Book Description
Under one title, Craig Cameron brings together a thorough look at horses and their nature and good, solid horsemanship skills that suit both novice and experienced riders. The book is divided into sections, each dealing with a different aspect of horsemanship. The first delves into the psychological and physical realities of horses as a species and how man can best understand them to develop a positive, partnering relationship with them. Other sections cover groundwork, including early handling, round-pen exercises, and riding techniques that enable the horse to perform basic as well as intricate maneuvers. Each chapter includes interesting sidebars that complement the main text. Sidebars include "True Story," an anecdote or story that relates to the chapter's subject matter; "Here's How," a tip that pertains to the chapter's focus, and "A Better Way," a troubleshooting section that offers a step-by-step exercise people can do to work the horse through a problem noted in the chapter.
Customer Reviews:
Ride Smart.......2007-05-10
This is a great book that will help improve the horsemanship skills of anyone willing to spend a little time and effort. The text is plain and simple . . . its more like having a conversation with Craig than reading a school book! The ample illustrations really help with understanding the concepts and techniques the author has developed. I'm very happy that I have my copy.
The best.......2007-03-28
If you own and work horses, this book is a must and at a great price.
Wonderful read........2006-11-20
I've learned a lot from this great book. The user comment made before mine is an excellent review. Big beautiful pictures, clear understandable information, and plently of down-to-earth lessons. Craig has taught me unforgetable things on my relationship with any horse I come to know and work with. GREAT BOOK.
Beneficial for Anyone.......2006-11-12
This review comes from a novice rider. I have been taking weekly lessons for a little over a year -- in English riding. Thus, I think it says something for this book that I read it cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed it, even though it is western focused.
The book begins by teaching you about horse psychology, horseman psychology, and equipement, then offers advice on selecting a horse, followed by several chapters of advice on riding. After this, about half way through the book, it begins to teach training methods, and chapter by chapter carries you from first putting a halter on the horse all the way through advanced maneuvers and trailer loading.
Each chapter contains many sidebars with extra hints and tips, explanations of the purpose of some of the techniques, and personal anecdotes that reinforce the lessons and demonstrate the importance of them.
If a picture truly is worth a thousand words, then this book contains several extra volumes withing its pages. It is filled with large, color, quality pictures that clearly show the author himself doing the things he teaches.
Craig Cameron teaches natural horsemanship. You won't find advice on striking your horse in this book. One of his mottos is to make "the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard," not painful.
When I do venture into western riding, I will be much better prepared for it by having read this book. I highly recommend it to riders of any discipline, at any level of training. Even if you never ride western and never train a horse of your own, you will benefit from reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
My grade 6 gifted class loves these!.......2007-09-18
My gifted class will not sit still for a traditional (boring) grammar lesson, but their writing skills aren't keeping pace with their creative ideas. The "Caught'yas" in this book keep my kids focused on doing their grammar...everyday! The lessons help them with their writing and introduce $100 words into their vocabularies. With the included CD, I don't even need to type or write the "Caught'yas." I just copy and paste into a powerpoint and put the daily work on the projector. Truly a great find!
Great service.......2007-09-17
The service I received was excellent. I received the book within 3 days in perfect condition.
Great Book.......2007-06-27
I cannot wait to use this grammar system in my 6th grade classroom. The book has everything you need to jump start your grammar lessons. The book is designed for grades 6-8 to use consecutively. If it works for me I will pass it one to my colleagues. Worth the purchase.
Great teaching tool.......2007-05-17
I am a first year teacher and just accepted a job for next year teaching both math and language arts in the 7th grade. I have never taught language arts before and was looking for motivating ideas when I came across this book. I bought it 3 days ago and have read the whole book already. Kiester does a great job of breaking down the activities and explaining exactly how to use "Caught-Ya" in your classroom. The book includes all of the corrections for each "Caught-Ya", as well as some explainations for why the corrections need to be made. The CD which is included allows you to print out the daily sentences and easily put them on transparencies. The CD also includes a great grammer review resource for those new teachers, like myself, who could use a refresher on some of the terminology as well as suggestions for introducing and reviewing the parts of grammer without boring your students with all the terminology. I am excited about using this technique in teaching my class next year. Wish me luck!!
