In the early hours of September 5, 1972, members of the ultraviolent Palestinian terrorist faction Black September scaled the perimeter fence surrounding the Olympic Village in Munich. Their target was the temporary home of the Israeli Olympic team. Within 24 hours, 11 Israelis, five terrorists, and a German policeman were dead.
Based largely on exhaustive investigation for the Oscar-winning documentary, One Day in September is the definitive account of the tragedy. Simon Reeve has gathered extraordinary information from a number of sources, including recently released Stasi files and interviews with key figures, including the families of the hostages, politicians, policemen, advisors, fellow athletes, media figures, and even the lone surviving member of the group that carried out the attack. Reeve's control over his material is admirable. He vividly paints images of the individuals involved, humanizing a narrative that cracks and buzzes with the compact tension of those 24 hours. At the same time, he provides the background to the attack, filling in vital historical context from the distant and recent past, such as the Arab-Jewish dispute that produced this and other terrorist actions and their responses.
Reeve conveys the public horror of Jews being incarcerated on German soil, which led the German authorities to make crucial judgments, with tragic results. Fatal errors were made that can only be fully understood through the underlying dynamics of not only Middle East history, but also postwar European politics, individual and institutional arrogance, inexperience, and political pressure--including from the International Olympic Committee. Reeve follows up the events of that day by exposing the full extent of the Israeli revenge mission, which over the next 20 years hunted down and killed those responsible for the attack. He has not only written a compelling book, but provided a considerable service in allowing readers to understand the forces of hatred and history that conspired toward inevitable, but no less tragic human consequences.
Those who were a part of the huge live media audience that watched helplessly as events unfolded will undoubtedly experience again the sense of dread at recalling those traumatized, shackled figures led out from the Olympic Village to their fate on a German airfield. Those who make the mistake of thinking the dark days of international terrorism are history will read One Day in September and remember that the same underlying tensions still cast shadows over our present and our future. --Fiona Buckland, Amazon.co.uk

