Book Description
Martial Arts After 40 is the first book on the market to cater to two growing populations, martial artists and baby boomers. Once a blood and guts sport for tough young men, martial arts is now touted by athletes, aerobics trainers, actors, super models and soccer moms as the number one way for adults to get fit and stay in shape. This book addresses important questions like:
How old is too old start a marital art?
What type of exercises are best (and which ones are dangerous) for the over-40 martial artist?
What are the effects of aging and how can martial arts combat them?
How can baby boomers keep up in a martial arts class full of gen-Xers?
What types of injuries are most prevalent after 40 and how can they be prevented?
This book takes a positive and enthusiastic approach to taking up or continuing a martial art in middle age or later. Readers will be inspired, reassured and educated.
Customer Reviews:
great book!.......2007-09-18
I can't say enough good things about this book. I am 45 and started Taekwondo 8 months ago. My body does not move like the 15 yr olds in our class. It talks about everything I need to know about training, diet, exercise..plus a good amount of humor mixed in. It was such a fast read..but I will also use it as a reference book. I tried the "tournament diet" and it worked like a charm.
If you are over 40 and are taking Taekwondo you have to get this book!
Easy to read and a great value!.......2007-08-30
This book is written by an over 40 Martial artist who knows what he is talking about, Sang H. Kim, Ph.D.. Dr. Kim is positive, optimistic, and writes well. This book is easy to read. This is an excellent book for the over 40 person considering beginning a martial art. The information is realistic for the mature artist. (This reviewer is over 50, is still progressing in Taekwondo, and can attest to much of Dr. Kim's advice).
Dr. Kim's health advice is current, and is consistent with what we have been hearing from many health conscious sources. His advice on monitoring heart rate in chapter 2 is a very good idea for an over-40 martial artist attending class with younger students. Dr. Kim gives advice on how to work with limitations such as previous injuries, as by the time we are 40 we are more likely to have had previous injuries. His diet advice in chapter three is accurate, practical and easy to follow. For those of you who are willing to more radically modify your diet to extend your life and health may wish to read Dr. Gabriel Cousins book on Rainbow Green Live food CuisineRainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine. Chapters 5 to 7 discuss changes in our fitness, agility, flexibility as we age, and what we can do to improve them safely.
The rest of the book (chapters 8 through 22) discuss things you can do to safely improve as a martial artist. This reviewer suggests that the reader complete the whole book before choosing a martial arts school. Scattered through the chapters are things an aspiring over 40s martial artist should look for in a martial arts school.
This book is well worth the price. There are many practical suggestions that can help you avoid injury and be the most youthful martial artist you can be.
Paul Trogen, Ph.D.
Save your money.......2007-01-07
This book is too generic and full of platitudes, plus poor grammar and typos. The sloppy editing gets worse at the end of the book. For anyone over 40 who has ever done martial arts, there is nothing new here. For anyone who is just beginning in their 40s or later, it is okay but not great. If you are into fitness or are even aware of your body and have anything resembling an active lifestyle, you will be disappointed.
The first four chapters are a waste of space - why fitness is good; the fact that exercise, diet, and mental attitude contribute to health; that most people over 40 resist exercise because it is work and can hurt; etc. Most of the rest of the book discusses the changes in fitness you can expect when you are older, and tells you to keep your chin up and not give up even if tempted. There is also not nearly enough specific information on how to compensate for various physical limitations due to injury, etc. that prevent a full range of motion for many older martial artists.
The only thing I found of value was Chapter 19 Sparring: a few recommendations on how to modify sparring technique to compensate for a loss of power, speed, flexibility, and agility for the older martial artist. Most of it was fairly obvious (circle away from your opponent to avoid being hit!), but there was some good info about disrupting the fight rhythm and using a few simple techniques that you know well and that work for your particular body.
The book finishes with some guidance on meditation and mind/body connection. A good final chapter would have been how to know when to call it quits and stop training for good, or at least change styles to something easier on the body like tai chi.
If I had glanced through this at Barnes and Noble, I would not have bought it. You can have mine.
