Book Description

In this accessible presentation of the famous Bates method, Thomas R. Quackenbush (who teaches the Bates method in California and Oregon) describes how eyesight can improve naturally, at any age and regardless of heredity. This book is a wonderful tribute to the genius of Dr. Bates, who was a pioneer in discovering how vision becomes blurred and how it restores itself naturally to clarity and acuity. Now 80 years later, his findings and teachings remain light years ahead of our contemporaries. His approach to treating vision problems was truly holistic and the theme throughout this book is very much an extension of that holistic approach. Dr. Quackenbush is to be commended for his dedication in getting the truth out and keeping the torch burning in this "bible" on vision improvement.

4 out of 5 stars Mrs Wallace.......2007-07-03

Good overall information but at times a bit too wordy and repetitive. Resembles a bit more of a textbook rather than a laypersons guide to improving sight.

4 out of 5 stars Good book to learn about improving eyesight!.......2007-07-03

Very good book on how to improve your eyesight naturally. This book tells how to retrain your eyes to be able to focus again and the steps to achieve this. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anybody that wants to get their eyesight back without the huge out of sight cost of lasik or other means of improving eyesight!

5 out of 5 stars Relearning to See.......2007-06-11

An excellent book to learn about the eyes, their functions, and how to use them properly. Eyes were given to us by God, and I wondered why they cannot self heal like many parts of the body. It is such a joy to see that eyes can be self healed when we learn to use them properly. The current methods of vision correction are just a crutch ... maybe good for business, but not our vision. I view this book as a gift from God to me to regain my vision ... what a blessing!

5 out of 5 stars Hey!!! I don't need glasses any more and my ampliopia is gone!.......2007-01-27

I have noticed that I was loosing sight in one eye. The diagnostics from doctors ranged from adult ampliopia, to cararacts, to presbiopia, to astigmatism, etc. Every doctor I went to came with a different cause. I was about to go into surgery or start wearing glasses when I read about Dr Bates.

After doing some resarch on line, I decided for Tom's book. It is sort of on the long chatty side, but it was well worth it.

Now i am not only free from ampliopia (temprary blindness of one eye), but I am now reading most of the time with out glasses. As a matter of fact, I am now with a patch on the good eye and writing this review with the eye that doctors wanted to do the surgery on or give me thick glasses.

This book is not so much about exercises but in understanding how to change habits that create the vision problems in the first place.

After reading this book, I met with other people that also bought it and had similar results.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, my vision improved dramatically.......2007-01-11

I cant believe that after 12 years of wearing glasses i an finally see with my own eyes. This book is a must have for anyone interested in improving their vision naturally without glasses, contacts or surgery!

5 out of 5 stars A revelation for parents.......2007-08-11

This book is a revelation for parents of a "mystery" child, who has many inexplicable difficulties in school (although not necessarily dyslexia), but also has extreme strengths in visual spacial areas, such as building and drawing. When I finally read this book, after years of struggle and searching and pain for my child, there was instant recognition. I looked at my child in a whole new way, realizing that I, and the school, were assuming that certain things were the most important (coincidentally, the things WE were good at), when this entirely untapped area was probably the key to the success of mankind. While focusing on the child's weaknesses, the extreme strengths were going unrecognized and unrewarded. I credit this book with saving my child's happiness, after years and years of criticism. Said child is now an adult engaged in a brand new field which uses those extreme strengths. Thank you, James West, for saving my child. I just wish we had found you (and you had written this book) earlier.

2 out of 5 stars Yes, An Irony.......2007-06-13

I bought this book thinking it will give me great insights on alternative ways of thinking and working but it's just another popular propaganda without any real substance.

The psychology in the book is nothing but folk theories.

5 out of 5 stars Computer Graphics and Gifted Dyslexics.......2006-01-07

"In the Mind's Eye" is the most interesting book I've ever read. Author Thomas G. West shows how advanced computer graphic technology is starting to provide an educational and professional home for the dyslexic visual thinker. In delightful and precise language, he illustrates why this new world of processing requires a global perspective, or the ability to see the whole of a phenomenon, as opposed to the blinkered view of an isolated part, and thereby to recognize patterns and quickly identify irregularities and problems. A three-dimensional view of each trader's performance could have saved Baron's Bank from the rogue trader who destroyed it.

