5 out of 5 stars For the.......2002-06-30

As stated above, this book is outstanding. Weurthner doesn't use schmaltz or gross florid language to help readers better understand the varied CA wilderness areas, and his knowledge is super accurate. GW also doesn't insult readers by giving ridiculous and pedantic trail descriptions (you know who you are Jeff Schaffer and Company!). This book resonates with a lot of dignity and will complement those automatonic guidebooks that you already own.

5 out of 5 stars Howard Craig.......2000-06-22

I absolutely love this book. The pictures are outstanding. I love his style of writing. He's very matter of fact and tells it like he sees it. Hiking the areas he describes is what I want to do when I retire. Forget the rocking chair.

    Book Description

When you think of Arizona, you think desert. But Arizona is also home to mountains that top 12 ,000 feet and broad plateaus that are shaded by ponderosa pines, spruce, and fir. Sheer cliff faces soar skyward, mesas abound, and, yes, Arizona is dissected by gulches, abysses, and canyons, including the impressive Grand Canyon. It is in this grand variety of topographies that recreational activities and camping opportunities abound.

In 2000 and 2001, former President Bill Clinton established five new national monuments in Arizona: Grand Canyon-Parashant, Vermilion Cliffs, Agua Fria, Sonoran Desert, and Ironwood Forest. These new national monuments encompass some of the state's most biologically and culturally rich wildlands. There's something for everyone in the new edition of Exploring Arizona's Wild Areas.

With nearly 500 trail descriptions, this classic guide from the Appalachian Mountain Club provides enough information for years--if not a lifetime--of hiking. The book's goal is to give complete coverage of trails in the White Mountains National Forest; it achieves this goal by providing history, geography, and shelter information as well as trail highlights such as spectacular viewpoints and lightly trampled getaways.

The guide includes the lower-lying lakes region in southeastern New Hampshire and numerous trails up Mount Washington, the highest peak in New England. Trails, drawn on large, foldout topographic maps, range in difficulty from easy to advanced. Experienced hikers seeking to become members of the Four Thousand Footer Club will find 65 4,000-foot-plus peaks in the area. --Dolores Kong

5 out of 5 stars Superb guide to Arizona wilderness areas.......2000-08-01

This is an excellent guide for hikers to the wilderness areas in Arizona. It includes many fine areas, such as Apache Creek , Cedar Bench, and Pine Mountain not covered in the newer "Guide to Arizona Wilderness Areas."

Each of the 87 areas includes a quick summary of important info such as distance & elevation, detailed instructions to reach the areas and find the trailheads (and whether 4WD is required), a basic map of the wilderness area (including access roads and designated trails), discussion of geology, plants, wildlife, and sometimes historical notes. Many areas include B&W pictures.

Some areas have descriptions of activities beyond hiking, such as river running, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing.

5 out of 5 stars Exemplary collection of Arizonaýs Wild Areas.......1999-01-01

Covering over eighty designated wilderness areas you will be suprised. The focus of the book is to provide valuable information. Geology, history, plants, wildlife, and seasons to explore are well documented. Areas rarely published make this a great book. I agree with Todd Tiddyman's review, you will enjoy this book time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Hiking Arizona.......1997-08-10

This book is one of Scott Warren's exemplary outdoor-related books. This mammoth effort includes area and trail descriptions for 87 of Arizona's Wild Areas. Descriptions of each area include statistics, hiking seasons recommended, plants and wildlife, geology, and a hiking narrative which includes good trail information as well as detailed information on how to access trailheads. An excellent basic map detailing every trail accompanies each area. This book is the first one I reach for when I am looking for Arizona hiking information. I am sure it will be yours too

3 out of 5 stars Best AMC hut book ever written?.......2001-09-11

Well, I think it's the only book ever written about the AMC's high huts in the White Mountains. And it is quite informative and useful if you plan to do a lot of hut hikes. The maps and short hike info definitely enhanced my hut trip.

