Book Description
Ion channels are biological nanotubes that are formed by membrane proteins. Because ion channels regulate all electrical activities in living cells, understanding their mechanisms at a molecular level is a fundamental problem in biology. This book deals with recent breakthroughs in ion-channel research that have been brought about by the combined effort of experimental biophysicists and computational physicists, who together are beginning to unravel the story of these exquisitely designed biomolecules. With chapters by leading experts, the book is aimed at researchers in nanodevices and biosensors, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students in biology and the physical sciences.

Introduction to Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy
ASIN: 1402043023 |
Book Description
When considering the biological significance and industrial and medical applications of biopolymers, it is crucial to know details of their secondary structure, dynamics and assembly. The biopolymers include globular, membrane and fibrous proteins, polypeptides, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and lipids. Solid state NMR spectroscopy has proved to be the most suitable and unrivaled means for investigations of biopolymers. The major advantage of solid state NMR spectroscopy is that the resulting line widths can be manipulated experimentally and are not influenced by motional fluctuation of proteins under consideration as a whole.
Solid State NMR Spectroscopy for Biopolymers: Principles and Applications provides a comprehensive account on how the conformation and dynamics of such biopolymers can be revealed by solid state NMR spectroscopy. Special efforts have been made towards the historical and chronological consequences of a variety of applications and the dynamic aspects of the biopolymer system. In particular, the authors emphasise how important it is to record the most simple DD-MAS (one pulse excitation with high power decoupling) as a mean of locating very flexible portions of membrane proteins and membrane associated peptides. The authors also demonstrate that dynamic features of membrane proteins with a timescale of fast (10
8 Hz) and intermediate (10
4 -10
5 Hz) fluctuation motions can be revealed easily by specific suppression of peaks.