The brain design that enables the visual thinker to grasp vast amounts of data by seeing it from a global perspective often comes with dyslexia or other learning difficulties. For these people, the traditional classroom and bureaucratic organization are nightmares. Schools, universities, and corporations flush out many dyslexic visual thinkers at great cost to the progress of civilization.

Nowadays computers eliminate what in earlier systems caused problems. They handle spelling and calculations easily. Another kind of student and professional is needed, an individual who is talented at manipulating images, rather than those facile with arithmetic and able to recite on demand memorized passages assigned by a teacher.

This extended essay would interest the general reader as much as it would the visual thinker. West exposes you to a careful look at gifted, dyslexic visual thinkers who made extraordinary contributions to civilization. You will read about how these giants refused to buy into the dominant clerically oriented educational and professional systems and forged ahead to devise original ways to build on their strengths.

I was particularly interested that for these profiled individuals, what they had on hand was enough for their pursuits - the expertise and material available to them through their studies, work, or personal interests. They were able to shrug off professional, family, or societal expectations, giving themselves plenty of time to think quietly. Their passions lay in engagement rather than whether their inventions or discoveries would work or would sell. Their ideas and activities will trigger pyrotechnics of thought and, possibly, a myriad of ideas for projects to pursue in your free time.

3 out of 5 stars Innovative.......2004-05-25

This author challenges the status quo about learning and creativity. His ideas challenge you think and re-visit your preconceptions.

On the other hand, his writing style is difficult and repetitive. Although interested I found it difficult to finish this book.

5 out of 5 stars if your child is a puzzle whiz, buy this book now.......2003-12-07

I read this book slowly. Word by word. Not because I am dyslexic, but because I didn't want to miss anything that the author had to say. This book let me understand that my family isn't alone in struggling with the paradox of not hearing but seeing too well. A must have book and I am a confirmed library user.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-07-03

I ordered three face reading books to try to get as much information as I could. This book by far was the best. She adds a bunch of humor. This book is very well written and easy to read. I recommend this to all who are curious about what the face means. I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and Insightful.......2005-12-10

After reading The Power of Face Reading, I am shocked by the response from "Almost Useless". In her book Rosetree asserts that we all have various challenges as well as styles with which we excell at, and I think Rosetree does an excellent job of expressing our different styles for work, spending money, communication, etc. with great compassion and depth. This is not a "too positive spin on every negative interpretation"; it's more a realistic way of looking at our strenghts and weaknesses.

I also firmly disagree with "Almost Useless"'s assertion that some of the interpretations are "just inaccurate." I have done many readings after reading the book, for friends and people that I've just met, and everyone remarks how surprisingly accurate they are! Rosetree also points out that the traits of our face reveal our propensity for a certain style of being. We are all human and can choose to behave in other ways as we choose. Knowing what are preferences are can help us use them with more strength, and to also gain understanding for the strengths and propensities of others. Brilliant for relationships!

In terms of "putting it all together" for doing face readings, I found this to be no problem. Like I said, I started doing readings for friends and new people I met right away. Rosetree also explicity states to set an intention to be of service, and begin with the features that strike you the most, and then notice what you notice next and go from there. This is what I've adhered to and what has made my readings so successful.

Lastly, I would be cautious with the review titled "Gems for Tabliod and Intellectuals." I might chuckle at these having not read the book. Rosetree's book provides much more depth than these quotes reveal. The book shows us that there are many ways to be in the world, and the beauty is that we can choose. I find it powerfully useful to know my style preferences at my very core.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best!.......2005-12-03

I know this book. I know this author. Rose Rosetree is a woman of the highest integrity and she is a great force. She's been on this path for many years, researching ancient studies and particularly refining the hidden traits found in faces. Each one of her books is a gift. But the wisdom contained in this one, The Power of Face Reading, showers the reader with clues and tips on discovering the very essence of, say, co-workers, first dates, celebrities, politicians -- any person with whom you might come face to face. For those with a sense of wonder and a hunger to know more, this is an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing insights.......2005-12-02

I found this book, like all the ones I've read by Rose Rosetree, to be witty, insightful, and very useful. When reading this book, keep in mind that reading faces isn't just a formula, which is a point that Ms. Rosetree makes. The whole face needs to be considered, since it is a reflection of the soul as a whole. I use face reading often, and it's amazing how accurate it is. In addition to the companion book WRINKLES ARE GOD'S MAKEUP, I strongly suggest reading AURA READING THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES. Combining aura reading with face reading is a very powerful tool and provides a far more complete picture.

