Book Description
"Wallace Kaufman is a splendid storyteller and a thoughtful social critic-wise, honest, and consistently funny." -Robert Finch
"An absorbing, unflinching, and surprisingly comic account of how one man-a devoted father-withdrew from the world and gradually returned. It's as wise and instructive as it is compelling."-Reynolds Price
In 1974 Wallace Kaufman, following the romantic vision of a simpler life in harmony with nature he first glimpsed in Thoreau's Walden, moved on to his own land by a small stream in the North Carolina woods. Now, twenty-five years later, he emerges to tell a tale somewhat different from Thoreau's-an entertaining, moving, and distinctly late-twentieth-century story of a life lived in the wild as landowner, environmentally conscious developer, builder, farmer, conservationist, wilderness steward. His love of nature and his commitment to preserving it never waver, even as he tells his sometimes hilarious, sometimes catastrophic stories of how to live with nature even when nature isn't too keen on living with you.

In the late 1960s, swept up in the spirit of the times, young literary scholar Wallace Kaufman banded with friends to purchase 330 acres of North Carolina forest and found their version of utopia--a low-impact, covenant-heavy development that their rural neighbors would come to call "Hippie Town." Kaufman's utopia fell apart, as such places tend to do, under the usual pressures, but he stayed in the woods, eventually losing his academic job but finding plenty of other work to do as a sometime builder and land appraiser. His tales of how to go about making a home in the backcountry may give would-be back-to-the-landers pause, but they're certainly instructive and full of useful details. (Who knew that "the average small house requires over 50,000 nails," or that a builder hammering by hand would need to devote nearly two weeks to driving those nails in?) Kaufman is a keen observer of the ways of nature, discussing the natural history of trees, the habits of flying squirrels and copperheads, and the relentless cycle of life and death. An evident conservationist, he also finds room for extractive activities such as logging, mining, and hunting, and he argues for individual ownership of the land, maintaining that "the world's greatest environmental tragedies are largely on public lands or lands to which no one has a secure title or protection for a claim."
At times Kaufman falls into cantankerousness, grumbling at urban environmentalists who, he holds, unduly romanticize life in the wilds--"No one," he writes, "lives happily ever after alone in a wild place"--and taking potshots at the likes of Henry David Thoreau, who lived in his famed woodland cabin for only a fraction of the time that Kaufman lived in his. These ill-tempered lapses, which read like afterthoughts meant to attract controversy, don't detract too badly from the rest of Kaufman's generally easygoing memoir, which, all in all, is a worthy addition to the library devoted to country life. --Gregory McNamee

COMPLEXITY AND BEAUTY.......2000-11-24
Here is a writer who conveys the complexity and beauty of nature without putting on rose colored glasses. Coming Out of the Woods inspires, entertains, informs and tells a page-turner story that reveals how all human interaction with nature demands tradeoffs. Think of it as an update of Thoreau's Walden, but with a strong story line and conclusions appropriate for our time. I recommend it highly for introductory environmental studies courses, American literature courses, or courses on literature and the environment.

Dangerous Book.......2000-10-20
Wallace Kaufman doesn't know what he is talking about. And it's dangerous. He talks and talks and people believe. He says things ("facts") that aren't true. In his book, he doesn't do his research, jumps to conclusions, and sends a boulder crashing through his neighbor's roof. In a similar way, he comes to conclusions about the environment, woodworking, recycling, &c. It's dangerous.
Our local paper (like Kaufman I'm from Pittsboro, NC) printed a letter to the editor from a woman who had read Kaufman's new book, and believed it. Now she is sure recycling is bad for the environment and that the rain forests aren't disappearing.
Here are some "facts" that aren't true, that I know enough to correct. I'm also going to give the sources of my information (unlike Kaufman).
When talking about a neighbor's new porch (p. 127) he says, "'Those red oak boards will rot,' I warned him...Three years later, the boards had turned black and mushrooms began to grow out of them." He goes on to say of red oak boards that you have "to drench them with preservatives" to make them last. Now it is true that milled red oak will rot, but people make riven shingles out of red oak and they last for 30+ years without preservatives. Roy Underhill, in THE WOODWRIGHT'S COMPANION, p.154 says, "Since the splitting follows the grain of the oak from end to end, the exposed surface is made up of tiny tubes torn open down their whole length... Many folks like to shave shingles to a taper and a smooth surface. If you were to do this on a riven red-oak shingle, you would cut into the pores of the wood, open the grain, and allow it to become saturated with water, and it would rot in no time. Sawn shingles are just as bad or worse."
