Book Description

On dry land, most organisms are confined to the surface, or at most to altitudes of a hundred meters—the height of the tallest trees. In the oceans, though, living space has both vertical and horizontal dimensions: with an average depth of 3800 meters, the oceans offer 99% of the space on Earth where life can develop. And the deep sea, which has been immersed in total darkness since the dawn of time, occupies 85% of ocean space, forming the planet’s largest habitat. Yet these depths abound with mystery. The deep sea is mostly uncharted—only about 5 percent of the seafloor has been mapped with any reasonable degree of detail—and we know very little about the creatures that call it home. Current estimates about the number of species yet to be found vary between ten and thirty million. The deep sea no longer has anything to prove; it is without doubt Earth’s largest reservoir of life.
Combining the latest scientific discoveries with astonishing color imagery, The Deep takes readers on a voyage into the darkest realms of the ocean. Revealing nature’s oddest and most mesmerizing creatures in crystalline detail, The Deep features more than two hundred color photographs of terrifying sea monsters, living fossils, and ethereal bioluminescent creatures, some photographed here for the very first time. Accompanying these breathtaking photographs are contributions from some of the world’s most respected researchers that examine the biology of deep-sea organisms, the ecology of deep-sea habitats, and the history of deep-sea exploration.
An unforgettable visual and scientific tour of the teeming abyss, The Deep celebrates the incredible diversity of life on Earth and will captivate anyone intrigued by the unseen—and unimaginable—creatures of the deep sea.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, brilliant, beautiful book.......2007-10-15

I've always been fascinated by the deep sea. As David Attenborough has pointed out in the marvellous BBC series "Blue Planet", half of the world's surface is covered by water more than a mile deep, and we still know very little about what goes on down there. More men have walked on the moon than have penetrated the deepest ocean depths. This magnificent publication helps redress the balance. It takes you down to this bizarre world with its pitch blackness and crushing pressures and shows you some of its inhabitants (I believe a new species is discovered every ten days). The pictures are augmented by fascinating descriptions. The only sad note is that two of the creatures depicted, the two enormous squids (giant and colossal) with their dinner plate-sized eyes, will probably never be seen the way they have been depicted (artists' representations, as opposed to photos) - it was only recently that Japanese researchers got actual photos of the live animals. Still the artists' representations are fascinating and excite the imagination with the knowledge that there be real monsters down there and that this is what they look like.

Claire Nouvian has done us a great service by producing this book showing us an extraordinary world, and one which man is in the process of destroying without even knowing what's down there.

An incredible journey to the under sea world of mysterious aquatic life.
Fascinating photos of extraordinary creatures and their habitat. We purchased the book as a gift for our son, a recent art school graduate who specializes in creating concept art. He absolutely loved the book, and will be a valuable tool and reference work for his library.

This is one of the best coffee table books I have! The pictures are amazing and numerous guests have used it as a conversation starter in our living room. For anyone who loved marine biology as a kid (and who DIDNT?!) this book is stellar.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING!.......2007-09-23

This is the most amazing book that I have seen in a long time! Extraordinarily beautiful fotos of equally stunning and fascinating creatures! The beauty and creativity of nature takes your breath away! A must to have!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!.......2007-09-23

Beautiful, depending upon what your definition of "beauty" is.
The animals in this book could very well be the inhabitants of YOUR nightmare, but not mine.
The incredible creatures, which we are privileged to view are breathtaking.
And yet another example of the world we have not seen...and are probably destroying.

The facts speak for themselves. In 1857, the Central America, a sidewheel steamer ferrying passengers fresh from the gold rush of California to New York and laden with 21 tons of California gold, encountered a severe storm off the Carolina coast and sank, carrying more than 400 passengers and all her cargo down with her. She then sat for 132 years, 200 miles offshore and almost two miles below the ocean's surface--a depth at which she was assumed to be unrecoverable--until 1989, when a deep-water research vessel sailed into the harbor at Norfolk, Virginia, fat with salvaged gold coins and bullion estimated to be worth one billion dollars.

Author Gary Kinder wisely lets the story of the Columbus-America Discovery Group, led by maverick scientist and entrepreneur Tommy Thompson, unfold without hyperbole. Kinder interweaves the tale of the Central America and her passengers and crew with Thompson's own story of growing up landlocked in Ohio, an irrepressible tinkerer and explorer even in his childhood days, and his progress to adulthood as a young man who always had "7 to 14" projects on the table or spinning in his head at any given moment. One of those projects would become the preposterous recovery of the stricken steamer, and the resourcefulness and later urgency with which the project would proceed is contrasted poignantly with the Central America's doomed battle in 1857 to stay afloat.

