Also available in a hardcover edition (159385157X, $45.00), Integrating Instruction: Literacy And Science is the collaborative effort of Judy McKee (Science consultant, Wilmette Public Schools, Wilmette, Illinois) and Donna Ogle (Professor of Reading and Language, National-Louis University). A part of the Guilford "Tools for Teaching Literacy" series, Integrating Instructions covers such topics as integrating science and language in science units, writing to learn in science, effective uses of technology, the connection that can bridge science-fiction to a passion for learning, and much more. Customer Reviews:
If you like fantasy you'll like this book.......2002-01-31
I just finshed Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. It was an ok book. It was an ok book because it was not a believable story. Another reason is because I do not like fairy tales. Rats were trained to read and write. A mouse helps a crow out of a trap. So if you like fantasy you will like this book. So go ask librarian for this book at your local libary.
Good read for the price.......2001-03-16
I thought this collection was ace! The one set in the museum was the best. It was kind of creepy and sad in parts but has a very interesting story and the end explains a lot. If you have kids, they will like this one too.
I did not like so much "M.C. Higgins the Great" which I thought was more for boys. I didn't read this one though so I don't know what it's about except for the first five pages.
For all your parents out there my Mom liked "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwiler" as well. If you liked reading you will like this even if you are any age at all.
I am still reading "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimth",
I also recomend "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" in another book.
Three timeless classics.......2000-05-18
I was delighted to find these three classic childrens books in one volume. I read these stories as a child and I wanted to be able to share them with my nieces and nephews. All three books teach life lessons while presenting a fun adventure. The Mixed-up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is an excellent story about two children who decide to run away from home and hide in a museum. The story can be read a chapter a night. It keeps the children interested and allows them see museums in a whole new light. My second favorite book in the collection is The Rats of Nimth. The book is so realistic and compelling, you forget the main characters are rodents. Finally, M.C. Higgens the Great. The main character is quirky, fun and has so many adventures! Truly, excellent stories to read aloud to your children or as a gift.

From a perch on his 40-foot pole (a gift from his father for swimming across the Ohio River), M.C. likes to slide his hand over the rolling mountains, smooth out the sky, and fluff up the trees to the south of Sarah's Mountain. To the north, though, no amount of pretending can make the whine of bulldozers and deep gashes in the mountain disappear. Ever since M.C.'s great-grandmother Sarah came here as a runaway slave, Sarah's Mountain has been home to the Higgins family. But now their home is threatened by the strip-mining that has left a giant slag heap perched precariously above their house. Will the two strangers who appear in the hills help M.C. save his family?
Reissued in celebration of its 25th anniversary, M.C. Higgins the Great has a power that runs deeper than the coal seam snaking through M.C.'s mountain. The intensity of family bonds, the depth of rural superstition, and the grim tragedy of environmental destruction weave together in a story that is as complex as it is beautiful. Not surprisingly, Virginia Hamilton, who has won every major award given to authors, received the Newbery Medal, the National Book Award, and the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award for this excellent novel. (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Mayo Cornelius Higgins sits on his gleaming, forty-foot steel pole, towering over his home on Sarah's Mountain. Stretched before him are rolling hills and shady valleys. But behind him lie the wounds of strip mining, including a mountain of rubble that may one day fall and bury his home.
M.C. dreams of escape for himself and his family. And, one day, atop his pole, he thinks he sees it -- two strangers are making their way toward Sarah's Mountain. One has the ability to make M.C.'s mother famous. And the other has the kind of freedom that M.C. has never even considered.
Download Description
M.C.'s family is rooted to the slopes of Sarah's Mountain. His great-grandmother escaped to the mountain as a runaway slave and made it her home. It bears her name, and her descendants have lived there ever since. When M.C. looks out from atop the gleaming forty-foot pole that his father planted in the mountain for him -- a gift for swimming the Ohio River -- he sees only the rolling hills and shady valleys that stretch out for miles in front of him. And M.C. knows why his father never wants his family to leave. But when M.C. looks behind, he sees only the massive remains of strip mining -- a gigantic heap of dirt and debris perched threateningly on a cliff above his home. And M.C. knows they cannot stay. So when two strangers arrive in the hills, one bringing the promise of fame in the world beyond the mountains and the other the revelation that choice and action both lie within his grasp, M.C.'s life is changed -- forever. In 1974, Virginia Hamilton dazzled the world with her powerful account of a young man's coming of age trapped between heritage of his mountain home and his desires for the future. Twenty-five years later, M.C. Higgins, the Great remains the only novel ever to win the Newbery Medal, the National Book Award, and the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award. It is truly an American classic.

