Customer Reviews:
Immensely dense book that provides a good framework.......2007-05-24
Overall, I feel this book has aided my own amateur training program.
Many of the other reviewers wrote many good criticism/praise about the framework in terms of the physical TRAINING sections. But, oddly enough nobody mentions the biochemistry sections which I also found useful.
I'm a novice cyclist and for me, the section on proper nutrition was enlightening. Dr. Morris goes through a fairly large list of ergogenic aids and the pros and cons of each of them. There were simple things like his views on the: use of caffine, dos and donts of high altitude training, proper usage about creatine, etc. As mentioned in other reviews, this book provides a good framework for proper food intake.
Overall, I felt this book and was a good starting point for me to move onto other books for continued guidance. I highly recommend it.
Performance Cycling works.......2006-06-08
This book is easy to read, easy to follow, and best of all, easy to apply. Simple but effective workout plans will improve anyone's level of mental and physical performance on the bike.
All I can say is that the program worked for me...with some modification........2006-06-07
This book was a gift from my wife for Christmas 2003. I had signed up to go to the Tour de France in July with a Aussie tour group. I had heard from others from previous trips the daily rides of 70 to 120 miles always had an ultra-competitive group of Cat 1 and 2 riders. My goal was to time trial Alpe d'Huez and be able to hammer up some of the steeper climbs with the really good riders and ride 1100 miles in 10 days. When I received this book I had been cycling for about 5 years and doing triathlons for about four years. My old routine was go long on the weekends and during the work week to do a day of intervals with a day off followed by a 2 hour tempo ride followed by another day off.
This author advocates doing a big block of intensity followed by several days off which was different for me.
I did his program for the "stage race rider" and blocked high intensity days on Thu and Fri followed by a long 6 to 8 hour ride (much longer than he had in his program) on Saturday and then another 3 hours on Sunday at easy pace. Mon-Wed were off days or easy spinning.
At first this was very difficult! The very first weekend, I felt wiped out by Sunday (after 4 hard days in a row) but took three days off the bike and on the next thursday I felt really strong. I repeated the program the next week...same feeling by Sunday..kind of wiped out and wondering if I was going to burn out (which is a concern with this program)...three days of easy spinning followed. Well, on Thursday (two and half weeks into program) I was a frickin animal on my interval ride. Holding 29 mph for about 4 minutes before poopin out. Some guys can do that for an hour - I'm not one of them. But before this program I couldn't come close to doing that. So I started to see results after a few weeks.
By the time the Tour de France came around I was as strong as I've ever been on a bike. Being a Cat 5 rider I was now doing training rides with Cat 3's and they were telling me "damn dude, you're really hammering today...way to keep up with us." I could never keep up with this group in years past.
Why the success. Two things. I think the back to back intensity that the author advocates is KEY and ONLY if you allow enough rest after. I would almost always bounce back from my three off days with increased power. The second thing is the modification to my weekend rides. I agree with some of the reviewers that the mileage can seem scant compared to previous training (I was doing about 800 miles per month before this book). What I did is shorten my weekday workouts per the author's program...but kept some really long LSD rides on the weekend. So I would be riding for only 1.5 hours on Thu and another 1.5 hours on Friday followed by a 120 mile hilly 8 hour ride on Sunday (thanks to my wife for the hall pass!) and another three hours on Sunday. That single Saturday LSD ride built up a lot of endurance for me that seemed to last. I rode 100 miles almost every day for 10 days in France without problem....and felt amazing time trialing up Alpe d'Huez. That summer was the best cycling shape I've ever been in and I had so much power compared to previous years.
Then I had a kid and moved to a new area that wasn't as fun to bike in...and so I have nothing to say about successive years using the program. I did it for one year and it really worked for me.
A training program that makes sense........2004-08-05
I found this book very directly and succinctly taught me what I need to know to become a better cyclist. The concepts that David Morris uses in this book should increase your understanding of what it takes to be a stronger, faster cyclist -and isn't that the reason why a bike racer or a wanna-be racer buys this kind of book?
The training program in this book is fairly straightforward and easy to understand. The program does not involve too many training cycles with a lot of different goals to reach within those cycles. The program Morris outlines is succinct and based on what I see as a logical goal. That means that knowing what you are going to do today and next week in the gym, on a trainer or on your bike is relatively easy to keep in mind. The actual schedule of work involved is hard to very hard but as the author states you adapt his program to meet your own requirements and because of its relative simplicity that is not too difficult to do.
I recommend this book for those cyclists who are seeking a practical training program to become a more powerful cyclist.
This Book is a [deceptive].......2004-03-24
The author just wants you to PAY HIM FOR COACHING! He won't give you enough information in the book to design your own training program and he won't answer a simple question about his book without GETTING MONEY FROM YOU IN ADVANCE. He's a con artist and put this book out to promote his "coaching". (...)

