Book Description
For the past twenty-five years John Moore has taught biology instructors how to teach biology--by emphasizing the questions people have asked about life through the ages and the ways natural philosophers and scientists have sought the answers. This book makes Moore's uncommon wisdom available to students in a lively and richly illustrated account of the history and workings of life. Employing a breadth of rhetoric strategies--including vividly written case histories, hypotheses and deductions, and chronological narrative--Science as a Way of Knowing provides not only a cultural history of biology but also a splendid introduction to the procedures and values of science.

Interesting description of the scientific process.......1998-01-12
This is a great book for non-scientists who want to know how the scientific thought process works. Moore takes us through the history of biological thought, from the first cavemen to the geneticists of this century. Non-biologists may get bogged down in the last few technical chapters on genetics and development, but the sections on the history of biology are a great read for anyone.

The Outdoor Survival Handbook.......2007-09-14
The subtitle of this book is: a guide to the resources and materials available in the wild and how to use them for food, shelter, warmth, and navigation. The author has parceled out his observations, instruction and advise according to the four seasons. So rather than having a single chapter on types of shelter which one could locate or construct in the wilderness within the various climates or seasons, he parcels out this information over the four main chapters of the book. He does this for each category of survival: shelter, fire, water, cordage, and food. His intention seems to be that the reader use the book as an introductory survival course beginning in the spring, focusing on the particular type of shelter shown in that chapter and not getting distracted by other types that either cannot or need not be built then.
There is some sense to this kind of organization, but yet he leaves any discussion of hygiene or cooking, for example, until the summer chapter, when surely this information would have been just as relevant to the spring. If you have to at least selectively read ahead anyway to be better informed, why not just organize the book from the start so that the categories of survival occur as separate chapters, with the special circumstances of each season being discussed within the category, rather than breaking the content of the category across the four seasons? But the organization according to seasons allows the author to focus upon nature as it lives in each season, which seems to be as important to him as the types of shelter or the various methods of starting a fire.
The book is well illustrated and feels quite accessible. There is quite a bit of useful information on tinder and laying out fuel for a fire, even though it doesn't all occur, as it logically should, in a single chapter; and there is much, also, on cordage, but again, not all in one place. Because of the large and clear illustrations, it seems a good enough first book on wilderness survival. It does not overwhelm the reader with detail, but for some readers it is that very complexity of detail and a more rigorous organization that would be missed.
Handy pocketguide.......2007-06-01
An excellent and handy pocketguide to survival, Ray Mears puts his knowledge in this book and it shows. The info is at hand, practical and easy to read.
Remember the old question, what book would you take with you to a deserted island?
Well... this is the one.
Good all around book.......2006-11-08
First, this book is not about wildnerness survival. The recipes that include garlic and butter are well, not practical if your lost in the woods. The book is more geared towards going into the wilderness with everything you need at your disposal, and not lacking the essentials. The information is well presented, and does not deal with emergencies but rather going out into the woods and enjoying yourself.
The book is more about developing a spiritual relationship with wildnerness and emergency wildernesss survival is a matter of life and death, and not a romantic experience where you walk out having touched the hand of God. If you live, you will probably find God. I bought this book for the sole purpose of learning about survival in the wilderness. I found alot of very useful information, but, having a pretty solid base already, the book is still a fun read.
The sections on cordage are very well done, and the sections on pottery, skinning are also well done. I think if you want to have a rewarding wilderness experience without the dangers of being lost, this book is awesome. If your looking for what to do in case your lost, this might not cover all the bases.
Still a nice book that I frequently thumb through while sitting in the bathroom.
Roughin it up? Read this one first........2006-07-05
The book is very focused, informative and explained.
It could have a chapter on GPS, but we get it with the GPS so its ok not to have it here. And using a compas is explained.
On the plant food, the chapter could have been clearer.
But the chapter on survival in the wilderness is indispensable.
OUTDOOR SURVIVAL HANDBOOK.......2006-07-04
THIS BOOK IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHILE IT STILL GIVES YOU A LOT OF INFORMATION.
I WOULD RECCOMMEND THIS BOOK TO MY FRIENDS.

Book Description
An ideal tool for students writing research papers for psychology, sociology, business, economics, nursing, social work, and criminal justice courses, this new brief reference manual offers easy access to the APA documentation style, along with research writing basics. Unlike the bulky, expensive Publication Manual of the Psychological Association, 5/e, which is intended for scholarly researchers and can be difficult to access even in libraries, the Pocket Guide to APA Style is a convenient, portable reference that helps students write properly documented papers. In addition to thorough coverage of APA style, the book includes an overview of the research writing process entitled "Writing Scholarly Papers," two sample APA-style papers (including one experimental research paper), and three useful appendixes.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have.......2007-07-09
This Pocket Guide is wonderful, and I'm recommending it to all my graduate students as a "must have" for their library.
From MLA to APA.......2007-05-07
Although I have spent the last four years of my undergrad preparing papers in the MLA style, my final capstone class to complete my degree required APA style papers. Apparently this was to prepare me for grad school. Whatever the reason, it was a big change, but a very manageable change thanks to the Pocket Guide to APA Style.
The book was very conveniently organized and made APA style understandable. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in learning APA style or required to learn APA style. Bottom line, it's a great, handy, little book for research paper writers.
A must have for any post-secondary education student........2007-05-06
The Pocket Guide to Apa Style is a handy reference that I wish I had earlier in my academic career. It nicely augments the full APA Publication Manual and is technically accurate. The Pocket Guide sits next to my laptop and is easier to flip through then the manual. It is able to address most APA Style questions. It is not a substitute for the Manual is truly a "must have" for graduate students.
A Must for Doctoral Students.......2007-04-22
I discovered this terrific little book when I was a Ph.D. student. Now, as a doctoral faculty member at a leading online university, I continue to use it regularly and recommend it highly to my students.
Perrin's guide has saved me countless hours of poring over the writing style manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), which, by the way, is excellent, more comprehensive, and a "must own" if you are a doctoral student, but is more traditional in its organization and presentation of the material.
Perrin's book is very user friendly. It has a spiral binding, which allows you to open it to any page and lay it flat on the table while you work. More importantly, it has a convenient list inside the front cover of the most frequently used types of periodicals, books, audiovisual sources, and electronic sources, along with the pages numbers in the book where you can find the in-text and reference citations for them. This index makes finding the correct APA citations for most common reference situations quite simple.
The information presented in this guide is clear and easy to find. It is a great time saver.

