unique book by two applied statisticians.......2000-08-10
Ed Korn and Barry Graubard are two statisticians in the health industry with strong statistical training. This is a very practical and specialized book which deals strictly with health surveys. Several national surveys are discussed. Many of the standard survey sampling topics including stratified random sampling and sampling proportional to size are covered. In addition modern ways for estimating variances including jackknife, balanced half-sample replication and bootstrap are covered. Beyond the standard topics there are topics in survival analysis that are included. Other practical issues such as weighted versus unweighted estimates and the use of imputation methods are included. They also include many exercises at the end of the chapters to make the book suitable for a course on the subject. Whole chapters are dedicated to interesting and unique topics such as "Analysis of Longitudinal Surveys", Chapter 7, "Analyses using Multiple Surveys", Chapter 8, and "Population-Based Case-Control Studies", Chapter 9. Appendix A gives detailed descriptions of the surveys analyzed in the book. It also contains a wealth of useful references from teh statistical literature. A good book for practitioners which does not require very high level mathematics.
Analysis of Health Surveys.......2000-06-03
This is a very good textbook. There is no complex mathematcis, and a lot of real examples and exercises can help readers to understand the materials covered in the book. But it is too simple if it is used as a professional reference. It tries to cover basic survey methodology, weighting, variance estimation, cross-sectional analyses, longitudinal surveys and case-control studies in only such a small book (less than 400 pages). Definately, it can not touch advanced parts of these areas. Anyway, it is very good for college students. You can learn a lot of very interesting ideas though this book even you do not have any knowledge about survey sampling and biostatistics.

Great reference text.......2006-02-27
This text is a great reference for everything from basic analysis to more advanced topics like longitudinal and time-to-event data. The book is well-written with relevant, current examples. If I had to choose one reference book, this would be it because of its depth and breadth of content (at the intermediate level).
From an M.D.'s perspective taking a Masters Degree in Stats.......2002-07-10
This was a terrible book. To say that it is user unfriendly is an understatement. It is wordy and too long, furthermore, it doesn't teach you what you need to know. It is difficult to reference things (for example, try looking up sensitivity in the index!) and the writing is very tangential. This is not a good book if you are just starting out. I would not receommend it.
nice intermediate level text in biostatistics.......2000-06-28
The authors write well and cover most of the important topics very thoroughly. They motivate the subject very well with a number of important and "real world" examples in the first chapter.
A unique feature is its detailed coverage of sample size determination in a number of contexts.
The book was published in 1993 which is not recent enough to cover advances in meta analysis, resampling, Bayesian Hierarchical Models (with Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods) and frailty models. At least bootstrap methods and meta analyses are mentioned in the book.
Noteworthy are the full chapters on multiple comparison problems and discriminant analysis. This is an excellent reference book for biostatisticians.

Book Description
Advances in genomics are expected to play a central role in medicine and public health in the future by providing a genetic basis for disease prediction and prevention. The transplantation of human gene discoveries into meaningful actions to improve health and prevent disease depends on scientific information from multiple disciplines, including epidemiology. This book describes the important role that epidemiologic methods play in the continuum from gene discovery to the development and application of genetic tests. It proceeds systematically from the fundamentals of genome technology and gene discovery, to epidemiologic approaches to gene characterization in the population, to the evaluation of genetic tests and their use in health services. These methodologic approaches are then illustrated with several disease-specific case studies. The book provides a scientific foundation that will help researchers, policy makers, and practitioners integrate genomics into medical and public health practice.

