Book Description
Though he began his life as a Twin Cities resident, Calvin Rutstrum came to see noise, material wealth, and perpetual frenzy as the narcotics of the city dweller. Like Henry David Thoreau, he set out to live a simpler, more meaningful life. In his pursuit, Rutstrum came to appreciate the natural world and the skills necessary to survive in it. Part memoir, part guidebook, and part environmental treatise, Once upon a Wilderness is a treasury of wilderness wisdom.
Rutstrum reminisces about lessons that his time in the wilderness has taught him. He writes about a range of backcountry issues, including environmental preservation, cultural sensitivity toward Native Americans, the urban versus the rural, and the artistic value of practical skills. Through his thoughtful consideration of the pleasure and value of wilderness, Rutstrum offers a clarion call for a saner, more socially responsible and environmentally sensitive way of living.
Calvin Rutstrum (1895-1982) was one of the best-known outdoorsmen of his generation and the author of many books, including The Wilderness Route Finder, Paradise Below Zero, The New Way of the Wilderness, and North American Canoe Country, all published by the University of Minnesota Press.

Book Description
For the woman whose significant other spends hours glued to ESPN comes a fun and irreverent guide to understanding (and enjoying) the male-dominated world of spectator sports
From The Smart GirlÂ's Guide to Sports:
Welcome, ladies. This book will not make you a sports expert. It will not make you put down a great novel to watch football, or stop you from helping your kids with their homework because you have to watch the last five minutes of a basketball game. It will, however, give you a glimpse of why men do these things. And it will allow you to enjoy sportsÂreally, I swear.
The beautiful thing about sports, unlike, say, neurosurgery, is that a little bit of knowledge is not a dangerous thing. If youÂ're amidst a herd of men and the topic turns to sports, you only need to know a few key points and youÂ're in. If the discussion turns to home runs, for instance, and you say, ÂYes, but thereÂ's never been anything more exciting than when McGwire and Sosa were after MarisÂ's record, you instantly win a new kind of respect from the testosterone crowd.
We donÂ't have the sports gene men have. (We have other, better ones.) Thus, this book aims to give you only the most fundamental, most fun, and most entertaining informationÂthe tools to enjoy sports, or to participate in the game in whichever way you choose.
The Smart GirlÂ's Guide to Sports covers all the major professional sports: football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, soccer, boxing, and even car racing.
Each chapter includes a ÂHereÂ's How It Works section that explains the basics of the game; profiles of each sportÂ's timeless greats and Âcontemporary cool players; and a funny, readable glossary of key terms.
Customer Reviews:
Great read and resource.......2006-08-21
This book is fabulous! Take it from a woman who doesn't like things being thrown at her and therefore has no knowledge of sports, this book has been extremely useful. I work with teenagers and am amazed at the conversations that I've been able to start with just a little bit of information gathered from the pages! And now that football season has begun, I find myself watching the games with book in hand.
The book is clever and funny (which makes me want to read it because its entertaining) and explains everything in easy to understand details (I've had quite a few "A-ha" moments that I never had when men would try to explain the physics of a fly ball!). Plus, I love the sports related movies and bios on important sportsmen in each field, which helps me to actually care about the sport.
Brilliant!!.......2006-06-06
Witty and insightful look at sports. Great for both the sports enthusiast and novice alike.
Just enough for "water cooler" conversation.......2006-01-15
This book is a great intro to sports for the clueless (or semi-cluess) woman (or man, I suppose.) Musiker covers basketball, baseball, football, hockey, golf, boxing, and car racing. This book truly is basic enough for a total beginner, but myself (not a beginner with four of the sports covered) still found out things that I didn't know, and got clarification of some things I thought I understood.
Musiker gives just enough information to make you understand the game (and be able to have a conversation about it) without getting too in-depth about any aspect. She also gives short biographies on some notable players (past and present - side note - while there will always be discrepencies in these kinds of lists, I found some obvious holes that I think most people would agree with - no Yzerman on the hockey legends list? No Ken Griffey Jr. on the legends-in-training baseball list? But yet, Eli Manning on the football list? Musiker must be from the east..)
Also included are a "just know this" section which sums up the chapter, and a pretty-detailed glossary at the end of each chapter.
Overall, this is a great starter book for those new to sports (or just some of the sports covered) or could be a nice refresher for someone just above a beginner level. It can help you determine if you might have an interest in learning more about any of the sports covered. (If you want to learn more about football, "Get your own damn beer, I'm watching the game" by Holly Robinson Peete is wonderful.)
Great for all Sports Nuts.......2005-12-26
I enjoyed this book very much and found myself laughing at some of the clever quotes. I'm a man, a sports nut, and I still learned new things about a variety of sports from this book. Anybody, whether you're a sports nut or a sports novice will enjoy and learn from Liz's insightful prose.
Finally a book for the sports-challenged woman!.......2005-12-25
Finally a book that explains the mechanics of these games in a way that is entertaining and informative. I had never understood the fascination with boxing or Nascar before reading this book. Not that I'll ever be a fan but can now be a part of these conversations at work instead of on the sidelines. I'm already a reasonably knowledgeable basketball fan and still found new snippets in this book. The style is breezy and fun making the "facts" much more entertaining to learn. A great gift for anyone but especially your girlfriends who are sports-disabled!

