Customer Reviews:
What a boring book.......2006-05-17
What a boring book. Desciptions are too long, emotionless, as though seen by an outside person and not lived as the writter would like to think she is. It's a book written by a scared and obsessed person who is still afraid to live. She seems to be outerly lost and unprepared for living an everyday life full of adventures, changes, death, unhappiness, impermanece, joy, violence, love,etc...after all these analyses and boring lines she still does not seem to have understood the message!
A tapestry of home for everyone.......2003-10-04
Barbara Gates, Co-Editor of Inquiring Mind, a Buddhist journal has woven an intricate and warm shawl we can all wrap ourselves in and settle into our homes. She shows what it means to really live in a place, deeply connected to everyone and everything around us.
A Journey Worth Taking through Heart, House and Neighborhood.......2003-09-10
Already Home: A Topography of Spirit, by Barbara Gates, is a risk-taking work that criss-crosses genres of geology, spirituality, autobiography and history to tell the story of one woman's discovery of "home' in all its dimensions. Spurred by a sense of not being fully at home in her own mortal being, house and community, Gates takes us along as she discovers her Berkeley, California neighborhood in its present and past incarnations. She balances and connects her spiritual travels with concrete adventures down alleyways, through garbages dumps and into the Department of Vital Statistics. Gates' rich prose let me hear the spring hidden by the factory, see the homeless neighbor sleeping in Gate's car and feel the fear and joy of opening your heart.
Seize the Moment.......2003-08-20
Berkeley California writer/resident Barbara Gates has given her readers an insider¹s view of her multi-layered, multi-ethnic neighborhood in her sweetly revealing memoir. Already Home is a social, historic exploration of her hood, beautifully written in a journalistic style that explains the migration of communities (flora and fauna, people, businesses and social movements), and celebrates the fundamental nature of extended family and home. Liberally intertwining Eastern philosophy with a dose of Buddhist-Jewish "chutzpah", Barbara inspires readers to stop, look, seize the moment, live more fully and honor the life that is around you.
"Home" has many meanings.......2003-08-08
This is a lovely book - part memoir, part reflection on what it is to live in a place where others have been before us. On one level, it is Barbara's own story and that of her neighborhood in Berkeley - diagnosed with breast cancer she fears, not so much her own death, but leaving her 5-year-old motherless. Barbara begins investigating her own house and neighborhood, her neighbors, the people who lived in her house before her, the succession of businesses since Gold Rush times, and even the Native Americans. She sees herself as part of the succession of people who have lived - and died - in this one place. On another level, it is the story of how one connects with a larger sense of belonging, membership in the human race, by looking at the concrete details of where we live and the ordinary people whose lives make up the present and the history of one's own house, block, neighborhood. Barbara brings a Buddhist sensibility to all this, but as a source of insight added to her own reflections - readers with Buddhist sympathies will appreciate the dharmic resonances, but those without will not, I think, read this as a Buddhist tract, but as a personal reflection. It's also beautifully written, so that we get a concrete feel for the streets she walks, the dog who walks with her, the homeless neighbor...I'll never see my neighborhood, and my 1920s-era house, with its traces of the people who have lived in it, painted it, and remodeled it over the years in quite the same way.

Got the wrong book.......2005-09-22
Actually I intended to order another book "Ramp Plans: Learn How to Build Vert Street Mini Launch and Bowls (2000 Edition)", but by mistake seem to have ordered this one instead without realising it before it arrived. Must be my mistake where as I should have noticed this in the confirmation email I got. Still, better luck next time...

What Not to Wear
from one of fashion's

stylish women ...