Book Description
The intent in initiating this volume was to bring together a series of essays which would define our present understanding of the endosome and lysosome and their interrelationship. The editors deliberately encouraged the contributors to be speculative; to strive to put order to the "real" world of incomplete and sometimes conflicting data. Seeing science from the laboratory bench can often be like viewing an impressionistic painting from up close; a series of paint dabs with no apparent order. The contributors to this volume were asked to step back and leave the reader with a sense of the whole as well as the detail. To the extent that this has happened, the credit should go to the individual authors.
Our understanding of endosomes and lysosomes has undergone a molecular revolution over the last decade. Hence, we now know much about the molecular features required for internalization of an endocytic receptor, or the function of mannose 6-phosphate receptors in the transport of lysosomal enzymes. We can trace and follow the flow of molecules. In this volume current molecular knowledge concerning the function and relationship of endosomes and lysosomes is presented. Because of this vast increase in knowledge of molecules, we have realized that endosomes in particular are very ephemeral organelles. In fact, endosomes may well not be discrete entities but rather continuously changing and evolving in their molecular composition. The dynamic nature of the relationship between endosomes and lysosomes is the unifying focus of the genetic, biochemical, microscopic, and molecular biological approaches described in the chapters which follow.
Book Description
Kendo-the Way of the Sword-is one of the oldest of Japan's martial arts and the one most closely associated with the samurai. Immortalized in the action movies of Akira Kurosawa and in the bestselling novel Musashi, Kendo--originally a form of swordsmanship-has in recent years developed into a
popular and highly competitive sport enjoyed by thousands of men and women around the world.
Kendo: The Definitive Guide is the first book in English to provide a practical and truly comprehensive approach to the subject. Everything that the novice needs to know, from basic information about purchasing, wearing, and maintaining essential equipment to competing in international tournaments,
is explained in simple, straightforward language. Step-by-step explanations of fundamental techniques to be mastered to attain black belt level are illustrated in easy-to-follow line drawings.
With appendices giving the rules at international competitions and important information about Kendo clubs outside Japan, Kendo is the definitive guide for all non-Japanese Kendoists. A special section about the history and development of this martial art and guidelines for running practice sessions
also make it a unique resource for all teachers of Kendo.
The definitive guide includes
- basic Kendo principles and techniques
- official International Kendo Federation regulations
- list of Kendo clubs and national associations around the world
Customer Reviews:
A well-rounded Introduction.......2007-05-16
Anticipating the start of Kendo classes, I ordered this book to get an overview of what to expect, what to do, and how to do them. The book is well translated by Angela Turzynski, and makes for a quick, easy read. Segmenting the chapters into snippets is perfect for one studying, and not looking to get an overly drawn-out explanation of procedure and custom.
Not looking to memorize the entire book, I went through the book rather quickly to pick up the basics and have a small understanding for the first lesson. Upon entering the class, after the first practice the sensei asked me if I had studied Kendo before, which I had not. I attribute this compliment to "Kendo-The definitive guide". When I learn something new, I can also come back to the book and review in more detail what the move entails without having to drag the class down with questions.
In the appendix you can even study scoring, refereeing, terminology, and get a list of Kendo associations near you.
Kendo.......2007-02-21
The book has good illustrations to show you the different strikes and the katas for Kendo. This is a good suppliment for any new student to help review what they learned in the dojo. It is also good for experts to have the names of the techniques and the rules for the tournaments. The book is a complete guide. The Heart of Kendo and Kendo: Elements, Rules and Philosophy is good if you want to know the history of Kendo.
Not exactly "definitive".......2007-01-02
but still a very good guide yes... i have very much intrest in kendo but don't have the chance to do it here... no clubs near or far... i do iaido that is... and i can imagine how it must be...
but then again, i can not really tell if it's a good book for people with years of experience...
A must have.......2006-11-10
This guide is a must have for any kendoka, with correct and up-to-date information on the IJKF rules, techniques and theory. I highly recomend it.
A good introduction to Kendo.......2006-11-01
Hiroshi Ozawa's "Kendo the Definitive Guide" is a good introduction to the sport of Kendo. Ozawa covers all the technical details of the sport while also explaining the proper attitude and etiquette that a practitioner should develop.
After a brief history of Japanese swordsmanship and its transition into Kendo he gives a detailed step-by-step instruction on dressing in the traditional Kendo uniform, as well as its proper maintenance. He includes the Japanese names for equipment and the parts of the practice sword, as well as providing a guide to determine the proper size sword for the user.
The basic and more advanced techniques of the sport are explained in clear detail with numerous illustrations, as well as how a person should conduct themselves while at the dojo. One theme Ozawa stresses is the importance of keeping a single focus on the task at hand. He uses the Japanese proverb "if you run after two hares, you will catch neither" to make this point.
The appendix includes the official regulations from the Japan Kendo Federation, detailing everything one would need to know to actually participate in or knowledgably watch a Kendo competition
All in all it's a good book on Kendo covering basic and more advanced training techniques, proper attitude and etiquette and the tournament rules and regulations of the sport.

Customer Reviews:
Very good, recommend it or the Nat Geo guide.......2007-08-25
I read this from cover to cover but used a competitors guide while in Greece instead because I thought it might be better based on my past experiences using both brands. Also, LP guides tend to be a bit more roughing it in recommendations (I am too old for that) but, that was not an issue.
I kind of wish I had brought this one or the National Geographic Greece guide which would have been fine and a bit thiner.
EXCELLENT RESOURCE.......2007-08-24
My husband and I have been to Greece 3 times using our 4th edition LP Greece. The maps are excellent; we've gotten exactly where we need to go. We read about the different islands, appear at the port w/our luggage, and take whatever boat is going next to a particular group, i.e. Cyclades, and read about the various other stops on the way. The book is not designed to be a travel agent by doing all the work for you. It is a guidebook, and some specific info should be found elsewhere (such as the internet) in trip planning. We use the internet sites listed in LP, esp. the hotel sites, so we have an idea of the author's grading scale. We found plenty of great suggestions regarding places to stay and eat, and if other reviewers felt that info was lacking, the LP would have to be 6 inches thick! While some towns have a 100 places to stay, it is not necessary to list every place in LP. We use the LP reviews as a guideline; we compare the author's opinion by what we actually found. After all, one person's dungeon is another's castle (& vice versa). The hints, tips,& warnings (esp. about taxis!) were a great help. We're buying the newest editon for our 4th trip as our poor old book is so worn and unreadable.
Very thorough guidebook all in one volume.......2007-06-09
This seems to be a very thorough and complete guidebook to all of Greece and the Greek Islands, all in one volume. Kudos to Lonely Planet for not dividing the country into two volumes, requiring you to buy two books at twice the price, and then lug two books around to cover your trip. The only downside is the lack of photographic illustration, except for two small insert sections of color photos, which almost look like stock shots from the tourist office. More illustrations located near the subjects being described would be a definite help.
not the best guide to geece.......2007-05-31
i used to only use Lonely Planet for my travels and loved it. this guide was very dissappointing. the athens info was ok, but with the islands we ended up going to it had very little info on them. even on santorini we saw tons of stuff there that was not in the book, and there were no tips on how to get resonably priced villas, which we did on our own anyways. the places we ended up staying were not in the book. the only thing we ended up using it for was fact-checking.
i would recommend 770 greek islands, the other book we had with much more info on everything.
Helpful, though would like to see better hotel & restaurant reviews........2007-05-19
I love Lonely Planet books, but I wish there was a little more for each destination regarding hotels and restaurants.

