    4 out of 5 stars A Great Pre-Beginner Book.......2007-08-20

In other words, it's a great book to read if you're thinking about learning to fly helicopters and want to learn more of what it's all about. Don't confuse this with a real flight training manual -- it falls far short of that. But it is a fun read that will make someone interested in flying helicopters more eager to get started. It'll also give you the information you need to better understand what's going on during those first few training flights.

4 out of 5 stars For the beginner.......2007-05-08

Perfect for the beginner. Lets you know in plain English what flying is all about and what you have to know to do it. Goes beyound laws and theory and explains why things work instead of makeing you memorize. I only gave it 4 stars because it needs to be updated from the 80's.

5 out of 5 stars Great Beginner Book.......2006-08-05

This book immediately draws you in and teaches you the basics. The first few chapters are really easy to read and understand. It does get harder at the end but by then you're hooked. I read this one before moving on the FAA manual. If I had started with the FAA manual I would have been completely lost.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to fly helicopters.......2005-09-07

Learning to fly helicopters is an undertaking unlike no other. It is more of a calling, actually. And a huge commitment of time, money, and energy. Mr. Padfield understands this. He knows what it feels like to learn, get scared, become frustrated, and he helps the reader through it all with warm humor and inspiration. The text is clear and readable with many helpful illustrations. This is a great book to read as you study, to refer to as a beginning pilot, or to refresh your memory with. This book is unlike the majority of instructional volumes which are very dry and where the authors either talk down to the reader or lapse into technical jargon. Learning to fly helicopters is fun to read and very helpful
It also has lots of cool pictures.

    5 out of 5 stars Informative, well-written, and an all-around fun book.......2003-06-12

I read this book before I started my helicopter training just about two years ago. Since then, I have bought and read just about every book about rotary-wing aircraft that I can get my hands on. This book is fundamental in nature, but fairly complete none the less and an absolute joy to read. I recently read it again and loved it more than when I first picked it up. Of all the helicopter books I have read this one is still by far my favorite.

        Book Description

From the editors at the world-renowned Associated Press, a guide to the proper use of punctuation--from the apostrophe to the semicolon.

More people write for the Associated Press than for any other news service, and more writers take their style and word-usage cues from this world-famous institution than from any other journalism source. In the no-nonsense, authoritative tradition of the best-selling AP Stylebook, the top editors at the AP have now written the definitive guide to punctuation. From the when and how of the ampersand to the rules for dashes, slashes, and brackets; from the correct moment for the overused exclamation point to the rules of engagement for the semicolon, The AP Guide to Punctuation is an invaluable and easy-to-use guide to the most important aspect of clear and persuasive writing.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The gold standard.......2007-07-26

For journalists, the AP style guides are pretty much the gold standard (or silver, depending on your economic policy leanings). With so much terrible grammar and punctuation, and often lack of punctuation, present in today's world, this is a must-have for aspiring writers, especially journalists.

        4 out of 5 stars Decent reference.......2007-01-11

There's no mystery here, and it's not intended to be a grammatically pristene work of art. It is, after all, a 96-page reference manual. If you are used to writing/editing literary and academic styles and need to refresh your memory on the punctuation variables in journalistic writing, this is an easy point-to reference that won't take up any more of your precious time than absolutely necessary.

2 out of 5 stars Full of mistakes.......2005-03-03

It appears that some fool edited the cautionary examples for correctness. (p. 34) The grammar is poor ("verboten" as a noun? (p. 85)), and the usage is non-standard (Commas are "trundled out"? (p.37)). Some passages are self-contradictory ("With Adjectives, p. 37).

This book is not a total disaster, but I can hardly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Efficient and entertaining, but slim for my personal taste.......2004-05-03

Written with lively and direct prose, Rene J. Cappon's guide to punctuation succeeds in being a useful resourse for the busy journalist. No reader need fear about getting bogged down in the finer points of periods. If such a situation threatens to occur, Capon is quick to suggest a workaround. This leaves the stickiest questions even stickier, a real prickle for someone as persnickety as me. But for the journalist, or journalism student, I heartily recommend it.

