3 out of 5 stars Decent first book, some insight into nature........2005-09-01

Jennifer Ackerman's "Notes from the Shore" is a decent collection of essays on the Lewes Delaware region, and it's incredible natural beauty. Contrary to a blurb, Ackerman does neglect the human side of things most often. It's all about the birds, the crabs, and other little-known but wonderous creatures. I found some of what she wrote compelling, but it was always a little uneven.

4 out of 5 stars A cautiously insightful blend of science and literature.......2000-12-05

Ackerman delivers a series of short, easy-to-read essays on life on the Delaware shore. In exploring nature's finely tuned patterns in the shore's flora and fauna, the author finds insight into the human existence. The science presented is often intriguing and her perceptions moving. However, the book is ambitious in the breadth of its focus and seems to only skim the surface of a subject matter in which Ackerman has only begun to show her mastery. I would have been more satisfied with deeper detail and exposition on the science behind and insights drawn from a narrower scope of observations and events. It must be confessed, though, that Ackerman's essays have whetted my enchantment with and interest in the world around me and this alone makes the book well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical, evocative, moving and...educational!.......2000-09-15

This is what a nonfiction book should be--thoughtful but packed with info. The author doesn't just give you a laundry list of flora and fauna--she adds her own layer of meaning. I loved it. Cried at the bit with her dad, and would like to know more, but it's probably just as well she didn't dwell on it. Recommended for a blustery day at the shore...or even for inlanders who wish they were there!

5 out of 5 stars A lyrical, interweaving of the human & natural worlds.......1999-03-11

In Notes From the Shore, Jenny Ackerman makes her mark as an important young writer. Her educated and imaginative relationship with nature makes this a unique and lovely book. The language is lyrical and sometimes startling ("stamps mate shamelessly"). Anyone with an appreciation of the natural world or fine writing will enjoy Notes from the Shore.

5 out of 5 stars A superb piece of nature writing--and more........1997-09-22

Jennifer Ackerman's Notes from the Shore is a superb piece of nature writing--and more. It is filled with personal insights, calm (but nonetheless alarming) explications of what we are doing to damage our environment, and an obvious love for its subject. Shore lovers around the world will find reading this book an enjoyable experience

      Book Description

Beloved nature writer Robert Finch spent the greater part of a decade traveling around the island of Newfoundland, at "the edge of North America." In these evocative sketches, stories, and essays, he explores the people, geography, and wildlife of a remote and lovely, but often dangerously inhospitable place. Between the icy cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean, the lush valleys and barren drifts, he collects intimate stories of birds and moose and foxes--and of the people who share their space. He evokes a landscape of raw beauty in detailed essays that ebb and flow as we make the journey with him, straining to hear the waves. But while Newfoundland may be a place of unparalleled beauty, its citizens face serious economic hardships, with the fishing industry withered and very little industry to replace it.

Finch often steps aside, allowing the Newfoundlanders' to tell their stories in their own voices, and allows us to hear the cadence and movement of individuals and their tales. A wide array of characters--fishermen, hunters, and hitchhikers, newcomers and oldtimers--bring to life an island tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures, a land of ancient hardship and stirring beauty.

                    Book Description

Chinese martial arts masters of the past created special training manuals with text and images—sometimes appearing in the illustrations themselves—and these manuals now provide an invaluable glimpse back in time that allow readers to see how various martial arts were practiced. Covering the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and the Republican Period, this in-depth survey presents 30 masters and their books, placing them in the context of Chinese culture and history. Along with biographical portraits of these masters, the book covers the history of the manuals, Chinese martial arts historians, the history of Taiwanese martial arts, how Chinese martial artists made their livings, the Imperial military exams, the place of the Shaolin Temple in Chinese martial arts history, and much more. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs and drawings from the manuals themselves, the book offers a multifaceted portrait of Chinese martial arts and their place in Chinese culture.

                    5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-09-21

This book is a relief in todays world of Martial Arts liars, thieves, and charlatans. With a field that fosters making claims of magic and mystical powers, or in the least allowing the students or practitioners to go unfettered and run rampant with thoughts of Hollywood, Hong Kong, or Wu Xia Kung Fu this is a breath of fresh air. If you want solid groundwork for dispelling the myths and mysticisms of Chinese Martial Arts then this is the book for you. Well researched and full of great references, Mr. Kennedy offers an oft-times 'no holds barred' spotlight on an industry, sub-culture, phenomenon that has thrived in the shadows for too long. It's about time a book like this was published!