3 out of 5 stars Almost useless.......2005-05-02

The author tries so hard not to offend anybody, that she puts too positive spin on every possibly negative interpretation and overemphasizes what would already be considered as a positive one. Also, I found the most interpretations just inaccurate. Examples from nose chapter:
short nose - workaholic
long nose - talent for planning and strategy
straight nose - you work systematically
arched nose - creativity
...
Ok, of course you are supposed to interpret everything and put it all together, eliminating contradictions on the way, but the book falls short on instructions how to do that. There should be a chapter titled "putting it together" where the author should explain the process of face reading: what to look first? how to determine basic information about a person and go from there? Instead the book focuses on details without giving you the big picture.

Book Description

The Eye's Mind significantly alters our understanding of modernist literature by showing how changing visual discourses, techniques, and technologies affected the novels of that period. In readings that bring philosophies of vision into dialogue with photography and film as well as the methods of observation used by the social sciences, Karen Jacobs identifies distinctly modernist kinds of observers and visual relationships.

This important reconception of modernism draws upon American, British, and French literary and extra-literary materials from the period 1900-1955. These texts share a sense of crisis about vision's capacity for violence and its inability to deliver reliable knowledge. Jacobs looks closely at the ways in which historical understandings of race and gender inflected visual relations in the modernist novel. She shows how modernist writers, increasingly aware of the body behind the neutral lens of the observer, used diverse strategies to displace embodiment onto those "others" historically perceived as cultural bodies in order to reimagine for themselves or their characters a "purified" gaze.

The Eye's Mind addresses works by such high modernists as Vladimir Nabokov, Virginia Woolf, and (more distantly) Ralph Ellison and Maurice Blanchot, as well as those by Henry James, Zora Neale Hurston, and Nathanael West which have been tentatively placed in the modernist canon although they forgo the full-blown experimental techniques often seen as synonymous with literary modernism. Jacobs reframes fundamental debates about modernist aesthetic practices by demonstrating how much those practices are indebted to the changing visual cultures of the twentieth century.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating.......2001-05-12

I strongly recommend this critical study of the impact of visual culture on literary modernism. As the author notes in her introduction, while other books have appeared in recent years about "the primacy of the visual in modernism," these books have focused on the relationship between literature and the visual arts. What makes The Eye's Mind unique, and important, is its analysis of the new breed of "observer" who arises with the development of photographic and film technologies and the emergent discourses of science and consumerism. Jacob's study focuses on the novel, an art form which perhaps more than any other is devoted to the development and elaboration of subjectivity. However, as she goes on to demonstrate via the modernist examples of the novel she has chosen, subjectivity in the twentieth century is challenged, undermined and even elided by radical changes in how human beings see and know "reality." Further, not only does Jacobs provide compelling illustrations of the twentieth century observer through her analyses of modernist works by writers such as Henry James, the early Vladimir Nabokov, Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison, she also does a beautiful job of linking the new modes of seeing, via readings of Virginia Woolf, Nathaniel West, and the later Nabokov (Lolita) in the last section of her book, to postmodern consumer culture and the society of the spectacle.

Jacobs examines some difficult works, both literary and philosophical, in The Eye's Mind. Her own prose, however, remains lucid and illuminating. This book is essential reading not only for those interested in modernist literature and culture, but also for anyone seeking a better understanding of our contemporary image-driven society.

5 out of 5 stars Twenty/twenty Vision!.......2001-05-07

To say that Jacobs breaks new ground in an interdisciplinary study of Modernism would be more than an understatement. Jacobs has read widely and deeply across disciplines to produce an extraordinary account of the intersection of visual technologies and literary production. In addition to her adroit use of theory, Jacobs shows a fluid access to a range of literary texts. Her reading of Zora Neale Hurston, for example, draws on anthropological history to demonstrate the way ethnography helped to establish what we "see" as the Other. She applies this insight to Hurston, who trained with anthropologist Franz Boas in the participant-observer method, a method, Jacobs argues, that produced literary results for Hurston that were both productive and limiting. The Eye's Mind is a must-read for students of twentieth century visual and literary studies.