Kaufman also talks about owl pellets (see p.148), "An owl pellet (in common language we have to call it a turd)..." An owl pellet is a bundle of hair, bones, &c. that an owl regurgitates after it's meal. However, my dictionary's definition of 'turd' is, "a piece of dung." 'Dung' led me to 'excrement', the definition being, "waste matter from the bowels."
On p. 125 he says, "The house had endured because builders had selected the very best yellow pine and white oak. They had used only slow growth heartwood that is heavy with crowded annual growth rings." Back to Roy Underhill's book, THE WOODWRIGHT'S COMPANION, p16. "In pine timber slow growth and tight rings make tough, dense, strong wood, just as you might expect. In oaks, however, the effect is just the opposite. Slow growth in oak makes for weaker, more porous wood of a lower density. The reason for this is that every spring an oak has to put out a new set of leaves before the next tree or it's out of business. To get this mass of vegetation out, massive amounts of water must be run up through new plumbing that forms in the wood each spring. These large vessels form a band of constant width in every growth ring, followed by the denser, stronger wood formed during the summer growing season. The slower an oak tree grows, the closer together these bands of weaker spring wood will be. A slow grown red oak can become so porous that it appears to be 90 percent nothing."
These are just things I, a 16 year old, knew enough to find fault with. It would be interesting to see what someone knowledgeable about the environment or the Native Americans would find is incorrect in Kaufman's book.
20 x Thoreau = Surprises.......2000-09-07
Kaufman spends twenty years doing what all of us nature lovers think we could do-Live alone in the woods for a lifetime. Well Kaufman isn't always alone and 20 years may not be a lifetime but it is a signifcant commitment to "the simple Life." And the revelations Kaufman comes back with are not exactly what one might expect. Like modern advancements and capitalism is good for nature? Not totally, but similar to Bill Bryson's observations in his big hit A Walk in the Woods, the reality of modern enviromentalist's ideals is not always what it is cracked up to be. And I think 240 months(20 times longer than Thoreau) in the woods qualifies Kaufman as much as any body to say so. Though he lacks Bryson's swift narrative and comical anecdotes, what we gain from Kaufman is an update from Walden Pond that we might be surprised to read. The book will also help quell any idyllic thoughts you might have about dropping out of society to pursue a life in the woods. Because after finishing this book you may find that Kaufman's experience was enough.
Beyond Thoreau.......2000-06-06
I have to admit that I approached this book with some hesitation. I did not want to read yet another polemic on the good, the bad, and the ugly in environmental politics. And much to my relief and pleasure, this book does not go in that direction. Instead, it is a compelling narrative of one man's effort to reach an accord with the dynamic and changing forest in which he has been living for over thirty years. In the process, Kaufman tests his and his friends idealized and often romanticized notions of Nature against the realities of road building, flying squirrels, and devastating hurricanes. Kaufman uses Thoreau as his touchstone, but takes the latter's two-year experiment and expands it into a life's study. As he digs the foundation of his house, he discovers the pre-history of the Morgan Branch forest; and as his lives in his completed house, he begins to understand the often harsh ecology of the place. His great past time is hunting for edible mushrooms, often in the company of his daughter. These hunts provide a paradigm for the entire book in which the ability to discern fine details makes for enjoyable eating or, in this case, reading.
Book Description
Put science to work for you in the pool to swim stronger and faster than ever! Swimming Fastest is a fully revised and updated version of Swimming Faster, widely considered by coaches and swimmers as one of the best books ever written on competitive swimming. Author Ernest Maglischo reveals the science behind the training methods that led his teams to 13 NCAA Division II national championships.
Swimming Fastest is the definitive reference on stroke technique and training methods. In addition to explaining what swimmers should do, Maglishco explains why techniques and training are to be executed a certain way.
A primary feature in the book is a thorough and insightful technique analyses of the four primary strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Accompanying the text are more than 500 photographs and illustrations, including photos of world-class swimmers demonstrating picture-perfect form. Supporting the technical instruction is a complete explanation of the physiological basis for the most effective training methods, including detailed sample workouts and training programs for each event.
Swimming Fastest will benefit every serious swimmer and swimming coach. Gain new knowledge, refine technique, maximize training, and trim precious seconds off previous record times.
Customer Reviews:
All I ever needed to know about swimming.......2007-01-08
My background is that I'm a former NCAA Championship competitor, nearly 30 years of age group and high school coaching; an MS in exercise physiology with specific research into blood chemistry and nutrition.
I used Dr. Maglischo's book as a guide for specific areas of my MS work.
Dr. Maglischo's book is an exceptional compilation. His analysis of stroke mechanics appropriately offers no absolutes regarding the perfect stroke as, at this time, no absolutes exist. Regardless of your preference as a swimmer or coach, stroke recommendation surrounds the most important aspect of swimming which is swimmer specific drag reduction.