You are never too old.......2006-07-14
I started my martial arts journey 10 years ago when I was just 40 years old with my autistic son. Now, as an instructor I have many parents say they are too old to start martial arts. I show them this book and we talk about effective modifications like starting out slow, eating right and going at a pace that works for them as individuals. This book explains how to successfully spar a younger, faster apponent. It offers tricks of the trade that I've never learned before which have been helpful for me. This is a great book for those who are just starting in martial arts as well as those who have been doing it for a while. Getting into martial arts at 40, or older, is a great way to keep yourself in shape which in turn will drasticly slow down your aging process. It can be as mild or agressive as you like. Not only will you stay in shape, which can save your life, but you will also learn skills that can save your life as well or the lives of someone else. A training partner of mine (who is 65)once asked me; "What happens to a tomato when it stops growing? It dies! The same will happen to us." We have to keep growing mentally, physically and spiritually.
Very encouraging and informative.......2006-06-12
This book actually convinced me that it wasn't such a crazy idea to take up taekwondo at 48. I'd always wanted to learn a martial art but never had the opportunity until recently. A little voice in my head said "too late" but after taking a few introductory classes and then finding this book I realized that it's definitely not too late. Kim's book is 80% instruction and 20% inspiration. I learned a lot about what's "normal" for someone in my age bracket, especially what to expect to be able to do and what to focus on improving, both in class and at home on my own. Very helpful guide if you are "of a certain age" and interested in taking up a great new sport.

I Liked the Way s In Which It Was Unexpectedly Helpful.......2002-07-19
While this guide was useful in all the mundane ways (accomodation, eating), I'm grateful to for the way it got me thinking about some of the less understandable aspects of Singapore. After a couple of days of walking around S'pore I began to wonder at the odd sense of artificiality about the place, and the strange way my hosts and others talked of the city-state. I was glad to be reffered to Stan Sesser's book *The Lands of Charm and Cruelty*, which told me of "the fear that even the best educated Singaporeans feel towards their government." I am also grateful to this guide for steering me towards Ian Buruma's essay "The Nanny State of Asia," in his book *The Missionary and the Libertine*, which went into a lot of detail about the police state behind the facade of Singapore's clean toilets, etc. The guide was useful in all practical matters, but by dealing with some of the unpleasantness that is the reality of Singapore, I came away with a better understanding of the place which grew increasingly creepy the longer I stayed. Lonely Planet Singapore is an excellent, thoughtful guide that did what it was supposed to do, yet also led me to other books which helped enrich my business trip. For understanding some aspects of Chinese behaviour in a business setting, I also recommend Bo Yang's *The Ugly Chinaman and the Crisis in Chinese Culture*. Paul Theroux's *Saint Jack* is a novel set in Singapore - though written in the 70's, I found the attitudes and actions of many of the characters still relevant to locals and expats of Singapore today.
A Solid Reference for Getting Around.......2002-03-31
...We found this book to be a very solid reference for transportation and side trips. Compared to Fodor's Singapore guide, which we also carried, this book has more accurate and helpful information on sightseeing and transportation options, e.g., local places to buy bus or ferry tickets for side trips in Malaysia and Indonesia. The book is also a good source of ideas for exploring outlying islands, forests, and neighboring cities.
We were not impressed with the "Places to Eat" section...With two broad exceptions, the descriptions of "Places to Eat" and "Places to Stay" are too brief to be of much use in choosing a specific restaurant or hotel. However, each publisher covers hawker centers reasonably well...Lonely Planet's treatment of budget and alternative lodging arrangements--such as camping--seems fairly comprehensive. Finally, you will find more shopping advice in other guides, although this book's shopping section is not bad.
The information in the book is well organized and generally easy to find. While it is not a "pocket size" guide, its size (approx. 5 x 7 in. or 12.5 x 18.5 cm) makes it very easy to take along in a backpack, camera bag, or briefcase. At 200 pages plus maps, it is light enough to go almost anywhere.
For getting around in the city and to more remote locations, we found ourselves relying on this book. If you are familiar with Singapore, have already arranged accommodations, or are more interested in exploring and side trips, the options in this book can take you much farther afield without stress. First time travelers to Singapore (other than those with extremely limited budgets) or those who go only for the shopping may find the Fodor's guide more helpful.