Customer Reviews:
Very informative, not dry........2007-09-28
I was expecting an essay-type book when I ordered this, the author uses humor to keep your interest while successfully explaining rather boring topics. I easily read this book in two hours without getting tired of it and retained most of what I'd read. This book tells you all you need to know about writing except what you should write about! I was impressed, it's not a very long book, but is packed full of good information.
Writer's bookshelf classic.......2007-09-23
James N Frey's book is already one of the classics and a damn good addition to any writer's bookshelf. He covers the whole process even though the book may seem too short to do so: The pace is fast, humorous and gritty from the first (characters, who they are and how to build them, by far the best starting point) all the way to the last(The Zen of Novel Writing, a ten page summary of the 'writers life'). I thought the second chapter (Three Greatest Rules of Dramatic Writing: Conflict! Conflict! Conflict! the most useful. Points are illustrated with examples from authors one knows and can relate to. A single objection: In an example (for 'Point of View', p. 100 in my copy) a single action revolver is fired by pulling the trigger over and over again (should be 'double' action). A great book and to me, worthwhile.

Damn Good Advice!.......2007-09-23
This is a damn good book about creating tight, well-constructed stories that stand a chance of selling. The discussion on Homo Fictus, advice on proving your premise, and many other gems are all worth buying this book to read. If you have only one book to guide your first steps into novel-writing then this is the one. I've read dozens but this book was the most fun, easiest to digest, and easiest to put into practice. Top banana!
Great for Beginners.......2007-08-09
After reading the reviews before I bought this book, I actually decided to start off reading The Art of Dramatic Writing by Lajos Egri, which Frey references a lot in How to Write a Damn Good Novel. It definitely helped, so I would recommend reading that first. This novel was excellent. It was easy to read and understand, and has tons of great writing tips. I would certainly recommend this book for beginners. Don't forget to take out your pencil and highlighters!
IT IS A "DAMN" GOOD BOOK.......2007-08-08
I think this book presents much information to writers. We can all benefit from Frey's opinions on characterization and storytelling. I picked up some pointers on dialogue. You don't have to be a beginner to learn from it. As a person struggling to write my first novel, I am feeling more inspired since reading it and wish more people would do the same.

Customer Reviews:
Wish I'd gotten the updated version.......2007-08-07
As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me. She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health. Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training. I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard. I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply.

