5 out of 5 stars A winner for all levels of birders.......2007-08-10

This beautifully written book will appeal to all levels of birders, from novices to experts. It is a great introduction to the lives of songbirds (and would make a wonderful gift for someone you hope to interest in birds), and it also includes some historical background and news of the latest research that dedicated birders will find interesting. That's a difficult balance to achieve, but Chu has done it magnificently. Especially useful (for all levels of birders) is the copious concrete information about things we can do to improve the lives of songbirds and projects in which we can help. My Christmas shopping got a lot easier when I read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Invitation to Birding.......2007-08-07

Birds are so all around us, it is not surprising that we might take them for granted, especially the songbirds that can be found in any backyard or feeder. Almost half the 10,000 species of birds on Earth are songbirds, the jays, larks, swallows, wrens, warblers, and others which have complex voiceboxes. They may be commonplace, but that does not mean that we know all there is about them. Many of them have complicated migration routes and behaviors that ornithologists have only in the past decades come to understand. The migratory songbirds of the Americas are covered in _Songbird Journeys: Four Seasons in the Lives of Migratory Birds_ (Walker Books) by Miyoko Chu. Ornithologists say that most of the birds of North America evolved over many millennia in the tropics and gradually pushed their boundaries northwards. Some came and stayed, and others developed the pattern of coming north in the warmer months to take advantage of the food supply and to bring forth the next generation before returning to warmer climes for the winter. There are literally billions of birds involved in this passage, but capacity to track them has been technologically available only in recent years, and Chu, an ornithologist at the renowned Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, brings readers up to date with scientific news about a remarkable research frontier.

As fascinated as humans have always been by birds, there were limits of perception in tracking the migrants. Chu gives a brief history of how hard it was to track these birds that do most of their travel at night before they could be seen on radar. Of course, tracking with radar required correlation with ground observations, and observers have a lot of work during the weeks that birds stream in to regions like our Gulf Coast. Chu describes the procedures for coastal Louisiana, where "mist nets" of a mesh so fine the birds cannot see them are set up to trap them. Among the surprising ways of tracking birds is though analyzing their blood for specific elemental isotopes; geographic areas differ in the levels of such isotopes, so a bird staying in a particular region picks up particular isotopes, which can be analyzed to see where the bird has been. A surprising new way to watch birds at night is to listen for their nocturnal calls. Determined (and sleep-deprived) observers eventually pinned down which calls went with which birds, allowing a technological breakthrough in nighttime birdwatching. Borrowing computer software used to pick out whale songs from other undersea noises, observers can point microphones at the sky and allow computers to monitor just what is passing overhead. And anyone who wants to can take part: thirty bucks will buy you a rooftop microphone to feed the sounds into a home computer, for the downloadable software to analyze.

This illustrates one of the most attractive parts of Songbird Journeys. Throughout the book are not just reports of what we already know, but invitations to get involved in helping to know more. Chu's delightful book follows the inescapable modern tradition of justified fretting over what will happen to its subjects; global warming, communications towers, illegal caging, pesticides, deforestation (at either end of the journey), acid rain, and more have made life hard (or impossible) for some migratory species. The book is, however, pleasantly optimistic in asserting that more information will find better answers, and suggesting that any reader might participate. There are not only instructions on how and when to visit the areas of research listed here, but also exhortations to consider setting up birdhouses and recording how they are used, taking part in a one day Christmas bird count (it's not on Christmas, but on a specific day chosen between 14 December and 5 January) to identify species of birds within specific regions, or simply to enter readings in The Great Backyard Bird Count, with no travel requirements. Chu shows repeatedly how small bits of information, summed with other small bits, have made a difference in our understanding of how birds live. This would be a lovely book especially for young people who are interested in how natural science is done and want to do some.

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginning birders.......2007-06-06

I read this book as part of my exercises to complete my activities for the book "Forty Excuses to Get Together with the Girls," specifically "Excuse #10: Because I Want to Know that Bird's Name." (This is a chapter that has step-by-step instructions on how to start watching birds. The book has 39 other chapters devoted to other areas of interest.) I am a beginning birder and so much of the information was new and fascinating to me and it really helped put my local expeditions in a much larger perspective. I found myself picking it up every once in awhile for a birding "fix."