Olympia is a Sacred Place.......2007-03-21
First let me say that this is a well written book that kept me engaged throughout. Although the author indulged in a bit too much moralizing for my taste, he still manages to deliver a highly detailed and informative account of the Munich massacre and it's aftermath. He does a good job at weaving the lives and personalities of the victims-as well as the perpetrators-with a blow by blow narrative of both the massacre and the Israeli retaliation.
Many of the Israelis had serious reservations about coming back to the country where so many of their people-including immediate family members for some-were killed. Despite this, they came to Munich enthusiastic to compete and represent their country. Ironically, their fears turned out to be legitimate, only not for the reason they suspected. The fact that Jews were being killed in Germany yet again was not the only tragic irony of the Munich Olympics massacre. There was also the fact that the German officials had purposely scaled back security at the events precisely because of the nation's history. They were desperately trying to redeem their nation's reputation and they were afraid that excessive security would evoke painful memories of the Third Reich. This decision had devastating consequences. Reeve pulls no punches in his criticism of the Germans. By most accounts-and Reeve is sure to emphasize the point-the rescue attempt that resulted in the death of all of the athletes was completely botched by the Germans. They come off as looking completely incompetent and Reeve does not shy away from pointing this out.
Reeve then goes on to Israel's retaliation which was code-named, the "Wrath of God" operation. This is where the Israelis hunted down and assasinated dozens of people who were thought to be involved in the Munich attack. Anyone who has seen Stephen Spielberg's film 'Munich' will recognize the names and locations of these asassinations. As I stated previously, Reeve tends to over-moralize the issue by constantly sticking his two cents in about the massacre itself, Israel's response, and terorism in general. It's not that I necessarily disagree with him, but I just don't feel the need to be preached to about right and wrong. Other than that, it is well worth the read.
The death of the 1972 Munich Olympics........2006-08-15
This is an exceptional read on the killing of Israeli athletes in the 1972 Munich Olympics. These were defenseless individuals, not even properly guarded by the German authorities. The Palestinian Fatah movement commissioned Black September to take as many of the team hostage so they could force the release of over two hundred other hardened killers. The Israeli authorities would not do this. Therefore the Germans came up with a ridiculously simple plan to free the nine Israeli athletes and kill the hostage takers. They made so many simple mistakes, that even some policemen refused to take part in it. When the Palestinians and hostages arrived at the airport, an hour long shoot out resulted with five Palestinians killed and all nine athletes killed. This really destroyed the innocence of the Olympic Games and showed really what the Palestian Fatah were really all about.
The book also covers the revenge killings by Israel. The author disagrees that these have a beneficial effect on the outcome of the battle. I disagree. These revenge killings show that the hunter can become the hunted. It puts the fear into those that cause devastation throughout the world. Other than that, I think this is a fine read.
View From the Left.......2006-01-08
What a surprise, another hand wringing liberal condemnation of Israel's defense and foreign policy. Reeve's account is a detailed look at the events in Munich, and a somewhat less detailed look at subsequent events. To call it non-fiction is a stretch, as there are many holes to plug, and Reeve chooses to plug them with an ill-disquised comfort for chatting with terrorists, and sharing his clearly Eurocentric liberal view of the mideast.
He takes one short swipe at the notion that he is equating the Israeli response with the initial murders of the Jewish athletes, but spends the entire rest of his effort doing just that. His ultimate editorial view seems to be that -- even after the murders of two athletes in cold blood in the Olympic village -- if the Germans hadn't so profoundly botched their "rescue" attempt, everyone else would be alive today. I came away with the distinct impression that he has more contempt for the German effort and the Olympic Committees than with the terrorists themselves.
All in all, worth the read, but we could have done without learning Reeve's political viewpoints, and his Miss America dreams for "world peace."
"Debunk "Munich" with this book.......2005-12-31
AS you probably know, the elitists in hollywood would like you to sympathize with terrorists so we can understand them and coddle them with empathy. The new Spielberg film "Munich" further distorts the truth about the Mossad's "Wrath of God" operation and clearly distorts the real truth about what happened. Read this book so you can know the truth about what happened that day in 1972. Arm yourself with the truth so you know what muslim violence is all about. Spielberg is now a modern dhimwit. dhim·wit (dmwt) - A non-Muslim member of a free society that abets the stated cause of Islamic domination with remarkable gullibility or guile. A dhimwit is always quick to extend a sympathy to the enemy that they are unwilling to allow their own defenders.
Compelling.......2005-12-05
"One Day In September" is the definitive book account of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, it chronicles one of the most famous terrorist attacks in history and exposes the errors that caused the standoff to end so trafically and opens a window into the Middle East conflict, showing factors and events that are very relevant today in the post-September 11 world. Simon Reeve's book is extremely well-detailed and compelling, describing with clarity what happened and it also takes the time to tell the human stories behind the tragedy, we meet the wives and children of both the Israeli victims and the Palestinian terrorists and learn about how this event has affected them, disturbed their sleep and shattered their sense of security. Reeve also does an excellent job going into the history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, investigating ancient history to trace the roots of an ancient land and its troubles. We live in a dangerous world and "One Day In September" should be read by anyone who wants to be informed on the roots of modern Middle Eastern terrorism and just what kind of foes we are facing in these tense times. It is a book about what terrorism IS, how it is a very real threat and how it is spearheaded by men who live for a cause and don't care about dying or killing innocent civilians to gain recognition. The story of the Munich attack is fascinating, but even more interesting is the Israeli revenge operation known as Operation Wrath Of God which involved a team of Israeli assassins sent around the world to hunt down all those involved in the Munich massacre and basically destroy them. One might find it disturbing that a democratic state would condone assassination squads, but look at what Israel was facing and you realize Golda Meir and her commanders were trying to defend their people, when you are persecuted around the world and wanted dead by who knows how many hostile governments just because you exist, what can you do? Reeve writes in detail about the operations, how the targets were killed and goes into the obsession to kill Hassan Salameh, Yasser Arafat's right hand man also known as "The Red Prince." "One Day In September" is also an eloquent call for peace, families and officials call for a halt in the violence because they have felt and seen it, it is a book that calls for peace and resolution, but also realizes that in a world where men choose to kill the innocent for downright religious causes, sometimes violence is inevitable, even in self defense.

Product Description
He came to rule the Empire after his father. He came at the time of unrest. A religion, which his Empire did not share, was crawling its way to the world dominance. Jews in the Middle East struggled to keep the followers of this religion at bay for years. Coincidentally, a terrorist act, like the world had never seen before, happened in the largest city of the Empire. The followers of the same religion were blamed for it, and he had to see them hunted down...
No, this is not what you think. Actually, it has nothing to do with George W. Bush, Islam, and America.
The year is AD 64. The place is Rome of the Emperor Nero. The religion is Christianity.
* * *
A secret agent of the Roman Empire is dispatched to Egypt to check the evidence that a new religious sect will try to burn Rome on the third day of September Ides. It does not matter that the evidence was never there. The agent Nil Nihil Septimus (literally nothing nothing the seventh hey, he was the seventh child in a poor family) is on the case. The way to Egypt was long in ancient times. He saw many places and people. And the places and people saw Nil and his story of the third day of September Ides.
Slowly, step by step, the myth, the fake, the empty story born from the small talk between the emperor and the prefect of praetorian guards became material, fed on the desires, will, and power of the people across the Roman world, and became a destiny.
Beware of the Ides of September.

