Book Description
An extended amplification of (and a vigorous argument for) the idea originally published in Journal of Theoretical Biology: that conventional evolutionary theory which claims mechanisms observable in the plant kingdom were entirely responsible for the evolution of all complex animals, including humans, is profoundly incomplete. Graham corrects this major weakness by assigning a central role in the origin and evolution of complex animals to lethal cancer in juveniles, a process he calls "cancer selection." Written in an accessible but deliberately provocative style, Graham intends to provoke conventional evolutionists even as he welcomes the active support of thoughtful amateurs.

Don't dismiss this ..........2006-12-27
This book opened a lot of doors in terms of the relationship between Martial Art and Medicine. I give these books credit in the sense that helped deepen people's association between external movements and internal applications. However, as a Doctor of traditional Chinese medicine who is both western trained and trained in China, the point applications in this book rank up there with George Dillman ... they are not correct ... not even close.
For the record I am insulting Montaigue or his students, I'm just calling it like I see it.
Why are all of the points mentioned with no genuine relationship to the Chinese Calander? If you are trying to look into the energetic components of kung fu ... it is the proverbial "horse stance" of the concept.
Why are there no detailed pieces of info on Qi Gong and Chinese Medical Theory? If you want to hit like a Chinese, you need to think like a Chinese.
Fa Jing doesn't mean "explosive energy". Why is there no sexual Kung Fu explanation as a part of "Fa Jing" as it relates to this book?
Three major misses like that make me write these type of books off.
Other than that, it's a great text book ... it has a really pretty cover and nice stories in it.
Well laid out techniques.......2005-02-12
I like this one because of how easy it is to follow what Mr. Montaique has presented. I could use the techniques shortly after reading about them. Well written. This is just nother example of his martial abilities.

Good stuff on the art of Dim Mak.......2003-11-23
I'm sure some people are reading my title and saying, "but dim-mak isn't an art", but that's what this book pretty much focuses on. Erle Montaigue is best at putting horns and claws on the internal Chinese arts, and that's exactly what he does in this book. It's a great book on accupuncture points, their martial applications, and using taiji to attack them. The sections on C-back and Fa-jing are useful to everyone. The author goes into how the points work, how to counter the effects of being hit in those points, basic "chi circulation" theory, some chi kung, and some excersises to mess with your chi flow. I have just some minor complaints about this book. First, some of the points mentioned were not actually covered, like "strike point so-and-so", but no where in the book is that point's location given. Also, it's kind of oriented to someone with some background in taiji (t'ai chi), which I'm not, so some references to certain possitions just left me confused. There is a video that makes this book easier to understand, done by Montaigue, by Paladin Press. Overall, a very unique look at pressure-point striking, offering insights into why these points work the way they do. A good book for anyone interested in the subject of pressure-point strikes. This is one of my favorite books, and I learn something new every time I read it.
Great Info but hard to follow.......2003-05-26
The information in the book is worth 10 times the price. Stuff i never saw in 6 years of TKD. But i had to watch the video to get what the pictures were trying to show. The pictures in the book are really poorly done. Get the video, if you like it and want more then get the book.
Worth your time........2001-10-18
First off, for the purpose of this book, you could nearly make the equation "Dim Mak=Taijiquan". Whether you agree with that or not doesn't matter much, but prospective buyers should be aware that this is a book on taijiquan, with a smattering of other things. Bagua for example.
A must-read for any serious practitioner of taijiquan and highly recommended for martial artists of any style interested in details of point striking. Mr. Montaigue is certainly a controversial figure who has both his supporters and his detractors. I am not really concerned with any of that though, although I have never met the author, I have met plenty of people in both camps--but if you are a practitioner of taijiquan, perhaps even more importantly one that does not focus on striking, then you should at least consider a viewpoint different than your own. I call it a must read because even if you are dead set against what Mr. Montaigue teaches and says, you should at least confront it for yourself, and not be dependent upon someone else's viewpoint.