Book Description

Young people with bipolar disorder and adults who grew up with the condition speak out to share how they experienced the symptoms of this illness during their youth, and how it affected their functioning in school, at home and with friends. Their insightful comments, woven together by the author, form a stunning picture of the young person's internal experience. The reader will come away with a new understanding of these young people and a renewed commitment to make a difference by reaching out to help.

"Tracy Anglada has broken new ground with Intense Minds. While most books speak about the children and their feelings, hers is the first to capture the children articulating what they truly feel themselves: their impossible levels of frustration and irritability, their episodes of emptiness or manic energy, their severe difficulties in the academic environment, and their dread of night time due to their propensity to suffer horrific images and scenarios while sleeping.

"One comes away with such admiration for these children and adolescents for soldiering on despite these terrible burdens, and for the author who took the time to listen and put their words to paper. Parents, clinicians and educators must read this first-of-its-kind book."

5 out of 5 stars a must-read for parents, health care professionals, and teachers.......2007-09-10

As a parent of a child with bipolar disorder, and a health care professional, I strongly urge everyone who interacts with these children to read this book. It is the only one I know of that explains the disease through the eyes, ears and feelings of the child or adolescent. It gave me insights I never could have obtained through medical literature, or even from my own child.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2007-05-13

This books has the makings of a great read -- comments by people going through this disorder -- a look through their eyes. However, it really is just boring and not that insightful. Much more compelling is being on a listserv or group on the internet and sharing other families stories. Some of their posts have been what I thought this book would be. Check it out of the library -- but really barely worth your time to read. Buy The Bipolar Child by Papolos -- much better!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read.......2007-02-28

Parents of bipolar kids are among my favorite people. Despite the terrible illness that brings us together, I always manage to part company on a feel-good note. Maybe it's their love and dedication and intelligence and optimism in the face of circumstances that would leave anyone else embittered and demoralized. Maybe it's their sixth sense for projecting the kind of empathy that can't be faked.

One of these individuals is Tracy Anglada, whom I met last summer at a conference in Stockton, CA that featured Dr Papolos and Janice Papolos. I was there in a dual role as a reporter for this Newsletter and to work up a pre-publication buzz for my soon-to-be-released book. The organizers of the conference kindly allowed me a table to exhibit my wares. One of my fellow exhibitors was Tracy, and we found lots of time to talk.

Tracy is a Florida mom who started up her own organization, BPChildren, dedicated to helping young people and adults understand more about pediatric bipolar. She is the author of "Intense Minds: Through the Eyes of Young People with Bipolar Disorder."

One quick look at the opening paragraphs, and you will drop everything you're doing:

"A broad smile spread across my son's face. His eyes shone brightly and he turned to me to share his good news. What was the cause of excitement for my 6-year-old son? We were at a meeting, and the speaker was describing the horrible plight of the Biblical man Job.

"'Job was so sick, he wanted to die,' said the speaker.

"What was my son's good news in response to that statement? Two simple words: "Like me!" He had finally found someone he could relate to, someone else who wanted to die. It was comforting for him to know he was not alone. It was no comfort to me. As a parent, those were the worst words I could have heard."

This is a book where the kids (or adults recalling their tormented childhoods) get to tell their stories. It's designed for kids to read, but any clinician or educator or other interested party who does not buy a copy is guilty of malpractice. Listen:

"I was told how retarded, demonized and horrible a child I was. So I never felt I was wonderful or good." (Dawn)

"I was trying to survive in an environment that was not the same to me as it was to other people." (Tasha)

"It feels like a ping pong ball going from one side to the other in my head - one bounce telling me to stay quiet, the other bounce telling me to scream." (Tim)

"My dreams were scary. I was zipped in a bag of water in my closet drowning, while bad guys were trying to kill my daddy." (Steven)
In case you still think we're forcing meds on kids:

"I would have been better off being treated if I had been diagnosed properly. I was miserable as a child. Horribly miserable." (Lee)

And, last but not least, the good we can take away from all this:

"I use this illness to my advantage. Be strong and remember where you have been and what you have been through. If I beat those days, I can beat anything now that I know the illness, the symptoms and the feelings of it." (Linda)

4 out of 5 stars A Helpful Perspective on Early-Onset Bipolar Disorder.......2007-01-12

I found this book to be valuable in that it helped me get a better perspective on what it feels like to the child/youth experiencing shifts in mood states over time. I had not seen another book like it, and was very interested in what kids themselves had to say about bi-polar disorder. Even as a parent of an EOBP child, after reading through this book I realized I had not fully considered how he processed his disorder internally - both prior to as well as post dx. The narratives represented here are in the kids own words, with brief summaries and segues between topics provided by the author. There is very little disorder overview or treatment commentary. The experiences cover a wide spectrum of experiences in this often misunderstood, misdiagnosed disorder. There is no uniform experience of bipolar disorder, despite overlapping symptomologies.