5 out of 5 stars A book for every teacher who wants to go beyond the legends.......2007-06-07

It happens people think this book is the summa of the Chinese Kung Fu Manuals. Wrong.
This book analyzes the huge work done in Taiwan from the Lion pub on reissuing old CMA manuals in their original print. Some of them are today also available in English thanks to Tim Cartmell. The high value of this book is on analyzing the history and development of CMA by using documentation and not legends. The high value of this book is to tell the story of CMA historians as well as CMA master and famous people.
The way they lived, the way the got money...
Then the authors go trough the several manual by analyzing the content related to the time and environment when they were published.
Also exciting is the analysis of the different manual organization and the didactics related to the books: form the "hammering the back" body conditioning to the first schedule for drills. This book enlightens a reality a lot of practitioners wouldn't like to see by making more human and real. A book I find very exciting to read and I strongly advice to every western master who seriously want to know something more than legends about the CMA.

3 out of 5 stars For people who prefer reading to fighting.......2007-04-10

If you're mostly interested in the practice of martial arts, this book will be of only marginal value.*

If you find books about martial arts, and the history of their development, intrinsically interesting, then this is your book.

                    * (There is one exception: The off-hand revelation at the very end of the last page regarding the hand techniques of western boxing. I was stunned!)

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but too short and incomplete........2006-11-09

Fairly interesting introduction of various literary works of Ming dynasty to republican-era martial artists, which include short bios as well as fairly rare photographs. However the book seem too short and much less comprehensive than it could've been, concerning how vast the subject is. What could've been nice would be including selected direct translations of the various texts that was showcased.

More disapointedly was the lack of attention paid to southern Chinese systems compared to the Northern/Internal systems. Only a mere 2 pages or so are given to Hung Gar's Lam Sai Wing, the only representation of the southern Chinese martial arts in the whole book.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great........2006-03-23

This book is a must have for anyone with an interest in Chinese martial arts. There is a lot of good information here, some good stories, and some great pictures. Unfortunately, this book is also very frustrating. It has all the great things just mentioned, and it takes the genre of English-language books on Chinese martial arts history in a welcome departure from the usual. However, the book presents itself as almost academic, and in this aspiration it falls on its face. The call for scholarship in martial arts writing is well received by this reader, but the authors do not set an inspiring example. One glaring omission is the complete lack of citation. There is not even a bibliography, despite the fact that the bulk of the work is a series of book reviews. This lack of citation is frustrating for one who would be interested in further inquiry. The presentation therefore fails as academic, and rests in the "wanna-be" category. Better editing -- in English and in ESPECIALLY IN THEIR USE OF PINYIN -- would also help this otherwise rare example of a commendable book on this fantastic subject.

4 out of 5 stars Been there, Used it.......2004-09-14

I used this book during my six weeks in Nepal spring 2004 (trekking in Lantang, Helambu and Annapurna regions), and was glad to have it. In fact, I have my copy sitting in front of me right now! It gives detailed information on many of the better-traveled treks, along with some that are more out of the way. Plenty of information, including topo maps, to help you plan your trip or your day. Before I bought it, I sat down with several other guidebooks in an actual bookstore (yes, they do still exist!), and really felt that this one was the winner.

The most major component that I felt lacking was that there are many small guest houses or tea shops along most routes that are not mentioned at all, or that have sprung up since publication. But I soon figured that out on my own, and simply asked locals and other trekkers for advice. Overall, I definitely recommend this book. Enjoy your trip! I can't wait to go back!

*Note: Kathmandu has some great bookstores in the Thamel (tourist) district, and many (not all) books are cheaper than in the US (maybe pirated??). If you can wait, consider buying there.

4 out of 5 stars very good guidebook, but don't make it your trekking bible.........2000-02-26

this book was a great help in introducing me to the world of trekking, in terms of all the equipment i would need and the things i could expect while on a trek in nepal... it made the idea of trekking in nepal very feasible to me, and gave me confidence... but once i started trekking in nepal, i only used it as a light reference, mainly to look at the maps and see how far along i was on the trek, and perhaps to gain some information about the areas i was going through... as the author states, the suggested itineraries are not absolute, and, according to how much time and money you have, should only be used as a reference; some suggested days were too long for my group, and on other days we trekked longer distances than suggested... it's not every year you get to go to a place like nepal, so i suggest you give yourself plenty of time to enjoy your trek, take some extra rest days, and not make your trek a race...i needed more money than what this book suggested i would need; prices change... and also, especially on the annapurna trekking route, many lodges are being built every year and it's impossible for guidebooks such as this to keep up; i often thought it unfair for books like this to name specific lodges, while other lodges, some of them new, with better food and people, go unmentioned; talking with guides, porters, or other trekkers would be a good way of finding quality lodges... i think this book does a very good job of preparing you for a trek in nepal, but once you're there, keep your mind open for other sources of information, and use this book as a reference guide and not your one and only trekking "bible"... you'll get more out of your experience in nepal that way...

