Book Description
The paradoxical role nature plays in American myth and history grows in part from the male's reverent fascination with the wilderness and his equally strong impulse to dominate it. Many canonical literary works-think of Thoreau, Melville, Hemingway, Faulkner-look to the wild as the site for establishing a man's selfhood. But nature is just as often subjected to his most violent displays of mastery.
This tension lies at the heart of Eco-Man, which brings together two rapidly growing fields: men's studies and ecocriticism. The two disciplines have rarely if ever touched on each other; brought together, men's studies is freed from the typical limitation of an exclusively urban-centered perspective, while ecocriticism engages an "ecomasculine" lens through which to view the field. The book's contents are diverse, but the contributors all challenge our idea of masculinity as merely the social code of patriarchy. By complicating our cultural notions of nature and masculinity, the volume's twenty essays question whether we can construct a notion of manhood around ecological principles and practices-and if so, what this would look like, and how it would enrich men's studies.
The varied assembly of contributors to Eco-Man -- including historians, philosophers, poets, both male and female -- have all written with the general reader in mind. The result is a book as approachable as it is groundbreaking.

Eco-Man: Ideological inquiry and cultural assessment.......2005-05-31
A wonderful book! Allister synthesizes the work of leading scholars into a coherent and useful exploration of the budding ecocritical field. Both abundantly accessible and scholarly, Eco-man interdisciplinarily addresses intersecting issues of gender and ecology, pooling a variety of resources into a ligical, potent, and helpful conversation on what it means to be a man in relation to the natural world. While this book helped me contextualize my own boyhood outdoor experiences as "culturally constructed," it also offered an inspiring vision for how we might render these experences meaningful and generative in the future. I highly recomend this book for women and men, scholars and non-scholars alike, who are interested in ecology, culture, and literature.
Book Description
The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip is a comprehensive guide to all the diverse and fascinating ballparks throughout the country by two entertaining young writers whose love for the game of baseball and the game of life overflows from each page. Josh Pahigian and Kevin O'Connell's approach to skillfully planning and fully appreciating a road-trip or a visit to a single park is funny and irreverent and loaded with information designed to make the most of the experience.
Part travel manual, part ballpark atlas, part baseball history book, part restaurant and city guide, and, not least, part epic narrative, The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip encompasses all the essential elements of a full-blown baseball road-trip. Included are ticket and travel information, a detailed guide to the best and worst seats in each park, folklore and statistics on each park, tips on each park's trademark foods, and profiles of nearby sports bars and baseball attractions, all within a lively narrative that reminds us that baseball is often the ultimate metaphor for the important things in life.

Baseball Bible.......2007-04-06
I got this book for Christmas and it helped me through the long cold offseason! Josh and Kevin painstakingly researched all the stadiums including great seating suggestions, history of team and stadium, trivia and just great in-depth information.
The book is as much about the area around the park in the city and a great love of baseball and humorous anecdotes.
Very enjoyable for those that love baseball and ballparks. I am excited to get to some new parks and compare my opinions this season!
How do you trash the Dodger Dog?.......2006-08-06
After skimming through this book and finding out a lot of interested information, the most suprising was the trashing of the famous Dodger Dog hot dog these guys made.
Folks, if you're heading to Dodger stadium (and I am by no means a Dodger fan), I reccommend 3 dodger dogs, or 2 foot longs if you're feeling sassy.
The Fenway Frank and the DD are probably the two most talked about dogs in the MLB, and I've had both - the Dodger Dog blows the Fenway Frank right out of the water.
BEST BOOK EVER.......2006-07-30
I love how they put comedy in with the facts of the stadiums. They do a good job of reviewing area restaraunts and stadium foods. How much could you guys watch the game when you were testing out all the foods in the stadium! The MLB should have given them the rights to put the Seating Charts in the book. You Need to buy This Book!
great guide to stadiums.......2004-09-24
Having just return from a baseball road trip myself, visiting the new San Diego Petco Stadium, Oakland, Anahiem and BOB in Phoenix, I discovered that this book got a lot of merit in what it have to say. In almost all cases, I discovered that the authors have done their homework and their accessments of what is a good seat or bad turned out to be true. Although their reviews on food remains subjective, I discovered that what they say about it also got a lot of truth behind it. Oakland do have one of the best hot dogs and many dogs wrapped in up in these tin foils really do not tasted all that good. (Is that why we often overdose these hot dogs with massive amount flavoring?)
I have been to many other stadiums of the Major League and after reading the book, I discovered that what the authors' have to say would be a great guide to anyone else who may be looking to do such a vacation. Although the season is dying out this year, there is always next year and years on end.
When I go on such road trips, I usually do buy my tickets ahead of time and usually try to get the best seats money can buy. The authors' book seem to be written for people who do this on the fly or on the budget. There is nothing wrong with that but they should know that not everyone do it like they do.
The book come highly recommended by someone like me who likes to take a baseball road trips and have done so in the past. Its useful in planning such a trip, buying the tickets and eating out at these stadium. Great book which have been long over due.
A must for anyone planning to visit major league ballparks!.......2004-09-02
This book covers it all. From team and ballpark history to where to sit and what to eat. The authors do a great job in detailing the ins-and-outs of every ballpark. This is not your dry, boring reference book. It's an easy read with a lot of humor that any baseball fan will enjoy.