But I would rather see something a little less blandly "official" and a little more "behind the scenes." I'd have appreciated more anecdotes about what goes on during those long summer days when the hut crews have spare time. I know that the crews famously play pranks on each other. And surely the advent of "co-ed" crews has resulted in some, eh, hanky panky? If there are such interesting stories, they are not in this book.

5 out of 5 stars BEST HUT BOOK EVER WRITTEN!.......2001-03-16

My dad and I love to go to AMC huts and this book is my bible. I read it all the time, and bring i t with me when going to huts. Just be warned, if you are hiking on the gulfside trail from Madison Springs Hut to Lakes of the Clouds hut, the book says 4.5 hours. WRONG. The correct time is 9.5 hours.

This comprehensive guide to the trails and roads of the Mt. Lassen area is tailored to a variety of outdoor recreationists--hikers and horse packers, skiers and snowshoers, botanists and bird watchers, sightseers and rock hounds, anglers and hunters. Included is a foldout topographic map.

          Book Description

Although primarily a comprehensive trail guide to Lassen Park, this book also contains a road log keyed to the roadside markers that signal interesting features within the park, information on the natural history of the area, as well as information on campgrounds, resorts and more. Covers Lassen Park, Caribou and Thousand Lakes wildernesses, Hat Creek Valley and McArthur-Burney Falls State Park. Includes a topographic map that shows the Park and vicinity on one side, and the adjacent wilderness areas on the other.

          Customer Reviews:

          1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2003-07-12

I can't believe others are reviewing this book so highly. It is an OK natural-history guide, with a decent general overview of the area. But don't try to get anywhere with this book or look for specific information. For example, although it has individual chapters for each region (e.g. Caribou wilderness, Thousand Lakes, etc.), they don't contain any information on geology, fishing, zoology, etc. Instead, these topics are lumped into their own general chapters in the front of the book. With the notable exception of the wildflowers section, these chapters seem somewhat topical and weak. In the case of fishing, the "chapter" is one page. Likewise with resorts and campgrounds, which are lumped into a three-page list in a separate chapter, rather than discussed by region.

Although it contains one nice topo for the entire Lassen area, the 1:62500 scale and lack of detailed maps for any of the sections makes finding trailheads or following trails nearly impossible. I guess it's just not clear what this book is trying to be -- if it is a natural-history guide, as the back cover proclaims, why so much space describing trails(half the book or more)? If it is a trail guide, why no decent maps to make it usable?

1 out of 5 stars Not a book for backpackers.......2003-01-16

I was very disappointed in the overall format and descriptive narrative of this book. If you are a rock hound or a naturalist that is concerned with all of the Latin names of every plant species in the Lassen area, this review may not apply. However, if you plan on using this book to help plan a multi-day backpacking/hiking trip through Lassen you should look elsewhere.

No doubt the author is very knowledgeable about the area, but the format is not for trip planning, but more for reference to read as you are walking the trails. The trails are not linked in loops, or connected for round-trip hikes in any discernable way which is a necessity for trip planning in my opinion. Overall, this book is great if you want to catalogue volcanic rock and plants, but if you are planning a backcountry trek look for another hiking guide.

4 out of 5 stars Nice guide - more than just trails, too.......2002-09-03

This book is an encyclopedic guide to the Lassen Volcanic National Park area, including Lassen itself, the Caribou and Thousand Lakes Wildernesses, Hat Creek Valley, and McArthur-Burney Falls State Park.

While the book covers its main focus - hiking trails - more than adequately, it also includes more than one hundred pages about the natural history of the area, road logs for driving in the National Park, descriptions of nature trails, and a decent, removable map of the area. Although the main text is somewhat dated (1981), a helpful six-page update from 1999 is included. All this information does make the book a little bulky for hiking or backpacking, so photocopy the pages you'll need before you hit the trail. (And remember that big guidebooks with lots of information are better than those that don't have enough!)

The only criticism I have to offer is that Schaffer tends to ramble off-track in some of his trail descriptions, but this is a minor complaint. All in all, a good, comprehensive guidebook to the area.

5 out of 5 stars The best value in hiking books.......1999-09-04

The Lassen book is great with good trail descriptons. I recomend Schaffer's books to any one who enjoys hikeing. Most of his books come with a map.