Product Description
Winner of the AAUW Juvenile Literature Award and the Clark Cox Historical Award, and a finalist for the Foreword Magazine Book of the Year Award, this is the story of 15-year-old Polly Moore, who in 1764 finds herself running her ne'er-do-well father's tavern, The Anchor, in Brunswick, on the Cape Fear River in the North Carolina Colony. Since The Anchor is the center of village activity, Polly hears everything while she cooks and serves meals, runs the turpentine operations, and cares for her pregnant mother and two younger sisters. In this meticulously researched tale populated with historical figures, spunky Polly meets her challenges and grows wise beyond her years as the infamous Stamp Act disrupts her business and she forms her own opinions about slavery and the treatment of women.
Customer Reviews:
Educators Recommend........2004-04-13
The Anchor is a compelling story that pulls the reader into the lives of the Moore family, living in Brunswick, North Carolina. The year is 1764, and fifteen-year-old Polly Moore finds herself in charge of the family's tavern---the Anchor---when her father, a gambler and alcoholic, deserts the family.
The tavern is aptly named for it is indeed an "anchor" for the town. As a bustling, central meeting place, it allows Polly the opportunity to observe, listen, and learn as the current political situation in the colonies is hotly debated and much discussed. At one point she finds herself dressed as a boy so she can serve an evening meal to the "Sons of Liberty" as they argue against the much-despised Stamp Act. Another time she sits perched in a tree as she looks down upon an armed rebellion at Governor Tryon's plantation.
Polly herself is an anchor of sorts. A spirited, likable, insatiably curious young woman, she is able to keep her family in tact while at the same time running the tavern, caring for her newborn brother, overseeing a turpentine operation as well as a sawmill.
Unlike many young women of the time, Polly is able to read. One of her favorite authors is John Locke, whose writings encourage her to think critically about the events swirling around her. Polly, with the help of Locke, begins to form her own, independent ideas about politics, slavery, and the role of women in society.
The Anchor is one of those "just right" works of historical fiction. The author includes just enough carefully researched historical detail so that the reader becomes immersed in the sights, smells, and sounds of pre-Revolutionary North Carolina. And so we are able to witness the making of soap and candles, the horrors of human bondage, the ebb and flow of everyday life in a colonial town.
The author does not, thankfully, give the reader a "happily ever after" ending with Polly being "saved" by marrying her beau, Daniel. Instead, we find her making the decision to move the family to Wilmington, which is becoming the new "center of wealth." It is a satisfying and fitting ending to a wonderfully told, perfectly paced tale.

Written with an exuberant dash of impetus.......2003-09-21
Set in America in 1764, The Anchor by Blonnie Bunn Wyche is a novel for young adults about 15-year old Polly Moore, a young girl caught in the middle of radically changing times in colonial America. As the recently passed and highly unpopular British Stamp Act makes life hard for her, Polly must come to rethink her opinions of slavery, freedom, and the treatment of women -- even as the American colonies comes closer to revolution. Written with an exuberant dash of impetus, willpower, and providing an informative and entertaining perspective on real historical figures and events, The Anchor is very highly recommended reading for teens and young adults.