5 out of 5 stars Bird Migration.......2007-03-15

This book provides a comprehensive and exciting desctiption of the amazing achievements of migrating birds in covering incredibly long distances without stopping to get to their summer or winter homelands. It is a well-written document, pleasurable and informative to read, and I recommend it to every potential, new, and experienced bird watcher.

5 out of 5 stars Gives you a lot to think about.......2007-01-11

Very informative but written in a documentary style so don't think you'll be sitting down for a leisurely read. This is heavy stuff if you love songbirds. Fifty percent of all songbirds die each year, most during migration - the rest through habitat loss, predators, etc. That's the heavy stuff; but you'll learn so much about their songs, survival techniques, and so on. Extremely interesting but not an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Easy reading! Hard to put down!.......2004-05-11

Jack does a wonderful job in "Season at the Point." Even for those who have never birded at Cape May, the book is truly entertaining and informative. The book was very easy to read, and Jack's descriptions are very detailed. Even if you live far away from Cape May Point, this a great book to own. It is astounding to read about the number and variety of birds seen at this spot over the years. The commentary on the characters that frequent CMBO is great! Jack was one of my college professors and was so knowledgeable on birds that I decided to purchase his book. What a great investment! Thanks, Jack.- Anthony J. Chodan

      5 out of 5 stars A gentle, yet high-impact book.......2000-07-17

This is a book of many moods, and all of them well-written. It is, by turns, a giggle-provoking acocunt of the eccentricities of those strange folks who watch birds, a warmly nostalgic portrait of the Cape May that once was, a fascinating account of the on-the-spot naturalism that goes on during migrations, and a compelling call for action to preserve the remaining natural beauty of this unique point in the otherwise wasted state of New Jersey. Though it is definitely a sedate read, it is a pleasant one.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe not the best read for a beginner.......2007-03-08

Highly detailed in every description ... too much for my beginner status. I seemed to overthink everything and couldn't group my shots as well as before. I will pull it out again after I have more practice under my quiver. This is, however, a great book to tweak your technique in areas you might not have even given any thought. The section on keeping your bow in tune is very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Advice you can take tothe bank.......2004-04-14

I found this book excellent and one of the few target archer resources that provides pointed guidance that you can "take to the bank". Steve Ruis even answered some tuning questions directly. This book also has pieces from other archers that are poignant and enjoyable reading. I took the Larry Wise Core Archery class and found the section in this book written by Larry to be an excellent review of class material. Learning to shoot using Back Tension is not an overnight endeavor, however this book can get you there sooner than a trial-and-error effort.

Precision Archery is a new book brought to you by the folks who publish this magazine. The book is a collection of articles written by some of the foremost experts in archery today: Rick McKinney, Don Rabska, Larry Wise, M.J. Rogers, and several others. It is geared toward recurve and compound target archers who wish to raise their shooting abilities and increase their general archery knowledge. You will find chapters dealing with shot execution, physical conditioning, and advanced form for recurve and compound archery, as well as an inspirational chapter entitled "Embracing the Spirit of Archery."

