It's a terrific book.
Worthy of being in every outdoor book library.

Northern Bushcraft.......2007-01-24
This book is an excellent survival manual, although it is specifically focused on survival in the north woods of canada, ie. Boreal forest, or Taiga (In fact, the previous edition was titled Northern Bushcraft). The line-drawing illustrations are very good at conveying the concepts. Knife and axe-craft are a large part of this book because knowing how to work wood in these cold northern forests is key to both long and short-term survival there. But, there is also much more that makes the book a comprehensive survival guide.
Many survival manuals go over the generalities of wilderness survival in many different climates, and many others are focused on 'primitive skills' type of wilderness survival. This book is rather unique in its specific focus on the Boreal forest environment and woodcraft, but it is definitely a classic survival manual, and highly recommended.
Essential.......2007-01-16
Picked this up for my husband for Christmas. Even though he is an avid "survival" and camping guy, he learned a lot from this book. Although this is an excellent starting volume for those just beginning in bushcraft, it has enough info that seasoned campers will thoroughly enjoy and learn from it. My husband found the axe craft chapter particularly useful.
Too specific to Canadian location.......2007-01-11
As a general rule I believe there is usually "something" that can be taken from most books and videos on this subject. It may only be a better demonstration or a twist on an old technique. I bought this book because it is supposed to be "a classic". I am somewhat disappointed. The title mentions "Wilderness Survival" but it IS NOT a survival book. Although it does contain some very usefull info, about 1/3 of it is too specific to the authors home in Canada to be of much use to everyone else. The author references many plants and trees specific to HIS area. Most of the pictures are crude line drawings. This is more of a Bushcraft, live in the woods without anything more than a knife, kind of books; NOT A SURVIVAL reference. All-in-all, read the book once to pick up some ideas that may not be covered in other books but do not expect to use it as a reference.
Bushcraft: Outdoor Skills & Wilderness Survival by Mors Kochanski.......2007-01-10
Great detailed description of outdoor living in the Boreal forest.
Each chapter is well laid out and FULL of information.
This book would serve well for short survival situations, but is more suited for longer periods in the wilderness.
Mors Kochanski is a true master of his environment.

Usful, informative in a nice but heavy body.......2004-11-17
I have Ray's The Outdoor Survival Handbook, which is far more suitable as a real handbook. On the other hand, nobody promised that Bushcraft will be the same, or even similar. It's seriously big for field use. You have to read and learn in your home, practice in the backyard and use the knowledge on the field. Anyway, because it have far more informative illustrations and more verbose text, it's far easier to get a complete knowlege about basic surviving techniques, meanwhile the handbook may have a pocket in your backpack.
It was quiet frustrating to get it after almost three months of waiting with the unquestionable evidences of its origin. Shame on Amazon to simply buy the item in a nearby bookshop.

A good coffee table book,But far too heavy and impractical for taking with you camping/travelling.Illustrations dark and not clear.Same old information, which has already been written by others.

Back to Nature with Ray Mears.......2002-12-10
British survival expert Ray Mears' newest book "Bushcraft" will give you good advice for when you wonder out in the wilderness. It covers all basic survival skills, from where to find food and water to how to make shelters and fire, and it does this for all kinds of environments, from the desert to the arctic. Although Mears himself looks like your average English office clerk, his knowledge of nature and survival, partly learned from hunter-gatherers like Australian Aboriginals and African Kung San bushmen, is truly impressive. Through a number of survival courses I did myself, I found out that the techniques described in Bushcraft work well, but they often do require quite some practice to master.
The book is filled with attractive colour photographs from Mears' trips to remote locations like Alaska and the Honduran rainforest, also covered in his BBC television survival series. You have to realize though, that because of the book's weight and dimensions, it's not really a practical field guide for in your rucksack but more a book that you would comfortably read at home.
And it almost looks like Mears was in a hurry to finish the book, because the last chapter, about finding food, ends rather abruptly and contains very little information on hunting and trapping while Mears acknowledges that these are fundamental bushcraft skills. Finally, a note to foreign readers, you might need a dictionary for translating the English plant, tree and animal names.
Wow, dont get lost without it!.......2002-06-28
This is a great book. After seeing Ray Mears on the Travel Channel, I had to get this book! It has great pictures and illustrations... a must-buy!