          Book Description

Get out of town and out of your car; pay attention to the natural world around you. The experience can be unforgettable. That simple message is the theme of this love letter to the wild American West. Howard L. SmithÂ's enthusiastic accounts of his trailside adventures will make you want to take the day off and enjoy your own harmony with the wilderness.

Most of the experiences Smith shares took place in New Mexico and Colorado, with some in Wyoming, Montana, and the Pacific Northwest. Some happened deep within wilderness areas, but most unfolded near easily accessible trails and campsites. One need not be in good physical condition to follow in SmithÂ's footsteps. Light walking or mobility through use of a wheelchair are the only requirements.

Although Mountain Harmonies is not a guidebook, it suggests enticing possibilities for expeditions and road trips. Give it to friends to show them how easy it is to enjoy the outdoors. Use it to plan your next weekend trip. Read it afterward to recall the magic of the wilderness and the creatures that inhabit it.

Howard L. SmithÂ's enthusiastic accounts of his trailside adventures will make you want to take the day off and enjoy your own harmony with the wilderness.

5 out of 5 stars Harmonies for all of us.......2004-05-25

What a delightful read. Although I am not a hiker, I enjoy being an armchair explorer and Smith's book brings nature close to hand. The unique and insightful perspectives on hiking makes one believe they are also experiencing his awe of the wilderness. Although many books have been written about nature, Smith is able to see and share the unique in what others would describe as common. His encounters with wild animals are related to the reader in such a way as to impact on all your senses. His book also exposes the reader to the Native American culture in the Southwest, including new vocabulary and traditions. One of the most interesting aspects of Smith's book, for an armchair explorer, is the accessibility of his experiences rather than the exotic, available to the few. It feels as though I could experience everything he has by following in his footsteps.

Throughout Smith's book, there is an underlying theme of camaraderie, showing nature can be shared with others and yet he is able find moments of solitude at the same time. If you wish to explore nature in the Southwest, there is no better guide than Smith. His writing style is very conversational and filled with images you can recreate very easily in your own mind. For those of us who are not ardent hikers, this is a great way to have a very memorable vicarious experience with nature. Do yourself a favor, take some time from your busy schedule and enjoy the outdoors through the eyes of a marvelous writer.

          5 out of 5 stars Memories rekindled.......2004-04-07

Growing up I traveled frequently to the West and Southwest with my parents (a geologist and an anthropologist) on trips to complete field work. Mountain Harmonies captures the wonderful spirit of the West that I came to know on those many forays. The many fine stories in this book brought back fond memories of those trips with my parents. Of all the rales I really enjoyed the encounters with grizzly and black bears because for me they symbolize natures purity. This is an engaging and enjoyable book.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Information and Presentation BUT Needs To Be Updated!.......2007-07-01

This book is very interesting. I started out planning to give it a quick look and ended up reading it almost cover to cover. It contains a lot of very useful information; however, it has a 1970's copyright date and some of the information seems to be outdated. For instance, with respect to snake bites, it still recommends cutting the bite to suck out the venom and applying a tourniquet. Most authorities now indicate that these practices are not only no longer recommended but are actually now considered to be the cause of most of the serious injuries (at least from the venomous snakes in my area).

With a simple update to insure that all information reflects current knowledge, I would feel comfortable giving this book 5 stars and recommending it to everyone. That said, it is still chock full of valuable and potentially life saving information and at the price, it is still a good investment.

5 out of 5 stars If Your GPS Broke, Would You Be Able To Find Your Way?.......2007-06-10

This manual is very extensive. Its range of topics include survival medicine, to creating emergency shelter in the field, to foretelling weather and how to find direction. It includes full color images of poisonous snakes and edible as well as poisonous plants to avoid.

While I haven't been in situations that tested virtually most of these methods, as many are geared toward survival in extreme circumstances, I always take this with me when I hike. I have, however, needed the info on tying knots, have used the pictures to identify snakes, and I often peruse the descriptions of first aid to keep familiar with it.

