Sometimes you're glad when you're asked by Amazon to review a book - in some cases due to the fact that they stink, in others because you've purchased something that you really feel that you can recommend to others. This book belongs in the second category.

The Triathlete's Guide to Run Training is simply the most comprehensive and well structured, easy-to-read, hands-on book about running that I've ever seen (and believe me, as a triathlete I've gone through everything from Posetech to ChiRunning in my quest for reduced run times).

The book will take you through Technique (the actual physics of running, i.e., where does all that energy go that you spend on the track?, how to reduce energy waste and maximize forward propulsion, etc.), Training (planning, bricks, etc.), Preparations, and finally, Racing. The way it's done makes you understand just how good Mierke must be as a coach: everything is short, crisp and to the point.

If you're training by yourself, there are plenty of drills in the book that will take you a long way towards better running efficiency. If you're a coach, there's a lot of stuff from basic to advanced that you can use in your coaching. If you're training with a coach, give him the book and ask him to use it when coaching you - I did and the result has been remarkable: not only do I run faster, I run almost effortlessly after hard biking, and - moreover - I enjoy my running even during races. The only thing that has made that much of a difference for my racing is Total Immersion Swimming (which, by the way, also focuses on efficiency rather than raw power).

In short: highly recommendable book for anyone who's interested in running faster and more efficient (is there anyone who doesn't?). Extra plus for the integration of running into biking specifically and triathlon in general.

Excellent resource for serious traithletes and amateur atheletes alike. I purchased this book for my triathlete husband and one of his daughters who is a runner. Although he majored in physical education and has been an active athlete, teacher, and trainer himself all his life, this book has still helped him to improve his running ability. He now also owns a Seiko metronome and making good use of it with his indoor training on our treadmill. My husband is now 69 and still a winning triathlete!

As a triathlete going on my 15th season, I have seen most of the stuff out there. This book is great in that it starts by teaching running technique, which most people ignore. Sure we all know technique is crucial in swimming, but it is in running as well. The author also has a video on his "Evolution" run technique which I have on order.

He claims to have achieved significant efficiency and hence speed improvements in even long-time elite runners, and I believe it. Look at it it this way - you can spend $1000 on race wheels and gain 30secs, or spend a few dollars on this book and/or video and gain more time through efficiency increases.

He also points out that most running injuries are caused by poor technique, and I agree completely. If you have a nagging injury, fix your technique. I have seen this work myself on many runners - try it.

A wonderful bonus is that this book contains one of the best summaries of eating to get and stay lean that I have seen. An entire chpater is devoted to this, and makes the book well worth it if you are just trying to figure out how to lose weight.

This is a worthy and high return on investment book for any triathlete.

Rick does a great job with all his travel materials and this is no exception. The book can definitely be a lifesaver when trying to communicate. There is good effort on Rick's part to get the phrases and structure passable without getting bogged down in grammar. Like Rick says, "you will be stringing together words in caveman like language in no time." He also has some fun stuff in the book that will make you laugh. I paricularly liked the descriptions for the quantities of alcohol- from a pint to a barrel he has you covered!

We have been using Rick Steve's books for many years. This latest phrase book is the best ever. An especially important section is the part on opposites which has proved very useful. It is organized very well and we would not be without it on our trips to Italy.

Any book that tells you how to say "May i give you a back massage" and "I dont have any diseases" in three different languages is definatly worth buying it. Also it has the basics and maybe the more useful phrases like "where is the bathroom" "check please" and the like.

I bought this book because of the reviews I read and it lived up to the hype. It came in handy in both routine and emergency situations - particularly when I had left my passport, money and credit cards on a train in Italy and had to communicate to the stationmaster in Genoa!

This books is great. It has many handy phrases that make traveling in Europe easier. Contrary to what most people believe, not everyone in other countries speak English. If you are the adventurous type and like to explore on your own, knowing some phrases to navigate the area is really useful.

I purchased additional copies of this book for a few friends that were traveling as well.

This book is full of practical advice and essential information that kept me from making some mistakes on our vaction this summer. Though I probably won't return to Europe for a few years, this book will stay in my bookshelves for future reference. I have always enjoyed Rick Steves' travel shows because of his down-to-earth, straight-forward style. The book follows that pattern perfectly. I highly recommend this book to any European travel novice.

