    Book Description

Basin Analysis is an up-to-date overview of the essential processes of the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins, and their implications for the development of hydrocarbon resources. Since the first edition of this important and popular text, there has been an explosion of new data, new technology and new concepts in the field. This new edition takes account of these developments while retaining the successful structure and philosophy of the original text.Basin Analysis builds an understanding of sedimentary basins by examining the principles underlying how basins function by looking at their structure, thermal and subsidence history, and stratigraphic architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment for the lay person.......2005-01-07

Couldn't put it down. Liked the logical progression and the variety of information. I didn't know how scattered the bits of continents are! Fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best geology book for lay persons.......2004-09-30

Ron Redfern is a superb writer and peerless photo editor. This book is surely the capstone of his career to date.

Although the subject matter examined is broad and complicated, the book is very well organized and seamlessly drafted. With the exception of a few typographical errors, the information presented is highly accurate. The genius of the work lies in the fact that, despite having to examine complex problems in geology, the author so deftly explains these matters that the reader is never left confused or at a loss.

As to the magnificent color photographs, both large and small, each follows the text closely, and each is accomapnied by an explanatory, locational note. The beauty of many of the pictures is breathtaking. Additionally, accompanying diagrams are thoughtful and informative.

Redfern's masterpiece covers the history and nature of the North American tectonic plate. It is a virtual textbook of plate tectonics. Discussion is divided into several chapters covering the origin of the plate, its relation to other plates, especially the Baltic and African plates, and then into sections describing each part of the plate. Chapters include as subjects such varied areas as the Mississippi delta, the Canadian Shield, the Colorado Plateau, and the Appalachians. You will be endlessly fascinated by the marvelous photos and detailed text, and it seems something new is learned upon each rereading of the book

The book is small coffee-table in size, and would form a proud display in anyone's home. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for lay persons interested in geology, and the book is highly useful for professional and academics in the field of geology, as well. If you want to enjoy reading and learning about the forces that make our marvelous planet operate, this is the book to get. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars Classic book on plate tectonics........1998-10-07

This is a fabulous book describing how the continents were formed. I am a salesperson with no scientific background and I loved Ron Redfern's descriptions, pictures and especially graphics and timelines. I understood it. Wonderful. I wish he had written another.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-12-02

I wish I would have had this book six years ago when I started performing geophysical field work. This book covers everything that you would possibly need to think of when doing small scale geophysical surveys. I have purchased copies of this book for all of the new geophysicists that I work with so they won't make the same mistakes that I did. I read the entire book and highlighted the best sugestions and dog eared a lot of pages.

4 out of 5 stars Update for middle age professionals.......2005-08-27

This book is a chance to update new advances, technics, and methods in geophysics. I rather think this is focused for professionals (on Geology or Geophysics) who have been dealing with a specific area for some years and need to know about the state of the art on Geophysical methods. New developments in GPR, Gravimetry, Magnetometry, Seismic and Electrical exploration is a pretty good chance to take an updated overview on Geophysics.
I recommend such issue as an overview of modern Geophysics, it is not necessary to get involved in hard math develops to understand the goal of the book.

    5 out of 5 stars A very pratical guide..........2001-05-17

John thinks of every eventuality in the field, and especially recommends a very natty rubber mac - I can just see him in it! This book covers every geophysical field technique useful for four or less people (which does NOT include remote sensing, as the person above seems not to recognise). It is written in the same dry, and sometimes faintly sarcastic vein, that anyone who knows him will recognise.

    4 out of 5 stars Field Geophysics.......2000-07-13

This book covers almost all of the current geophysics topics. It gives a sometimes too brief description of the equipment. Reviews the theory and discusses field operations with many helpful hint to stay out of trouble. The book does not cover remote sensing or the metal detector which too many geologists have written off as mearly a hobby

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Uneven material.......2006-11-28

This book provides a fair introduction to geology with fairly clear diagrams and introduction to basics such as geological time scale and plate tectonics. The book tries to emphasize the practical side of geology: what can be seen and picked up. The introduction to common minerals was perhaps not as practical as I'd hoped, for some of the minerals without picture and just a description of chemical structure, hardness, and gravity I could not identify them. The information level was uneven: "a backpack full of rocks can be heavy" to arcane (The chemical reaction with feldspar to produce clay minerals). The section on different rock types was well done, but the section of mapping didn't seem practical (I couldn't really map a bed of coal). I think this book might be best if used with a very local or state geology guide.

