to basic ok for sailboats not much for other rigging

3 out of 5 stars Good book but missing key information.......2006-02-21

This book has LOTS of really good information. But it is missing some significant stuff, Brion. PLEASE PLEASE do another addition and include SOME information about the following:

      1. Chainplates. Nothing. How is a proper chainplate shaped, mounted, doubled, etc? Where do they go? What should you consider when changing from single boomking backstay to double backstays?

      2. Bowsprits. Hardly a word. How is a proper bowsprit mounted? What kind of materials are appropriate for a bobstay? etc.

      3. Stemheads. Hardly a word. Come on, what good is a rig if it isn't mounted to something????

      4. Mast steps. The rig seems to float in air with this book, and no proper consideration is given to how it MOUNTS TO THE BOAT.

Other than that, it is a great book. Lots of good info, formulas, etc. Lots of great knots, lots of funny quips, good explanation of how single and double spreader rigs are stayed and shrouded.

But most of us also have boats to go along with our rigs, and it would be nice to have a WHOLE CHAPTER on how the rig connects to the boat, because many of us need to maintain, repair, and improve that part of the rig as well.

Good book, but it is incomplete as currently published.

5 out of 5 stars The Thoughts of a REAL RIGGER.......2004-06-19

As a rigger myself, i thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it most informative and useful for my trade. However, there was little or no mention of brews OR 3 leets - surely this is an integral part of being a RIGGER? Also, there is only one rigger.

      Me!

      Oh, and Ryan Jendoubi.

5 out of 5 stars The only thing like it for traditional craft.......2003-12-04

Brion Toss has become "da man" in modern rigging in many ways, and a lot of that is attributable to this great book. It's a big, thick thing, loaded with information, not all of it easily absorbed on the first read. It's meant to give you a firm grounding in what rigging is, what it does, and how to inspect and maintain your own rig, how to adjust it, how to replace worn sections. Will it tell you everything you need to know to design a rig from the ground up on a serious racing yacht? Heck, no. It isn't meant to. What this book does is give you the tools you need to approach your own rig without fear and trembling - to realize that, after all, it's just a bunch of parts, and that you can comprehend and work with those parts, understand their roles, and get the most from your boat. Will you be forever independant of professional riggers? Probably not. But it goes a long way toward making that a realizable goal, if you apply yourself. And it should be known that this book is especially strong on traditional rigs, the more traditional the better. You'll learn how to worm, parcel, and serve, how to lace deadeyes, and why galvanized is great and stainless isn't stainless. And if that last sentence frightens you, you're probably not in the intended demographic. Rod rigging and carbon fiber masts are mentioned, at best, in passing, and largely for comic relief. Keep that in mind. Makes an absolutely perfect companion to Marino's "Sailmaker's Apprentice."

2 out of 5 stars A Simple Compilation of Rigging technique.......2002-08-24

THE COMPLETE RIGGER'S APPRENTICE by Mr. Brion Toss is a no-brainer simple compilation of standard rigging technique. Most of which can be found by reading past editions of old rigging manuals and from the writings of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, or from company product manuals. Nothing new or original has been done in this work; and the 'Compilation' of any subject matter has always been considered a cheap way of getting published.

Since its first appearance in 1854 and through many revisions this dictionary has remained constant in its appeal to scholars.

This new and revised Latin Dictionary is among the best of its kind, being reliable, compact and adequate for the needs of all save the specialist. He has produced what is in effect a new book, typographically easy to consult and combining elegance with utility. -The Times Literary Supplement

I studied Latin intensely in high school years ago and often reallize how it influences my understanding of other languages. Recently I had the task of translating some Latin liturgical pieces but found my recolledtion of vocabulary somewhat clouded. I couldn't find my old texts and ordered this treatise and found what I needed. The book would more helpful if it had a summary of Latin grammar such as rules for declension, etc. Thanks. 4 out of 5 stars Best of its kind.......2007-04-03

This is an outstanding dictionary. For those having progressed beyond the most basic level of Latin, and in need of something better than a pocket dictionary, this is the clear choice. It is inexpensive, the binding is excellent (it can be laid open, flat on a table), it gives clear, logical definitions (nicely distinguishing between "literal" and "transferred" meanings) and includes many references to Roman authors. Also, the English-Latin section is indispensible for those wishing to do composition. Ultimately, of course, one would like to have the Oxford Latin Dictionary-- but this is very expensive, very bulky, and will give more information on a word than what an intermediate Latin student would even want.