Book Description
Earn-lay atin-Lay? No, not that kind of Latin! You can learn true Latin, with conjugations, declensions, and all those extra syllables – and it’s easier than you think. In fact, most people mistakenly think of learning Latin as perhaps the most useless, tedious, and difficult thing to do on earth. They couldn’t be more wrong.
Latin For Dummies takes you back for a quick jaunt through the parlance of ancient Rome, as well as discussing the progress of Latin into church language, and its status today as the “dead” language that lives on in English, Spanish, Italian, and most other Western tongues. Written for those with zero prior knowledge of Latin, this snappy guide puts the basics at your fingertips and steers clear of the arcane, schoolmarm stereotype of endless declensions and Herculean translations. Easy-to-understand sections describe:
- Latin you already know
- Grammar
- Pronunciation
- Latin in action
- Latin in law
- Latin in medicine
- Latin for impressing your friends
- And much more
No dusty tome or other such artifact, Latin For Dummies makes learning fun and brings the language to life by presenting conversations in various Roman settings, as well as providing fun facts and stories about classical life. And if you feel you may actually have a negative aptitude for the language, don’t worry; pronunciations and translations follow every expression, and a helpful mini-dictionary graces the book’s last pages. You’ll also find out about:
- The quotable Roman
- Latin graffiti
- Latin authors who’s who
- Gladiator Latin
- Latin in love, marriage, and family
- From the mouth of Julius Caesar
- Romans on drink
- Helpful Latin-related Web sites
- Fun and games exercises
Designed to introduce and familiarize you with the language rather than make you the next Cicero, Latin For Dummies gives you all the tools you need to work at your own pace to learn as much or as little as you like. So noli timere (no-lee tih-may-reh) – “have no fear” – and carpe diem (“pick up Latin For Dummies today”)!

Warning: not a coursebook.......2007-08-26
This is not the book you are going to learn latin from. If you are in for that kind of material you had better try Teach Yourself Beginner's Latin Audiopackage if you are a beginner who would also like to listen to a good approximation of the classical pronunciation, or Latin Via Ovid: A First Course Second Edition, if you are beginner but more ambitious, let's say your purpose is to read Harry Potter in Latin (Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Latin Edition).
But back to this book, which is a kind of collage of the Latin language: it lists the different areas of life where you can actually meet Latin words and expressions, helps you with cultural background, Latin jokes and short dialogues and yes, gives some elements of the language. To sum it up, a delicious side dish for learners of Latin or a cheese-board for those who are simply interested in classical education after a good meal.
Another Great Dummy book.......2007-03-08
I need to learn both Spanish and French. Within a year I need to know just enough to get by. I felt that the task was a little high. A friend that speaks 9 languages made a suggest. Learn Latin first because it is the root of Spanish, French and English.
I have gone through the entire Latin course and I am now on to Spanish. Gee, am I glad I did the Latin first. My friend was right. I had tried to learn Spanish before and I was lost. By learning some Latin learning Spanish is now much easier.
I did the Rosetta Stone and read this book on the side. The two together make a great combination.
Really does help........2007-01-11
I have been struggling with Latin, and when I purchased this book alot of the terms began to make sense. This is good to be used as a reference with other texts. I used it with Wheelock to some success
Good Start.......2007-01-10
Having carefully looked through many of the various simplified (Dummies style) books on Latin, I chose this one. It's a good introduction and entertaining. It won't teach you Latin, but you'll get a flavor of the subject. If you want to go farther, Wheelock's is a good choice in my opinion.
I'm a Latin Dummy!.......2006-01-31
This was a great introduction to Latin for someone who has never studied it before. I have always wanted to learn Latin but really needed a starter course. The only problem is there is A LOT of information and they go through it quickly. I wouldn't recommend this book as the only one you read to learn Latin but it is a great introduction and overview. It is also very fun to read, not like an actual textbook. I am now moving on to Wheelock!