When I first saw the cover an immediate alarm bell rang. It appeared to be yet one more book that was trying to be "everything to everybody." The phrases "target shooting, field competition, and bow hunting" seemed to imply that this book may be taking on too much. Anybody who claims be an expert on all these areas is probably a master of none. When I saw that it was, in fact, a collection of works by multiple authors it made more sense; each writer stays within his or her range of expertise.
Rick McKinney, one of the world's greatest Olympic-style archers, contributes a fine chapter called "Exploring Competition." In it, he lays out why competition may be good for you (if you're not doing it) and (if you are) how to better prepare for it. Don Rabska, one of the top technical gurus, writes on "Advanced Form for Recurve Archers." While I don't shoot recurve, I still found this to be one of the best chapters in the book. He starts with proper stance, and moves on to each component of an archer's form: bow hand, shoulder placement, and form execution. His final section is called "Connecting with the Target" and explains something I have personally found very mysterious. Why are my shots smooth and effortless close to the target but not further away? I found Rabska's answer to this phenomenon most enlightening.
Compound archers have their technical guru, too; namely Larry Wise. Larry details the steps in shot execution with many photographs. I found it curious that there was no photo showing the release hand anchoring on the jaw, given the importance of this. While there is no doubt that Larry's explanations are technically accurate, I didn't always find the information useful. For example, Larry defines back tension as ". . . the contraction of the dominant or drawing side rhomboid muscles, aided by the levator scapula muscle, which causes a micro sliding rotation of the scapula toward the spine." Right. I'll keep that in mind next time I'm at full draw. (I think not!)
Tuning recurve and compound bows are covered by Rabska and Ruis. If you have been around archery for long, this material may not be new for you, but it's still worthwhile to have for a reference. The chapter "Perfecting Practice" does cover some new ground. Relatively little has been written about this, which is puzzling to me. More efficient use of practice time will make far more difference in your tournament results than about anything else you can do. While the author makes a good start on this subject, I feel it still needs to be explored further. If you consider the volumes of material that have been written on training for other sports, material on training for archery seems nearly non-existent.
Other chapters include "Executing the Shot" by Ruis and Stevenson, "Tuning the Mind" by Lisa Franseen, "Achieving a Physical Edge" by Annette M. Musta, "Coaching and Being Coached" by M.J. Rogers, and many others (14 chapters total). I found the last chapter, "Embracing the Spirit of Archery" by Claudia Stevenson very inspirational. This chapter puts into words many of the feelings that have been at the back of my mind about archery for years. Stevenson attempts to answer the question: just why do we frustrate ourselves with archery? She cites the power of self knowledge that archery can teach us and the sense of community that archers develop as two of the reasons.
I found "Precision Archery" a very worthwhile addition of my archery library. It is well written, attractively bound, and has a nice reference in the back, listing sources for more information. One note of caution: if you are looking for material on bowhunting, this is not the book for you, even though the cover suggests otherwise. Actually, the phrase "bow hunting" was on the cover by mistake. The editors told me that book is strictly for target shooters, although I suspect bowhunters would learn a lot about shooting a bow from it. And while much of the material was not new to me, it is very convenient to have it located in a single source. I doubt that there is a single archer who will not learn something from this book. For example, much to my dismay, the recent elevation of my indoor scores may be due entirely to the "Hawthorne effect." What the heck is that, you ask? Well, you will just have to read the book to find out!

This book is required for my online English Composition and it has been helpful for online editing and critiquing. Best part is that Amazon shipped it fast so I got it in one day!

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2007-10-01

I am currently enrolled in graduate school, and the professors are very strict with written reports and proposals. The Writer's Reference is an excellent tool to use as a guide in APA, MLA, and Chicago style format. I have to use the APA format for school and the information within the guide is easy to read and very user friendly. I am doing very well with my written assignments and I truly love Ms. Hacker's reference materials she is excellent with details. I recommend this as a must buy for any grad student.

Bronwyn Lewis is a sixteen-year-old girl who has just been forced to move to Ojala, California with her family. The year is 1960. Bron is a good student, and has always lived life by the rules. It doesn't take long for her to realize if she doesn't change herself, she will not fit in with the carefree, easygoing teens in town. A popular interest of these individuals is drag racing, something that Bron wrongly thought she would never experience herself. Soon she meets J.C., an extremely attractive racer, and Will, a down-to-earth, old-fashioned country guy. She gets caught between them, and some interesting things occur with both men. I guess you could say she has a lot of things on her mind, including her reckless friend Lanie, the legendary horrific fires of Ojala, the profits of her family business, and her life's turn for romance and adventure. Hobbs really brings Bron's story to life through her dense plot and rising action. There is an overwhelming mood this book gives you through Bron's interactions with other characters. I really started to enjoy the book as the number of friendships and relationships Bron aquires increased. The ending really left me thinking because there is a distinct mystery to it. The genre is a combination of coming-of-age, adventure, and romance; no single genre would be fit by itself in my opinion. I really felt like I knew the characters personally as the plot thickened. I would definatly recommend this book to anyone. If an adult were to read it, he or she would have a good idea of the aspects of American teenagers' lives.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS THE BEST TEEN NOVEL.......2002-06-12