Great place to start.......2007-10-17
I'm coming back to German language learning after a long hiatus - about thirty years since High School German. This book is a great place to start; it provides interesting history of the German language, discussion of various parts of speech, and always ties it back to analogous words and phrases in English. There may be more advanced texts available, but this is an excellent starting point.
its ok.......2007-10-11
its an ok book for telling you things about the german language, but its phonetic listings are vague because they dont tell you how to pronouce some special charactors. you're probably better off getting a english-german dictionary and some audio cd's
common sense approach.......2007-08-27
Ive sampled many books and cd,s and this book takes the most direct and logical approach Ive found
Sehr gut für Anfänger!.......2007-08-23
Ed Swick is a good writer. He presents difficult material in a very clear manner.I have a couple of books by him and I have not been disappointed. And so it is with this book. This book introduces the student fully to the essentials of German grammar and vocabulary. He progresses in an orderly, logical fashion, starting with some background info on the language and progressing to the close relationship between English and German and showing the student how this can be a boon to his study. He then begins the grammatical discussion by introducing the German noun and its peculiarities, such as gender, case and the formation of plurals. In the gender section, he points out quite correctly that most German books tell the student that he must simply memorize the gender of each noun, but that German children do not do this in learning their own language. He the presents the patterns they learn in mastering their mother tongue. He also teaches similar patterns for learning the plurals of the nouns. Working with these patterns, one begins to develop a 'feel' for them in a relatively short period of time. So does Mr. Swick simplify what are all too often two very frustrating aspects of beginning German grammar. The following sections on verbs etc. are handled in a similarly efficient manner.
That said, this book does leave one thing to be desired. There is a low ratio of exercises to material. He gives lots of material, but (in my opinion) not enough exercises to master it. Therefore, I would strongly recommend buying a workbook, such as Schaum's Outline of German Grammar, and using it to reinforce the lessons of Mr. Swick's book. When it comes time to hone your German to a fine edge, check out another book by Mr. Swick; it is part of the 'Practice Makes Perfect' series and it is called 'German Pronouns and Prepositions'. It is quite affordable and it has loads of material, both instructive and practical. Thanks for your time and attention to this review and
Viel Spaß!
Excellent Introduction.......2007-07-22
I chose the Everything series as my entry point to the German language over other options, including the Dummies series, largely on the advice of reviews, and I was not disappointed. Beyond the high-school textbook quality illustrations on the cover and the two-tone black and green print (which I personally find attractive), you will find a well-organized text designed to bring the reader from essentially nothing to a basic understanding of the workings of the German language.
It is important to note that my experience with this text has been colored by the fact that I have studied other languages before, and so knowing the basic ways and terminology of language study made me slightly more than a beginner when I picked up the book, although I had no prior experience with the formal study of German.
If you have studied languages and are familiar with noun cases and verb tenses and such, you may find the ordering of chapters illogical at first, since they skip from one area of language to another, rather than focusing exclusively on nouns until they are covered and only then moving to verbs, as other language texts may do. However, I found when reading from cover to cover, the order of the chapters helped to break things up a bit, so as not to overwhelm the beginning student, although some (such as those on time and numbers) are modular enough to skip ahead to if need be. Also, the introductory section does its job well enough, with an overview of German pronunciation, which is helpful, although no substitute for hearing the language pronounced by native speakers--for this I recommend audio CD's, unless you are fortunate enough to have access to German speakers. A few notes about the pronunciation guide: The author uses a home-grown, and I think sometimes inconsistent, method of phonetic transcription which is designed to be intuitive for a native English speaker. Also, phonetic spellings of words (placed in parentheses) cease after the first few chapters.
One thing I especially appreciate about the book is the author's friendly, encouraging tone. Swick has a way of disarming the language so that it does not seem too scary, and his writing projects a confidence that a beginning student should appreciate. The credentials on the back cover indicate the author knows what he's talking about, and his explanations of the language show it, including sections on English grammar which precede explanations of their German equivalents.
The vocabulary the book offers, including a decent German-English/English-German dictionary in the back, seem adequate for a beginning student, and the exercises at the end of each chapter are good, although I recommend buying a dedicated workbook, since you will not get near the practice you need with the few exercises this book offers.
Despite a handful of sections on ordering at restaurants and the like, this is not a book of quick travel phrases. It is an introductory German grammar, which is effective for those who want to get a handle on how the language works and who want to begin a process of study to arrive at greater fluency.
Overall, I found this an excellent introduction to German language study. I personally found it useful to augment this book with a good dictionary, such as the Collins German Unabridged Dictionary 5th Edition (Harpercollins Unabridged Dictionaries), and a good intermediate/advanced grammar, such as Hammer's German Grammar and Usage.

My students loved it.......2007-07-01
I was a little aprehensive at first reading this book to 4th graders, but they absolutely loved it! Before we opened the book, we talked about what genre it might be. We reviewed this prediction after reading a couple chapters. We talked about Fantasy and the elements. I think kids are pretty smart and know that this is not something they should make and give to someone else. We didn't have any problems.
They loved drawing pictures of each step and then summarizing it with a friend. This book allows for great visualizations and even some connections. Kids love mixing things together.
I definitely recommend this book to children 9 years and older. It is really not for lower elementary if you want them to really understand the book.
George's Marvelous Medicine .......2007-06-15

George's Marvelous Medicine.......2006-11-16
I read the book George's Marvelous Medicine. The book is about a kid named George and he has a grumpy old grandma so he decides to make her a new medicine. So he got a big stew pot to make his grandma a new medicine. He goes around the house to get ingredients anything he could find to put in the pot. He takes the pot back to the kitchen to boil the things. After she had some of it seemed like she was going to blow up. She just kept growing from the medicine and finally her head went through the roof. It looks like the kick of the medicine made her nicer instead of grouchy.
So after I read the book it was awesome. I recommend this book to anyone parents or kids. I think it was one of the best books I ever read.

If you love Roald Dahl, this audio CD revision is a must. Richard E. Grant brings George, his grandma, and his parents along with the animals to life in true storyteller tradition. The voices make you want to sit back and enjoy the story in all it's glory.
