compelling argument for not only the profound effect that society has had in forming literary trends, but also literature's role in shaping society. His essay on Tragedy in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama contains some particularly fascinating insights into this phenomenon. While written in a colloquial tone, some essays can come across overly mandarin at times. Get through the first and most difficult essay, 'The Soul and the Harpy', and the rest will be smooth sailing. He makes his field seem almost, dare I say, 'cool'.