It is difficult enough to get an accurate diagnosis for a child/youth with bipolar disorder. Gaining greater insight into what the child thinks about their own cycling (because they are not likely telling you) is incredibly valuable. After reading this book I had a much better idea of what kids go through as well as what works/what doesn't as far as day-to-day management, and why. It definitely boosted my compassion quotient. I recommend this book to anyone who works with or parents a bi-polar child.

5 out of 5 stars A very important book.......2006-07-19

I really, really love this book. As I was reading, I thought of many people I would like to share it with. Even after living with this disease for 5 years, I still found much to learn. I saw my kids, and I caught a glimmer of what they must be experiencing, but cannot express in words. Thank you so much for writing it. .....Mother of two children with bipolar disorder

Book Description

The first compilation of writings by a master of photography.

One of the leading lights in photography of the twentieth century, Henri Cartier-Bresson is also a shrewd observer and critic. His writings on photography and photographers, which have appeared sporadically over the past forty-five years, are gathered here for the first time. Several have never before appeared in English.

The Mind's Eye features Cartier-Bresson's famous text on "the decisive moment" as well as his observations on Moscow, Cuba, and China during turbulent times, which ring with the same immediacy and visual intensity that he brings to his photography.

Cartier-Bresson remains as direct and insightful as ever in his writings. His commentary on photographer friends he has known-including Robert Capa, André Kertész, Ernst Haas, and Sarah Moon-reveal the impassioned and compassionate vision for which Cartier-Bresson is beloved.

Most photographers would find this a nice book to add to their collection.

4 out of 5 stars It's HCB!.......2006-03-24

Very interesting read. I would say a must have for fans of photojournalism and photography in general.
Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected..........2005-09-18

I was somewhat disappointed with this book. I expected a lot more from Cartier Bresson. I found a few paragraphs of some interest, but no more than that. It is also a very small book, can be read in a day.

4 out of 5 stars A small book with a lot of insight.......2003-12-19

I got HCB's book from the library this week and couldn't stop reading it since I started.
Mind you this book has its pluses and minuses:
Pluses:
It is gives good insight in HCB's style of thinking and in general photography in his own words. He talks about his little experiences in China, Cuba, Russia and also about his friends.
Minuses:
The book is very brief and u yearn for more of his stories and experience. It has very less photographs, so if you are looking for that you might get disappointed.

With all that said, I would definitely recommend all of u Photography fans to read it at least once if your local library carries it.

3 out of 5 stars It is not what I expected.......2001-03-30

I bought this book thinking that I was going to receive more insight of Cartier-Bresson style. There is something but I expected more about the thinking of this master of Photography.

2 out of 5 stars I like this less than others do.......2006-01-21

Given all the glowing reviews prior to mine, I feel compelled to offer an alternative viewpoint.

I find Mary Summer Rain's writing style very annoying and thus difficult to read. I find her relationship with No-Eyes irritating and extremely distracting from the message of the book.

Of course, perhaps I am overlooking the whole point. Maybe it is her interaction with her teacher that is the point of the book and teachings about end-times are just incidental.

I am at only at page 100 and have had a hard time reading more than a few pages at a time (and I haven't yet discovered anything about the future other than it is going to be bad). Now that I read in a review below that there is a list at the end of the book, I plan to skip straight to that and spare myself the misery of reading everything to that point.

Obviously others have liked it very much, but it is definitely not something I will read over and over (in fact, I won't finish it). Nor will I recommend it to others.

I suggest you find a copy of one of Ms. Summer Rain's books at the library. Check it out. If her style of writing fascinates rather than disturbs you, then by all means read this and her other books. If, like me, you cannot stand her style, then you have saved yourself the cost of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Emotions.......2005-11-25

I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this, the second book in the "No-Eyes'" series. I had been blown away by the first book "Spirit Song", and wondered if the same would be true of this one.