Thompson, who spent nearly a decade planning and organizing his recovery effort, emerges as one of the great unsung adventurers of these times (the technical innovations alone required for such a task produced a windfall for the scientific community and defined a new state of the art for deep-sea explorers and treasure hunters), and the story of the steamer's sinking is compelling enough to make any reader wonder why the Central America sinking isn't synonymous with shipwreck in this Titanic-happy age. --Tjames Madison

Book Description

"White knuckle reading...with generous portions of adventure, intrigue, heroism, and high technology interwoven."
--Los Angeles Times Book Review

This enthralling true story of maritime tragedy and visionary science begins with a disaster to rival the sinking of the Titanic.

In September 1857, the S.S. Central America, a side-wheel steamer carrying passengers returning from the gold fields of California, went down during a hurricane off the Carolina coast. More than 400 men--and 21 tons of gold--were lost. In the 1980s, a maverick engineer named Tommy Thompson set out to find the wreck and salvage its treasure from the ocean floor.

With knuckle-biting suspense, Gary Kinder reconstructs the terror of the Central America's last days, when passengers bailed freezing water from the hold, then chopped the ship's timbers to use as impromptu liferafts. He goes on to chronicle Thompson's epic quest for the lost vessel, an endeavor that drew on the latest strides in oceanography, information theory, and underwater robotics, and that pitted Thompson against hair-raising weather, bloodthirsty sharks, and unscrupulous rivals.

Ship of Gold is a magnificent adventure, filled with heroism, ingenuity, and perseverance.

4 out of 5 stars What an Adventure !.......2007-09-21

This is an appealing book on many levels. 19th century sea adventure, heroes, tradegies, great survival stories, heart stopping excitement, 20th century high tech recovery adventures, interlopers and bottom feeding lawyers and insurance companies, it's got it all. Why 4 stars rather than 5 ? I found it a tad long after they found the boat and began that part of the story. But, that is a small point. Well worth the reader's time.

3 out of 5 stars Ship of Gold is a good story with excellent details about the recovery of the gold........2007-08-28

Ship of Gold is a good story with excellent details about the recovery of the gold.
In my next recovery book I will look for more diving experience. The ROV's do not have the same adventure value as the human diving experience we have on the North Sea but then again the North Sea is maximum 40 meters deep. We don't need ROV's at these depths.
I liked the sonar specialist story and the systematical scanning of the area's with the best values in the probability matrix.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down one of the best book ever! .......2007-08-20

This is by far the best book ever. I have purchased more copies then I can count and I have given it to all of my family members and most of my friends. All of them loved it. Even my mom told it was one of the best books she had ever read. Being she reads a book every two weeks that's a pretty good compliment.

This is a short book, but it takes a long time to read. It's not that it's a hard read; it's just that it's so good you will take your time to read it. Almost like savoring a great wine.

I don't recommend many books, but this one should be on the top of your reading pile. Once you read it you will understand why and I'm willing to bet you will recommend it to all of your friends.

4 out of 5 stars Good modern day treasure hunt.......2007-07-04

I liked the way the author took the reader back and forth from the past to the present. It was interesting to see how much planning and inguenuity it took to accomplish the recovery of the gold. Once the treasure was found, I have to admit to having a mild case of 'gold fever' due to the vivid descriptions provided by G. Kinder. The only reason I didn't give it the full 5 is because of the Tommy (the technical mastermind of the recovery) praising!!!! Alright already, he certainly must walk on water, and if he doesn't, he'll surely invent a way to. Inspite of the Tommy factor, this is a good book.
Also recommended: In the Heart of the Sea

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Nonfiction.......2006-12-28

When the Central America sank in 1857 she took 21 tons of gold and more than 400 souls to the bottom of the sea, including one of my ancestors. Kinder's incredible book weaves the tale of the shipwreck together with the story of the thrilling recovery more than 130 years later.

Ship of Gold is a fantastic book from historic and scientific perspectives. If you read this book, you will gain new insights about the Gold Rush and 19th-century sea travel; better yet, you will be amazed by the technological and biological advancements which were a direct consequence of Tommy Thompson's recovery.

I read Ship of Gold to fill in the details of an old family legend. I was pleased to discover a truly amazing work of nonfiction.

4 out of 5 stars Depressing.......2007-08-05

I admire this woman for the undertaking, kayaking around Lake Superior. But the descriptions of downpours, thick fog and cold water 24/7 was as depressing as her thoughts of her lost friend. Beautifully written, this book is not for the joyful-at-heart as it touches on a subject we all must face with time: the passing of a loved one and mid-life doubts.

The book worked because as the journey moved on around the lake, Ann described the boulders, the lichen, the flora and the immediate surroundings, all which were backdrops to her thoughts.

There was a distinctive difference in the wilderness between the Canadian and American sides of Lake Superior that she detailed along the way. Fewer but more interesting people were found on the Canadian side and some of the shore descriptions were so detailed I could smell the water and trees.

But there were times I fast-forwarded to get away from the depressing parts (when she talked about old times with her dead friend) and read more of the adventure of the trip, as she and her partner amassed miles, met up with friends or strangers along the shore, built a campsite for the night, etc. That she was able to finish the entire circumference is in itself amazing, not because she did it (she is afterall an endurance athlete) but because of the strong demons she had to fight inside.