To those looking for a deeper understanding of punctuation, I caution against this slim tome. Organized into seventeen chapters by punctuation, some of them no more than a half of a page ('The Ampersand') and some as many as sixteen ('The Comma'), the AP GUIDE TO PUNCTUATION lacks the philosophical depth and historical background of recent bestseller EATS, SHOOTS, & LEAVES as well as the dry grammar books of days past. The examples, while fun, are not nearly as comprehensive as one expects in any book that bills itself as a reference.

By way of example, here is the entire entry for Irregular Plurals under 'The Apostrophe':

        ---

Irregular plurals also take the apostrophe: children's hour, women's rights, gentlemen's traditions, men's club, and so do nouns that are the same in singular: the single moose's antlers, the deer's track, the two corps' travels. The apostrophe stays whether the meaning is singular or plural.

        ---

No mention is made that it is preferable to disambiguate the singular and plural in such cases. Especially in journalistic writing, where clarity and simplicity are the twin grails of good style.

A dedicated journalist might prefer a true grammar of the English language or the complete and comprehensive AP STYLE BOOK. While they may be dry, they will certainly go a good deal further in answering the questions that arise in all aspects of writing.

5 out of 5 stars A Graceful, Witty Guide to Punctuation.......2003-12-11

As a professional editor for nearly two decades, I heartily recommend this book. Cappon's writing is clear, funny, and creative, and he makes the nuances of punctuation memorable. His reasoning is logical, and his explanations and examples are very helpful. Interestingly, though this is an Associated Press publication, some of the style differs from the official A.P. Stylebook. So if A.P. is your background, be aware of this.

Cappon is a terrific writer, and anyone else who writes would benefit immensely from this lucid guide to punctuation.

These plays reflect the full range of Stoppard's gifts as well as his craftsmanship and versatility. His work for radio complements (and sometimes prefigures) his work for the stage.

Included in this volume is In the Native State, which became the stage play Indian Ink.

Albert's Bridge won the Italia Prize and In the Native State won a Sony Award.

Let's face it; if you're looking at Volume Two of a collection, you're already a fan. This is a collection of short radio plays, mainly from early in Stoppard's career. Some are minor classics (Dominic Boot, Albert's Bridge) and others are forgettable. However, all of them show the true Stoppard spark, wit and intellect. Don't expect work of the same quality as the major plays, and you'll be happy.

Tess Gallagher's poems in this collection chart the painful road of mourning, memory, and change following the death of her beloved husband, fiction writer Raymond Carver. From feelings of sharing death to memories of valentines they gave each other, and then in an upward arch through Zen imagery of cherry blossoms and curved bridges, Gallagher's poems come to no easy rest on the banks of a new life and new loves. But for all those who have experienced tragedy, the poems relate a common assurance that a crossing into survival can be reached.

        Book Description

Tess Gallagher, one of America's most accomplished poets, presents her sixth book, a descent into the world of the dead, a remembrance of her recently deceased beloved, whose presence and absence are recalled in sombre lyrical rhythms and with a extraordinary range of expressions of love and sadness.

Devoid of self-pity or illusion, yet full of dream and vision and wisdom, these beautifully intense and powerful poems bestow the gift of words to the widow's silence, to the silence of all who are muted by grief and loss. With this unusual volume, arranged in six carefully paced movements to suggest the journey from death to recovery, Gallagher charges language with its utmost responsibilities: here poetry aspires deeply and urgently beyond its cultural marginality to embrace the paradox of sharing unshareable pain and to assume again an Orphic voice and a communal necessity.

This is a great book of poems written near the time of her husband's death. I read the review of this book and purchased it for a friend whose husband had died. Now, 5 years later, she still tells me how much she loved this book and how much it meant to her. This is a great book. It is particularly wonderful for someone who has lost their husband.

