From the supplier: The career of British author E.L. Grant Watson can be understood in comparison to another Cambridge University graduate, English naturalist Charles Darwin. Both men undertook scientific voyages, and spent the rest of their lives trying to make sense of their experiences. Watson came to Australia in 1910 to study Aboriginal anthropology, which made him question his Eurocentric assumptions.

Product Description
We wrote the book on personal transformation: John Doe was an ordinary guy: Had a wife (girlfriend) and while he worked (was in school) full time and had a couple of hobbies, he also wanted to be bigger and stronger. John had no special genetic gifts and no interest in drugging up; plus, he had to keep the training routine and the accompanying diet very simple as well as extremely effective. Enter SUPER SQUATS, and six weeks later, the 150-pound, somewhat shaky version of John Doe had been replaced by a 180-pound fire breather who knew he could walk through walls, because he'd just done it. SUPER SQUATS is the definitive book on the classic 20-rep squat routine . . . it's been around for almost 75 years and it's the system that turns scarecrows into musclemen. Whether you're trying to outgrow your size small shirts or are hunting for a win at World's Strongest Man, here's the winning recipe when it comes to bulking up. 112 pp.

Super Squats Solid Advice.......2007-09-27
I have been training for years and for the past year I have been training with my 15 year old son. I was looking for a program that we could follow that would increase out strength. Since I am in my mid forties and my son is 15 I wanted something that would be a challenge for him without causing me to burnout.
This book offered solid advice. After years of trying all kinds of programs it was good to read a book that goes back to the basics and presents them in a clear cut entertaining way.
It works! It works! It works!.......2007-09-20
I read the book three times, and followed a variant of the abbreviated program. I gained 25 lbs in six weeks, and 10 more lbs in the four weeks following (having followed Strossen's advice and switched to 5 x 5 at about the six week mark).
I will be going for another six week cycle in about a month, and will write another review, perhaps more extensive, to report my gains.
This book is an absolute MUST HAVE for one who wants to get big. Anyone who actually reads Super Squats, as opposed to most of the reviewers here, will see that this is no invention of fancy by Strossen, but in fact a systhesis of the history and experience of what has truly worked.
Good fundamental info w historical context and an inspirational tone.......2007-09-06
I liked this book better than I thought I would. The training concept is simple and is completely summarized in other reviews. The real value here lies in the history of the use of this exercise and other simple core lifts to build amazing strength and the inspirational tone.
Where the book falls down is in the technique area. I wouldn't even consider getting this book without also buying Starting Strength. I was extremely impressed with the detailed instructions, tips, diagrams, organization and other factors for the core exercises of squat, bench press, deadlift, shoulder press and power clean. It also has good simple routines based on these lifts and it loaded with fine points for each lift and all the whys you need to know.
I was a physiology teaching fellow in graduate school and I was extremely impressed with the quality of the information, references, etc. I think the approach is very aggressive here and for many people who are older, less fit or don't have perfect technique taking extra time to build up to the heaviest weight makes more sense.
For two great books with more information on exactly the right techniques, I recommend in this order: Starting Strength, Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body and From Scrawny to Brawny. This last title is NOT the best on technique, but has a lot of good suggestions to prevent injury and modify movements for hardgainers.
Squant N' Milk .......2007-05-20
Google: 'Squats and Milk program' and you get the same routine that's in this book but FREE. I own the book and liked it BUT the only problem i have is the high frequency recommended. It says to start with a minimum of 150% of your bodyweight for the squats, do them Mon-Wed-Fri and add 5lbs at EVERY squat workout. This is simply TOO MUCH. I have done this routine and somehow managed to finish it and it DOES work, but in the years since then i've learned and had better gains from taking the routine and modifying it by starting with around 50-60% of your 1 rep max in the Squat and starting from there.
DON'T 'start with your ten rep max and get 20 reps no matter what!' like the book suggests or you WILL burn yourself out and quit the routine after a few weeks.
AGain, this book is a great read and a classic for anyone who is 'into' lifting weights, BUT you can just Google 'Squats and Milk program' and get the same thing for free ;-)
No Pain, No Gain.......2007-04-10
If you want to gain huge amounts of muscle mass and strength, this book will show you how. There is a lot of sweat and tears involved, but the system works.

Customer Reviews:
Middling quality.......2007-05-21
A decent book, but flawed in a few ways. Provides enough information about the test itself, but focuses more on practice tests - which is probably the best way to prepare.
However, the practice tests are mediocre at best. The multiple-choice sections are decent, but a number of the questions are a bit iffy. Each practice test includes answers and explanations. The explanations are frequently insufficient; often they would say no more than "Answer D is the only correct answer choice". This isn't an explanation - it's a restatement of the answer. Of course, many of the explanations were good; a few even detailed why each particular answer choice was wrong. However, I encountered far more vague explanations than thorough explanations. The book also fails to deal with documentation questions on the multiple choice. Each practice test includes one or two, but when I took the AP there were four or five documentation questions. Furthermore, these questions were more varied than the practice ones. The CliffsAP book failed to adequately deal with this aspect of the test.
CliffsAP did even worse on the free-response section. The practice tests failed to represent the basic format of the free-response: one synthesis essay, one rhetorical analysis, one argumentation. Many of the practice tests presented two rhetorical analysis essays or two argumentation essays. Many of the essay prompts feel hastily prepared and poorly designed. The synthesis essays were the worst. Occasionally, the prompt and the sources addressed different issues. On nearly all of the synthesis prompts, the documents were very poorly selected. One essay featured four articles by the same newspaper. Another was comprised primarily of letters to the editor. Actual AP synthesis questions feature a variety of sources; the one I encountered included encyclopedia entries, newspaper articles, and book excerpts, among other sources. The CliffsAP essays were way off target.
Nonetheless, the book helped me prepare for the AP. It did a decent job, but I can't help but feel like it could've been far better written. In the end, I regret buying this book. I don't know what the Princeton Review book is like, but I can't imagine it's worse than this.