          ---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---

If you are someone who regularly spends time outdoors, even if it's just a dayhike or camping close to other people, you should really have this book that could help in many situations.

          5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK!.......2007-05-30

This is by far the best book I have seen on this topic. It covers all necessary areas without being too wordy. Don't go camping without it!

5 out of 5 stars Most important for Survival.......2007-04-22

As you can tell from the reviews, this book is a must for anyone who never have thought of what it takes to survive away from societal businesses.

How do you get water when water sources are polluted?

How long will you survive without water?

Prepare for accidents, because they will happen, more often than not.

And, more importantly, you may never know when you'll need to have this highly important manual to rely on.

Buy it, and read it, don't let it sit there without first becoming familiar to it's content. Don't wait until its absolutely necessary to use it first. It just may be a situation that you don't have time or much energy left to absorb the knowledge it contains.

The seas were stormy and perilous as the Apostle Paul, a prisoner, and his fellow passengers headed toward Rome. Tales of their horrifying voyage-and the specific actions they took in order to survive-are the basis for this modern-day "storm survival guide" by Holly Wagner. In her trademark witty style, Holly uses Scripture passages and her own life experiences to deliver humorous yet poignant principles for facing any crisis life throws at you. Chapters include:

REIGN STORM by Deanna Michelle Smith is the story of Storm, a beautiful high school student who thinks the world revolves around her. Not only is she beautiful but she drives a nice car, wears expensive clothes, attends the best school, has the perfect boyfriend and gets everything she wants because her parents spoil her abundantly. Storm believes her beauty is the key to success, and even though her best friend tries to tell her beauty is only skin deep, it falls on deaf ears. She is so caught up in glamour and materialism she ends up in a situation that is not only detrimental to her well-being, but is sure to affect those she loves in a disastrous way.

REIGN STORM is a wonderfully written book that touches on innocence, heartbreak and revenge. It teaches young girls a lesson that there is more to life than looks and money. There is also a lesson for parents to not spoil their children with whatever their heart desires, or the person they become in their adult life will be unhappy, selfish and shallow. The characters were very well-developed so much so that you could not only visualize Storm, but also her parents. I could almost contemplate their moves. Smith did an excellent job writing a novel that not only kept my attention, but had a surprise twist at the end. Smith's debut novel is sure to be a winner among both young girls and older women.

Storm Peterson was spoiled from the moment she was conceived. The only daughter in a family of five- it's either Storm's way or no way until she meets a famous R&B singer who only wants one thing - to get into those cute little panties of hers. Left scorned by his - love `em and leave `em antics- Storm sets out to avenge herself, but not only puts herself in jeopardy- because he is not the one to be played with - but her entire family as well. Ms. Smith has created an awesome story with believable characters, circumstances and situations that is most engaging from the first sentence. Excellent job done and best wishes for a successful writing career.

Storm Peterson soon finds out the hard way that beauty is only skin deep. Blessed with attractive features and well to do parents who overcompensate her accomplishments with expensive gifts, Storm is certain no one can deny her charm. She sets her sights on becoming the girl on the arm of her favorite male singer, Mr. R&B. But Mr. R&B sends Storm on a dangerous ride she isn't ready for. After a single visit to Mr. R&B's mansion, Storm becomes involved in a deadly game she doesn't know how to play.

Reign Storm is a must read for young adult females.

Deanna Michelle Smith has written an exciting but cautionary tale.

I recently assisted with the edits on "Reign Storm". It is an amazing story of naivete, lost love and revenge. The young protagonist, Storm, is in control of all that she surveys...or so she believes. Reign Storm is the story of a girl who has everything, wants more than she can handle, and how her plot for revenge and her quest for controlling her family and her boyfriend crumble before her. It is a sexy, sensual novel that was difficult to put down.

Deanna Smith writes with a unique urban flavor, painting a canvas that highlights urban sophistication, trust, loyalty, love and betrayal. Readers will be engrossed with her flair from the first page to the last.

There should definitely be a sequel to Reign Storm. Best Wishes to you, Deanna.