I personally have a soft spot for this book because back in the early 80s, before there was an ocean of books on taijiquan (in the US at least), before there were magazines dedicated to it, anyone who did anything differently from what you were taught simply "wasn't doing tai chi". In those days you took a lot of flack if you believed that those things that looked like punches or slaps were actually meant for hitting. This book was one of the first longer studies on striking in taijiquan available.
Also at that time there was not much exposure to different forms. Certain postures from long boxing are not explicit in either the form or short form, and one might simply glance at this book and mistakenly say "that's not taiji", dismissing it as not authentic. You may do that anyway, but doing so for those reasons is primarily conditioned hubris.
Despite the book's title, it is NOT only concerned with death. In addition to this, Mr. Montaigue provides chapters that deal with life, using these points to heal and treat afflictions--not simply treating someone who has been struck, but also someone afflicted with corresponding illnesses (sunstroke, for instance). Information is also provided on qi gong and applying specific taiji postures and sequences for treating specific ailments. These chapters are sadly very short but are loaded with interesting information, that could prove useful. Also included is a brief transcript of a Q&A between Mr. Montaigue and Chang Yiu-chun which is extremely worthwhile. Such chapters contain many pearls to be plucked by attentive readers.
The book can also help one understand reasons behind certain movements that one might never have thought about, or simply performed by rote, the importance of which may have been overlooked. An example of this occurs in Mr. Montaigue's application of "Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain". This example helped me understand the turning over of the palm in a new light. This is not an isolated example. Even if one were to disagree with an application as presented, getting up and testing the posture will be good for your development.
A minor complaint I will register at this point is that although many of the applications shown are drawn directly from taiji postures, Mr. Montaigue generally does not relate the descriptions and photos to those postures by name. This is a drawback to me as a taiji practitioner, but perhaps would be a plus to martial artists of different schools. In the end it doesn't matter much because if you know the postures you can recognize them, however it does make thumbing through looking for a specific posture a headache.
This brings us to the flaws of the book. The book suffers from a somewhat lax job of copyediting. Although not overly burdened with typos, there are enough to annoy me. This is a minor complaint for a book of this genre; I do have more serious complaints as to some points of editing and production. For example: "When your opponent kicks, simply move in and strike St32..." (p. 130.) There is no point St32 discussed in the book. I think this may be a mistake for Gb32, but perhaps the St32 point was edited out of the manuscript. This seems clearly to be the case just below that in a discussion of striking Sp8 and Sp9. These points are not in the book in its published form and do not appear to be mistakes. A prospective buyer should be aware of these problems as they do occur, but also rest assured that they are not widespread. Also, clarity was sacrificed for page count. In a book of this nature, IMHO, clarity should be paramount. Diagrams and photos often do not appear on the same pages as their corresponding text. This is especially annoying if you are standing up and working through the applications. In some instances the photos are two full pages away.
Given these problems, why not downgrade the rating? I do not consider these problems with the instruction, or with Mr. Montaigue's techniques. I am not rating the book on aesthetic principles, but rather on the the martial and other presented, especially to taijiquan. Mr. Montaigue shares his knowledge without holding back. His style is casual and friendly, yet authoritative. Again, you may not agree with what he says or believes, but you should confront it on your own.

Customer Reviews:
An Interesting Read.......2006-09-16
The book followed the following general format. The author's explanation of his art, his opinions on being a martial artist, basis stances, illustrations of dim mark (or pressure point) strikes for control and potential death, his opinions on health and nutrition, and his philosophy on teaching children martial arts. There were less than 200 pages on dim mak (or pressure points) and the rest were focused on the author's opinions and philosophy.
I gave this book three stars primarily because the book focused too much on his philosophy and opinions instead of focusing on dim mak. Moreover, the illustrations and diagrams were not as detailed as I had expected.
