Great for anyone planning to visit Southwest to view native cacti. Not a gardening book, so do not expect growing information. If you love the desert, just 5 minutes of reading this book over coffee takes you there....

Book Description

The deserts of the American Southwest boast a remarkable diversity of drought-tolerant plant life, including many species found nowhere else on earth. And no group says "desert" quite like cacti. Their prickly nature notwithstanding, cacti and the desert habitats in which they reside are especially fragile. Indeed, Saguaro National Park and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument were established primarily to protect the largest concentrations of these respective species. Others, such as the Pima pineapple cactus, are less conspicuous but also more rare and in need of special protection and conservation. In Cacti of the Desert Southwest, botanist Meg Quinn describes eighty-six of the most significant cacti found in the Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Mojave deserts. For ease of identification, all are depicted in color photographs and those that bloom are shown in full flower. 86 color photographs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A decent field guide to southwestern cacti.......2003-07-25

While the style of this book is relatively light and informal, the book does a very good job of presenting all the species of cacti in the southwestern United States and the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts of Mexico. The cacti are organized by scientific name, but common names are given as well. Identification information and short natural history information is presented for every cactus. The large, visually appealing color photos show enough of the plants to allow for easy identification. This book has only two major drawbacks. First, it only provides written descriptions of the cacti's ranges, whereas maps would have been more useful. Second, the regions covered by this book seem to be fairly nebulous; it is unclear as to exactly which parts of the United States and Mexico are fully represented. Nonetheless, this book serves as a very good field guide for anyone interested in cacti.

      Book Description

In Wild Cactus, Rose Houk writes an illuminating account of these intriguing plants--exploring not only natural history secrets, but Native American folklore, ancient culinary and medicinal uses, and current conservation issues as well.

The breathtaking photographs in this volume, taken by nature photographer George Huey, richly illustrate the jewel-like splendor and exotic drama of the wild cactus. Huey traveled throughout the American Southwest, Baja California, and mainland Mexico to capture their luxuriant flowers and fruit, their impressive armor of spines, and the often surreal arid landscape where they can be found. From the wine-red flower of the claretcup cactus to acres of saguaro forest in the Sonoran Desert, from a curve-bill thrasher tucked into the spines of a cholla to a desert tortoise eating the pink fat buds of a prickly pear, Huey's portraits will entrance anyone interested in the unusual beauty of the desert realm.

Did you know that cacti have "personality"! A SMILE is what you'll get every time you pick up this gem - along with something new you've learned about our American deserts! It's a delightfully fun example of Jim Willoughby's artistic sense of humor in colaboration with wife, Sue. It's a great gift for locals and visitors to the southwest. I send it as a thank you gift to collectors of my husband's desert landscape paintings and hear back that it's enjoyed by the whole family!

I bought this book at the museum gift shop at the White Sands Nat'l. Monument and enjoyed every moment of reading! My husband and I moved to Alamogordo, NM from Laramie, WY 1 1/2 years ago and did not know what the cacti were. Your book helped tremendously! Now we can pick out quite a few on our travels. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! Chris Mendoza

              Book Description

Distinguished by its slender vertical branches, which resemble the tubes of a pipe organ, and growing to the imposing height of 15 to more than 30 feet, it's obvious how the organ pipe cactus got its name. In the United States, these spectacular and intriguing plants are found exclusively in a small area of the Sonoran Desert in the southwestern corner of Arizona. With a landscape marked by sharp, rocky slopes and daytime highs in the summer reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit, the region is inhospitable for most ordinary life, whether plant or animal. But the organ pipe cactus is far from ordinary. Although it is the most common columnar cactus, it is so unusual in the United States that it is only one of three cacti to have a national preserve established to protect it. In this regard, it joins a select group of plants—including Joshua trees, redwoods, and sequoias—upon which that honor has been conferred. In this beautifully illustrated, large-format book, David Yetman provides an in-depth and comprehensive look at these intriguing and picturesque plants that most Americans will never have the opportunity to see. Chapters explore their ethnobotanical uses, their habitat, their distribution, and special conditions required for their germination, establishment, growth, and survival. Yetman also places the organ pipe in perspective as a member of a genus with at least twenty-three species, ranging from the prostrate Stenocereus eruca of Baja California to the 50-foot high giant S. chacalapensis of the coast of Oaxaca.

                Book Description

A classic reference book that has been used by millions all over the world, Roget's International Thesaurus is the product of more than a century and a half of continuous expansion, reorganization, and improvement. Today, this book is not only the most time-tested and bestselling thesaurus ever, but, newly revised, it is also the most up-to-dateand comprehensive reflection of theEnglish language as it is currently used.

The revolutionary achievement of Dr. Peter Mark Roget's first edition in 1852 was the development of a brand-new principle: the arrangement of words and phrases according to their meanings. Dr. Roget's system brings together in one place all the terms associated with a single thought or concept; it allows a wide-ranging survey of language within a book of relatively modest size, without the space-consuming repetitions that so severely limit the scope of thesauruses arranged in a dictionary format with A-to-Z entries. This brilliant organization makes Roget's International Thesaurus both the most efficient word finder and a cutting-edge aid in stimulating thought, organizing ideas, and writing and speaking more clearly and effectively.

This revised and updated sixth edition features thousands of new words and phrases, including the newest slang words and expressions that color and inform everyday language. At the same time, it retains all of the hallmarks that have made Roget's international Thesaurus an enduring classic:

Generations of students, writers, editors, and speakers have made Roget's the most popular word reference book next to the dictionary. Continuing a legacy that dates back more than 150 years, Roget's International Thesaurus is an indispensable work for everyone who wants to use the English language with clarity and precision.