This is one of my best purchases in Amazon, it's amazing how good is this book. It's very practical for any traveler around the world, it has detailed content in subjects like: what to tell to italian men if they are bothering you (and as a woman... this can become very handy!) or everything you need to say in a medical emergency or how to enjoy the food in a restaurant (because you can understand now the menu). I really recommend this book if you are looking for a better experience in your trips or if you are learning a foreign language (like me). Greetings from Mexico. Nayeli

Advice from someone who knows what she's talking about!.......1999-07-26

Considering that there is such an enormous godless vacuum for Asian-American voices in ANY medium, and that most novels about 'Asians' are written by non-Asians, just being published earns 'American Dragons' three stars. Notice I gave it _only_ three stars? When I first saw this book at the Berekeley public library I snatched it up quick thinking "Wow! A book of all Asian-Americans writing about being Asian-American? This is sooo cool!" And was quickly disappointed. The writing was sub-par and a lot of the stories revealed internalized anti-Asian sentiments and stereotypes. IF THESE AUTHORS WERE NOT ASIAN-AMERICAN THEIR STORIES WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED. That is not to say that the writing is 'terrible'. As a collection, I think it is WONDERFUL that such a wide array of Asian-American viewpoints and experiences have the opportunity to be shared with such a wide audience. I encourage all Asian-Americans to speak of their experiences and in that respect, this book is a worthwhile endeavor. Also, the problems I have with 'American Dragons' are the same problems I have with many other Asian-American writings which share the same shortcomings (namely political correctness, low writing quality, extremely soft and non-informed stances on society and race, exotification of self, internalized racism, and a somewhat cliche title for starters). HOWEVER-- As far as being a political statement this is not something that I'd label a 'boat rocker'. Politically speaking, I would rate the authors/pieces as a 3 overall. On a political scale of 1-10, 1 being 'I shop at the Gap. I like MTV. If I pretend like I don't see, maybe my problems will go away.' and 10 being 'Arrgh! I am an enraged revolutionary! Down with the hegemony!' Considering the book is edited by Laurence Yep (I really enjoy his writing) and is something of a watershed for Asian-American youth literature, it is a let-down. The best adjective to describe 'American Dragons' as a whole is 'lukewarm' (leaning towards cold). Another description is 'bland'. A third is 'extra mild, hold the revolution' This book was obviously meant to be an inocuous bookshelf companion for teens. And there's nothing necessarily wrong with that. But considering there are so few outlets and resources for Asian-American youth I would have hoped for something that packed more punch. My biggest gripe with this compilation is that it attempts to 'speak of the 'Asian-American' experience' so to speak. But the field of writers it draws upon is too narrow and it holds back, ultimately failing in its purpose. As far as I recall, there are no accounts or viewpoints of 'urban life', teen violence, homosexuality, feminism, poverty, hate crimes, 'liberal' Asian parents (as opposed to the cliche traditional ones), non-conformists, or other realms that are very relevant to, but not often addressed by Asian-Americans. Racism, assimilation, identity-searching, and the ensuing _rage_ and confusion that many Asian-American teens feel but may be unable to verablize are not discussed at all in an emotionally honest, forthright dialogue. There are innuendos and undercurrents but nothing you can sink your teeth into. And in my humble opinion, very little that speaks of how Asian-American teens today must live and interact in a mulit-ethnic society and with mainstream popular culture. Most of the pieces dealt with connecting with the author's 'Asian' heritage. Which is refreshing. It is impressive that the authors come from a wide variety of ethnic and national backgrounds. The stories, likewise, encompass a wide variety of locales and moods. It was worthwhile reading about different Asian-American perspectives. I actually enjoyed a few of the stories, and to be fair the writing quality and styles varied greatly. One of the stories, about a Vietnamese-American boy and his night actually struck a chord with me (even though I'm not Vietnamese) The writing level overall is acceptable considering it is aimed at a relatively young audience. Although I am not thrilled with 'American Dragons', I *am* thrilled that a compilation such as this was even attempted and I PRAY that many more will follow and improve. Hooray for the authors, publishers, and supporters of this book. Even though I find much to criticize, it is because I expect so much from Asian-American 'voices'. Many of the shortcomings I see could have been improved upon by the addition of different authors. I would recommend this book to Asian-American youth. For anyone else, I would not discourage you from buying 'American Dragons'.