Customer Reviews:
Want casual, look elsewhere.......2007-10-15
Many of the reviews seem to be of women wanting something a bit more casual and "10 piece wardrobe" in it's approach to elegance, if so...this is NOT the book for you. Pick another title.
The focus and intent of this book is aimed at how to dress semi-to-fully formal from an era were almost every woman wore white gloves as basic clothes and almost nobody (including kids) wore gym shoes outside of a gym. This is not to say the book is "outdated" by any means, it's to say that "What Not To Wear" type casualness (it's extremely casual compared to the book's focus) is not the goal here.
Madame Dariaux's aims can work in the present time for a woman who wants to know how to dress formally or appropriately for more formal occasions (ie weddings, lunches at fancy eateries, parties, and the like) and/or a woman who likes a more "retro" style of dress in her daily life. It's full of useful information about garments and accessories that many women no longer wear and subsequently have no idea of how to wear now. If you purchase this book with these things in mind, you won't be at all disappointed or feel it's outdated. Mme Dariaux is NOT coming from a world where "casual Fridays" existed.
I give this book only 4 stars because of the extremely limited colour schemes suggested....pastels with neutrals as the base. Most women who buy this book will NOT find the pastel palette flattering to them. The palette she gives emphasis (pastel) probably would suit an ashe blonde without much problem, any darker than that and it starts getting iffy. For Black women of almost any shade, the colour scheme will be the least flattering (as an earlier poster mentioned).
A bit dated...needs to be updated.......2007-08-20
I enjoyed the "what not to wear" parts of the book. Although I found it to be incredibly dated. In order to be elegant she has you changing your clothes 5 to 6 times a day. Different outfits for 9,1,3,6,7,8 and 10 p.m. And stocking with seams...hmmmm Do they still sell these? There is some good advice but this book truly needs an update plus if you are not a city dweller spending weekends in the country a lot of this book will not be for you.
A Must read for every woman of evry age!.......2007-08-13
Every mother should give a copy to their daugthers when they graduate college and begin their careers! It should be re-read every 5 years to re-enforce the wonderful concepts and remind us of the parts we may have forgot! As a career woman it her 40's who is moving up the corporate ladder, it has been an wonder source for sharpering my image! Coco Channel said, 'Dress shabbily and they noticce the dress; dress impecibly and they notice the woman.' This book will help all woman be noticed!
Grace and Style are Always in Fashion.......2007-08-10
This book takes hints from days past to give you a guide on being cool, calm and collected. I imagine a Dita Von Teese-type woman when it comes to this book, and I would love to be like this.
This book has become an easy gift for friends -- one that will be appreciated by most any woman who values decorum and class.
Nothing we don't already know !.......2007-08-07
Treat it as fun because it doesn't tell you anything that you don't already know about common sense and the sense of proportion. But it's ideal for tossing around the house and goes well with your Tiffany's publications collection because they have kind of the same colour scheme!

Chronicles 17-year-old Clara's struggle to live up to her musical potential yet avoid the pressure of the cutthroat world of young musicians.
Seveven teen-year-old Clara Lorenzo has it all: a great family, friends, Marshall-her love interest waiting in the wings. And to top it all off, she is a brilliant pianist, on her way to a career doing what she loves best.
But does she? Sometimes Clara gets tired of constantly performing. She knows that her ability is more skill than passion. But if she stopped playing, her family would be heartbroken. Marshall would never understand.
Clara must decide whether she can risk giving up a world where her forte is revered for one unfamiliar and uncertain.
Customer Reviews:
An engaging and generally fantastic book.......2002-03-20
I must say, I really could not put this book down. It paints a beautiful picture of the conflicts that consume Clara Lorenzo, the 17 year old piano prodigy. She is competing in the Nicklaus competition, in which first prize is a 4 year scholarship to Juilliard. A fall in ballet practice brings her to realize that she does not truly love piano, despite daily three hour practices.
Even non-musical people can understand and even relate to this book, because it conveys inner conflict and finding one's true self so flawlessly. Teens will love this book for its accurate description of parental pressure and adults will better understand the trials and tribulations of growing up after reading it.
Provides no easy answers.......2001-08-17
Clara's future has been determined most of her short life: as a talented pianist, she is certain to have a sterling career as an accomplished musician. But does she love playing the best, and does she want to continue to give up pleasures for work? This provides no easy answers as Clara makes her decisions about the future.
A Gift For Piano.......2001-02-21
Have you ever wanted to be the best at something so badly that you would do almost anything to make it happen? This type of obsession happens in the novel, Broken Chords, by Barbara Snow Gilbert. Clara Lorenzo had an amazing gift for playing the piano. Her talent being discovered at a very young age, Clara's parents had done everything they could to see that Clara advanced as far as she could. Though Clara loved piano and was practicing endlessly for the upcoming Nicklaus competition, she also had a strong love for ballet and was in "The Nutcracker." Her parents did not approve of this; they wanted her to spend all of her time practicing piano. Clara sneaks off to ballet, and was getting away with it until she had an accident and hurt her wrist. She knew her parents would be extremely mad if they found out what she did, so she lied to the doctor, said her wrist was fine. She began practicing day and night for her piano competition. Only Clara seems to know the truth about her injury, and it is causing her a lot of pain to try to be the best. Her parents push Clara so hard because she has the chancde to get into Julliard if she wins this competition. While Clara wants this, she wants more to be a normal teenager, instead of having to play piano for six hours a day. Clara misses the non-stressful atmosphere of her ballet world, instead of the hectic one of piano. Clara discovers that she loves ballet more than piano and could not spend her life doing something just to please others, no matter how talented she was. This was a great story that is sure to be a fan of music lovers, or anyone who would just like to read a really good book.