5 out of 5 stars Poems certainly worthy of highest praise..........2000-01-12

The passion and imagery contained in this book of highly personal poems astounds! I hope Ms. Gallagher's book will gain the recognition it deserves. To allow us to come so close to the poet seems to be a rarity in much of today's poetry. This incredible sharing will grab you and not let go. Our thanks to Ms. Gallagher . . .

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinarily complex and daring book of elegies.......1999-07-09

Gallagher, whose decade-long relationship with the great short story writer Raymond Carver ended with Carver's early death to cancer in 1987, has written a masterpiece. Largely underrecognized, Moon Crossing Bridge has yet to receive its full due as one of the most deeply thoughtful and passionate poetic works on the subject of loss to emerge in recent memory. Gallagher has allowed the language that rose from her grief to carry her into the mystery that constitutes the borderland between the dead and those left behind. Her words sway like the tough threads of a hammock strung between the two worlds, holding us aloft as we allow ourselves to risk belief in paradoxical truths: that in the poetic universe to which Gallagher holds fast, a loved one can be truly with us and truly not with us at once, and loss and horror and delight can coexist in a strange harmony. In Gallagher's extraordinary book, the dark basin of terrible loss is not only inhabited, it is rich in hues and textures and possibilities. Using images culled as much from her travels around the world with Carver as from her years spent both with and without him in the Pacific Northwest, with this volume Gallagher has given a rare gift to those of us with loss in our backgrounds. She has journeyed as a shaman does, to map that enduring human trek from overwhelming pathos to multidimensional, even joyful, insight -- with unfailing courage and honesty. One day Gallagher will be seen for the unparalleled talent she is. For now, we who read and do the work to understand her words can be among a privaleged group of fierce and well-rewarded fans.

When do buffalo look like cockroaches? When does a nuclear site look like a work of art? No doubt about it, things look different from the air. Flying high above the ground in a plane and looking down is one thing; photographing it is quite another. But Marilyn Bridges has met the challenge with imagination and verve. Viewing her black and white photographs of World War II aircraft gunnery tracks in the California desert, Washington monuments, or Oklahoma wheat fields, one can "feel something about our interaction with the land" and experience "the pure emotional response" Bridges gets behind the camera.

          Book Description

This Land Is Your Land offers a unique perspective on the American landscape, making the familiar fantastic, as well as an aesthetic experience of dizzying proportions. Marilyn Bridges takes us on an inspiring journey, as we look down together on the fleeting moments and lasting signatures of the United States that are etched on our continent. An aerial photographer who has explored ancient cultures around the world for more than a decade, Bridges has now focused her attention on a subject no less intriguing: the grandeur of America.

By flying and photographing at low altitudes, and by maintaining a sensuous closeness with her subject, Bridges avoids the simplistic representation of landscape as mere design. Divided regionally, This Land Is Your Land accents the variety of America, but follows civilization's uneasy interaction with the environment as a common thread. We see the earth shaped and reshaped to service humanity. Monuments rise to celebrate our achievements even as nature wards off intrusion. Fledgling communities spring up among lava and sand. Scars left by clear-cutting, mining, and nuclear waste raise concerns for the future. Yet here, too, there is ironic wit. The towering presidential portraits at Mount Rushmore appear dwarfed by surrounding mountains. The Statue of Liberty hides in plain sight, completely swathed in scaffolding. From the intimacy of a farmhouse to the majesty of the Grand Canyon, Bridges's original vision provides an unequaled perspective on the land in which we live.

