    Book Description

Behavior genetics, the study of how genes regulate developmental changes in behavior, draws together experimental research in molecular and quantitative genetics, neurobiology, and developmental psychology. This new volume includes contributions from leading experts who bring readers the
benefit of their experience in many diverse areas by examining current theory and methods and by suggesting directions for future research. The book takes a unique interdisciplinary approach, focusing on the integration of development into the study of behavior, the role of genes in the construction
of the nervous system, and the role of natural selection in shaping developing behaviors. Many chapters deal directly with methodological and quantitative issues, providing detailed study of the interactive roles of genes, environment, and development, and placing them within the context of current
    evolutionary thinking.

John Jacobs, one of golf's most respected teachers, has either played against, talked with, or given a tip to just about every significant player in the last half of the 20th century. Combining his personal experience with an enormous knowledge of the game, he's assembled 50 important lessons--some general, some quite specific--offered alphabetically from (#1) how Seve Ballesteros relies on imagination in his shot-making to (#50) how Tiger Woods sets his eyes over the ball when putting. Jacobs addresses all parts of the game by using the mechanics and mental preparation of 34 pros--from old-timers like Henry Cotton and Harry Vardon to today's bright lights of the fairways. This is no mere tutorial, though. Through bios and photos of each player and lots of Jacobs's personal anecdotes, 50 Greatest Golf Lessons teaches the history and evolution of the golf swing with relevance to today. Better yet, for golfers who want to improve their games--and is there a golfer among us who doesn't?--Jacobs's complete analyses of each lesson come with important suggestions for how to take the lessons with you from the page right out to the golf course. --Jeff Silverman

      Book Description

John Jacobs is one of the most respected golf teachers the game has ever known. Perhaps no one is better qualified than Jacobs to teach the greatest golf lessons of the 20th century because he has taught the greatest golfers of the 20th century. His reputation as an authority on the golf swing, with a sharp eye for detail and an uncanny talent for fixing faults, has made him a magnet for aspiring young stars as well as experienced champions. He is unique in having taught, studied, or played against (and often beaten) virtually every great golfer of the last 60 years.

50 Greatest Gold Lessons of the Centuryis a remarkable collection of personal anecdotes, expert swing analysis, and fascinating insights into what makes a champion and how these great players play the game. Jacobs reveals the lessons he has given to the golfing greats, recounts many of the great shots he has witnessed in tournament play, and highlights the secrets to their successful swings.

The lessons come from a veritable Who's Who of golf, from legends such as Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer, to the stars of today's PGA TOUR, such as Tiger Woods, Mark O'Meara, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, and Ernie Els.

Each lesson is complemented by specially commissioned artwork, as well as full-color action shots of today's players-plus rare, vintage photography that brings to life some of the greatest players of all time.

I thought this book was informative, but not as good as I thought
it would be. I don't believe the author presented the lessons as
he intended the readers to grasp them.

5 out of 5 stars Private Lessons with Greatest Coach with Top 50 Players.......2001-02-21

Butch Harmon, Tiger Wood's coach, called Jacobs the best teacher the game has had. Valid because most of the greats at one time or another has went to this man for help.

He's got an approach to the game which is unique, trys to keep it simple, yet unique to each individual.

Here in this wonderful book at the millenium, he takes 50 of the game's best, from Hogan to Nicklaus, Jones, Palmer, Faldo, Sned, Walter Hagen, Olazabal, Norman, Byron Nelson, Watson, Trevino, Palmer and more, and shows us what each one of them exhibits about the game that we can learn from.

The one for me that gives remarkable results is Hale Irwin, who spent two whole weeks doing nothing but hitting balls with his feet together: this gets the hands and arms swinging freely.

A collector's item, with magnificent photos, art work, and wonderful commentary by this master teacher.

Get this book, it will give you enjoyment and hints for improving your swing.