First, I must say that Mary's writing style really appeals to me - she has the ability to draw the reader into her experiences, with descriptions that allow you to vicariously hear/see/smell/touch whatever she is talking about at the time - it's an amazing journey, to say the least!

In "Phoenix Rising", Mary brings to light her lessons re: No-Eyes' vision concerning our future - the future of the earth, and everyone who resides here. This future appears quite grim, at least at first, until the "cleansing" is complete, and a new way of living - a decidedly more positive way of living - comes into being.

Many horrible events are prophesied - ones that would make anyone shudder - and it's these events that are to be used as a warning that additional horrors are on the way. Many specific examples re: these events are given, and I couldn't help but notice that some things on this list have either already occurred, or are occurring as I write this - although only a few...

My first reaction as I began reading this book was fear. But as I continued, my belief that we can still turn things around came to my mind. I do realize that there is currently much negativity in our world, but I do see things changing (albeit slowly) - I see more & more people interested in changing their thoughts from negative ones to more positive ones.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of the "end of the world" - or at least the end of the world as we know it. I've tended to be put-off by doomsday prophesies - as there have been so many that never came to pass, and many people who have taken extreme actions in an effort to protect themselves from things that just don't wind up happening.

Having said that, I don't believe that this book is a fabrication - I tend to think that it does reflect what No Eyes
saw. But maybe this is just one possible future - dependent on too many variables for us to number...

I gave this book 4 starts instead of 5 mainly because of what was said in the last chapter - as I found this part quite judgmental. In it Mary states that no one should put a price on helping others - she uses the fact that people charge for seminars and the like that are really meant to help people grow spiritually. While I agree that there are some outrageous price tags out there for this "enlightenment", there are many people who still charge "affordable rates". The fact is that many people who offer this guidance do so for a living - they need to be compensated so that they can live - and to say that they are wrong for doing so just doesn't sit well with me; espeically since I'm sure this author is making money from the selling of these books - and there's nothing wrong with that, she needs to have money to survive - but as such, it's quite judgmental to say that no one else should earn their living by helping others...

I agree that no one should be turned away who needs comfort and guidance, and that's why many of us in the "helping professions" use such means as bartering, or sliding scales to ensure that all who are in need are helped. But to say that they should not be compensated for what they do puts a sour taste in my mouth.

Overall, this book has much to offer by way of making the reader think about their lives & how they are choosing to live it, the state of affairs on our planet, what may occur to our earth (and us), as well as what role we are allowing our government to play in our lives. As such, I would highly recommend it to those who are interested in books re: spirituality & our planet earth.

4 out of 5 stars A Look At Things To Come.......2005-09-29

It is scary to imagine how this book ties into the events happening in our world today. This book will make you stop and think about the way our world is changing and the predictions of coming events.

5 out of 5 stars well, that was different.......2005-09-15

i just finished reading "phoenix rising" and all i can say is alrighty then. definitely not what i expected from a mary summer rain book, but most assuredly an interesting read. it truly was an eyeopener as to what some of the recent world events mean and how to "survive" them. if you like mary summer rain or are interested in finding/following your true path in life - then read this book; you'll find out how.

5 out of 5 stars Be Prepared To Be Shocked... and Inspired!.......2003-02-25

... WOW! ... If, after having read this book, you do NOT seriously reconsider WHERE you are living in relation to the surrounding circumstances of your immediate environment, if you do NOT reconsider the WAY you have been relating to that environment as well as to your fellow human beings and all of the other creatures who share that environment with you, and if you do NOT reconsider your goals and means to those goals as far as whether they are in HARMONY with both Nature as well as Spiritual Laws, then - if what this book prophesizes is true - you may be in BIG TROUBLE in the coming years ahead. ... This is no joke!

... This book picks up where SPIRIT SONG left off. It fills in more detail into the teleological understanding of End-Times prophecies from the Native American perspective of No-Eyes - the wise, old, blind teacher of Mary Summer Rain. If you liked SPIRIT SONG, you are going to LOVE this second book in the series, Phoenix Rising. It leaves no stone uncovered.