was very fast.
Practical and specific.......2007-01-10
I've just begun to use this text with my AP English 1 students, but the exercises and the explanations are clear. The text reflects the changes that will appear on the upcoming exam in May. I would recommend its purchase.
The BEST help you will ever need!.......2006-12-20
I used the the first edition of this book with my students for years and the newly-updated edition is even better than before! VERY practical advice and REAL examples from the author's students, so it's not some adult trying to be a teenager. Don't let the Cliff's title fool you--this is quality instruction from an experienced educator!

Good Book.......2007-06-12
This is a good book. It has an excellent glossary, and the practice tests are very good.
Better Than I Expected.......2006-05-16
When I bought this book, I wondered how a book could help you review for the AP Lit exam, since there are no facts to really cover like in other exams. However, this book is extremely useful for those seeking a high score. It brings you step by step through the process of writing prompts, pointing out important details and giving a plethora of examples. The tips on the multiple choice questions allow you to review all the major terms you need and offers many opportunities to test yourself, with the why behind the answer included. Plus, you will feel better about the test because it is written by a former test writer. This makes it feel like you can trust what he is saying about the test, and I do not remember him being wrong once when it came to the actual exam. In conclusion, buy this book or don't buy one at all.
Reasonable, though slightly outdated.......2006-05-11
PROS:
This book offers substantial advice; the most useful piece of which (in my opinion) was "In the essays, be sure to ANSWER THE ESSAY QUESTION, the whole question and nothing but the question." It also walks the reader through several multiple choice passages.
CONS: The literary term list was somewhat basic, and in general, the essay-writing advice seemed confining and old fashioned.
For a more jazzy, student-friendly AP English Lit. Prep book, see the Princeton Review.
AP Cliff Notes.......2006-02-25
The Cliff Notes are an excellent way to review a book(s) you have read before taking a test or doing class work. Cudo's to these writers and publishers.
Very Helpful.......2006-02-25
This book is really helpful while taking the AP Literature class. It gives some good strategies on how to actually take the test and the practice questions are very similar to what is seen on the test. I definately recommend this book.

Best AP Teacher's Tool!.......2007-06-22
I use this with my AP Students and it serves as a true basis for the entire course overall! My students have learned an extensive amount from the help of CliffsNotes. It provides you with everything you need to know for the test, and it gives you your own leeway to do what you will with all of the information given.
Buy this product! It is worth it
HURRAY!!!!.......2006-03-01
This book is awesome... I haven't used it a lot recently but it is a great study guide for the AP test. I hope that I pass with flying colors and I think I will thanks to this life saver.
Not bad. I managed to get a 4 using this book only........2004-12-06
I'll be honest. I think I was well prepared for AP exam way before reading this book. I've had hardcore Honors English 2 to help prep me for the AP class.
I didn't use this book till the week before the exam. The multiple choice questions were nothing like the ones on the AP exam, which I thought were easier than the ones in the book. If you really want to do well on AP exam, just do the multiple choice and see what you missed. I scored low on each exam (missed 10 or so) and didnt grade myself on the essays.
The good parts of the book are the comprehensive review of glossary terms and the section on writing the essay. AP English is the easiest AP exam to prep for. You don't necessarily need the AP class. You just need to know literary terms and how to write concisely. Overall, 4 stars for getting me the 4 on the AP exam. For the most part, most people in my class got 4s and I dont necessarily think it has to do with the book, but I think if you need practice, this is a decent book.
Excellent prep book.......2004-08-30
I basically took the AP Lang exam using only this book to prepare, and I scored a 5. I did walk into it with pretty developed writing skills, but this book helped me understand and improve my literary analysis. I did about ten of the sample essays and one of the multiple choice sections in the practice tests. The student written essays are helpful; the high scoring ones give you a good idea of what the scorers are looking for.
The main thing to keep in mind on the AP Lang test is sounding intelligent is most important, even if your points are simple. As Oscar Wilde so eloquently put it, "In matters of great importance, style, not sincerity, is what really matters."
OK.......2004-07-26
This book had a decent list of terms, although I've stumbled across better ones in books my friends owned. The main plus to it was detailed analysis of essays written by students under the exact same testing conditions. Although their examples of 8's and 9's seemed quite a bit higher than what my teacher accepted (and she's a tough grader), it was helpful to see how my writing stacked up. I scored a 4 on the exam, with this being my main study guide. Also, my teacher would pass copies out to the class for discussion a few times a year, meaning that she approved, I'm sure.
