Larson presents a grand introduction to forested freshwater wetlands in Florida, where water and trees dominate. He presents a skillful blend of scientific background (including technical references) and personal experiences, particularly in Highland Hammocks State Park and Fakahatchee Strand. He starts with a description and formation of the major areas including depression marshes in Okefenokee and Pinhook swamp basin swamps, and the nearby (to me) Shrub bogs in the prosaically named "Tate's Hell" and flooded river areas as along the Apalachicola, and Strands in South Florida.
The majority of the book goes through different plant and animal classes, and the book shines by its broad coverage. There is sure to be an introduction to something new to each reader. For example, I did not know that the weight of fungi per acre is about equal to a small car or that up to 50 species of river fish may feed in an adjacent flooded swamp. For bird watchers, the tales of the Ivory Bill are most exciting, in light of current searches. Larson closes this section with tales of the enigmatic black bear and Florida panther.
He closes the book with the call for education and advocacy for the wetland, and I would add basic care of oil after an oil change and safe storage of pesticides and chemicals.

Excellent book.......2007-04-05
This book is an excellent read, but keep in mind it was written by mechanical engineers, I am a an electrical engineer and never got heavy into fluid flows so this book did me great justice. Someone mentioned that it does not mention forced induction in the text. With forced induction you are not particularly concerned about intake side, for exhaust side all you have to do is adjust the pressures to how ever many bar you are running, or as this book writes it into lbs/in squared, these equations are based off of perfect afr so figuring out the exhaust output pressure is not all that tough.
All in all I gave this a book a 4 because it is exactly what it says it is, but supplemental reading on fluid flows is a really good idea, if not a must... this book is more of highlights the fluids theories in intake and exhaust systems for you.
Excellent book.......2004-02-26
The information in this book is just as relavant now as it was when it was written back in 1972. Physics is physics, after all. The book gave me a much clearer understanding of header theory. My only complaint is that Smith and Morrison obviously wrote this book for engineers, and I'm not one. I had to struggle to understand some of the concepts, particularly on tri-y header design; but in the end, it was definitely worth it. The exhaust concepts are equally applicable to carbs and fuel injection. The only things lacking were crossovers and merge collectors, but I guess those things weren't invented in 1972. This book will give you a basic grounding in header design theory, and will enable you to discern a set of well-designed headers from a useless tangle of pipes. If you plan on building a set of custom headers, this book is definitely required reading.
In desperate need of updating!.......2003-07-27
Very outdated. I regret not having read the reviews here prior to purchasing this book. The last time this book was updated was 1972! There is nothing in the way of forced induction. Turbochargers are not mentioned and there is a single reference to superchargers on page 17! "Fuel Injector" is mentioned once. I am definitely sending this one back. Not the first time I have been disappointed with Bentley Publishing. FYI, 1972 was the year Pong came out. As I said, the book desperately needs to be updated.

I have designed race cars for years and I definitely recommend this book. I found information in this book that I have not seen published anywhere else. It explains how tri-y headers work. It explains the theory behind pulse tuning of exhaust and intakes. The intake pulse tuning is the basis of why Porsche created intake manifolds that effectively change between several intake runner lengths. These theories are even backed up by proven test results performed by engineers. There are even simple equations that are directly applicable to designing an intake or exhaust. This book is "old" but then so is the 4-stroke engine and although today's engines may seem "new" they are fundamentally the same as the "old" ones which makes the material in this book very worthwhile. If you want to know more than what intake or exhaust you should *buy* and are possibly thinking about creating your own intake or exhaust system, definitely buy this book. If you are looking for a book like this but even more technical, I suggest the 2 volumes titled "The Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice" by Charles Fayette Taylor.
Stuck in the '60's.......1999-11-23
I read the book cover to cover. My impression is that this book contains exhaust and intake design information that was current in the 50's and '60s. Very little information for modern 4 or 5 valve per cylinder engines, and fuel injection tuned intake systems. No information on practical design of V8 performance exhaust system for street emmissions legal exhaust. Needs updated.

Spanish Verb Tenses workbook is great!.......2007-10-12
This workbook is the best spanish aid that I've used. A person just can't communicate with just nouns and adjectives. They need a good working knowledge of verbs. This book takes you through the tenses, and spends 79 pages on just the present tense, working through all the irregulars, stem-changing verbs, etc. There are a total of 226 pages of workbook-type work, then some appendices, spanish-english glossary, and the answer key. The last page is 305. About every 6-7 pages is a paragraph to translate into spanish. It makes a person think. One thing about this book is that even though there is a small english-spanish dictionary in the back, you'll need another bigger dictionary, since many words are not in their dictionary. This is a great investment. I would buy it again, knowing what I know now.

This is an excellent book. Lots of great information, written in an easy to understand format.I just finished a class on spanish, and only after reading this book, and doing the excercises am I starting to really understand.

As Spanish verb resources go, Practice Makes Perfect is almost as good as
Christopher Kendris's 501 Spanish Verbs.
When you have to go to Mexico on business, with no knowledge of Spanish at all, and with just two weeks to learn to speak the language, you do whatever you can to learn.
I bought and tried everything, including this book. It is good and I learned a lot from it.

How I am successfully using this book to become more conversational in Spanish? .......2007-06-25
This book is fantastic for teaching Spanish grammar for verb tenses. It goes great with a Spanish verb conjugation book such as 501 Spanish verbs. One of the most interesting things about this book is the vocabulary that you will learn. I was only expecting to learn how to conjugate verbs with this book. But I learned Spanish verb conjugation and so many new vocabulary words that I was able to put to use almost immediately with Spanish speakers. The exercises were also fun to do, and I never felt bored when studying with this book.
Many people say that you should first learn how to speak the language and reach an intermediate conversational level before attempting to study the grammar from a book. I disagree. I have used this book with my favorite Spanish course, Learning Spanish Like Crazy, and I am very happy with the progress that I have made. And I feel that this book has helped me to develop a better understanding of "why" sentences are said the way that they are in Spanish. Learning Spanish Like Crazy is probably the best self-study course for learning authentic Spanish from this side of the Atlantic, but it left me with certain questions about using Spanish verbs. But I have been able to use this book to successfully fill in those gaps and become more conversational. If you are truly serious about speaking fluent Spanish, then you'll want to order this book.

Not just another dry grammar book, this book has fun activities that will have you hunting for parts of speech and grammatical errors. There is everything from art projects to scavenger hunts. What About Anna? was a beautiful book about a lost girl. Anna is lost, sad, and pushes everyone away until something in her changes. This book was VERY good, but depressing at someparts, and left me hanging at the end. We need a sequel!

From the author: Nearly half of teenagers in this study handled ache as a transient condition; girls significantly more often than boys. Moreover, the false belief that acne is a transient condition was more frequently observed in subjects without ache than in patients with ache. The study concludes general knowledge about ache among adolescents is limited, and an educational program should be specially designed for this group.