I recommend this for people who love the seas, lakes, kayaking and pushing oneself to ones physical limits.

5 out of 5 stars This book took me out on the water with the author!.......2004-09-19

I couldn't put this book down! I was there with every storm, every breathless moment of this incredible journey! I was exhausted when I finished this page-turner strictly from the adventure standpoint, but the emotional journey which parallels the physical is equally compelling and I found the author's honesty to be refreshing and comforting. This is a beautiful book to read and re-read when your own life's journey makes you wonder if you're on the right path and it makes a wonderful gift as well!

4 out of 5 stars big thoughts on a big lake.......2004-09-05

Linnea's book is one of only a handful of kayaking books really worth dipping into. Her prose and purpose are conveyed perfectly to the reader. Both kayakers and students of water will enjoy this work. Only Chris Duff's book comes close to matching it for creating lingering memories. Both works figure strongly in my book which reviews outdoor water recreation - Deep Immersion: The Experience of Water. Linnea writes with passion and enjoys getting wet and immersing herself in Lake Superior's coasts. As Thoreau wrote " That part of you that is wettest is fullest of life" (quoted from Profitably Soaked: Thoreau's Engagement With Water; Green Frigate Books, 2003).

3 out of 5 stars Spirtual: Yes; Kayaking: Maybe.......2003-09-01

I picked up this book expecting it to be a book about not only a woman finding herself and understanding the place where she was in her life better but also a book about kayaking around Lake Superior (a trip I'm about to embark on next spring). I was not disappointed by the Spiritual nature of the book (even if it was a bit too New Agey for me) but I was disappointed by the lack of good kayaking stories (other than the obligatory toughness of the trip type stories). I was also surprised by how "unexpectedly harsh" the author found Lake Superior and the lack of real knowledge of the lake she possessed (especially since she lived on the shores of the lake in Duluth, MN). Anyone preparing to make this trip should have been better prepared for the fickleness of Lake Superior and anyone who actually lives on the lake should have known this wasn't going to be your summer camp paddling trip. Like many other reviewers, I did find her whinning a bit much at times. BUT overall I found this book enjoyable, touching at many points and made me anxious to start my trip at Sault Ste. Marie in June. (Picky-Nicky note here: This town is called "The Soo" by us native Michiganders and not "The Sioux" as the author spells it in the book..it is a local shortening of Sault Ste. Marie pronounced "Soo Saint Marie", not named after the Indian tribe)

4 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Awakening.......2003-07-04

The day after her 43rd birthday Ann Linnea (and her brother-friend, Paul) begin circumnavigating Lake Superior by kayak, a 1200-mile spiritual and physical journey of 65 days. In order to complete this passage, and move onto the next phase of her life (which includes leaving her husband of 21 years), the author struggles to overcome physical and emotional limits while battling raging seas, bitter winds and freezing temperatures. Her desire to understand the changes she needs to make lead her on a search for life-affirming answers, and ultimately allow her to find purpose and meaning in her life. The insights she shares enable the reader to bear witness to her transformation as she faces self-doubt, life-threatening danger and exercises her choice to live. A marathon runner and cross country skier, Linnea is no stranger to the elements, no idle pursuer of physical challenges. Her life lessons are learned through her body. In the summer of 1992, Ann Linnea became the first woman to circumnavigate Lake Superior. Her experience with "She-Who-Is-The-Biggest" changed her life. The telling of that experience is both moving and meaningful.

As Lori draws once more on Aunt DimityÂ's supernatural aid, Atherton whips equal measures of whimsy and suspense into an irresistible confection.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Atherton does her usual stellar job - a pleasure to read........2007-09-29

Lori Shepherd is uprooted and her life turned upside down when her husband Bill Willis receives death threats. Whoever the disgruntled client is, he has taken pictures of the family at close range, which makes the threats far more convincing than an anonymous letter or the like.

Using his family and business connections, Bill has Lori and the boys spirited off to a remote island in the Scottish isles, where the tourists never come and all outsiders are closely scrutinized by the locals. While there, Lori runs into an old family friend, who is traveling incognito. This is surprising, and a trifle alarming. Damien, the bodyguard, is not amused by this coincidental happenstance, and he is also skeptical of the general affluence and xenophobia exhibited by the locals. Lori, as always, is convinced that there are logical and legal explanations for everything. Nobody else is as optimistic as she.

In the meantime, Bill and the police are working their way through his client list, searching for someone disgruntled and crazy enough to want Bill and his family dead. Since Bill's clients are staid upper-class types, and his usual practice involves writing wills and setting up trusts, the search seems futile. Of course it is not.