In my opinion, Dr. Maglischo has come full circle regarding stroke mechanics. As a previous devoutee' to the traditional "action/reaction" approach to teaching stroke Maglischo, influenced by Councilman, examined and proposed the use of Bernouli's principle (lift) as the propulsive force in swimming. Yet today, Maglischo has examined great swimmers and realizes that what is good for one swimmer, may not be best for all. Some swimmers work best with 'action/reaction' concepts while other respond better to 'lift' principles.
What else is important about this text is the succinct explanation of the physiology of exercise. Without a thorough understanding of the biochemistry involved in performance, no coach can give his/her athletes the appropriate instruction surrounding training and racing. Without a physiological background, a coach can only mimic another. Dr. Maglischo provides all coaches, for all sports, the needed background to be creative in preparing workouts and teaching competition.
Finally, with regard to teaching competitive strategies, be you swimmer or coach, Dr. Malischo recommends exceptional approaches to preparing for a race.
Swimming Faster.......2006-02-01
As a former swimming coach of elite swimmers, I consider this to be the gold standard on competitive swim training. It is the modern successor to Dr. Jim Cousilman's classic, "The Science of Swimming". This volume should be a required reference for all competitive swimmers and coaches.
Needlessly cumbersome and obscure.......2005-11-30
Not for beginners, very academic language, not how-to book
but it is so huge that you can drain out of 300 words one single clear word which will actually answer you question
Drawings are really poor ( he didn't know to draw a human figure in swimming positions! ) and don't add very much to the explanations
Some passages are very obscure ( although I should admit English is not my mother tongue ) but for example I didn't manage to get through the sentence like " the pike position should be established before the legs are leaving the jumping platform" ( about the starts )
And it has a lot of such obscure concepts.
Swimming bible.......2005-10-23
Altough I'm a duch user, the book is a perfect help for trainers.
Everything I want to know is to be found in the book. I alraedy borrowed the book from a friend, but because it is so complete, I want to have it myself.
Therefore I call it my bible.
Out of date information - I returned the book.......2005-01-22
I am a master's swimmer, been swimming most of my life. In the last two years I've been relearning swimming techniques for all of the strokes and am very interested in both theory and latest ideas. It was on a friend's recommendation I bought this tome.
I was very disappointed, and just returned the book for a refund.
The lastest research results reviewed are dated 1999 --- this is not acceptable for a book published in 2003. I don't mind that he recycled much of his old material, but to be 4 years out of date on a rapidly moving topic won't work. Again, for a supposedly state-of-the-art book published in 2003, this is far out of date.
His theory section doesn't include the mechanics of Thorpe's and Hackett's front quadrant swimming. I was expecting to see a thorough explanation of why it works. Instead, he says he doesn't think front quadrant with a long glide will work (Thorpe and Hackett indicate he's wrong here), but doesn't include any models for why it would or wouldn't.
The theory sections of the other strokes are very thin. Mostly he shows a picture of a fast swimmer and writes, "You should swim like this." But unlike freestyle, there is no substantive theory backing up why 'this' is supposed to be good.
I was most disturbed by the backstroke, since the patterns of movement he says one 'should' do seem to violate the hydro-physics principles he spent so much time on in the first chapter. Without any theoretical backing, he repeats that one should do like the fast swimmers. I came away from this chapter not understanding at all why fast backstroke swimmers swim with a stroke that has a strong downward component, which he clearly advises against in the first chapter.
There is a little nod to Thorpe and Hacket toward the very end of the book, but it looked to me almost just a gratuitous injection of modern names just before sending to print.
I'm now looking for a 2004/5 up-to-date swimming theory book.

Book Description
A plain-English guide to one of the toughest science courses around
Organic chemistry is rated among the most difficult courses that students take and is frequently the cause of washout among pre-med, medical, and nursing students. This book is an easy-to-understand and fun reference to this challenging subject. It explains the principles of organic chemistry in simple terms and includes worked-out problems to help readers get up to speed on the basics.
Customer Reviews:
Chemistry.......2007-08-24
Had been a while siince i took general chemistry and so found organic a little hard. My professor suggested buying this book it was the best $19.99 that i ever spent. Too bad there was no guide for Organic 2!
There are better supplement books..........2007-08-10
Needing a supplement to my Organic Chemistry textbook I picked this up, which was more or less a waste. It simply doesn't provide enough to better understand college level Organic Chemistry, maybe High School. It read and felt like a dumbed down bad textbook, with bad attempts at humor thrown in; maybe to dull up the reading. Don't get me wrong there are helpful parts of the book... just few and far between. After my disappointment I picked up Organic Chemistry Demystified, a definite college/grad level supplement which was very good, and the quizzes helped immensly.