5 out of 5 stars My All-Time Favorite Golf Instruction Book.......2000-10-01

I have read and own a huge library of golf instruciton books in my life-long quest to improve my golf game. Many are filled with conflicting and confusing information. John Jacob's book is by far the best golf instruction book I have ever read. I poured over this book for hours, underlining profound information, anxious to get to the practice tee to try out his suggestions. I knew immediatley that I was reading a book written by a master teacher who profoundly understood the golf swing and was able to communicate that understanding in clear and simple language. I went out and bought a copy for a golfing friend the next day.

4 out of 5 stars Easy Word Finder.......2007-08-23

I am a budding writer. As part of my research for developing a freelance commercial writer practice, I read "The Well Fed Writer" by Peter Bowerman. In his discussion of writer tools, Bowerman recommended "Rodale's Synonym Finder" above all others.

Thesauri are a basic tool for writers. Most good writers have a command of the language. What's needed is a quick reference that gives alternative choices to words they have in mind. For examples, if they used a term earlier in a paragraph and wish to avoid repeated use of the same word, Rodale's alphabetical organization is preferable to the organization by subject found in the better-known Roget's Thesaurus.

Roget's will always be the gold standard of thesauri, but when time is of the essence, Rodale is the ticket.

5 out of 5 stars Quirky, Useful, Fun, Educational, Expanding.......2006-09-20

Quality, sparingly-used adjectives aren't the bane of good writing and vivid word paintings - ADVERBS are. I find this book invaluable in searching for the unusual, lyrical, 'dead-on' adjective to fit a particular scene or mood. I prefer it to a thesaurus because of its ease of use, smaller size, and 'quirkier' approach.

Yes, there are a lot of words that a reader would not be familiar with. But so what? Sometimes a word is perfect anyway, because of the image its sound invokes, the meaning made clear by the context. You are more likely to be tripped up by the 'uh oh, this writer is using a thesaurus' approach in using a thesaurus than this book.

Besides, thumbing through it is incredible fun, as well as opening one's eyes to potential new vistas.

It doesn't replace a thesaurus, but it's a more-than-worthy companion (I use it more often, by 2-3 times), and is seldom more than arm's length at my desk.

      3 out of 5 stars A Book For Rule-Benders.......2005-09-20

Who hasn't heard the belabored rule: Use Adjectives Sparingly.

This book is for those brave souls who resist the great English Teacher in the Sky and bend, maybe even break, the rules.

Almost entirely adjectives, the book provides a quick fix for that stubborn word-on-the-edge-of-your-tounge condition which so frequently afflicts aspiring writers.

Also, included at the end of the book is a Quick Word Finder:

      1. Colors (who knew there where so many distinct shades of yellow-chrome yellow, butter, golden, blonde, ash blond, and linen to name a few).

      2. Smells (putrid, rancid, stinky, stuffy, sweet, etc).

      3. Sounds (bloop, blop, achoo, badow, bang, bzzzz, boyng, bradada to name a few of my favorites).

      4. List of Prepositions (and, but, to, across, an, concerning, etc).

      5. List of Interjections: (ah, boy, bravo, cheerio, aw, shucks, chop-chop, etc, etc).

Therefore, while not nevery writer needs this reference book, many can benefit from its easy-to-read format, lists and suggestions.

My suggestion: Don't pass this one up.

      4 out of 5 stars Awesome, but..........2005-01-01

I agree with the previous reviewers... this is an excellent alternative to a thesaurus. The lists of synonyms each have a definition, so that you can find exactly the right connotation for your taste. I can't count how many times I've looked up an idea in a thesaurus and all of the synonyms I found had exactly the same connotations (red, crimson, scarlet; instead of, say, bloody).

I do have one MAJOR complaint, though - there is no key to this book! There is no Table of Contents or Index appendix.

Sure, the ideas are categorized, but you have to scan through the entire book, page by page, hoping to run across the category you want. It's a HUGE problem unless you've got all of the categories memorized. Sample categories from pages 272-273: Observance, Obstruction, Occupation, Occurance, Ocean. I don't know about you, but those terms don't automatically spring to mind when I'm looking for a word.