This is the eleventh in the Aunt Dimity series. Constant readers will not be disappointed; Atherton does her usual stellar job of placing Lori in jeopardy and then getting her out of it. Aunt Dimity (a ghost, for those who are not familiar with the series, who communicates with Lori via an old journal) plays a fairly small part in DEEP BLUE SEA; she is more of a sounding board and less of a sidekick than in some of the earlier books. While I would not suggest starting the series with DEEP BLUE SEA, I've skipped a few and had no trouble catching up on what little back story I didn't already know. As has happened in previous books, some of the plot devices are a little far-fetched, but not totally out of the realm of possibility, especially if the reader can accept the givens of ghostwriting and a telekinetic rabbit.

5 out of 5 stars Aunt Dimity.......2007-08-24

I love the Aunt Dimity stories. They are so well written, as well as exiting. Thanks for a good read.

3 out of 5 stars Dislike Lori.......2007-04-04

Enjoy Atherton's writing, but dislike Lori Shepard. I was hoping she'd get killed (isn't that awful). She is obnoxious. Bill deserves better.

5 out of 5 stars Everything a cozy reader could ask for.......2007-01-27

An unknown person calling him- or herself Abaddon is threatening the lives of Lori Shepherd and five-year-old twins Will and Rob, ostensibly to get back at her attorney-husband Bill for some perceived injustice. It seems ominous to Lori that the alias Abaddon has chosen is the name of the king of the bottomless pit in Revelations.

While Bill works with Scotland Yard to go through his case files to determine which of his clients might be Abaddon, Lori and the boys are whisked away to the castle Dundrillin on a remote island off the coast of Scotland - the personal fiefdom of a fantastically wealthy oilman and family friend, Sir Percy Pelham. Guarding Lori is Damian Hunter, a dashing defender who takes his job very seriously. Villains may have found Damian a formidable foe, but he hasn't come up against anyone like the very strong-willed Lori. While on the island of Erinskil, Lori and Damian notice some very strange goings on - not to mention a legendary ghost (?) of a religious brother who died on the island centuries ago.

The Aunt Dimity stories - typically take a familiar route: Lori Shepherd and/or her idyllic life in rural England are imperiled (an actual crime may or may not be involved). Lori takes action, usually in the company of a handsome man and often with her twins in tow. Lori consults with the ghost of Aunt Dimity to resolve whatever problem she faces. All the good people live happily ever after - or at least until the next story - and any bad guys get their comeuppance. Aunt Dimity and the Deep Blue Sea is no exception - it will delight Nancy Atherton's many fans.

I have enjoyed all ten of the previous Aunt Dimity stories and Nancy Atherton's latest book did not disappoint. Aunt Dimity and the Deep Blue Sea has everything a cozy reader could hope for. Readers who are put off by the idea of a ghost among the cast of characters should know that Aunt Dimity has recently begun to play much less of a role in the stories; Lori is very much center stage. She's a strong heroine who is only getting better with age. [...]

4 out of 5 stars Light but enjoyable mystery.......2006-07-15

When her husband receives death threats from an apparently angry client, Lori Shepherd and her twin sons are packed into a helicopter and whisked from England to an island off the Scotland coast. There, with family friend Sir Percy Pelham, and with a couple of bodyguards Pelhan provides, Lori hopes to remain safe--and to protect her children. Surely there is no way the mysterious "Abaddon" could follow them here. Even if he learned where they were hiding, he would have a hard time reaching the island, and a harder time doing it secretly. It seems that the islanders, wishing to prevent developers from ruining their island paradise, have cut off most contact with the outside world. Any strangers are closely observed.

The first night on the island, Lori observes mysterious lights on a nearby rock formation--a formation claimed by the locals to be both cursed and haunted. Could it be that the ghost of a long-dead monk still haunts the rock? Or is it more likely that Abaddon has somehow managed to cross the distance? With the assistance of her notebook, which contains the ghost of a spirit named Aunt Dimity, Lori hopes to address at least the question of lingering spirits. Gradually, though, and with the help of an old family friend, she begins seeing cracks in the too-perfect life of the islanders. Everyone lives comfortably, with the latest conveniences. Yet they distain tourism and the handcrafted tweed industry, said to be the basis of their wealth, simply couldn't generate the level of wealth enjoyed by the locals.

With the help of Aunt Dimity, and a sexy bodyguard, Lori attempts to unravel the mystery of the too-rich island, while simultaneously attempting to ensure that her children remain safe.

Author Nancy Atherton spins an enjoyable mystery. Lori makes a sympathetic sleuth, with the threat from Abaddon combining with the mysterious nature of the island's wealth combining to create interest. The notebook that is Aunt Dimity serves more as a sounding board for Lori's musings than as a major character, but then, most mystery readers would want Lori to solve the mysteries rather than being given the answer by a book.

Mystery traditionalists may object that Lori doesn't actually solve either mystery herself. One she has explained to her and the other leads to a bit of deus ex machina, but Atherton's engaging writing makes the reading worthwhile. I did think that Lori's crime rankings (drugs are bad, despoiling archeological remains and avoiding income taxes are okay) were a bit convenient. Surely a person as inately good as Lori would have more concerns about any type of illegal activity--especially as even morally justified illegal activities tend to create the need for other, more violent, crimes.