I have only one quibble (which is the only reason I do not give five stars). The editors have shied away from marking hidden vowels long or short. They have marked vowels long or short only as they have been strictly shown to be by scansion of Latin poetry or in obvious compounds. In this they have taken a very conservative approach. The best that one can say is that at least they have been consistent. One can accept that there is scholarly disagreement in certain cases, and that editors might not wish to commit themselves. On the other hand, if I am a relative beginner, and I want to know whether a particular vowel in a certain word should be long or short, where else should I look except in my dictionary?

But this is a relatively minor quibble (and many other dictionaries have the same problem). Overall, this dictionary is certainly better than any of its rivals at this level, and is highly recommended.

        Latin is everywhere.

Maybe your Roman Catholic grandma has a mysterious phrase she repeats all the time. Perhaps you're an academic reader and you keep stumbling upon expessions like 'inter alia', 'et cetera', 'ibid', 'pace', and the like. It's possible you've stood and stared up at the semi-compelling statue in your town square, scratched your head, and told yourself the thing would be *completely* compelling if you had a clue what the Latin inscription on its base was rattling on about.

Latin is everywhere and you need a little defense. That's what CASSELL'S LATIN DICTIONARY - which has been around for generations of noggin-scratchers - is going to get you: a little defense.

It's the cost-effective and reliable answer for those who need to know a little Latin without investing in the tools that are designed for those who steward lots of Latin.

The MacMillan livery and construction both make the price attractive.

If you have just started studying latin and you want to increase your vocabulary a whole lot then go ahead and choose this wonderful dictionary that promises to be very useful for those purposes. Besides, it counts with expressions and idioms to help you translate more accurately whatever you are trying to decipher. I am a student and I can't leave without this wonderful device of learning.

        5 out of 5 stars Verbum!.......2005-10-26

The Cassell's Latin-English Dictionary has a long history. First published in 1854, it has continued in publication under various editors and revisions to the present text, the work of D.P. Simpson, Head of the Classics Department at Eton during the middle of the twentieth century. This book remains for all but the most advanced scholars in Latin the principle Latin dictionary. Clerics, students and general readers of the classics use this volume more than any other. There are other editions (concise editions, etc.), but this is primary volume for standard use.

The dictionary has two sections, a Latin-English side, and an English-Latin side. The Latin-English side contains a primary vocabulary of classical Latin, most words used and found in writings between 200 BCE and 100 AD/CE. There are also proper nouns (names, places). Spelling was flexible in the ancient world; the spelling here follows the conventional modern spellings, with cross-references for significant variances. Words indicate definitions, declension or conjugation as appropriate, and some pronunciation guides. Latin authors are also indicated (in abbreviation) for almost every word.

The English-Latin side is primarily useful for prose composition into Latin of the classical type. Because of the natural growth of language due to progress of technology and ideas, many English words will not be found, as there are no Latin equivalents. Latin equivalent words are taken largely from Cicero, Caesar and Livy, with some additions from legal and ecclesiastical Latin.

There are additional sections for standard Latin abbreviations, the Roman calendar, bibliographies for word lists, atlases, general antiquities, and Latin language guides. This is the best choice for a Latin dictionary for almost any purpose. Even high-end scholars will want the Cassell's for ready and easy reference.

5 out of 5 stars Still my favorite.......2005-02-25

After all these years, I still love this one. I look at it all the time. Aside from the Latin-English and English-Latin dictionaries, it has information about usage -- conjugations, declensions, what each tense is used for, examples of conjugating in every verb and declining in every noun form (including the more obscure, such as dependent and deponent verbs), etc.

It's in here. It's far more than a dictionary. If it isn't here, that means you need a straight-out usage or text book; this little dictionary goes far and above an average little dictionary. I've been using the same copy since high school and it's still next to my desk all the time. I don't even have a career related to Latin; I just love it. I love it for my own writing (in English), and simply my own edification.