Customer Reviews:
I've had better .......2007-03-26
the book was informative but it left out several interesting islands. the book only covered 11 islands & i know there is more than that. for a first time visitor to the caribbean you need information on all the islands so you can choose which one is best for YOU!!! As i said okay book but fodors or frommers is a much better choice.
What about the other 90% of the Caribbean?.......2004-04-16
Oh dear, oh dear. This is the Caribbean from a Dummy. There is far more to it than this horribly limited selection of islands.
Aruba is in, but not Bonaire or Curacao. Nor St Maarten to round off the Netherlands and Dutch Antilles, plus its French half St Martin.
Grand Cayman yes - Cayman Brac and Little Cayman? These beauties are a short hop away for the discerning traveler.
Jamaica is in, but not Cuba.
Puerto Rico is there but not the Dominican Republic or the Spanish Virgin Islands. In better times Haiti can be an attractive destination.
BVI and USVI are there. No sign of Anguilla.
Further down the great chain of the East Caribbean islands all we see is Barbados (which is stuck out in the Atlantic anyway and does not count itself as East Caribbean). These islands are almost all popular holiday destinations for land or cruise travelers. St Kitts and Nevis (laid back), Antigua and Barbuda (365 beaches), the French islands Guadeloupe and Martinique (incomparable cooking and rum), Dominica (the only true rain forest in the Caribbean), St Lucia (spectacular), St Vincent and the Grenadines (sailing as good as BVI), Grenada (an under-appreciated gem with beaches every bit as good as Grand Cayman), Trinidad and Tobago (restful Tobago). No to mention a few islands like St Eustatius and Saba in the north, plus volcanic Montserrat for at least for a day trip from Antigua.
Anyone who relied on this book for a true view of the Caribbean really would be a Dummy. There is not one country in here that uses the East Caribbean dollar.
PS I live and work in the Caribbean. I have lived on four islands, visited thirty-six at the last count, and I am still delighted and amazed to find wonders round every corner.
incomplete.......2003-08-01
The review says that the book includes information on St. Lucia and St. Maarten/St. Martin. It does not. It totally ignores most of the smaller islands of the Caribbean. I realize that they could not fit an in-depth analysis of all the Caribbean islands into one book, but to totally ignore the vast majority of islands makes this book incomplete and disappointing.
Excellent and Current!.......2001-05-02
This book is great. It has so much information about the caribbean. These Garrett folks are hilarious. They seem to put their heart into this book and I appreciate it. There is a lot of info for couples looking for romantic spots and for families with kids. This rocks!

Like A Drive Through Rural West Virginia.......2000-05-18
Ex-sheriff, Cub Hamil, is a widower and an outdoorsman of good character who genuinely cares about the people he has served. He looses the sheriff's election because he has spent more time tracking a coyote that has been killing his neighbor's sheep than he has spent politicking. When a local ex-convict is murdered, a teenage girl is accused of the crime, and newly-elected Sheriff Puffenbarger accepts the accusation without further investigation. Cub's decision to investigate the murder places him and Maggie, the new woman in his life, in great peril. When Cub discovers the identity of the killer, he becomes the hunted as well as the skilled hunter. As the story of the hunt progresses, the reader begins to realize that there is also another story. It is the story of the people of rural West Virginia. The farmers, the general-store owner, the new postmistress, and all the other characters that author, Donald McCaig, introduces us to have their own histories. With few words McCaig lets the reader know what motivates each of them. There is nothing fancy here. The people and the places are real and readable.