If you're looking for a quick light mystery, AUNT DIMITY AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA might just be the story for you.

Book Description

The twelve billion dollar cruise-ship industry caters to 10 million Americans annually on six- hundred million dollar floating cities.

In this terrifically entertaining history, Kristoffer A. Garin chronicles the cruise-ship industry, from its rise in the early sixties, to its explosion in the seventies with the hit show The Love Boat, to the current vicious consolidation wars and brazen tax dodges. Entrepreneurial genius and bare-knuckle capitalism mate with cultural kitsch as the cruise lines dodge U.S. tax, labor, and environmental laws to make unimaginable profits while bringing the world a new form of leisure.

A colorful and compelling behind-the-scenes narrative, Devils on the Deep Blue Sea is a definitive look at the industry and its robber barons who created floating empires.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Perspective on the Cruise Business.......2007-09-17

I found this book to be a very enjoyable read. It takes you beyond the marketing collateral of the cruise lines to the full story behind the industry's birth and development. The book is a wonderful narrative of the industry's short and eventful life. The author is fairly even handed in his treatment but there are times when you can sense when he likes or dislikes his subjects.

The author's assessment of the cruise line labor policies, environmental record and negotiation with Caribbean Governments was slanted. His view comes off as wanting the cruise lines to be vehicles of social change rather than commercial enterprises. I think he fairly criticizes the cruise lines for not living up to their environmental rhetoric but if the labor conditions are so bad onboard the ships, why are the positions so prized? If the Caribbean Governments are being abused so badly in their deals with the cruise lines, why do they continue to build larger piers to accomodate more ships?

The best parts of this book deal with the business deals that created the cruise industry and the characters that were involved. I have cruised for years and reading this book gave me a better perspective on the strategies and coincidences that shaped the industry. A good read!

4 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-05-27

Travel agents and veteran cruisers alike will get a big kick out of this book.

It's a behind the scenes look that pulls no punches but manages to remain affectionate. Garin simply proves that you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. I certainly hope it doesn't discourage any non-cruisers from taking the plunge.

My favorite bit: Carnival's Meshulam Zonis' line, "A passenger is like a wet towel," which he illustrated by hand motions that wordlessly said, "First we squeeze them this way, then we squeeze them that way."

5 out of 5 stars War ships/tankers to cruise ships....Oh My!!!.......2007-04-25

In the first chapter, Garin writes of the last day on a cruise ship which any cruiser knows is every man, woman and child for themselves....no longer are passengers royalty but more like refugees! He captures the irony of the debarking day that has always made my family chuckle as we tell stories of things we see on that last day! E.g. one poor passenger's luggage broke open outside an elevator...not one steward or other crew member offered assistance....they walked right over his strewn belongings. Anyway, Garin knows cruises and gives a wonderful history of the makings/history of the cruise industry from its humble beginnings to the big business it is today (and the two major cruise lines left). I was particularly fascinated with the evolution of the ships themselves! This was an easy read (and if a portion got dry....I skimmed!). I am cruising in 17 days...will do so with even more appreciation for the experience!

5 out of 5 stars If your cruise reservation is non-refundable...don't read this book.......2007-02-06

I picked this up after enjoying his Harper's article "On the great Ukrainian bride hunt". His writing style and my interest in critical looks at the evolution and externalities of specific industries (a la Fast Food Nation) made this an amusing & informative read. And the long odds that I'd ever go on a cruise got even longer.

4 out of 5 stars An even treatment with a fascinating storyline..........2006-09-03

Being a vacationer who has been on numerous cruises, this book recommendation looked like a certain fit... Devils On The Deep Blue Sea by Kristoffer A. Garin. He does a very good job in revealing how the cruise industry works, and the forces that have shaped it along the way.

The story starts in the late 1950's, when the cruise industry was really nothing more than a way to transport passengers from one location to another. The rich often had a lavish experience, while the "steerage" passengers were cramped and confined to the lower decks with restrictions on where they could go and what they could do. But in both cases, it was still a case of traveling from point A to point B. The airline industry quickly made cruise ships obsolete for rapid travel, and the shipping lines were becoming a footnote in history. But a few people thought that cruising could become a destination in itself, a way to vacation, see other lands, and then return to where you started. But the appeal had to be broad, and the luxuries of first class had to extend to all the passengers. Thru visionaries, financial risks, and mergers, what we have today is a $13 billion dollar industry that is truly global in numerous aspects. But behind the glitter and glamour, there are some less appealing items of interest...

Garin talks about how the cruise industry is largely staffed by impoverished workers from third-world nations who sign on for low base wages and whatever tips come from passengers. To many of us, these base wages wouldn't even support poverty, but they are considerable in the countries where the workers come from. The hours and rules aboard ship are harsh, with 12 to 16 hour days with little time off the norm. The industry also pays little in the way of taxes due to their ship registration being out of country to take advantage of international treaties preventing retaliatory fees. The laws and rights of the United States are not always in play either, as the ship is actually foreign territory. And if that's not enough, many of the tourist destinations are unable to get additional fees from the industry to support their infrastructure, as the industry will threaten to pull out of the port and destroy their tourism. It can be capitalism at its worst...