Lonely Planet maintains a very good website...which features detailed content, including updates about Singapore and other locations. I have rated this book four stars, a very usable little reference that will likely become more useful the more you visit. Combined with the website, the book can prepare you well for nearly all aspects of a visit to Singapore, especially if you intend to use Singapore as a hub for excursions elsewhere. More detailed descriptions of hotels, including further treatment and recommendations in the top half, and more material in the shopping section would give the book a stronger appeal to a broader audience.
out of date, innaccurate, out of touch.......2000-07-17
As an American having lived in Singapore for much of the past 30 years, it seems to me Mr. Hellander hasn't spent much time there. Much of his 'facts' and 'tips' are out of date, or just plain wrong. His 'tips' on hotels and restuarants in particular seem to be based on marketing data, and not real world experience. If you are planning to go to Singapore, there are many other, better written and more accurate, books to read. This would not be one of them. Insight and Essential Explorer do a much better job.
Excellent Book.......2000-07-12
I am about to move to Singapore and find the information in this guide truly exceptional. Everything is included in this guide: History of Singapore, Places of Interest, Local Foods and Flavors, Where to go Shopping, How to get Around, Where to Stay, etc. I've rarely found a guide of pocketsize filled with so much information.
Book Description
When the bodies of three teenagers were found on the shores of Lake Waco, Texas in July, 1982, even seasoned lawmen were taken aback by the savage mutilation and degradation they had been subjected to. Yet only 52 days after the gruesome triple-murder was discovered, frustrated authorities suspended the case indefinitely. Patrol Sergeant Truman Simons, who had been called to the scene that night, saw the carnage first-hand -- and vowed to find the ferocious killer or killers. He soon became a man with a mission, risking his career and his family's safety in search of evidence. Plunging himself into a netherworld of violence and evil, Simons finally got close enough to a murderous ringleader to hear his careless whispers--and ultimately, put him and his three accomplices behind bars for the brutal slayings. Now, in his Edgar Award-winning account of the Lake Waco killings, acclaimed true crime writer Carlton Stowers lays bare the facts behind the tragic crimes, the twisted predators, and the heroic man who broke the investigation--with important updated information based on new developments in the case.
Customer Reviews:
Excellently Written True Crime Mystery!!!!.......2007-10-03
I remember reading this book about the hideous nature of the crime involving the three teens who went out for a night of fun but didn't expect to be brutally murdered and raped on their last night of earth. Carlton Stowers is an excellent crime writer and this book is absolutely a classic to be read. The triple homicide in a secluded section of the woods in Texas where two girls and a young man lost their lives. I remember reading this book and angry about the horrific murders of such young people. Of course, the book does unfold like a murder mystery. It begins at the beginning of the case and unfolds gradually. I was it was fiction but sadly it is not because it's all true. The author paints the victims as young kids with dreams and ambitions that they would never live to fulfill in their short life.
3 Psycho Killers, 3 Innocent Teenagers, & 1 Determined Cop Makes For Great Reading!.......2007-08-20
Kenneth Franks, Jill Montgomery and Raylene Rice had the misfortune of meeting up with David Spence and his his friends, brothers Gilbert and Tony Melendez in Koehne Park in Waco, Texas. In the park, the teenagers met with their brutal, untimely death at the hands of David Spence and his friends.
Truman Simons, a veteran police office, took the case personally and worked dilligently to obtain the proof needed to convict the three men who murdered these innocent teens.
The twists and turns of this book make it hard to put down. From the intial investigation to the prosecution of Jordanian born Muneer Deeb for his role in the deaths of the teens (and, yes, I do believe he was guilty but walked on techinicality), the book is full of details as you walk side by side with investigators as they seek justice.
The only disappointing aspect of this book is that little information was available regarding the third victim Raylene Rice. However, the author makes note that her family essentially decided to deal with the death of Raylene by distancing themselves from the other victims' families, investigators and prosecutors. At one point, Stowers even writes that Raylene, because of her families actions, almost became somewhat of an afterthought to the public.
This is an excellent book. One I'm sure that will keep you reading, with never a dull moment!
Meandering, maudlin, and mendacious.......2007-07-11
I found this book generally interminable and sometimes incomprehensible, with poor pacing and organization, and its hero-worship of the detective became downright annoying. I read it many years ago, long before there was a public outcry over the convictions (and execution), but even then felt that the case was a reach. My advice is to avoid it, particularly since even the factual basis for the book is questionable at this stage.
Careless Whispers.......2006-09-25
I have not read Carlton Stowers before, but I won't let that happen again.