Please note how old this edition is (1992!) and choose the updated edition Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding: The Complete Nutrition Book for Nursing Mothers. We've learned a lot about diet, nutrients, and bfing in the last 14+ years!
Well Written!.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book. I found that it was really easy to read and it didn't take long to read the entire book. I really didn't want to "diet" while breastfeeding but was wanting information on how I should eat while breastfeeding. I found that when I started eating better by following the book's suggestions and began excercising regularly, I started losing half a pound a week. I am now proud to say that I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter.
Are you kidding me...???.......2006-10-04
This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know. I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.
Excellent Read!!.......2006-05-29
This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it. It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding.
Book Description
For more than 30 years, Wendy Ewald has put cameras in the hands of children all over the world and helped them record their dreams and realities in images and words. Towards a Promised Land documents her work with 22 children new to the British seaside town of Margate. Some arrived fleeing countries afflicted by war, poverty or political strife, others by following their families from one town to the next. Over 18 months, Ewald photographed her subject-artists and interviewed them about their past and present lives, while teaching them how to make their own photographs. The resulting case studies capture the children at critical turning points in their lives. (Ewald's photographic portraits of the children have appeared as huge, iconic banners around Margate; the children's own projects formed an exhibition at a local gallery.) Through these displaced human beings, Towards a Promised Land touches some of the most salient issues confronting contemporary society. This "book of fragments" brings together Ewald's and the children's work with a host of interviews, writings and commentaries on the contemporary search for a sense of place in a world of constant and turbulent change.
Book Description
Childhood in the Promised Land is the first history of France's colonies de vacances, a vast network of summer camps created for working-class children. The colonies originated as a late-nineteenth-century charitable institution, providing rural retreats intended to restore the fragile health of poor urban children. Participation grew steadily throughout the first half of the twentieth century, "trickling up" by the late 1940s to embrace middle-class youth as well.
At the heart of the study lie the municipal colonies de vacances, organized by the working-class cities of the Paris red belt. Located in remote villages or along the more inexpensive stretches of the Atlantic coast, the municipal colonies gathered their young clientele into variously structured "child villages," within which they were to live out particular, ideal visions of the collective life of children throughout the long summer holiday. Focusing on the creation of and participation in these summer camps, Laura Lee Downs presents surprising insights into the location and significance of childhood in French working-class cities and, ultimately, within the development of modern France.
Drawing on a rich array of historical sources, including dossiers and records of municipal colonies discovered in remote town halls of the Paris suburbs, newspaper accounts, and interviews with adults who participated in the colonies as children, Downs reveals how diverse groups—including local Socialist and Communist leaders and Catholic seminarians—seized the opportunity to shape the minds and bodies of working-class youth. Childhood in the Promised Land shows how, in creating the summer camps, these various groups combined pedagogical theories, religious convictions, political ideologies, and theories about the relationship between the countryside and children's physical and cognitive development. At the same time, the book sheds light on classic questions of social control, highlighting the active role of the children in shaping their experiences.

A mystical adventure story in 17th century Poland........1998-08-23
The story is set in 17th century Poland, when a childless couple go to see a revered rebbe to attempt to conceive. He is able to promise them a boy on three conditions, which create the plot twists of a mystical mystery story.
The child is born and quickly recognized as a prodigy by the community. However, an evil local priest has designs on the child and he is kidnapped and raised to be a bishop. Things resolve themselves in the end in a preordained way.
I found the book very moving and a good book for my children to be introduced to Jewish life in the schetl.
Excellent historical novel on Jewish theme.......1998-04-05
I enjoyed this book very much, and read it almost in one sitting. The plot: Wicked priest abducts Jewish child to have him raised as a Christian, in 17th century Poland; son grows to debate father in forced Talmud disputation. Shades of both Edgar Mortara and the Nachmanides disputation, two historical events. It's a bit of a tear-jerker, the characters are a bit one-dimensional, the style is a bit simple and linear, but every now and then it feels good to read a straight story. I have a sneaky suspicion it was written for teenagers, but I don't really know. Maurice Mizrahi

A Family Odyssey.......2005-11-17
"I Promised God" was a moving and heartfelt journey for me. The author's visually descriptive and intelligent writing style kept me riveted and yearning to experience more of her story.
My partner and I were reading the book at the same time, and for several days it was our main topic of discussion. The book definitely initiated significant inner contemplation as I joined the author and her family in this turbulent, tragic, tender, and inevitably uplifting and soulful tale.
A Mother's Love.......2005-07-12
I love this book. Well written, soulful, and passionate, this is a true story of a beautiful and talented woman and her equally remarkable eldest son as they heroically navigate their way through challenging and devastating family and life dynamics. A love story of the highest order, this is an important chronicle of a young man's shaken world and the love and faith that ultimately bring him back to a second life. This book makes me want to be kind to all those who are lost and scared in the hopes that they,too--just like Dan through the help of his mother--can find their way home, again.