In the Book's Essay by acclaimed writer William Least Heat-Moon, and the Afterword by Bridges, we are given insight into the photographer's working process and the inspiration behind her images. Certainly, This Land Is Your Land contains an urgent environmental message; in every photograph we sense a longing for a purer time, before humanity dismissed the land's indigenous curves and flow in favor of the urban grid. Still, Bridges offers no facile solutions or sentimental appeals. Faced with the jumble of American progress, we look for a vision of nature as idyllic--only to be awed by the savage forces unleashed by Mount St. Helens and the Kilauea volcano. Never what you expect, This Land Is Your Land provides page after page of visual surprises. The book inspires in us a haunting and profound admiration for a vibrant land which will prevail long after our civilization has gone.

          The Moon Bridge
          Marcia Savin

The book was about how a girl comes to Ruthie's school and they become best friends. The book takes a sudden turn when the attack on Pearl Harbor happens. They are getting closer and hang out all the time. Ruthie's old friend, Shirl makes fun of Mitzi. Ruthie stands up for Mitzi. That's how they become friends. Just as soon as the are about to go into the sixth grade, Mitzi has to leave.
I liked this book because it's how a friendship lasted three years even though Ruthie didn't know where Mitzi was. The book that is related to this is, Under the Blood Red Sun, because it's also about Pearl Harbor. It is also about a Japanese boy and his American friend

4 out of 5 stars The Moon Bridge.......2001-05-24

Mitzi and Ruthie were best friends. Ruthie doesn't know what to do when Mitzi and her family were forced to leave the town. But Ruthie just wanted to find her friend and know why so many others were made to leave their homes too. Ruthie doesn't know where Mitzi and her family are. Mitzi and Ruthie continues write each other, but their promise that they will meet again in their favorite place. The Moon Bridge.

I think this is a good book, with just a little vit of sadness, because Mitzi and Ruthie had to separate their good relation ship. But they will never forgot each other, and they hope will meet again in The Moon Bridge.

5 out of 5 stars Very realistic and moralistic put in a fantastic story!.......2001-05-20

This book is unbelieveable! It really captures how the World War 2 was like to everybody back then! It teaches youngesters about the War. It definetly shows that anybody of any culture can become friends. Just because some cultures seem bad or most of them are bad, it doesn't mean all of them are. It really is a true inspiring friendship story that stirs new emotions and thoughts (including opinions) inside you!

5 out of 5 stars Good Book For 4th-6th Graders With Feeling & Historical Fact.......1999-04-13

Ruthie and Mitzi become best friends despite the fact that Mitzi is considered an enemy, particularly since the Pearl Harbor bombing. Ruthie wants to be part of the crowd but is determined to be a friend to an outsider. Mitzi, an American of Japanese descent, is close to her family but lonely for other friendships. Mitzi and her family are forced to leave town and are placed in an interment camp. Ruthie writes to Mitzi, promising to meet again at the 'Moon Bridge' in the Tea Garden. Both girls are scared and concerned for each other. This book portrays values and is also educational. Girls in this age group would probably enjoy this book more than boys would but it could lead to conversation about the war, building an interest for them.

5 out of 5 stars An educational, yet interesting book........1996-11-26

I know, I know. If you hear "Read it, it's an educational experience" one more time, you're gonna hurl, right? Well, hurl away. Read it, it's an educational experience. Not only is it an educational experience though. I found this book to be a wonderfully real story portraying the treatment of the Japanese in America. Two young girls, one American, one Japanese, become extremely close friends. The two girls did almost everything together.....until all the Japanese were "escorted out of the city". The Japanese most certaianly were not escorted out of the city. They were forced to leave the city, taking very few belongings, and go to secluded areas. No one knew exactly where they had gone, and most people didn't care, considering the "Japs" traitors. Yes this story is educational, and you are guaranteed to learn. You are also guaranteed to enjoy the story and feel the emotions of the characters. Read away, and realize that "learning can be fun"

The architecture of this building (formerly the SF Public Library) and the art inside are fascinating. The interior is a mash-up of old and new styles, which echoes the museum collection of ancient and modern Asian art. This book is a must-have for architecture and art enthusiasts.