He writes so well that I couldn't put the book down.. Normally, I enjoy a true crime story once in a while but not too often.. Mr Stowers writes so well that I plan to read all of his books.. Truman Capote captured my interest with "In Cold Blood" & now it is Carlton Stowers..I might go back to James Patterson in the future, but I'll read a lot of "Stowers" first.....
Well written account about a gruesome crime.......2006-09-23
I only have two problems with this book. One, I felt it could have been boiled down. It was too long. The other is that there isn't much about the life of victim Raylene Rice. In my opinion, Spence was guilty as hell.

Book Description
In CARELESS WHISPERS, Rochelle Alers sweeps us into the high-stakes world of the magazine industry and into the heart of a woman about to discover the depths of her own desire. . . .
After being stood up at the altar, Dyana Randolph moves to New York City to salvage her shattered life--and lands a job at prestigious Pinnacle magazine. There, the charismatic publisher, Michael Dalton, quickly takes her under his wing, providing grist for the rumor mill . . . and giving Dyana the excuse to hide safely behind innuendo, never allowing any man to get too close.
Then, with Michael's retirement, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Bradshaw takes charge of the magazine. Refusing to be intimidated by his dictatorial reputation, Dyana still finds herself drawn to this handsome and very wealthy man. And when Nicholas scores a publishing coup, he enlists Dyana's help with the project. With long hours in close quarters, Dyana can no longer run from her feelings or her past. Will careless whispers blossom into promises of love?
Customer Reviews:
Whispers better left unsaid.......2007-04-10
In Careless Whispers, Ms. Alers tells us Dyana Randolph's story. Dyana is a young woman who after being burned by deception of mistaken love and stood up at the altar, Dyana decides to hide away from love should it ever come along again. After leaving home and moving in with her unmarried aunt, Dyana launches herself into her work at Pinnacle magazine. She also feels safe with the magazine's publisher, Michael Dalton, an older man and a fatherly figure, who is also widowed. Dyana feels obligated to Michael and helps him out as a hostess after hours and serves as his date on many occasions. However, good intentions, Dyana and Michael are the brunt of many office whispers of a romantic involvement between the two. The whispers are not only cruel, but they are careless whispers that are untrue.
After Michael decides to retire, a younger and renown journalist, Nicholas Bradshaw takes over the businesss. Nicholas is smitten with Dyana and becomes enamored of her. Although he has heard the whispers, he sets out to form his own opinions. Nicholas thinks its strange that Dyana is drawn to Michael and there are some doubts, but Nicholas also gives Dyana the benefit of the doubt. After several encounters, Nicholas is not only drawn to Dyana, but Dyana's heart unthaws and she begin to see Nicholas as a love interest. Can love possibly be in the picture for Dyana, who desperately wants to love again? Can she get pass the most ultimate betrayal by her first love? Will Nicholas be the man to break the barrier or will their love be destroyed by "careless whispers?"
Alers Is My Favorite!.......2007-01-03
I searched high and low to find each novel written by Ms. Alers. I felt a loss when I came to the end of another and estatic when the next arrived (mail order). Careless Whispers was no exception. Well done!
Brief, forgettable, and amateurish..........2004-07-02
Rochelle Alers's first novel "Careless Whispers" tries to be a different romance, but the story bored me to tears, but luckily it was only 186 pages. Dyana, the magazine writer heroine, starts to fall hard for a maverick Pulitizer-prize winning photographer after someone rams their car in an accident. Dyana starts to see Nicholas(the photographer) in a new light. Then they work together on a "tell-all" book from a convicted spy, and naturally, they're smitten with each other and marry. But both have heavy baggage from exes that cheated on them. Will they repeat the same mistakes? Or will they learn to trust each other completely. Only merits 2 stars.
THIS IS WHAT DELAYED MY ENTRY INTO BLACK ROMANCE 10/23/02.......2002-10-24
It took me to get to chapter 4 before I realized I read this book before. I read this book back in 1989 when I picked up my first African-American romance. I am an avid reader and I also collect books. I have my original copy of this book with a different cover. Back then I honestly believed that white writers were writing these books because the format that was followed was similar to Harlequin Romances. Everyone knows that a Harlequin had a guy, a girl, and an unlikely situation. The whole romance was based on a look, a one time kiss, or reactions and dialogue that was way over the top and supposed to pass for sensuous. This was the type of African-American romance that made me not want to read any romance that was supposed to have African American characters in it. I didn't pick up another African-American Romance until 1995. Overall, I absolutely love Ms. Alers later stories the Hideaway series and her Anthologies but as for this story and Gentle Yearnings they are not what I would call hot, sexual, or sensuous stories. They are luke warm like older Harlequins they leave you wondering why you wasted your time.