Personally, this book was better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a muck-raking, "boycott cruises" diatribe, and one that I wouldn't necessarily agree with. But the balance between the story of the cruise lines and the less-savory parts of the industry was just about right. And even the "expose" part wasn't hypercritical. I came away understanding the abuses, but (in many cases) understanding both sides of the issues. And really, it's not much different than what most other industries would do in the same circumstances...

Yes, I'm still going to go on cruises, and I'll still enjoy them. But I'll be even more considerate of the staff that makes it all work, and more in awe of what it takes to pull off the experience, week after week after week...

Product Description

Revised and expanded edition, soon to be a major motion picture! On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean's deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he's sure he saw but still can't prove exists - Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds.

Written off as a crackpot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Taylor refuses to forget the depths that nearly cost him his life. With a Ph.D. in paleontology under his belt, Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea. But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub.

Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he's never imagined, and what he finds could turn the tides bloody red until the end of time. MEG is about to surface. When she does, nothing and no one is going to be safe, and Jonas must face his greatest fear once again.

5 out of 5 stars MEG DEEP TERROR.......2007-08-30

Fist off I dont read fiction books i find that i get board with them.I read this book a freind had told me about because of my intrest in megalondon sharks. I could not put this book down steve went into a deep explanation about the shark and its surroundings I even found the people intersting this was a great read I read all 3 in one week and am waiting for the 4th to be releasted

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculousness defined and an ending so bad you have to read it to believe it..........2007-08-13

I have had the book "Meg" lingering on my to-read list for many years. Finally someone bought it for me last Christmas and last week I finally read it. And while I maintain that the ending is something so atrocious that it has to be read to be believed I cannot in good conscience recommend this novel to anyone.

Meg starts off as little worse than a silly book showing the potential for some promise and fun if nothing more but quickly slides into being downright contemptible and closes with an ending segment that not only makes me wonder how the heck the author was ever able to get something so preposterous published but actually made me re-read a few paragraphs to be absolutely certain that I had not somehow misunderstood what was going on in the story. I understand that there are times when cheese is just good. But there is a line between fun and ludicrous.

From a factual or scientific point of view, the book is way off. I can forgive that part of it because in relatively recent years research and studies have revealed a much different picture of the prehistoric beast in question. End of story on that part of it.

What is not forgivable is poor writing, what seems to be lack of an adequate vocabulary, plain awkward sentences, not to mention repetitiveness. I cannot count how many times the terms "crescent-shaped caudal fin" and "crescent-moon shaped tail" are used. I pretty much got the gist of it after the second, maybe even third time he described it. Perhaps it takes some people longer to grasp the concept of a crescent-moon shaped tail. Even so, excellent sentences such as the following totally make up for any repetitive crescent-moon talk: "Jonas held up a homing dart the size of a cardboard paper towel roll." Absolute poetry, really.

I've never done a review where I make a list of examples of what I am talking about when I say "bad" but I am going to do it this time:

--A feisty broad smuggling a rifle onto a helicopter in order to shoot a megalodon as revenge for her brother being killed...by a different megalodon

--a surfer riding the wave created by a megalodon being rescued from said megalodon by his brother (on a wave runner no less!) and taken to shore where a crowd of onlookers chants his name "Jim! Jim! Jim!"

--a man yelling at a megalodon "You're dead, monster, you hear me!?! You're ***king dead!"

--Alten referring to paleontologists and biologists as "so-called experts" as if he somehow knows more than they do (yes, Alten, not the characters in the book)

--men referring to the megalodon as a "b***h" and wanting to exact revenge on it as if it were a serial killer. "This thing has killed a lot of people. We thought you'd want to be involved in a little payback." Then later, a character is speaking to his dead adulterous lover "Well don't worry, your man's gonna kill that monster and cut out its eyes." WHAT????

Then of course there is an action segment in which Alten opens each paragraph or action with the word "Flash" in italics, LOL. Oh man, well that's what I mean when I say his writing reads like a terrible screenplay.

FLASH. Those are just a few of the particularly bad parts of the book. Hopefully you get the idea.

FLASH. Meg reads like an incredibly bad, straight-to-video movie.

FLASH. Perhaps Mr. Alten should give that type of writing a shot as his work seems to be more on that level--even that might be a slightly generous statement.

5 out of 5 stars A growing fan..........2007-07-15

The first book I read by Steve Alten was 'The Loch'. Once I read that I knew I had to read more by this guy. So I started with his first one... MEG. This book was absolutely thrilling and totally non-stop! Even when I was nearing the very, very end the action kept on and on and on and on and on...

This guy has a talent for telling a story and not boring us. Even during the "down" times that every novel has, it was STILL interesting! Don't miss out on this one yall!!