    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put The Book Down!Great Book!.......2005-10-13

Dougal Dixon has written a wonderful book with detailed
discriptions suited for both the beginner and those already into Geology. This book is a perfect learning tool for all ages.
Perfect for education as well as recreational activilties.
I highly recommmend this intellegent, entertaining and well
    written book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for the Beginning Geologist.......2004-08-07

This is a wonderful book for the beginning geologist or anyone interested in earth sciences. It presents the fundamental concepts of geology in a way that is accessible to the non-specialist, but without being oversimplified or condescending. It's full of lots of great pictures, and the best part of the book is the section where it tells you how to collect and label specimens of rock yourself. People of any age interested in science, especially go out and get grubby do it yourself science, will find this book an excellent addition to their libraries.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book for the beginner.......2000-07-05

I have the habit of buying anything with geology, paleontology, history, etc. in the title, sometimes without thought to where I'm at with my knowledge base. This was one of those times! The book is a lovely, well illustrated, practical guide to geology for the beginner. Much of what the authors dedicate a single paragraph or page to I have had whole courses in already, so needless to say, I was not quite as enthused over the material as a new comer to the field might be. Certainly for the beginner, especially the Junior High natural science enthusiast, this would be a wonderful gift. It might even make a good text for a high school natual science course, as it covers considerable information on the earth sciences. I plan on giving my copy to a close friend with children interested in these subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Good for beginners........1999-05-16

Today we were at 12000 feet looking into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and we decided we needed a book. Any book. A good book. A book that keeps you reading. The Practical Geologist was just the book! We read all night, and the night's not over yet! We learned about geology, and also came a little closer to God. I highly recommend it! p.s. I used to work for Borders.

    5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2007-01-11

Very practical. A essential tool for field trips for students of geology and postgraduate or enthusiasts of sedimentology

5 out of 5 stars Superb introduction to sedimentary rocks and structures........2006-09-08

This book is one of the best introductions to sedimentary rocks and their structures that I have come across in 25 years.
It begins with a section on the structures found in sedimentary rocks. The diagrams are clear, concise, and very well explained. The photographs that go with them are among the best I've seen for demonstrating sedimentary structures. They are almost professional in their quality, and the features you are meant to see are actually visible in the photos (no 'eye of faith' required, unlike some other textbooks).
The rest of the book is divided into chapters dealing with each group of sedimentary rocks in turn. Ironstones, conglomerates, evaporites, limestones: you name it, it's in there. Again, the diagrams and photographs are faultless.
Finally, the book finishes with a section on how to interpret sedimentary structures in the field.
If only this book had been available when I was an undergraduate! I would thoroughly recommend this book to any undergraduate (or even post-graduate) geology student as the first thing to pack in their bag before setting off on field work.
As a final thought for geology students, the University of Southampton (where Dr. Stow works) has a superb website on the geology of the south coast of England. If you like the book, you'll love the website.

An excellent science or study text for young adults, especially recommended for high school library collections.

The words "field guide" imply a book that can be carried in the field to identify features (e.g. "Audubon Field Guide" series). A looser interpretation would be a manual that teaches people to interpret features in the field (e.g. Robert Compton's classic "Geology in the Field"). David Lambert's "The Field Guide to Geology" is neither. It is a simple introduction to geology accompanied by many drawings and diagrams. The book is useful for high school earth science students and younger, but any basic college-level physical geology text provides a more thorough introduction to geology -- with more sophisticated graphics, too.

So, if you want a snapshot of important concepts in basic physical geology, take a look at "Field Guide to Geology" or search in Wikipedia under "Geology." If you want a detailed introduction, take a look at an introductory-level college physical or historical (for fossils) geology textbook. If you want a true field guide, there are many good series such as the Audubon or Peterson series.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book........2002-11-26

As a student in engineering geology, I found this book to be
a very good reference but with no in-depth reading. For the novice, I would recommend
this to see if you're interested in the field of geology; but for an intermediate
or advanced geology enthusiast, I would recommend a more scientific book.

There are no photographs but rather drawings of the various
components of geology. The artist did well, but nothing can amount to the incredible
display of mass wasting, or the delicate detail of Micas

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent guide for beginning geology students........1997-11-11

This is an excellent guide for beginning geology students and a very good review for more advanced students. Should be on all geologist's shelves.

            Book Description

Manganese mineralization is diverse in occurrence, origin, mineralogy and geochemistry. These variations reflect differences in the processes of formation and depositional environments, which in turn are a response to changes in the land - ocean - atmosphere system over geological time. As such, manganese deposits can act as markers of major events in the dynamic evolution of the Earth's surface. Modern manganese accumulations provide insights into key factors controlling manganese deposition that cannot readily be determined from examination of ancient ores. A knowledge of oceanic currents, ocean chemistry or small-scale variation in physicochemcal patterns of recent basins, for example, may extend our understanding of depositional processes in the past. Equally, the study of Precambrian deposits not only elucidates ancient mechanisms of manganese metallogenesis, but also helps to unravel the impact of comprehensive environmental changes on metal deposition on a scale not realised in younger geological times. The volume includes a review of the range of terrestrial Mn deposits and their relative abundance through geological time. This is followed by six papers on Precambrian deposits that cover the manner in which Mn mineralization reflects changes in planetary and environmentalchemistry. Ten papers on Cenozoic deposits show the wide diversity of genetic types of the younger deposits, from nodules, crusts and stratabound layers, todeposits precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. Five papers in the last section consider the geochemistry and mineralogy of Mn deposits. Experimental and modelling approaches to Mn geochemistry and mineralogy can further aid our understanding of the formational and depositional processes involved and thereby ourinterpretation of deposit metallogenesis.