It Has A Few Plots, They're Just Very, Very Slow.......2007-04-02
From what I can tell, M.C. Higgins the Great has three main plots. The central one being the possibility of M.C.'s mother being discovered and marketed as the newest superstar singer. There are two other subplots as well, a strong one and a weak one.
The strong subplot makes the reader aware of an avalanche of spoil possibly falling on M.C.'s house due to poor mining practices in the area. It could actually be tied in with the central plot about the singing, but I have an easier time just separating these events into different categories. The weak subplot is your classic coming of age story, where M.C. has his first (I guess it's his first) major crush on a girl. This subplot is not really needed except to make M.C. more angry during the last chapter of the book.
Now why it takes 275 LONG pages to cover the three plots, I don't really know. There are definitely some interesting parts of the book, but these good parts are seperated by so much of what I see as trivial padding. I didn't really see a need for the scene where M.C. and his mom go swimming at all, and there are so many other smaller scenes in the book that really aren't worth mentioning.
I think the book is okay; I just wish it were much shorter.
An incredible journey for the serious reader.......2006-11-18
Like most great literature, M.C. HIGGINS, THE GREAT is a marvel.
I don't understand the bad reviews; this book deserves high marks for its lyrical style, touching and relevant story and dynamic character conflicts.
In a nutshell, the story involves a coming of age for our M.C.: there is conflict between old ways (e.g. superstitions/prejudices; regional culture vs. hopes for escape; father vs. son); there is a unique romantic subplot and an unusual, haunting friendship.
The scenes and settings are rich and detailed--almost surreal. But like all ambitious literature, you must be ready to embark on this journey before you can enjoy it. If you had trouble reading it the first time, try it again later. You won't be sorry.
All in all, M.C. Higgins, the Great is a highly rewarding read for both adults and older kids.
Not for the Lazy Reader.......2006-08-20
It's obvious from other reviews that people read this book with preconceived notions. Because of the title and the awards, people believe this is going to be one barn-burner of a read.
It is not. Not much happens in the book, at least not physically. The action in the book comes from M.C.'s inner transformation as he becomes aware of a world beyond the insular world of his family, and eventually finds the strength to face life's difficulties and challenge the beliefs of his father.
This book is not for most children, who will likely find it boring, especially if they are used to Harry Potter-type adventures. This book also isn't for readers who are used to stories that tie everything up in a neat, pretty package. The ambiguity of the ending isn't completely satisfying, but it actually isn't that important. What is important is how M.C. has changed. At the end of the book, you know that whatever happens, M.C. is going to be OK.
Throughout the book, M.C. uses the title "M.C. Higgins, the Great" because of his physical abilities; being the only one who could climb the pole, swim across the Ohio River, and swim the lake tunnel. In the end, he lives up to the title because of his newfound inner strength to take action against his fears and make his own way in life.
Other miscellaneous comments:
- The lettuce leaves were for baiting M.C.'s rabbit traps.
- The book really doesn't take off until the beginning of Chapter Seven. Until then, it is merely setting up the characters, the situation, and the surroundings.
- The vernacular takes some getting used to.
- The "reverse" prejudice against the "witchy" Killburns adds an interesting aspect to the story.
- Virginia Hamilton doesn't "pretty up" the story. There are a couple of incidents that are shocking, but ring true, such as the fight between M.C. and Lurhetta, and the killing of the rabbit.
- The pole is a symbol, both of M.C.'s ancestral ties to Sarah's Mountain and of M.C. transcending the limitations of those ties. When M.C. is on his pole, he is above it all.
- Throughout the book, M.C. depends on the "dude" to take his family away from danger. But when the "dude" lets him down, M.C. discovers that he has to take action himself.
This is not an easy book for children to read. But compared to the "candy" of what sometimes passes for children's literature, it is a welcome serving of nutritious food.
Consider yourself warned..........2006-07-17
We tried to like M.C. we really tried. The book has won so many prestigious awards including being the first book in history to win the Newbery, Boston Globe Horn Book Award and the National Children's Book Award in its year. Yet neither my son or I could plow through this one and we are both avid readers. I'm still puzzling over exactly how a forty foot pole that moves with bicycle wheels attached would work. And why did he tie lettuce leaves to his hands to greet the morning? The book is surreal yet Hamilton treats the book like it was realistic fiction so the book can't really be accepted as fantasy, realistic fiction or any other known genre. All I can say is this book winning so many awards compares to those tailors who made the emperor's new clothes being praised for their fashion sense and style.
Pretty good........2006-07-14
M.C. Higgins the Great is a pretty good story. I like its feeling and how it portrays Sarah's Mountain. I agree with another review that sometimes a beautiful or well-written scene is sometimes just followed up by regular, sometimes boring writing. I don't really get how it won such a high honor as the National Book Award, but I can understand why it won the Newbery. I like how the author showed M.C.'s thoughts between paragraphs, like "Going to be my best day." or "We stay here and die." It had some pretty heartfelt passages. I don't really know what to think of the ending. I don't think it was that good, but somehow it seemed pretty necessary because it showed then how M.C. stood up to his father and did what he had to do. The last two pages are pretty moving, too. I can understand why some people liked this book and why some people didn't. I'm kind of in the middle. Anyway, I'd recommend "M.C. Higgins, the Great."

M.C Higgins not so good.......2006-12-01
Alot of people said M.C Higgins the great book was good but i have to disagree it really had no thrilling plot it just wrote on and on about the mountains and how much he loved them. Later the author described the killburns as witches and they were evil and death romed there lands. but later in the book it made them seen as normal people so it's really controdicts itself but it's not like a revolation for the character it's just plain confusing in the end it got more interesting especially with the girl leaving and the mount rolling down the mountain. so over all i didn't really like the book and i wouldn't recomend it to people but there are plenty of other good books that amazon sells so maybe try another book.