Indespensible for Melbourne........2000-05-14
I spent several months In Melbourne the second half of 1999. It proved worth its price alone for the detailed maps which I studied constantly my first weeks there to figure out Lonsdale Street from Bourke Street and which tram goes where. It covers the high lights of everything to see and do in this wonderous city in a very compact size. While the Lonely Planet guide to Australia is useful as well, this is a must have if you plan to spent any amount of time in Melbourne. Looking back now, I wish I had taken the time to visit more of the suggested places in this guidebook.
Great book for great city.......2000-05-03
This pocket sized book followed me everywhere when I enjoyed Melbourne and its surroundings for a couple of months of 1999. The extensive map section helps you navigate without problems. Its restaurant guide is excellent, the prices and the foods are exactly as described. If you are a student or budget traveller you will find your money back with this book in no time. All events (Melbourne has got heaps of that! ) are listed with tips and details, accurate and witty. Also, you find everything you need to get to Anglesea, Torquay and Phillip Island for the surf or for the splendid nature. It's got the lots for Melbourne - simply go there with it and enjoy!

Deserted Train Station.......2005-11-17
This book was the first I read of these books, that was during the summer. This was a great book, easy to read, and left you wanting to keep reading on and on. I could not put this book down, I read it in one week!
Awful.......2005-10-16
I wish I could say this book was great.Yet it was awful. The book revoles around Tina Rivers who wants nothing more than to spend the weekend with her Boyfriend Josh at Patterson College.Yet her parents won't let her go unless her cousin Holly goes too,No big deal.Only when they arrived at the train platform Josh is not waiting like he promised.Instead his roomate Chistopher is and he says Josh is in the mountains.Yet Tina thinks why would Josh got Hiking in the mountains when he knew she was coming to visit. So he takes them to Josh's dorm to wait. Then a girl named Carla shows up and also claims Josh is with her Boyfriend Steve in the mountains.Holly then asks Carla if Christopher has a girlfriend.Carla then tells a sad story of how Chris and his girlfriend Judy were on a boat and Judy fell over and died. From here the story gets really boring from Tina searching for Josh to supposed phone calls about car trouble. To Holly disappering. To finally finding out Christopher is'nt as nice as he seems and that Tina may never see Josh again.
MARTHA.......2005-07-17
I LOVED THIS BOOK. IT'S ABOUT TINA AND HER COUSIN HOLLY. THEY ARE GOING TO SEE TINA'S BOYFRIEND BUT CHIRS TELLS THEM THAT HE IS AWAY ON A CAMPING TRIP. THEN A LOT OF WEIRD THINGS START HAPPENING. READ THIS BOOK IT'S THE BEST.
All Right.......2005-05-23
The College Weekend killer was obvious, but the motives were not obvious.Read this one if you like good Fear Street Books.
a sweetly college story with a touch of teen horror.......2004-12-24
I've just finished this book and i think it was great!
Tina and her cousin Holly visit Tina's boyfriend Josh on Patterson College. Tina can't wait to see him, but when they arrive nobody is there. After a while Josh's roommate Chris takes them from the train station. He tells them, Josh is still on a camping trip in the mountains and can't come back, because of snow. Tina is disappointed, but soon Holly and Chris persuade her to come to a party with them. There Tina loses Holly and is alone with Chris, who seems to become more and more interested in her - and doesn't interested in finding Holly. But Tina has to think of Josh so often and when she kisses Chris she feels very sorry and starts to miss Josh even more. In fact Tina starts to see signs that show her that Josh can't be on a camping trip. Chris or his friend Carla? Anybody lies and Tina has to find out!
So, that's a "short" version of this book. But, of course, I don't tell, who the "murderer" is like some other reviewers.
I hope i could help you with your decision for buying this book. I really recommend it, but the beginning is a bit boring - so, 4 Stars!

Book Description
The Little 500 is the never-before-published story of that legendary bicycle race and its trials and tribulations as Indiana University's biggest campus event. From its simple beginnings in the 1950s, the IU Student Foundation-run Little 500 evolved into an entire weekend of activities, including everything from a tricycle race to headliner shows featuring world-renowned performers. It is truly "The World's Greatest College Weekend" and has been immortalized in the Academy Award-winning movie, "Breaking Away." More than 150 color and black-and-white photos take you to the heart of the action.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2000-09-01
This book is ideal for anyone who is interested in the Little 500--an IU Student, a Little 500 rider, an IUSF member, or a curious fan. Schwarb does an amazing job going through the history of the humble beginnings of race all the way through the 1990's--detailing all of the people behind the events, the races, the up's and down's, and the emotion that made Little 5 what it is today. The Appendix includes a list of everyone who ever rode in "The Race," which makes this a great gift to former riders. Many people often ask, "What is Little 500?" This book answers that question and many more...

Customer Reviews:
I think the book was a GREAT book........1999-04-13
I think the book was excellent. I think they should of put Elizebeth a little bit more mature, but other than that.. It was excellent. I rate this book 4 stars!
It`s good for teens, but the story is quite ridiculous.......1997-12-16
In this book, the worst of all is that is that you start reading, get all excited with the story and when you`re finally going to discover what`ll happen with the Weakfield twins on the end, they write: "Find out what`ll happen with Jessica and Elizebeth on the next book.' It`s horrible! Besides that, the story is quite ridiculous because (as on all the SVH books) there are those perfect, beautyfull twins with their marvelous boyfriends in dilemas like: "Will my boyfriend find out that I`m going out with this other guyor not?" But of course, if you want to
read something easy, romantic and totally American, you`ve found it.