Truly excellent.......2007-06-28
This book is an excellent way to begin to learn Organic Chemistry. The book covers most of what you will learn in Organic Chemistry I, and ends by covering the first few topics in Organic Chemistry II.
It expounds the material in such a way that almost any body can understand it. I personally struggle quite a bit with science, and often find textbooks (and even review books) convoluted and confusing. This book however, really lays some good foundations to begin to learn Organic Chemistry. It explains the basics in a clear, concise manner. The writing style is easy and conversational, so it is possible to read the chapters fairly quickly. I find that reading this book really saves me time in the long run. I read this book first, then I read through my textbook and attend lecture. Since I have already begun to understand the basic concepts, I can focus more on details. This really cuts down the amount of time I have to spend reading and re-reading my textbook. I develop an understanding for the material more quickly and more thoroughly than by just reading the textbook and going to lecture. It also includes lots of little tips on how to solve organic chemistry problems that also save you time in the long run.
However, make no mistake, this book is NOT intended to teach you everything you need to know in Organic Chemistry. I believe it is best used as an introduction or supplement to lay the foundations for more detailed material covered in textbooks and in lectures. In other words, this book could be the skeleton, and your textbook and lecture would be the muscles, ligaments, etc. that flesh out the skeleton. That said, I have found this book to be extremely helpful. I wish that they have an Organic Chemistry II for Dummies!
Dummy Chem.......2007-05-17
I found the book extremely helpful. I used it as a supplemental review to help me study for my Organic Chemistry Final and for the Medical College Admission Test. The book covers the foundational concepts thoroughly and in an easy to read, easy to understand, format. It is no susbstitute for a real Organic Chemistry class, but it is a close second and if you read it alongside of your textbook you'll be amazed at how much easier the class becomes. After reading it, I found that I was actually able to predict the direction of many reactions, even though I had never seen that particular reaction before. I was using the authors website, [...] All in All a great buy.
Pretty good........2007-05-06
The book is helpful, but like most in the "for dummies" series, it just doesn't present ENOUGH. I'd been out of school for a few years, and was really looking for something supplemental outside of class. This book, what there is of it, does help, but there isn't nearly enough of it. In their effort to shorten it to make it seem less of a textbook, it left me feeling rushed, and lacking something; especially at test time. More examples, problems and solutions, and descriptions would have been great.

Deep Black: Dark Zone (MP3-CD Unabridged) .......2007-02-06
I bought this to listen to in the car while I drive but have thus far not had a chance to listen to it yet. However, I did check it out to determine if the MP3 format would play in my car, as I thought CD formats and MP3 formats were interchangeable. However, the MP3 format will not play in my car's CD player, and I am greatly disappointed about this. Consequently, I cannot give an accurate rating to this product at this time.
Ending endings endings!.......2005-05-22
Knowing how to start a book is one thing, figuring out how to end it is another.
As a techno thriller it is better than some, but occaisionally an author needs to consider reality. Without putting a spoiler into this review, the ending of this book just couldn't happen and have the good guys survive.
Leave the ending aside, I thought this Deep Black installment moved away from the razzle-dazzle (which was good) and left the action to the Deep Black Agents (I wish I could feel something for the characters).
This book rolls along pretty well.
Will I read another Deep Black, probably. Will I expect a masterpiece - uh-uh.
Deep Black Returns!.......2005-03-07
Once again you have the stars of the NSA(National Security
Agency,Charlie Dean,Tommy Karr,and Lia DeFrancesca back into
action. Lia has to first escape Korea before she can join her
teammates in France. While the head of NSA Ruebens is battling
for the security and existance of NSA the team has incovered a
frightening consparicy. There is a nuclear weapon missing from
the French stockpile. After an intense investigation it is found
to be in the possession of an Algerian terrorist. The villain in
this story(the terrorist) intends on exploding the nuclear bomb
and disrupting the landscape of France. This blast would alter
the coastline and affect the landscape of France.Charlie Dean
and the team are also having to deal with a traitor in their ranks as well. You have several exciting scenes at the Eiffel
Tower and the Chunnel. The story has an exciting ending as well.
Who actually wrote this thing?.......2005-03-01
I have never written a review before but i just had to so others would not feel the same pain. I have read almost all of Coonts other books and bought this with anticipation. What a boring bunch of junk this was. It was obviously wriiten by the co-author and then had Coonts name put on it by the publisher to give it some credibility. Save your money and look elsewhere.
Thoroughly Entertaining.......2005-02-20
This was book was a page turner. Took me 2-1/2 days to complete it, it was the type of read that sucked you into the story. The characters were well developed, and the scenes had an almost "zen" like flow between them. Personally I felt this book was almost a cinema for the mind.
It's worth the money.