THIS WAS A JOKE!.......2002-07-31
I DON'T SEE HOW PEOPLE COULD GIVE THIS BOOK AT LEAST 3 STARS. I WAS VEEEEERY DISAPPOINTED. READING THE EXCERPTS GAVE ME FALSE HOPE. THIS WAS NOT A ROMANCE BOOK. IT IS ABOUT A WOMAN WITH MANY ISSUES. PLUS, SHE CRIED TOO MUCH. I'VE HEARD THAT MRS. ALERS WRITES GOOD BOOKS. WELL, THIS WAS THE FIRST BOOK OF HERS THAT I HAVE READ. THIS MUST NOT HAVE BEEN HER BEST. I'M GLAD THAT I RENTED IT FROM THE LIBRARY. THIS MAY SEEM LIKE I'M A VERY RUDE PERSON. I'M JUST OUT-SPOKEN. WELL, READ IT FOR YOURSELF. YOU MIGHT LIKE IT. MIGHT.

Though I read this book a while back I remember really enjoying it. Since it was a while back I forgot the names but a girl meets a guy who she is really falling for but she hears he has a drug problem. She does not want to believe it. The ending is really great and was unexpected for me. I recommend it!

The three teenagers found in a wooded Texas park suffered slow torture with a knife before dying. A usually implacable cop who arrived early on the scene, Truman Simons, was so shaken by the lonely, abandoned appearance of their naked bodies that he got down on his knees next to one of the girls and promised he would find her killer. But he wasn't part of the initial investigation, which exhausted all leads and was labeled "inactive" after just 52 days. Simons begged his superior to be allowed to investigate on his own, slowly tracked down a few pieces of the puzzle, then was asked to drop the case after a suspect he'd arrested was set free. He then did what few cops would do: he quit the police department, took a job as a jailer, and pursued the case on his free time, eventually forming an oddly intimate jailer-suspect relationship with one of the killers. Careless Whispers won the 1987 Edgar Award for best fact crime.
Customer Reviews:
Scary.......2003-01-03
I lived in Waco when these murders happened. The fact of mistaken identity scared everyone. I live only about a 1/2 mile from where the murders took place. Also, the young man that was murdered had the same last name as me, which is not a common last name. My mom was always being asked if it was her son and I if he was my brother. Even though I was living right there and heard it on the news and read it in the newspaper constantly, it still made the hair stand up on my arms when I read the book.
Gripping True Crime at its best! You'll read it twice.......2000-09-27
I read just about every true crime book that comes out and this one, for me, is definitely in my top five out of many. The writing itself is excellent and the details are outstanding. Truman Simons must certainly be the most dedicated investigator to ever work a murder scene and his dogged dedication alone resulted in finding the murderers and punishing them accordingly. The book was especially intriguing with psychics, one that told the police many "sightings" she had that were right on the mark most of the time. This book is so well written that the pain the victim's families felt from losing their children will haunt you for a long time. I promise this is one crime book that you will read repeatedly. If you are a dedicated true crime buff, do your best to find this book and read it! My hardback copy is one of my true crime collection treasures! I've read it three times over the years and each time I couldn't put it down.
update.......2000-06-09
Those readers who were greatly affected by this story might be interested to know that Deeb was later given a new trial and acquitted. Spence was finally executed in 1997. The Melendez brothers are still in prison. A Westlaw or Lexis search provides a great deal of info on the aftermath.
Heartbreaking.......1999-12-27
A very affecting book, teenagers are even targets of their own friends, and yet becomes a case of mistaken identity. Shakes your faith in some police tho, thank gosh for a man who would not let it go. A page turner right to the end.
The most interesting book i ever read........1999-06-15
Carlton Stowers does an excellant job brining in the reader to this story. A muder for hire that ends up with the wrong people killed. The story is true and takes many strange and unexpected twist and turns. This is the most interesting book i have ever read,Stowers makes you feel like you know the people involved.