1 out of 5 stars Nice only for the armchair traveller........1999-12-02

I've used this book for 2 treks in Nepal and it was a disappoinment (the book, not the treks). As mentioned above, the book provides a plethora of trekking essentials (preparation, etc.) and background info. To use it as a guide on the actual trail is altogether another matter.

The maps are too general and is NOT suitable for actual guidance. The suggested itinerary varies too greatly for the average trekker. Some suggested trekking days that are way too difficult to complete or way too short. Things are changing quickly in Nepal...and the book does not keep up with this adequately.

I've meet many people on the trail that were also dissapointed in the misinformation regarding festival dates. The Nepalese use a lunar calendar so it is easy to see why the dates can be off from year to year. It is unfortunate if someone plans their vacation by this. There are too many misleading information here...and for a foreigner/tourist/traveller/trekker, this can prove disappointing and costly.

Take it from someone who's been there, use this book to entertain yourself, not to trek with.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest trekking guide to Nepal.......1999-05-15

I bought it when I was planning to travel to Nepal. Unfortunately, I couldn't go, but the informations on the book helped me a lot to get in contact with nepali culture and details about trekking in this interesting country.

5 out of 5 stars What the Nepal trekker needs to know: it's all here........1999-03-05

This latest edition of Stan Armington's guide to trekking in the Nepal Himalaya (note the lack of an "s", as in "Sierra") provides a panoply of information for both the trekker and the armchair traveler. First traveling to Nepal in the mid-sixties, Mr. Armington has lived there since 1971. He has been in the business of organizing treks longer than almost anyone. He knows the country and the people and writes from a wealth of first-hand knowledge.

Whether one treks solo (not recommended, really, but certainly possible) or with a trekking company, this informative book provides ALL the information one needs to have a successful, delightful, and authentic trekking experience in this ancient and remote kingdom. (Nepal is a Hindu kingdom, with a Hindu king.)

As Mr. Armington acknowledges, trekking is neither a walk in the country nor a climbing experience. Hence, he goes into great detail to prepare the adventurer for what will for most people be one of the major vacationing events of their lives.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. A visitor must know how to take care of oneself and also how to have a minimal impact on the environment and social structure. Mr. Armington covers all these matters excellently.

The trekking routes are there, too, almost all of them walked--and measured (with a GPS)--by the author to ensure complete accuracy.

Armchair travelers will enjoy the color pictures and the descriptions of the land and its people. Travelers and trekkers will want to devour the information, basically cover-to-cover.

For someone planning a trek to the Nepal Himalaya, this book is an absolute essential. It should be used through all stages of planning and carried in the rucksack on the trek. It's that good, and that necessary, and that complete--a distillation of a adult lifetime of experience in the region by a world-reknown travel professional--in a word, a real bargain.

                        Book Description

Thirteen-year-old Jackie Monterey wants to write a novel the summer before he starts high school. There's just one problem - he can't get past the first sentence. His friends are no help. When Nick isn't combing his hair or dealing with his fear of dogs, he's checking out girls. Gary is either obsessed with perfecting his new English accent or just idolizing Nick. And Jackie's best friend, Mallory, a theme park fanatic, is caught up in her own writing project - a contest essay to win a trip to Kingdom of Magic. It looks like Jackie might finally find inspiration when he joins the swim team and falls in love with the coach's daughter. But things start to get weird when Nick hooks up with a dog-crazy girlfriend and Mallory begins reciting poetry with a goon from the rival swim team. Before the summer is over, everything Jackie has counted on to stay the same has changed, and everyone is giving him advice about how to live his life. They couldn't be right, could they?

                        A Review by Mike

Jackie, the main character, is on his summer vacation. He wants to write a novel but his mom, dad, and friends keep on interrupting him. He wants to be alone so he can finish his novels. Jackie doesn't know what his friend Nick is up too. Nick, his best friend, is trying to get him a girl friend. He did get him a date. The girl, Jackie, and his best friend and his girl went out on a date. Jackie's parents also try to make Jackie go to camp every summer, but not this time. His parents wanted him to go to computer camp this summer, but he didn't go.