Radical departure from the Roget's of the past. Referencing is much more advanced and inclusive. I dig it!

                5 out of 5 stars Awesome size!.......2007-07-14

This edition is twice as large as my previous years old edition. Perhaps I will find twice as many suggestions for the word I am looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!!!.......2007-04-24

Before buying this product I searched high and low through Amazon comparing thesauruses and reading reviews. I finally came to this one and bought it. I am really pleased I did.

I remember one complaint from reviewers was having to page from the back of the book to the front, basically a two step process to find the word you want. But this enhances only the power and in depth the book offers.

I love this thesaurus and highly recommend it to others who love to write stories, papers, etc and want to expand their vocabulary.

                4 out of 5 stars Roget's Int........2007-03-25

Roget's Int. Thesaurus is a quite comprehensive and clear source for words and their usages( ,however, it doesn't have any sample sentences for the usage; it just puts the words into groups generally; for ex: for "enmity", you can see nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives releated to this general word... ) ; but it is a bit different from a normal thesaurus like Oxford Thesaurus in terms of the general order... What I mean is that words are presented in some categories like "birth, eating, sex, lamentation, badness" And moreover, these categories are in fifteen classes.. There are 1075 categories and fifteen classes in which the words are grouped... That means, you have to know the category of the word (therefore its meaning..) you want to search for its synonyms beforehand... so that makes it a bit difficult to use the thesaurus... But may be, this is only a problem for non-native speakers of English... But the index part at the end can be a help for this problem...

                5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-01-30

I needed an upgrade from my old Thesaurus, and wanted one that was superior to any others I've seen. When I got this one in the mail, I couldn't believe how thick the book was (thicker than a lot of dictionaries I've seen). It's chock full of information, user-friendly, and has way more words and references than other Thesaurus' I've seen. This one is worth keeping and even passing down to others.

                  5 out of 5 stars huntington's drama .......2007-09-02

As a medical professional, this mysterious and horrifying disease has always fascinated me. This book does an excellent job exploring the misleading symptoms and the heartbreaking realities of it. Plus it was a real page turner. I am anxiously awaiting the 2nd one.

4 out of 5 stars The full story is told in two novels - not just one........2006-08-26

Could I Have This Dance? is an interesting book about one woman's willingness to look past childhood hurts to find an answer to a medical mystery. But the full story arc, which takes shape in this book, only reaches resolution in the follow-up novel, For The Rest Of My Life.

Why is that important to note? Because the full answers don't come until the second book. You'll finish reading this one and still have questions that can only be answered by the next book. Neat marketing trick, sure, but very frustrating to readers.

                  4 out of 5 stars Do A Little Dance.......2006-03-03

Could I Have This Dance? focuses on one woman's struggle between her past and her future, her heart and her head, and her Christian walk and the distractions of medical life. The story weaves Claire McCall's demanding hospital experience together with her small-town slower-paced upbringing, and illustrates clearly the turmoil she undergoes in her relationship with her family, her denial and then acceptance of Huntington's disease, and her ambivalent feelings toward two young men in her life.

The story is a fast-paced medical thriller, detailing interesting particulars about hospital procedures and rare diseases. However, the tale behind the medical scene deals with Claire's spiritual struggles, her character development from the purpose-driven M.D. who despises her father to a fuller woman with a developing love for both her earthly father and her Heavenly one. This maturity of Claire's nature makes it easy for the reader to identify more closely with the story as a whole.

However, certain sections of the book must work harder to fall into the story's rhythm, and consequently stand out as being unnecessary, or necessary, but in need of more development. When Claire first meets Brett Daniels at the beach, the story changes from an involved tale of Claire's struggle to remain in the competitive medical pyramid to a scene from a chick-lit novel - beautiful toned and tan female meets hard-muscled blonde life-guard type and a long time of commitment to her fiance flies out the window after one meeting with another man who carries on a normal conversation with her.

In spite of these scenes, though, the book does well, and the story remains well worth the read.

                  4 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2004-08-17

I was very drawn into this book.
I am not a "reader" but wanted something light, educating and interesting and this was it!
As I read this book, my sister was in the hospital so I was more drawn into the life of Claire as a resident and found unbelievable Godly interventions. While reading something in the book, my sister happened to be going thru similiar situations.
My only discontent was the ending of the story.
It was out of place and very strange.
I did learn so much about things I knew nothing about (Huntingtons and the life of a new resident )
I have strongly recommended the book to many of the nurses I encountered while reading the book.
                  Enjoy!!

                  2 out of 5 stars Somewhat contrived.......2004-05-18

The book is interesting and I did finish it, but I would not read the sequel. Does the sequel reveal whether Claire has the HD gene? I don't know and don't really care.

This book does a good job of portraying Huntington's Disease, but many things are just not believable: Why would a woman as smart as Claire, studying to become a doctor, tops in her class, take so long to figure out what is wrong with her father? Why would she give any credence to a superstitious belief in a "curse"? Why would a woman as smart as Claire get so involved with a fellow intern whom she hardly knows?

The characters are mostly one dimensional; there's the stereotypical rivalry between the only two women in the residency program; there's Claire's whiny fiance and the "hunky" fellow intern. The plot reminded me a lot of the Grace Livingston Hill books I used to read in the 40's and 50's: beautiful, smart, woman, torn between two suitors. There's not much substance here.

There is one issue here that I often see in discussions about Huntington's. When Claire believes her father's behavior is caused by alcholism, she wants nothing to do with him. When she discovers that his bad behavior is because of Huntington's she forgives him. Why?