        3 out of 5 stars Limited.......2004-06-23

I bought this dictionary along with the Bantam Latin-English, Engish-Latin dictionary. Of the two, I found that the Bantam dictionary was the better. There have been a few times when I've tried looking up a word in the Cassell's dictionary and not found it, only to find it in the Bantam dictionary. If you're going to purchase a Cassell's Latin dictionary then the hardcover edition is the better buy. Otherwise I would recommend getting the Bantam dictionary.

4 out of 5 stars Good little dictionary.......2004-02-03

This is a good little Latin dictionary. It contains a variety of words used over the years, mostly focusing on classical Latin but including some from the ecclesiastical period. You can't expect to have every Latin word in here, because it's a very small format. The small format is very convenient, and the binding is good - I have used mine a great deal and the binding has held up very well.

I especially like the way they deal with variant forms of words, especially participles. They often list the participial forms of verbs separately (but under the same root verb heading, prefixed by the word "Hence"). Latin participles, of course, are very easily determined from the verbs, so it's not absolutely necessary; but the way they did it is tremendously helpful in two ways:

        1. Sometimes the participle has a slightly different meaning or emphasis from the original verb. This allows them to separately distinguish the senses of the participle from the senses of the basic verb;

        2. It is a tremendous boon to memorizing vocabulary. Very often, an English word has been taken almost letter-for-letter from the participle, while the original verb has not come across into English. (Example: the verb "ago" doesn't come across in English, but the participial form "agens/agent" does.) Relating the verb to the English is a great help in memorizing vocabulary.

My only real problem with this dictionary has to do with the size and printing. At this size, it is very difficult to distinguish the marks they use for long vs. short vowels. It would have been better to never mark short vowels, so you know that if it doesn't have a long vowel mark it's short. Sometimes you're left puzzling over whether a given vowel is long or short, not a good feature to have in a dictionary.

Other than this, it's an excellent book, and an excellent value.

5 out of 5 stars Still useful after all these years........2002-03-18

As a graduate student in Latin, I have nothing but praise for Cassell's dictionary. The entries are concise and helpful, and it has sections for both English to Latin and Latin to English, which makes it ideal for introductory-level courses that require student composition.

As for the reviewer who complained that it does not contain "longa" or "lata," the individual is quite mistaken and displaying his ignorance; Latin adjectives are listed under the masculines, thus "longus-a-um" is present, as is "latus-a-um."

An inexpensive and effective tool that's valuable as a quick aid for nearly all levels of Latin.

                        A Review by Miranda

Fifteen-year old Sarah can't wait to start her new summer job as a mother's helper, so she can get away from what she calls her weird family. Finding out that the mother and father are divorced and argue all the time about their daughter, Emily, who has an eating disorder Sarah realizes her family isn't that bad. In the meantime she is trying to help Emily through her troubled times, relieve stress from her mother and tries to get the attention of a cute boy that works downstairs.

I liked how the topic of the book was so realistic and a teenager could relate to what was going on. It was easy to follow and it made you want to keep reading. I liked the characters of the book and how each one was totally different. It made the story a lot more interesting, because one character would like to do something one way and the other would want to do it another way. So you're stuck thinking, how are they going to resolve it? The one part about the book that I didn't like was how towards the end it had a great climax but the resolution was weak.

I would recommend this book to people who like reality and teen issues. I think it was a wonderful book that makes you want to keep reading and not want to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story that is based on reality........2003-05-06

I read, "I am an Artichoke" when I was in seventh grade(I'm in tenth grade now) and I absolutley loved it! It was one of my favorite books and I would always get it from the library. I was not at all disappointed when I first read it because the writing was so much more different than any other book. It's one of those cozy books that you can read over and over again! It takes place in New York City and has a sense of depth and reality which is refreshing. Read it and you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Frank Talk From Frank.......2000-08-26

Lucy Frank writes with this amazing, refreshing honesty. Her portrayal of the young anorexic Emily is so real, it is capable of provoking tears from the easily frightened or previous anorexics. The most stunning part of the novel, though, is the innocence the main character, Sarah, has in luring her beloved friend away from the eating disorder. It seems as if she does not realize the effect she has influencing Emily. She is just naturally inspiring... a novel with a frank, fresh quality to each glorious page.