3 out of 5 stars Dead, dead, dead.......2007-06-24

After only reading 2 of his novels, I began to realize that it seemed like in every chapter (I know this is pushing it) someone dies. It began to be funny. I knew not to trust anyone to continue thru the story. I did enjoy them, however, not that much of a turnoff. Give us a break, Steve.

3 out of 5 stars It's ok; excellent story though.......2007-06-04

This was a good story, and it did keep me interested throughout. However, when compared to other authors, Steve Alten is just average. He doesn't develop characters well, nor does he do a great job of telling the smaller stories within the main story. I'll probably get the sequels despite this.

This book is fantastic! I have been reading it to my baby since he was a couple of months old. He is now nine months and picking it up on his own and "asking" to have it read. 5 out of 5 stars Adorable Swimmy Rhyme.......2004-05-14

This is an adorable picture book. The rhyme is skillfully written to hold the attention of the most wiggly of small children. They'll swim under the water meeting all kinds of sea creatures and be surprised at the end. The art, inspired by the text is fun and colorful. The illustrator nailed it! Children will read this over and over. Jan Peck has now, another excellent picturebook to her credit.

5 out of 5 stars Way down deep fun!.......2004-05-05

As in her previous picture book, The Giant Carrot, Jan Peck has created a fun and lively story with carefully chosen words to entice children to read and re-read this delightful adventure story. Full of fun sea creatures and lyrical language, Way Down Deep is stimulating both in listening to the story and the enjoyment of the bright illustrations. Well-done and worth owning!

5 out of 5 stars Way Down Deep is Oceans of fun and learning for children!.......2004-05-02

I am a children's writer who wishes he had written this book! Jan Peck has surely been touched by the hand of God. "The Giant Carrot" was a classic Ms. Peck created, but "Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea" will be read by generations of children too. The tight musical writing and beautiful illustrations will please every child--plus teach them rhythm and the names of sea creatures. On top of all this, the book shows the child the wonders of using his imagination. Buy your copy now, because the first edtion will become a collector's item. "Cat in the Hat" move over!

Something stopped Nita's hand as it ran along the bookshelf. She looked and found that one of the books had a loose thread at the top of its spine. It was one of those So You Want to Be a . . . books, a series on careers. So You Want to Be a Pilot, and a Scientist . . . a Writer. But his one said, So You Want to Be a Wizard.

I don't belive this, Nina thought. She shut the book and stood there holding it in
her hand, confused, amazed, suspicious--and delighted. If it was a joke, it was a great one. If it wasn't . . . ?

Thirteen-year-old Nita "Neets" Callahan, and her best friend, twelve-year-old Christopher "Kit" Rodriguez, never could have fathomed that they would become full-fledged wizards before they even hit high school. But the last few months have made it quite clear that that is exactly what has happened. Since coming across two separate copies of the mysterious book "So You Want to Be A Wizard..." both Nita and Kit have found themselves thrown into a tumultuous roller coaster ride filled with triumph, despair, and a whole lot of magic. Their first mission, leading them to a battle with the Lone Power, to protect Manhattan from succumbing to a lifetime of dark and cold was a success, but the two friends can't help but wonder if their future missions will have the same results. However, at the moment, neither one wants to think about it. In fact, all they want to do is contemplate the fun they'll have during their summer vacation. When Nita's parents announce that they'll be spending a glorious two weeks living beyond their means in a rented beach cottage in Southhampton, Nita is thrilled. She'll be able to cast away the muggy Manhattan weather for some rest and relaxation romping among the various beaches along the sunny, slightly tropical Southhampton shores, away from traffic, smog, and, hopefully, magic. While the vacation sounds thrilling to Nita, however, she can't help but feel as if she's abandoning Kit by leaving him all by his lonesome in the city. After all, they're used to relying on one another when it comes to magic, and can't even contemplate the trouble they'll be in if something should arise during their time apart. So, clearing it with her parents, Nita gets the okay for Kit to accompany her family on their eagerly awaited trip. The two can't wait to toss their jeans aside and don swimsuits for their two weeks out of city limits. But, from the very beginning, it's quite obvious that rest and relaxation are the last two things on their agenda. When Nita is approached by a dolphin while swimming the stress of the school year away, she calls upon Kit to assist her in aiding a fellow wizard in need. There's a catch, however. This wizard is not your typical, run-of-the-mill human. Rather, the wizard, who goes by the name of S'ree is a whale. To assist S'ree, both Kit and Nita must do something extremely foreign to them: shapeshift. It is only by completing this task that they will have the ability to join an exclusive group consisting of whales and dolphins that they will be able to take part in an ancient, and, unbeknownst to them, fairly deadly, ritual. Their task will not be easy. Not only do they have to find the strength, and ability within themselves to keep their human mind, and not become stuck in their sea creature bodies, but they must also face characters much more deadly, and frightening, than the Lone Power, such as the sharp-toothed Master Shark. Master Shark is another player in the deep-sea ritual, and he'll be doing something that he has much experience with - eating someone. The most terrifying thing is that the someone he'll be eating is one of the young wizards.