I liked the story How I Survived My Summer Vacation. It was a great book for kids that are writing novels. They could learn how hard it is to write. Jackie, the main character, wasn't all that funny, but you could learn a lot from him. Jackie in the story he gives some good ideas to write about. Things I didn't like about the story are his mom and dad didn't seem all that funny or weren't talked about as much as Jackie was. They seemed like a boring couple of parents. When they said they were going to send Jackie to computer camp, I would have gone because they said if he went they would buy him his own computer to play with. I would have gone for it but he had to finish his novels.

I would recommend this book for people that have a good thinking skill. Plus for people who like novels or like writing novels. This book for starting up the year was awesome. What I mean is it was easy to read and follow in the story. It might also give you some ideas about the summer.

5 out of 5 stars The Great American Novel.......2003-03-15

Jackie Monterey, and his struggle to write a novel over his summer vacation, but can't seem to get past the opening line. Jackie's friends are no help. Nick and Garus, are always trying to get Jackie to do stupid adventures with them. Nick, is always checking out the ladies. Garus, (Gary) is trying to copy Nicks slick moves to get the ladies, and trying to perfect his "English Accent." Mallory is a theme park fanatic. She is trying to write a essay to win five tickets to "Kingdom of Magic" ( a famous theme park). Jackie's parents are reporters and tell Jackie to write what he knows. Jackie's parents, are very weaird and cautious on what they eat. Jackie reminds me of a real life kid. He has trouble with girls, his parents are weaird, and he wants to write a novel. So, if you like a book where you can relate to the character's, "How I Survived My Summer Vacation and Lived To Write The Story" is the book for you.

                        5 out of 5 stars nay.......2002-10-27

How I Survived My Summer Vacation, and Lived to Write the Story, by Robin Friedman was one of the best books I have ever read. The plot revolved around a boy named Jackie Montery, who wanted to write a novel over his summer vacation. Each time he sat down to write, he was disrupted by his immature friends who wanted to fool around.
One immature thing they wanted to do was join the swim team. The main reason for this was to look at girls in bikinis. Another immature thing they did was crawl through a sewer and see where they would end up. Probably the most immature things they did were swear into a tape recorder and then replayed it and looked for a Playboy in the woods. The only one they found was one with its pictures cut out.
There were three main characters in this book, Jackie, Garus and Nick. Garus and Nick were Jackie's best friends who liked to do stupid things. Garus was always with Nick. He looked up to him also. He admired his way with the ladies. Nick was the brains behind all of the stupid ideas. Jackie always wanted to lock him self in his room and type.
The setting of the book took place in a town called Frog Hollow. It was a small town like Catskill, where everyone knew each other.
The mood of this book was kind of funny. I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys humor, especially for teens ages 13-14. My favorite part of the book was when they tried to crawl through the sewer.

4 out of 5 stars How I Survived My Summer Vacation.......2002-06-02

Jackie Monterey had always thought of himself as a writer, and so he had vowed on the lives of his fish-Mark Twain, Dashiell Hammett, and Isaac Asimov-to finish a novel during his summer vacation. However, he never got past the opening line of his novel. In addition, he was convinced by his friends-Mallory, Nick, and Garus-to join the swim team. From there on, Jackie found everything going wrong; his coach¡¦s beautiful daughter seemed to like him, Garus began to disobey Nick, whom he had always admired, Nick started dating a dog-lover etc. Even his weird parents were making big money from their crazy, unfashionable health products. It wasn¡¦t until the last few days of his summer vacation that Jackie had found out what was wrong. He needed to have an open mind, a more accepting mind, and not see everything his way. With that in mind, Jackie wrote a winning essay about his summer that won five other people and him a trip to the Kingdom of Magic.
To me, this is just a typical contemporary fiction that talks about the problems of a teenager. It isn¡¦t really such an exciting story. The events that take place in this story rarely get my interests. Nevertheless, all these not exciting events accumulate to make a pretty good conflict. As a result, the climax turns out to be wonderful and the resolution was satisfying. It seems like the author suppressed all the good stuff throughout the book and released them on the last twenty pages.
My favorite part of this story is when Jackie is in the swim meet. The swim team from Frog Hollow has never beaten the swim team from Brewster before. But this year, the swim coach of Frog Hollow is confident in winning, in Jackie¡¦s talents. Jackie has never known of his swimming talents until he joined the swim team. He was trained for hours at a time by his coach and he was ready for the meet. When it was his turn to swim, Jackie just jumped into the swimming pool and swam naturally. He was calm and relaxed. When he finished his laps, he turned around and saw his opponent still struggling to finish his.

Jack Monterey is trying to write a novel before school starts up again in the fall.