I think this book is an interesting read and would complement such books as, "The Ancient Art of Life and Death: The Book of Dim-Mak" which the author of the book under review also appears to have recommended. The aforementioned book is one that I owe and I use as a reference.
the rewiew.......2004-05-16
This book is over 300 pages and has a lot of diagrams. The diadvantage of the book is it is very complicated to learn and the movements take a lot i mean alot of time to do. i have not seen a book with that much information and exercises.if you are new to dim-mak chances are when you see the blocks and stance of dimmak you would quit. Howewer the advantage is it does have chapters on very basic self defence easy to learn moves and does show you how to ko a person and how to revive them in more than ten ways. If your searching for a book on deadly strikes this is the book to buy and yes the moves do work. so deadly that you would have to think thrice before using them and in a physical fight chances are you would not use such effective moves AUTOMATICLY if you dont practice everyday it does also explain on how the moves work and includes also the st.9 point
Great follow-up book.......2003-12-20
This book is an excellent continuation of Mr. Montaigue's first book, "Dim-Mak: Death Point Striking". In this book, the author goes into footwork, and how to keep your ballance while moving (ignored by a lot of folks); how to handle a knife attack; different Qi-gong and other excersises; qi-related nutrition, and much more! I think a lot of what's in this volume could probably stand alone, but to truly begin to understand it's depth, the first book is needed. Once again, the author's style of writting is very laid-back and personable; I felt like he was right there, talking to me. As for the content, this book has so much that's missing from other books on the Chinese and/or internal martial arts. For those who don't know, a lot of Mr. Montaigue's system is based on T'ai Chi and Paqua; he's just put claws on those styles, and made them "martial" again. The chapter on how to bring up internal "animal" energy was very unique, and the chapter on knife defense seems very practical. A chapter on martial arts ethics is also included, which was nice, as well as a chapter discussing teaching martial arts to children. If you own "Death Point Striking", and wish to learn more on the subject, this should be your next book. I'd also recomend this to those who wish to learn about holistic health from a Chinese perspective, as well as martial artists who are searching for more than just the latest fad, who really want to refine themselves.
WOW ! ! ! !.......2002-06-27
I must say that Erle Montaigue just never seems to dissapoint!! He is without a doubt a true master of this fine art. His technique, and training is superb. Also his explanations of how, and why are great. I would recomend it to anyone with intrest in this art. Yet another must have.
very well defined.......2000-07-14
This is a very detailed book on Dim Mak. Having read other books from different authors and being disappointed. I must say that Erie has done a very good job. But don't read this one till you've read the first.

Spiritual Depression: Evalutation and Review.......2007-04-10
Though a beautifull collection of Sermons by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones of the Westminster Chapel preaching on the relatioships between the physical, the psychic and the spiritual it is completely founded in Christianity. I found it a little too dogmatic about "Unhappy Christians" being a poor recommendation for Christian Faith from clear common causes to ending with on how to be content, exclusively rooted in biblical scripture. For me it was too religious, but a fair but a fair read for us commom folks. The sermons were from the pulpit in 1964, taken down by shorthand, and eventually published in 1966. I expected the book to more contemporary and not so old, however, if ypu lean towards a strict fundamentalist understanding and approach to Christianity, you will find this book still applicable to to your faith today in the arena of "God's Gymnasium". It is seen through a prism beginning with a strong foundation, sin and vain regrets, fear of the future, spiritual bondage, discipline, trials, and the peace of God. I was still left wanting, however, I experience a life long history of genectic and physiologic clinical depression, and I am not a literalist when it comes to theology.
It was Okay........2007-04-03
I became more depressed reading it b/c I felt like the author was implying that depression is only caused by past sins in your life and that you are a poor example of the Christian way of life if you are depressed.
The Best Book on this Subject!.......2007-02-07
This book is written by one who understands what the Scriptures teach regarding depression. Before you seek a drug prescription, read what Jones has to say. You will be "glad" you did.
Highly Sensitive But Primarily Intellectual.......2007-01-31
This book is very very good. Very! The problem I had with it had more to do with a paradox Reverend Lloyd-Jones might not even have been aware of: when Christians fall into depression of the severity he addresses so well, *any* book will appear too intellectual.
Having said that, "Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cures" is a kind of spiritual boot camp. There will be days you'll look at it on your shelf and go Ugh! I don't want to go near those spartan biblical principles. (And God will still love you if you say this.) There will be days when you'll grab it as soon as you wake up in the morning. I purchased the book to help with unresolved bereavement, when some days you're able to forget the departed one and some days grief paralyzes you. Reverend Lloyd-Jones' book was "always there," whether I picked it up or not, and in this respect, it was like having a pastor in my house.
Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cures.......2007-01-19
In a time when so many are struggling with depression and finding their only help in prescription drugs or popular counceling this book is there to help in a very different way. In a series of sermons Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones describes the many and varied ways the Christian can fall into a depressed state and lays out some sound help found in the Word of God. I believe this book would be a useful tool to a Christian councelor, minister or anyone dealing with their own or another's depression whether alone or in addition to conventional treatment.

While the clan is traveling on the trail, Thea dies and Penny is forced to take care of Belinda. In the end, the group arrives in Oregon and Penny gets a job. Book Description
Featuring a new introduction, this classic by management's top guru forecasts the business trends of the next millennium. Peter Drucker's career as a business author spans 60 years, and centers around his three seminal management works: The Frontiers of Management, Managing for the Future, and Managing in a Time of Great Change. The Frontiers of Management is a clear, direct, lively, and comprehensible examination of global trends and management practices. There are chapters dealing with the world economy, hostile takeovers, and the unexpected problems of success. Jobs, younger people, and career gridlock are also covered. Most of all, the man The Wall Street Journal calls "the first of the analytical futurists and the first of the management philosophers" stresses the importance of forethought and of realizing that "change is opportunity" in every branch of executive decision-making.
Customer Reviews:
An entrepreneurial teller of tales.......2003-09-17
An entrepreneur endows something with new wealth-making capacity. The majority of small businesses are incapable of innovation. There is entrpreneurial work and there is managerial work.
High tech is living in the nineteenth century. The great role for high tech is creating a climate for entrepreneurs. In Japan ther is still a cult of bigness. Entrepreneurship is not a romantic subject. It is hard work.
The two great economists of the twentieth century were Joseph A. Schumpeter and John Maynard Keynes. Both challenged long-standing assumptions. The two saw different economic realities. Schumpeter became one of the fathers of the business cycle theory.
Widow-makers, jobs that regularly defeat even good people, appear more often when a company grows or changes fast. The conventional organization of business was modeled after the military. That power follows property is one of the laws of politics. Another is that reponsibility follows power.
The Japanese have been Drucker's most avid readers. The purpose of business is to create customers and satisfy customers. Watson of IBM was a computer seer and social innovator. Watson was an autocrat, of course. Visionaries usually are. Intelligent monopolies cut their own prices before competitors do.
Crystal gaze by Drucker.......2001-08-08
Excellent book on Management.
A compilation of the papers on the contemporary trends and what they indicate for the future as seen by Drucker in the mid-eighties. This revised edition with only slight changes stands good for the economic realities of even today. That's precisely the speciality of this book.
The chapter on economy deals with the economy as seen differently by Keynes and Schumpeter, two contemporary economists of which the latter is not very well known. The concept of Dynamic disequilibrium is elaborated in an easily understandible manner. Also the concept of profit as to be the future cost and the ethical questions attached with profit making are clearly answered.
Cartel theory with relevance to the oil cartel and the developments leading up to the fall of the same is also dealt with.
Chapters on the relevance of unions and their changing role in today's industry, inevitability of automation, need for the rationalisaing the salaries and wages of the blue collar workers, chapters on IBM Tom watson, dependence of Japanese economy on US economy and the exim policies of the successive governments in US and their effect on the competitiveness of US exports all make an interesting read.
The macro perspective one gets after reading the book will enable you appreciate the relevance of the projections and caveats sounded by Drucker long before today's events(and those of the recent past) showed any signs of occurence at all.
A treasure of genius.......2001-01-09
Bookstall 99 stands in awe of this collection of expessions of management genius. For a great tool in understanding Drucker as the master of management in America, this is your book. Great reading no matter who you are or what you do.
Absolutely Superb!!!.......1998-09-23
Drucker took a lot of risks predicting the inevitable decline of commodity prices, as well as the current East Asian/Japanese financial difficulties, when this book was first published in the mid-1980's. More importantly he details the reasoning behind his predictions. Drucker once again demonstrates with this book why he is the Godfather of all management "gurus"!!