Well worth the money........2007-03-09
One of the most useful textbooks I have purchased for a college class. Many times, I don't even crack the required text, but this little handbook sits right next to me as I tap away for hours on my Master's project.
Customer Reviews:
A pocket style manual.......2007-10-02
its an excently book to have handy. its very helpful for every class thats consists of writting.
Pocket Size Portfolio.......2007-09-04
The pocket size portfolio I received was in great condition and came in a timely manner.
very useful in content and portability........2007-01-11
this book is great because it's compact and has all the info you could ask for involving documentation, grammar, etc.worth the price!
Not for me.......2006-11-11
Ordered this for my sister, not for me. She needed it for a class. It came pretty fast.
Handy little guide.......2006-08-25
Pretty nifty actually if a bit pricey for the size. Spiral bound, nicely presented, small enough to fit in a computer bag or purse. It has a section on clarity (tightening sentences, etc.), grammar, punctuation, and mechanics (capitalizing, abbreviating, etc.). There is also a big section on research paper styles, including MLA, APA, and Chicago. Nice layout, clear type, color coded page edges so you can find your section easier. (I've added some sample pictures I scanned of the pages.)
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the quality of the cover. Since it is spiral bound it is a bit flimsy. It would be nice if it had a heavier cover to give it some resistance to damage.

Customer Reviews:
Nice general guide but little else.......2007-09-27
I purchased this book online while doing a massive repair job on a series of Engineering Manuals that were filled with writing errors and confusing information. This book is more like a handy dandy thesaurus but for real technical writing, it is virtually uselesss. The Microsoft Word Help Index has better examples. I found it to be confusing and actually a bit disorganized with tons of info that most people past English 101 should know, especially Technical Writers or those who describe themselves as being so. I don't recommend it.
The Handbook of Technical Writing, Seventh Edition.......2007-08-03
This is a great book. It is very useful as a reference for technical writing.
Great Book for technical Writing.......2007-06-08
A must for all those aspiring Technical Writers.
The layout is alphabetical, which makes finding items faster.
Clear instructions with plenty of samples.
A good reference, but needs more contemporary examples.......2007-04-20
Part style guide, word usage book, and techniques tutorial, this is a useful daily reference. It is clearly written, with lots of illustrations, cross-references, and examples that made it easy to understand each topic. However, the document types discussed need to be updated. The book focuses too much on correspondence related to job hunting and general business activity, materials that are better covered in other books. It contains too little discussion of the projects produced by technical writers today; especially lacking is discussion of online help and web content.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!.......2007-01-11
This book was boring, filled with too much English 101 inside this book instead of how to break it into the technical writing fields. I could have used a old college English instead

Book Description
School's out in Big River, Iowa, and Tex Donleavy, a kid who keeps his nose in the books and his deformed right hand deep in his pocket, is looking forward to a blissful summer in the company of Linda Volesky, the vivacious beauty who happens to be his father's girlfriend. Instead, Tex gets dumped on his mother's doorstep, where Farley Dickerson, the big oaf she's just married, and his two kids have made themselves at home. Nobody's more surprised than Tex, then, when he discovers he likes his new stepfather, that he actually wants to spend the summer at Mom's, and that he - Tex Donleavy - is going to play ball on Farley's Little League team. And then there's the plucky and brooding Jack, Farley's daughter, who becomes Tex's closest ally, as well as his greatest source of confusion. In all, it's shaping up to be a summer full of surprises - though nothing can prepare Tex for the biggest surprise of all, a secret so terrible that it will change the lives of every member of his family.
Through his careful, lyrical prose, Tim Johnston expertly balances the pain of inching toward maturity with sly humor, making his fiction debut an auspicious occasion.

Never So Green.......2005-09-30
I think this is one of the best books I ever read. I compare it with Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows it is so good. How he struggles with his family and becomes a great baseball player.
An elegant and haunting depiction of adolescence!.......2002-12-19
This is an elegant and haunting depiction of adolescence. I came across this book while browsing... and was stuck by its cover. I expected a lighthearted book about little league baseball. I discovered something much greater. This story and these characters have strayed with me for weeks. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Johnston's work.
Realistic, involving fiction.......2002-12-15
Tex gets something quite different for the summer when instead of spending the time with his father and his new girlfriend, he lands in the lap of his mother and her new family. Tex's friendship with his new stepfather is uncertain, until a common connection in baseball introduces him to a new world and brings new family ties. Just as all seems to be coming together, Tex makes a discovery which will again change his family's life. Realistic, involving fiction.
Not necessarily a boy's book.......2002-11-27
I am a fifth grade teacher and am always on the lookout for new books to challenge students. I picked up this novel and looked at the jacket. It seemed innocent enough for a fifth grader. Upon reading it I felt that the subject matter was far to advanced for my classroom. I believe that the seventh grade might be a better spot for this novel.
The book itself was very engaging. The author uses baseball as a venue for healing. I think that Mr. Johnson has quite a future ahead of him.