Silly Fun!.......2007-05-12
I am "testing" this out with my class of gifted fourth-graders, and they love it! They enjoy getting to know a little bit more each day about the kids at Horribly Hard Middle School as well as dream about going to Magic Middle School. What surprised me most was the vocabulary piece. The words are well chosen and well placed. Often I find "challenging" vocabulary to just be wacky- words that we don't hear in our everyday lives. This book, however, keeps the students' interest regarding strong, usable vocabulary. They WANT to look the words up in the dictionary so they have a better understanding of the story, the puns involved, or just to be the one to get to read from the dictionary. We are only on day 16 of the program and I can already see results in the students' own writing.
Teacher's Request to Publisher: Please print a version of this in a binder or spiral format! The little paperback book is a bit hard to hold for reference while writing on the board and teaching the kids (but worth it!). I would pay for it again! :)

Customer Reviews:
A winner for homeschoolers!.......2006-03-30
I have been using this with my three older kids for the past year and this method has helped fill in some gaps and bring understanding to even my most grammar-phobic child! My boys (16, 13 and 11) are all using the same level and we review the sentence together daily, but they have all progressed nicely and painlessly. We will continue to supplement our English program with this easy program.
Caught'Ya Again!: More Grammar With a Giggle.......2002-11-20
Mrs. Kiester has done it again! Before I found Jane Bell Kiester's books, I didn't have a clear path to follow when teaching writing. The Caught'Ya books solve the problem of teaching your students grammar and mechanics. Each day students are given a sentence to correct that adds to a story line appropriate for their age group. Students become engaged in the learning process throughout the story and often can't wait to see what happens next. Students become intimately involved in the story as they become part of the story when the teacher inserts their name as a character in the story. Although Caught'Ya's are integral to the teaching of grammar and mechanics, the greatest bonus I found in using these wonderful sentences was the fact that students naturally and easily learn to paragraph appropriately. This is a difficult task to teach and for students to understand. Caught'Ya's solve this for teachers and students alike. If you can't purchase any other resource this year, you must purchase one of Jane Bell Kiester's Caught'Ya books! Your students will learn to write in a way that will improve all test scores! Do not hesitate! This is the perfect purchase.
less useful than the first.......2002-10-03
i bought the two books together. the first is an absolute must. the second seems less applicable to me as a high school classroom teacher. a lot of it is directed at parents, tutors and homeschoolers -- if you fall into those categories, this book IS a must for you. i didn't get so much out of it. it does have more pre-fab stories, though. if you're not yet comfortable writing your own, you might want this.
a great "handbook" for teaching language arts.......2000-06-11
As a second-year 7th language arts teacher, I found this book to be an invaluable teaching tool! Following Kiester's proofreading sentence strategies, my students' test scores rose dramatically. The author also gives fantastic tips on enhancing reading and writing instruction, providing effective exercieses and ideas that my students thorougly enjoyed.
I have purchased many professional books / journals seeking to improve my teaching and students' attitudes towards grammar. If only these two books could have been my first purchases, then maybe I wouldn't have a dusty bookshelf full of rarely used teaching ideas. The prequel to this book, called Grammar With a Giggle is also a great buy. Both of these books contain strategies that I will continue to implement and expand upon!
Excellent for all students.......1999-09-07
I used Caught Ya for the first time last year with high schools (up to age nineteen) students who read and write between a third and sixth grade level. This program is excellent and works with all students. It is a strategy that makes even the most challenged students become successful and smart! It is fun and the kids truly enjoyed the challenge of "fixing" the sentence each day. Thanks for making grammar and vocabulary fun to teach! Buy this book.
May I also highly recommend the author's book "Blowing Away the State Writing Assessments". We incorporated it into our curriculum this year and highly recommend her four steps to increasing scores. I only wish the author was part of my faculty.

Overly complicated..........2007-10-11
I tried reading the introduction to this book and got bogged down in all the details. I couldn't figure out the program. Too confusing! Also, you have to make up your own stories. I'd rather have a book with everything ready to go for classroom use.
A great approach to grammar.......2007-10-11
I am a new homeschooler. I quickly realized my older kids (ages 7 & 10) needed to work on their grammar. I have tried a number of things but this system seems to have captured their attention. They want to know what happens next in the story. I also appreciate that the author explains the approach and gives examples of how she has used it in her own classroom. The only thing I wish it had was a list of generally accepted proofreading marks that could be easily copied. That would be useful for those of us using it at home. A great purchase for us and a great idea for making grammar fun.
