Book Description
"Forcing animals to live in captivity, to perform for our pleasure, to die for our needs is justified only if animals are essentially different from us. Some feel animals do not suffer because they do not feel as we do. But what if they only differ from us in degree, not in kind?" -- So writes Betsy Wyckoff in her introduction to these twenty-three beautifully illustrated anecdotes and accounts of wondrous facts, truths, and episodes from many areas of the animal kingdom, showing the sometimes unbearable and always poignant kinship we share with other creatures. Besides material about apes and bees, the book brings intimate glimpses (to mention but a few specimen pieces) of grieving elephants, tool-using otters, communication among bats, cooperation among lionesses, mindful dolphins, and of course, singing Humpback Whales." "Why is it important that we view animals as thinking, feeling creatures?" Betsy Wyckoff asks. "We identify with beings similar to us and objectify those we perceive as different. Turning a living creature into an object is a diminishing act. We form a chain with our animal cousins, and to diminish one member of the chain is to diminish all." -- The last piece in the book is devoted to the subject of animal altruism, "the willingness of an individual to sacrifice himself or herself to benefit another." -- The author documents altruism practiced by family members of the same species among dolphins, chimpanzees, lions, zebras and even rats, and goes on to show that altruism can even be found across species and between nonrelated individuals, the latter implying "the existence of compassion and generosity" among animals -- "emotions that belie a mechanistic view of animal life." -- The book includes a detailed bibliography of further readings in animal ethology (some 60 items) and lists of periodicals and organizations dedicated to a concern for wildlife.

Customer Reviews:
Solid Journal.......2006-03-09
I've used this journal for 10+ years now. I like it's layout and functionality.
Just began and loving it!.......2005-01-29
I have just started to use this training diary, my 4th week, and it is wonderful.
The feature I enjoy the most of all in the weekly entries is the amount of space available to write on each day's workout and performance! Plus, the daily weight recording area is big enough to include your body fat percentage too. The summary space is perfect for any comments that you have for that week's runs.
This is my first bought training journal, and I look forward to filling it up!
Spiral Bound.......2005-01-13
One of the main reasons I like this diary so much is that it is spiral bound. You can't tell from the Amazon photo. So I keep it open to the week I'm running in to make entries quick.
I have been keeping track of my runs for 5 years with these diaries - they have enough room in them for one year of dates and comments. The comments area for each day gives you enough room for a few sentences.
For me, a casual runner/10K'er who does about 500 miles a year, I feel that keeping a diary has kept me going. It is alarming to see that I already can't go as fast as I used to, but I've run a total of more miles each year. The used/resold versions are only a few bucks.
Drop the Days of the Week.......2002-11-28
I guess I'm being picky. Okay I know Sunday is really the first day of the week but for those of us tracking miles by week (especially important for building your bases so you don't over do it) you usually can't break the weekend apart. Sometimes due to your time schedule you can train long on Saturday and sometimes you have to do it on Sunday. Let's say your building for a marathon. You do 5 - five milers during the week and a 15 mile run on Sunday. Next week you do the same but have to do the 15 on Saturday. According to the book you did 25 miles one week and 55 miles the next. How's that for tracking weekly miles? The better training log's leave the days of the week blank so you can fill it in. And yes I know you could always cross out the days of the week in this log and rewrite it but why should you have to?
Great Tool.......2002-02-20
I started running about 4 months before I bought this Training Diary - and now I wish that I'd started keeping the diary as soon as I started running.
I find it a useful motivational tool - if I've set myself a goal for the week and don't feel like running one day, I look at my goal and know how disappointed I'll be at the end of the week if I don't achieve my goal. Therefore I go for a run!

The Road More Traveled: Why the Congestion Crisis Matters More Than You Think, and What We Can Do About It
ASIN: 0815719299 |
Book Description
Congested roads waste commuters' time, cost them money, and degrade the environment. Most Americans agree that traffic congestion is the major problem in their communitiesand it only seems to be getting worse.
In this revised and expanded edition of his landmark work Stuck in Traffic, Anthony Downs examines the benefits and costs of various anticongestion strategies. Drawing on a significant body of research by transportation experts and land-use planners, he counters environmentalists and road lobbyists alike by explaining why seemingly simple solutions, such as expanding public transit or expanding roads, have unintended consequences that cancel out their apparent advantages. He argues that while there might be some measurable gains from increasing housing densities, most other land-use strategies have little effect. Indeed, the most powerful solutions, including higher gasoline taxes, increased public funding for transit, and highway tolls, are also the least palatable politically.
Still Stuck in Traffic contains new material on the causes of congestion, its dynamics, and its relative incidence in various parts of the country. In clear and realistic terms, Downs seeks to explore why traffic congestion has become part of modern American life and how it can be kept under control.