Then you get to the "Quick Word Finder" appendix - pages 411-457 - and there are an entirely NEW set of alphebetized categories. You may have to check in both places.

I still think it's an awesome book... but please, please, please, I beg you, authors - add a key in the next edition! Please!

5 out of 5 stars Over five hundred entries.......2003-08-08

Roget's Descriptive Word Finder blends a dictionary and thesaurus devoted exclusively to adjectives, offering thousands of descriptions for people, places and things and presenting a theme organization which brings related words together. There are over five hundred entries which are designed to appeal both as quick references and as browsing material.

4 out of 5 stars Finding the right adjective.......2003-07-20

I am quite sure that almost anyone, who has ever taken an English course in high school or college, had to purchase at least one copy of Rogetýs Thesaurus.

I never knew, until recently, the derivation of the term ýthesaurus.ý Apparently the term had been derived from the post-medieval version of Latin, and it basically means treasure or a storehouse. We immediately associate the term thesaurus with Roget, whose full name was Peter Mark Roget. This brilliant individual was a medical doctor, philologist, scientist and lexicographer, and the first to create a thesaurus of English Words and Phrases.

Quite interesting, the first Thesaurus Dr. Roger had drawn up was in 1805 for his own personal use. Only after 47 years when he was 73 did he reveal this gem that to many individuals is the most important book ever written along with the Bible and Websterýs dictionary. Dr. Barbara Ann Kipfer, author of more than twenty- five books, and who holds a Ph.D. in archaeology, a M.S. in linguistics, a B.S. in physical education, and is currently working on a Ph.D. in Buddhist studies, has put together a book containing thousands of words for describing people, places and things with adjectives. As mentioned in the introduction to her book entitled, Rogetýs Descriptive Word Finder-A Dictionary/Thesaurus of Adjectives ýit is a combination dictionary and thesaurus exclusively for adjectives and adverbs.ý

The presentation is in the form of a detailed thematic scheme, providing a comprehensive reference on adjectives and adverbs for writers. As compared to a dictionary that places relating words apart in their alphabetical scheme of things, the human mind puts them together in categories. This book mirrors, to some extent, the human mind, in that it contains 572 easily understood categories.

This book will invariably prove to be a godsend when you are at a loss for the right word that accurately describes something, someone or some place. As a thematic dictionary, the book focuses on adjectives and adverbs that aid the writer in vividly painting a more accurate picture of what he or she is trying to convey.

As an example, suppose you wish to describe a room as being dark, however, you realize that ýdarký is not the most evocative word. You certainly do not want to resort to clichés, and thus you look up the term ýdarknessý in Dr. Kipferýs descriptive word finder. You will notice you have a choice of forty- four different terms. Perhaps, the room is gloomy, lightless, obscure, or you want to use the phrase ýshrouded in darkness.ý

Although this word finder should not be considered as a replacement for Rogetýs Thesaurus, it nevertheless deserves a place on a writerýs bookshelf as another invaluable reference tool.

A good antonym "finder" or "dictionary" is very hard to come by. This is the exception. And it doesn't just offer one obscure antonym for each word in the "dictionary" that barely seems to meet the definition. In many cases it offers several. For example, for quotation/quote, it offers four: paraphrase, recapitulation, restatement, summary.

I think this little book is the best of its kind.

Those who study English literature or are involved in translations need to widen their terminology and constantly improve their linguistics. I personally achieved this with numerous dictionaries and one of them was certainly the 21st Century Synonym and Antonym Finder. With its concise and accurate definitions one easily finds the perfect term and also keeps it in mind - and that is also of great importance. With finishing my studies of foreign languages and their literatures, I have been mostly involved in translations and thus been forced to rummage considerably through books and dictionaries - believe me you will find this book indispesanble once you have it.