I can't believe how wonderful this is..........2007-05-13
Never would I have thought that my students would love learning about grammar and writing. The first week my students were enthrawled with their daily Caught'Yas! Many students even challenged me to catch them in any grammatical errors. This is one book that I highly suggest to any teacher who is searching for a way to teach grammar in an unique way.
excellent resource.......2007-03-18
I've just started using this book and my students really enjoy it. It gives much room to add your own creative projects to the activity. I have much more class time than i had previously when i spent time teaching isolated grammar concepts. I highly recommend it.
Giggling grammar.......2007-01-03
I have been using one of the daily oral language stories contained in this book and my students love it. The continuous stories really help kids to connect to the subject matter, rather than just focusing on the grammar corrections.
I do wish that the book contained more stories rather than just suggestions.

Book Description
At last... the popular Caught'ya technique of teaching English is adapted especially for the needs of high school teachers. Turn drudge into delight. Three Shakespeare comedies help high school English teachers teach grammar, mechanics, usage, vocabulary, and literary devices. Jane Bell Kiester transforms Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Much Ado About Nothing into adaptable Caught'ya sentences that appeal to high school students at any level -- from basic skills and dropout prevention through high honors and advanced placement.
The resource includes literacy devices., a funny mix-and-match menu of Elizabethan swear words; teaching suggestions and lessons plans; end-of-the-year tests and keys; corrected Caught'ya sentences; and a grammar and usage quick- reference section.
The Bard comes alive with sparkling dialogue and direct Shakespearean quotes sprinkled throughout. Each story includes all the grammar, mechanics, usage and vocabulary that a high school English teacher needs to teach for the entire school year. It takes only minutes a day.
Customer Reviews:
I love this system!.......2005-08-31
I discovered (and bought) Jane's first two Caught'ya books at the national Differentiated Education conference last summer. I have used the high school level stories successfully in the two semesters since then. I wanted more stories so that I could keep my students on track throughout the year, so I ordered The Chortling Bard.
What a resource! There are three fully-completed stories based on some of Shakespeare's most entertaining plays. Not only do my students get practice adn instruction in grammar, but they get exposure to Shakespeare without slogging through it all at once. They can experience the stories and enjoy the plots, since they're not doing the incomprehensible everybody-read-a-part-even-if-you-don't-know-what-you're-saying thing. They may not read the original Shakespeare, but they are involved in the story, which generates discussions, and by the end, they get it!
Bring on "the Bard".......2004-01-21
If you want to continue "caught'ya" fun in high school then this is for you. I have used the "Romeo and Juliet" story from Jane's first book for my ninth graders, and I wanted to continue the "caught'ya" method with my sophomores. "The Chortling Bard" fits the bill nicely. My students loved the story "A Midsummer's Nightmare," and I loved my students' improvement in writing conventions and sentence variety. Put those grammar tomes back on the shelf and "chortle" with the Bard!
Good for a variety of student levels.......2003-01-20
I really like using this technique in my classroom. I'm a bit of a ham and love doing the sentences out loud. Some of my student teachers/subs haven't been so comfortable, though. (You really have to get into the act.) I like the fact that every student can get 100% on the assignment no matter what they're level. Because of the repetitive nature of the assignment, students really do remember what you're teaching them.
Worth more than five stars!.......2001-04-09
As the parent of a grade eight home-schooler, I wish that I could give this book more than five stars. Any book capable of stimulating a student's interest in Shakespeare should be in every teacher's book collection. My son eagerly looks forward to doing this grammar activity just to see what the characters are doing each day! After finishing the first collection of activites in this book, my son asked to read the original Much Ado about Nothing. Simply amazing!

A Homeschool Mom.......2006-02-24
I really liked this concept. It was great to have my son read this entertaining story and correct the mistakes, however, we have found that he has more fun if he writes his own story. He dictates to me and I type (adding the appropriate mistakes unless he reminds me of the rules while I'm typing). The book gave me lots of great ideas though.
An enjoyable, effective approach to English usage........2000-04-25