... Mary Summer Rain writes, on page 48: "As we listened to the nonstop chatter of the scampering squirrels, each of us was lost in our private musings. I wondered at the great number of unaware people I saw around me every day. Didn't they realize that there were great things in the offing? I saw no physical evidence of preparation, physical or spiritual. Oh, I knew of separate groups of mountain folks who believed and were taking every opportunity to physically prepare for the bleak future, but, on the whole, everyone appeared to be obsessed with worry over the most trivial matters. I found this incredibly difficult to accept. The general unawareness of the masses made them look like mindless robots living out their individual lives with blinders on. I thought about the times when I'd overheard people idly comment on the strange occurrences of this or that, yet nobody was ever aware enough to connect the strange occurrences together. Nobody bothered to fit the puzzle pieces of the signs together. Nobody was aware enough to see the entire picture for what it represented."

... Funny, how blind prophets - Native American or otherwise - seem to have more insightful vision than people with normal sight do! We can thank No-Eyes for sharing her visions and wisdom with Mary Summer Rain, and we can thank Mary Summer Rain for sharing them all with us. She has presented us with all of the connected pieces of the entire picture of the prophetic puzzle! Whether your eschatological beliefs are pre-Millennial or post-Millennial, embrace the faith in a Rapture, or even simply cling to the stand that you will one day die, be judged, and hopefully go to a place called Heaven, it doesn't matter - ALL of these prophecies may take place and come true BEFORE any of those final, Biblical, tribulation time events of the Apocalypse ever take place. If this is, indeed, the truth, then Mary Summer Rain has done us all a great service - and we are very grateful to her, and thank her with all our hearts. ... YOWZA! - The Aeolian Kid

5 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor.......2007-01-12

Do yourself a favor and own at least one copy of this book. David Hawkins not only writes clearly on the single most fascinating and important topic, he also poses and answers the spiritual questions you've always thought of (and others you've not yet though of). I've also read "I" and "Power vs. Force" by Hawkins and strongly recommend both. THIS IS NOT A VERBOSE INTELLECTUALIZATION WORK. His work provides a clear explanation of the most complex spiritual teachings and insights.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Insight.......2007-01-05

One of, if not the, most valuable reads encountered relative to enhancing personal spirituality. It puts full responsbility on the individual reader to walk his/her own talk if truly committed to the path of personal enlightenment, now an attainable level of human awareness. With specific suggestions and insightful explanatons, the reader is provided the tools to grapple with his own ego issues, leading naturally into increased balance and harmony with all life. Be prepared to look into the mirror of reality which you have personally created, like it or not. I felt like I had been put through an intensive monastery experience - loved it!

5 out of 5 stars A truly remarkable book.......2006-10-12

After reading "Power vs. Force," I immediately started reading Hawkins's "The Eye of the I." It was just as amazing as the former book, and really took me deep into numerous areas of intellectuall, philosophical, and spiritual study. The study of the nature of consciousness is indeed intriguing, and by reading this book you will be exposed to many profound ideas and new ways to think about consciousness. A MUST READ.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2006-09-10

This book, while helpful, is not as powerful a work as the first book (Power vs Force). I also take issue with his calibrations. Following the method he outlines in several of his books I conducted calibrations and got results: Dr. Howkins calibrates at 422 (Mother Theresa at 424); Power vs Force at 570; The Eye of I at 350 and I, Reality and Subjectivity at 364. On virtually any calibration he gave that I have tried to confirm, I got a different result. I believe this guy has done a lot of good work, but I also think he is subject to the ego like the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars Ordinary Mind.......2006-07-17

It really seems, to me, that this book is different from so many dogmatic books. Many books are products of the ambitions of the frontal lobe(which is programmed to prove its importance, to itself, through the act of thinking).

Hawkins is aware of all the ego trappings of the frontal lobe. All the usefullness of this book comes from Hawkin's ability to see the simple truths (such as the different fields of attraction throughout the scale of consciousness)and his agility in communicating in a simple and clear way, devoid of his own postionality.

I would like to summerize my opinion about the book, but I don't think I can. I hope more people get started by reading this book.

Book Description

Emotional Healing at Warp Speed provides a popular introduction to a miraculous new psychotherapeutic method called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). In these pages psychotherapist David Grand, Ph.D., describes his own first encounter with EMDR, then recounts the dramatic results of bringing this new therapy into the lives of his patients. By alternately stimulating the left and right sides of the brain to clear psychological blocks and resolve trauma, EMDR helped Grand’s patients put the pieces of their emotionally shattered lives back together with a speed that exceeded his wildest dreams.