I think this was a great book because it captured the life of a teen girl. Some thing she did reminded me of my friend who is exatly like Bron. I would recomend this book to everyone. I think adults should also read this book so they can get and understanding of a teens life. Some parents dont understand Teens. Eveyone but this book its worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars it is a really good book!.......2000-04-05

this is a really good book! it gives good insight on a teen girl's point of view on things. not only that, but it is fast paced! i got in bed to read at nine and stayed up until two to finish it! belive me, you will like this book!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for young women and their PARENTS!.......1999-08-27

As an adult I was very moved by the story, especially the insight into the thoughts of a young woman. There was a "true story" feeling in the Bron's experiences. A must read for parents of young people...lots of insight into the need to "belong". Hobbs has done a superb writing job!

                                  5 out of 5 stars I absolutely loved it........1999-05-24

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It made me laugh and cry and fall in love with every bit of it. The author was so great and I hope that I can get to read more of her books, soon. I just loved it, if you haven't read it then you need to. You have no idea what you're missing.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.........2007-05-01

"How Far Would You Have Gotten If I Hadn't Called You Back?" is something of a Western-styled Judy Blume romance. As such, if you are a parent purchasing this book for your teenaged daughter, you'd better be sure that she is ready for a certain amount of frankness about sexuality.

There is a nice, laid-back warmth and briskness to Ms. Hobbs' writing. Most of the characters are well-drawn, and the story moves along well. But, I would fault the book for a certain laziness that is typical of the genre. Details of the period (the 50's) are mixed with slang and pop references from much later decades (did people really say "friggin'" in the Fifties? Was Aqua-Net the hairspray of choice--or did it even exist then?).

The ultimate example of her laziness is that she tabbed one of the narrator's Welsh uncles with the name "Taffy" (You know, "Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief"...and la de dah), apparently because she couldn't be bothered with researching real Welsh names.

If Hobbs had tried harder, and painted with broad themes instead of a lot of drips and drabs---she might have been able to put together a real classic, in the vein of Richard Bradford's "Red Sky at Morning" or John Nichols' "Wizard of Loneliness", because much of this novel is pleasantly surprising, for a book written expressedly for the "youth" genre.

In the end, however, this is just an acceptably good book that could have been much, much more.

Bronwyn Lewis is sure that her life is over when her family packs up from her hometown in New Jersey and settles into the dusty, small town of Ojala, California to help her father recover from his "accident". At sixteen, Bronwyn has left everything she's known: her bestfriend, her boyfriend, her school, and her home. Now she is living in an attic of a shabby rented house while her parents are running a resturant downstairs and trying to make the best of it. As she tries to fit in, Bronwyn does encounter some real obstacles in her path.

Set in the 1960's, this is a classic novel of a teenage girl and the trials she face. Though a bit long and drawn out, readers will enjoy the heart of the story.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite book.......2006-12-15

This book was the best book I've ever read! I felt so connected to the characters and the story was so great! I had to re-read it three times and lend it to all my friends!

1 out of 5 stars Are you tired?.......2006-07-30

Because if you are, then this book is for you! Ok, where to begin? I read the book and hated it!! It was so dull and boring. It did get good but, not for very long before you fell asleep again. And to get to the good part you had to read at least a 100 pages into it. Only if your really commitied to the book you'll stay through it. It reminds me of something I would be forced to read for school. I wouldn't reccommend this book. Overall in my opinion it was dry, dull, boring, and not memorable.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Wow...........2006-03-31

Well, my title says it all. Wow. I read this book in seventh grade and I am going to buy it so that
I can re-read it now. Few books that I read have ever moved me so much. I have never cried in any other book and rarely do in movies. Toward the end of this book, I was sobbing. My mother and father both read it as well and agreed in the greatness of it.(Which is suprising because we are extermely different in our books of choice). I wish this book were more well known because I enjoyed it more than any book I have read in school so far. I strongly recomend it to any one looking for a great read.