It has been quite some time since I first met the young wizards - Nita and Kit - within the pages of SO YOU WANT TO BE A WIZARD. Yet I instantly fell into a comfortable familiarity with them as I dove into DEEP WIZARDRY. It is obvious that, from the previous installment, and the horror that Nita and Kit overcame within the pages of SO YOU WANT TO BE A WIZARD has assisted them in growing - both mentally and physically. That newfound maturity is displayed quite a bit within the pages of DEEP WIZARDRY, as both Nita and Kit must face some extremely difficult, and grown-up issues, such as death, love, and family. Nita's difficulty in divulging the information regarding her powers to her family weighs heavily in this particular installment. While her younger sister, Dairine, seems to have already put two-and-two together to come to the conclusion that Nita has some sort of strange power, her parents are under the impression that she's sneaking around with Kit romantically. Nita is forced to reach deep within herself to find the strength to let her parents know the truth - even if they disown her for it. While it seems as if that is the largest struggle Nita must face within DEEP WIZARDRY, it doesn't quite compare with the growing feelings and attachment she has formed towards Kit. Feelings that are confusing and exciting at the same time. While Diane Duane hasn't made romance the main focus of the tale, she has floated the idea of the two young wizards someday getting together out there, making the reader attuned to the possibility. Kit, on the other hand, seems to have slightly more freedom than Nita within this tale, mainly because his parents are out of sight, and he only has the Callahan family to contend with. That does not leave him anymore reckless than before, however. In fact, it is within DEEP WIZARDRY that Kit shows an extremely protective side of his personality in his gestures to keep Nita safe; while, at the same time, he faces many inner struggles as he attempts to keep his human mind, even when in the body of a sea creature. Duane has, once again, penned a compelling story that keeps the reader engrossed, and excited to come back for more. Gripping from start to finish!

THIS BOOK COULD BE EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST!!! I can't even begin to exsplain how incredibly, unbelivably, insainly wonderful this book really is. From the vary first page where nita, goody good nita, trys to sneek out of the house without her mother noticing, I was instantly adicted. As in the fist book, and thouse to follow, the story is full. New characters are added and their meaning equally important. A thrilling tale that tests nita and kits newly found friendship, their will to do wizardry, their personal strength and mental will. Fear mixes with exileration in this epic underwater adventure. Unlike many serieses the second book esaly lives up to the freakishly high set bar of the first, even posibly sucseding it. I reconmend this book to anyone who likes deep thrilling fantaces. It is amazingly fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Two Wizards, Many whales and one Giant Shark!.......2006-11-28

Just to make sure, if you have not read Book One: "So, you Want to be a Wizard?", do not read this review, and do not read this book until you have finished book One, this is book 2. You will not understand very much if you skip book one and this book will lack depth for you. Ok, enough said. On to the actual review:
If I were to say a simple statement about this book, it would be shortened to a simple "Wow", period. But, there's always more to a book than saying "wow" and leaving it at that.

So, the story follows two young wizards: Nita Callahan and Kit Rodriguez, who have just finished fighting the manipulative "Lone Power" in Manhattan (See book one "So, You want to be a Wizard?") they are now on vaction at a beach, or so they thought. After going for a smim, Nita encounters a dolphin who knows the new senior(essentially the "most wise and educated" wizard) of that area and soon the two wizards are sent head over heels into a huge ceremony that may be more than they bargained for.

Nita starts by rescuing the stranded senior, tranferring her blood to save the dying whale, S'reee, and is then asked to help in the ritual that is performed each year to bind the Lone Power at the Bottom of the Sea before it can recreate the fate Atlantis suffered. S'reee tells the young wizards that she needs help, and of course, Nita and Kit volunteer. Nita offers to sing as the "Silent Lord", but during the Song of Twelve, many of the whale wizards sing the ritual songs as they have done many times, but they also enact the fates of those singers as well. And that means that Nita has to do what the Silent Lord did so long ago: accept the deadly gift of the Lone Power and then kill death by sacrificing herself to the Pale Slayer... A giant Shark!

With her mind on the song and how she will deal with her oath, Nita and Kit also have to worry about Nita's parents who are growing suspicious, and Nita's nosy sister, Dairine. As they move forward, Nita discovers that the Pale Slayer, Ed, has more to him than a cold, matter of fact killing machine and that his views on life, though he is not a wizard is not entirely wrong... even if that means Nita will have to die.

A moving, accurate book with whales, sacrifice and thrills beyond the scope of the normal seas! Fantastic Read! (Look for the next book "High Wizardry, Book 3 if you liked this one).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A hit with our 1 year old!.......2006-09-03

This book is fun to read; it is rhythmic and the story builds page by page. It's different than most children's books: big, simple, crisp and bright (computer generated?). My son gives a little giggle when we pull it out.