Stuck No More Workbook!: The Defense Busters
ASIN: 0972300457 |
Book Description
Dr. Monti offers a unique, breakthrough examination of the devastating impact that unconscious psychological defenses can have on individuals--and how the crippling patterns of those defenses can be identified and broken. Written with humor and compassion, each of forty-one defenses is throughly profiled and fifteen steps in defense busting are presented in detail.
Customer Reviews:
Heart, healing and humor in a practical resource.......2004-01-28
Clinicians and their patients will benefit equally from reading and USING Dr. Monti's insightful, well organized, and clearly written discussion of the defenses we use to protect ourselves. After describing the mechanisms by which we choose defenses that fit our innate personality types and respond to childhood traumas, whether grave or seemingly insignificant, Dr. Monti helps the reader to learn more about why their defensive behavior no longer serves them. Honest self-appraisal, based on compassion for the child that developed these defenses in order to survive, can be done in a logical and safe context using this book and its accompanying workbook. The result is a heightened level of awareness that leads to change.
I have recommended this book to dozens of patients, and use it in group and individual therapy as a framework for psychological healing in a practical, yet profound, process.
Finally, a guide book for daily life!!.......2003-11-27
Starting with the title, I was hooked. Though on the outside my life looked good, on the inside I felt literally stuck and I didn't know why or more importantly how to change. Dr. Nicki Monti breaks down personal defenses with such clarity, humor and real life scenarios, that I was able to see how I created defense mechanisms that were keeping me from the life I so desperately wanted. The book and the practical/user friendly workbook was a wonderful investment towards my future happiness. In my work, I consider this book to be a useful "behavioral dictionary" for staff management.
I saw results immediately, really. After reading the section on Perfectionism, I was able to recognize that my deep insecurities were only being masked with the need for others to see me as perfect. Perfect is impossible to achieve so I was actually proving to myself that I wasn't "good enough" everyday. This cycle (or stuckness) might never have ended unless I accepted that sometimes good is good enough. What a relief! Now, I could make a mistake or even ask for help which is amazing for a Perfectionist! As I relaxed so did those around me and my relationships became more emotionally intimate as a result.
Control was another chapter that blew my daily operating system apart. My childhood was filled with several incidents that were completely beyond mine or anyone else's control and I became a "control freak" as an adult. What I learned in this chapter is that what I was actually looking for was safety. If I could just Control my life, home, work and everything else then I would never be caught off guard again, right? Not only did this habit of control NOT keep me safe from life's changes, it also kept me from romantic intimacy. I was so busy keeping things together; I didn't allow the possibility of "accidentally" meeting someone special. When I started to release control I found that I could handle life's challenges and the best part of all, I happened to bump into a wonderful man that is now my fiancé. This book is brilliant and a great gift because everyone can relate to feeling stuck sometimes.

puncturing illusions.......2002-11-22
This book rebuts both environmentalists and road lobbyists, by explaining why neither expanded transit nor expanded roads will have significant impacts upon congestion: expanded transit is of minimal value because it affects so few people (except perhaps in downtowns), expanded roads don't work because of what Downs calls "triple convergence" -- when a road is built it fills up because (1) drivers who used alternative routes switch to the new or widened road, (2) drivers who avoided rush hour start traveling during rush hour, and (3) drivers who used public transit switch to the improved expressway. (And triple convergence doesn't even take into account the long-run congestion that results when people move to be near a widened or new expressway, thus causing additional ridership increases). The only solution is to reduce demand for transportation, by encouraging ride sharing through tolls, fuel tax increases and other unpopular steps. In short, the most effective ways of reducing congestion are also the least politically popular.
Downs Explains How Hard it is to Reduce Traffic Congestion.......2000-07-01
I have used Anthony Downs, "Stuck in Traffic" for three years for a short course in urban transportation planning. Students find it clear and yet realistic on how simplistic solutions like "building more highway lanes" have unintended consequences that cancel out the gains.
He also looks at urban planning solutions, and shows that some gains might occur from increasing housing densities from very low to low or moderate, but most other solutions have little effect.
Finally, the most powerful solutions, including higher gasoline taxes, increased public funding for transit, and tolling on highways are also the least palatable politically.
Downs, an economist, is strong on the economic aspects of transportation, and has a good grasp on the planning issues. The book does not cover any of the engineering details of possible schemes.
Overall, an clearly written and strongly argued book.

Book Description
After a yelling match with his dad, teenaged Kevin went skiing and suffered a fatal accident. Since his death seven months ago, he has quickly adjusted to the afterlife in Nirvanaville -spending time with his girlfriend Nicole in a heavenly world of singing flowers, talking pets, and endless games.
His idyllic lifestyle is shattered when he volunteers to deliver a letter to his girlfriend's mother on Earth. A motorcycle crash lands him in jail and puts him face-to-face with Morty, a menacing "dweller" who prefers to spend the afterlife wreaking havoc on humankind.
Stripped of his powers, Kevin cannot return to Nirvanaville until he takes care of "unfinished business" - repairing the fragile relationship with his father. Convincing his dad-who is also the prosecuting attorney in Kevin's trial-that he's come back from the dead won't be easy. And if they can't reconcile their differences . . . Kevin will be stuck down on Earth forever.
Customer Reviews:
This Book Will Keep You Stuck Down Reading!.......2005-07-25
I absolutely loved this book! Special delivery? You bet! Kevin has to deliver a message to Nicole's (his best friend) mom on Earth. But, poor Kevin finds himself stuck down until he can rekindle his relationship with his lawyer-father. I simply could not put this book down. Ms. Rosenbloom weaves an exciting tale from here to Nirvanaville.
Devilish Fun About An Earthbound Angel!.......2005-06-30
Kevin's death would be a tragedy if he wasn't having so much fun in the afterlife; hanging out with a girlfriend, zooming on clouds and doing almost anything he wants. Still, he can't resist returning to Earth when he gets a chance to deliver a letter to his girlfriend's mother. So he hops on a motorcyle and roars back to Earth. Only things go wrong and he ends up in jail and accused of crimes in a courtroom with a prosecuting attorney he knows too well -- his own father!
This is a creative, exciting and intriguing book. It explores the concept of afterlife, while offering a thrilling adventure. The author's legal experience shines through and adds a sense of reality to this out-of-this-world story.
Don't miss out on this unique and wonderful book. Have fun reading!