Grand’s use of EMDR has helped people from all walks of life, from railroad engineers reliving the nightmare of death on the tracks to mothers of children killed on the mean streets of America’s inner cities, from bomb victims in Belfast and Oklahoma City to Arabs and Israelis traumatized by decades of hatred and violence. His account of this work inspires and touches the reader’s heart as it reveals the healing power of a process that works as swiftly as thought itself.

Grand takes EMDR–developed by Francine Shapiro, M.D., only fourteen years ago–far beyond its initial use in healing trauma. In addition to turbo- charging breakthroughs in psychotherapy, Grand uses EMDR to clear away blocks to performance and creativity. Remarkable examples show athletes, actors, musicians, and artists improving their performance, and a self-use chapter describes practical ways readers can apply this remarkable method to resolve fear of public speaking, enhance creativity, enjoy deeper, more restful sleep, resolve stress and anxiety, and much more.

4 out of 5 stars Readable introduction to the power of EMDR.......2007-09-16

David Grand presents an approachable description of a powerful psychological technique that deserves much more interest in the community.

5 out of 5 stars Experienced this method.......2006-03-26

I have not read this book, HOWEVER I have experienced this method and it worked for me in 20 minutes FIRST TIME. I had been haunted with a very painful childhood memory well into adulthood, and within those 20 minutes, it became no longer painful, but an easy recall with NO PAIN attached!!! I am NOT one to go easily into hypnotism, though this isnt THAT... but only my idea it could be.. but this was so QUICK, I was totally amazed and highly recommend it when done with a compassionate professional. I wish more Professionals would learn and use it is all I can say!!
I am in NO WAY saying MY experience would be as fast or same for others.. depending on the problems... of course it will vary greatly... but in the end.. I recommend the method still.

3 out of 5 stars OK, if you buy into the theory of EMDR.......2004-09-15

I had about 10 EMDR sessions from a trained, licensed psychologist, and found them very helpful. And this book does provide some interesting anecdotes of the author's experience first being trained to administer EMDR and then as a practitioner. But I think he is a bit over his head when it comes to really proving anything that it is the specifics of EMDR that are doing the healing. In a repartee with a skeptical therapist who claimed the eye movement part of EMDR may be extraneous, the author claimed he needn't do research studies to see whether EMDR worked by giving the analogy that if you see a man shooting another man, and the other man falls down dead, that is sufficient evidence the man died of the gunshot. Problem here is that there are lots more variables in EMDR. And one of them is whether it works just as well with or without the eye movement business since there is much else going on: visualization, empathic listening, re-experiencing, cognitive restructuring and the like. Thus, the gun analogy is downright idiotic. So, right off, I'm a bit suspicious about Grand's understanding, not merely of research, but of the basics of phenomenology. The other thing that bothers me is his application of EMDR to other uses such as acting training. Using the method in a modified way, he worked with an acting teacher: the results? The actors found it incredibly helpful. Well, first off, I don't think actors or acting teachers are the most reliable people to know what works and doesn't and why. It is also rather insulting to the acting traditions developed by such teachers as Strassberg and Sandy Miesner who spent their lives working in refining acting instruction, and who both were actors themselves. I think Grand is a bit full of himself.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend!.......2004-04-12

Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR. I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read. Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments. Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

5 out of 5 stars As a former patient of Dr. Grand..........2002-06-03

I was pleased to see that he had written a book that explains EMDR and the problems of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients. This is a great public service because so many people suffer trauma and could be treated effectively if only those around them had a better understanding and were better able to offer support. Read this book, if you haven't already, for the sake of those around you who suffer from PTSD. Everyone knows someone who has suffered this kind of trauma.

As much as I enjoyed the well-written descriptions of the treatments, the individual cases, and Dr. Grand's personal experiences, I found the chapters that dealt with the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program most valuable. Trauma in conflict-ridden areas left untreated, can cause more trauma, be handed down from generation to genertaion, and destroy the lives of multitudes. HAP brings training to war-torn areas and those affected by disasters. There cannot be peace in any part of the world if there is no peace in the minds of individuals.

I highly recommend this book. It is an easy read and certainly worth more than the time it takes to read it.