Almost completely ignores the question of how society ought to deal with felons.......2007-07-27
I'm not impressed with Rubner's analysis of Israel's response to the 1972 Munich massacre. Here's why.
First, Rubner explains to us that "acts of terror do not occur in a political vacuum." And he goes on to imply that the Munich massacre "helped to persuade the world that" the struggle against Israel needed "to be taken seriously." And he reminds us that there is a "temptation" to respond to violence, impelled by the "psychological need to seek vengeance and by a determination to prevent and deter future recurrence of terrorism."
Well, yes, violence does not always take place in a political vacuum. But isn't it possible that human rights (including human rights for Israelis) need to be "taken seriously" as well? And while plenty of people may want revenge, some certainly do not. In addition, while most folks hope to prevent or deter felonies, including terrorism, that's no reason to hint that counterterrorism is misguided, stupid, counterproductive, or immoral. I think Rubner ought to have made it a little more clear that appeasement of such violence is likely to be counterproductive all by itself. And I think he overlooked a big opportunity to discuss the things that nations other than Israel could have (and should have) done to fight anti-Israeli terror. It was this sort of failure that probably caused Israel to decide to take some action on its own.
Rubner seems to have a rather arbitrary way of looking at things. If society winks at murder, we need to expect vigilante action, and we also need to expect that society will either change or be overwhelmed by crime. Discussing the merits and demerits of the vigilante action seems to be secondary. And criticizing the vigilantes for opposing the murderers of innocent civilians seems not merely misguided but irrelevant to the problem. So, in my opinion, when Rubner starts discussing the question of whether killing terrorists in response to terrorist actions simply produces more violence, he's not merely wrong but off topic. The proper question is how society (not just some victims and their representatives) ought to deal with felons.
I think this article has little to recommend it.

Great Book.......2007-09-10
This book has helped me understand babies and become more of a father figure. I recomend this to anyone who is to soon become a father.
Must read for expecting dads.......2006-11-05
This book targets guys and their way of thinking really well as it gets to the point and includes a lot of practical pointers for everything from pregnancy to all the changes that occur after the baby is born. My husband has volunteered information he has learned from this book and is reading it of his own volition.
Informative and helpful for first time dads.......2006-05-08
My partner is a savvy, well informed kind of guy. I had some fear that he would think this book was lame or at least unhelpful when I gave it to him when we were a couple months pregnant. He read the book and sang its praises for the practical ideas and advice it gave for dads to help mom in pregnancy and things to do with the baby when he/she arrives. It's not just pregnancy or baby focused, but includes ideas and activities for dad throughout baby and childhood.
accessible guide to responsible fatherhood.......2004-11-21
The author is a father of two sons and a child-center volunteer, but this book is not just one random guy's ruminations on how to be a better father. The author is also an experienced book editor, and he uses those skills to blend the experiences of nearly 50 other fathers of various backgrounds as he compiles this almanac of observations and seasoned advice.
The style is matter-of-fact yet sympathetic; pragmatic, down-to-earth, and engaging. The content is fair and balanced, offering varying points of view on many details of child-rearing, and does not preach. And while fairly nuanced in this way, on the other hand, it's not wishy-washy and "anything goes" about things -- it's also crisply authoritative in areas where there is just one no-nonsense way to go. E.g., the dangers of older cribs and the maximum recommended gaps between slats, or other safety issues not really open to much experimentation.
Overall though, the book is refreshingly descriptive rather than prescriptive. It's a nice mix of specific, often creative suggestions along with a general philosophy of caring, healthy, and personally appropriate/satisfying fatherhood.
The Almanac will make an excellent gift for fathers of newborns or young children -- up to approximately kindergarten, I'd say, although some of the material is appropriate for even slightly older children too.
Note: although even the more recent edition feels slightly dated simply because the pictures are old, the material itself is all still relevant as far as I could tell.
ONLY THE BEST ON THE MARKET.......2000-08-27
I raised my daughter by this book, and then gave it away to a young father who has raised his son on it. I am an Infant/Toddler teacher and am familiar with very very many many books for parents ... and as far as I am concerned this is only the best book of its kind on the market for fathers.

Book Description
Co A, 73rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. One of the most detailed reviews of America's Civil War in it's western field. A painful, shocking expose of the disastrous treatment of America's disabled Civil War veterans...little known even in those years...completely unremembered in our day. Hour by hour...heroism and brilliant strategy in the most hard hitting, combative, small scale raid of America's Civil War. Rank and file riflemen... friends and neighbors from one Indiana county...living, fighting, dying in America's bloodiest of all wars. "The Boys From Lake County" is likely one-of-kind in America's Civil War history...at least in the last hundred years. The book names all of the 100 men who originally enlisted in Co A, 73rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It details their age at enlistment, their height, complexion, color of hair, color of eyes, where they were born, where they resided in Lake County, civilian occupation, and what happened to them during the War. For a few it reveals some details of their lives after the War. For one, the book lists a great many events during his entire lifetime. As a matter of course, "The Boys From Lake County" is also a relatively complete history of their 73rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