Book Description
More and more frequently, clinical trials include the evaluation of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), yet many investigators remain unaware of the unique measurement and analysis issues associated with the assessment of HRQoL. At the end of a study, clinicians and statisticians often face challenging and sometimes insurmountable analytic problems. Design and Analysis of Quality of Life Studies in Clinical Trials details these issues and presents a range of solutions. Written from the author's extensive experience in the field, it focuses on the very specific features of QoL data: its longitudinal nature, multidimensionality, and the problem of missing data. The author uses three real clinical trials throughout her discussions to illustrate practical implementation of the strategies and analytic methods presented. As Quality of Life becomes an increasingly important aspect of clinical trials, it becomes essential for clinicians, statisticians, and designers of these studies to understand and meet the challenges this kind of data present. In this book, SAS and S-PLUS programs, checklists, numerous figures, and a clear, concise presentation combine to provide readers with the tools and skills they need to successfully design, conduct, analyze, and report their own studies.
Customer Reviews:
qol and missing data for statisticians.......2002-08-22
This is really the first really good book for statisticians on quality of life issues and methods with authoritative references. The author provides practical advice for qol studies in a clinical trials setting and provides sage advice on design of the study. Actual quality of life surveys are discussed and the importance of defining objectives is emphasized. Some real cancer trials are discussed and used as examples throughout the book. There is detailed treatment of missing data and how to deal with it including the latest statistical methodology. Much of the methodological development could apply to hard endpoints as well as qol endpoints.
I got this book and a good taste of its contents in a short course presented by the author at the Joint Statistical meetings in New York in August 2002. The only drawback of the book is that it does not spend much time on the issue of instrument validation. Also the author's experience is with cancer trials in an academic setting. The issues related to conducting qol surveys for a manufacturer that needs labeling or FDA approval efficacy and safety approvals is a prospective that I would like to see but the author does not have.
Excellent examples illustrated in SAS and SPlus.

Book Description
International cooperation has developed rapidly on a wide range of policy areas in the last decades. National governments have learned to look across national borders in order to improve their policy systems, as in the case of health care, the subject of this book. There is a need to compare policy results, and therefore international comparison of statistical data is of great importance.
For decades, international organisations like OECD and WHO have collected and distributed statistical information of member states in order to describe developments within these countries. However, comparability across countries has always been problematic. The task of international comparison of statistical data has only reluctantly been adopted due to difficulties caused by differences in definition and methods of data collection.
In this book a method is presented for the advancement of international comparison of health care. Starting points are the determination of the boundaries of national health care systems and the activities that take place within these boundaries.
This book is meant for all those working in the international health care field or interested in international comparison, who want to be aware of the pitfalls of international comparison and who want to learn, from the described experiences, how to solve problems of comparability.

Book Description
Let this down-to-earth book be your guide to the statistical integrity of your work. Without relying on the detailed and complex mathematical explanations found in many other statistical texts, Principles of Experimental Design for the Life Sciences teaches how to design, conduct, and interpret top-notch life science studies. Learn about the planning of biomedical studies, the principles of statistical design, sample size estimation, common designs in biological experiments, sequential clinical trials, high dimensional designs and process optimization, and the correspondence between objectives, design, and analysis. Each of these important topics is presented in an understandable and non-technical manner, free of statistical jargon and formulas. Written by a biostatistical consultant with 25 years of experience, Principles of Experimental Design for the Life Sciences is filled with real-life examples from the author's work that you can quickly and easily apply to your own. These examples illustrate the main concepts of experimental design and cover a broad range of application areas in both clinical and nonclinical research. With this one innovative, helpful book you can improve your understanding of statistics, enhance your confidence in your results, and, at long last, shake off those statistical shackles!
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful Guide for Designing Research Studies.......2000-09-06
This slim volume offers a great overview for how to design experimental research studies for the life sciences. It is relatively light on mathmatical formulas, but emphasizes the rational step by step approach one needs to take to plan out a study that will avoid the pitfalls of experimental design (or lack thereof) that can spell disaster for the researcher. The writing is understandable and straight forward. A number of practical examples are presented throughout the book which facilitate an understanding of the concepts presented. One key area which I especially appreciated was Selwyn's discusion of Power from the standpoint of sample size and how this can influence the selection of a particular experimental design.
In summary, this is an excellent text for classes which study scientific methods and design in the life sciences, and a good companion for a standard statistics text book. It is also great for investigators who want to conduct their research in a scientifically sound and efficient manner.
