Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good field guide and beautiful picture book.......2005-05-31

Perhaps I am going overboard in giving this guide a five star review but even a book with an adequate selection of color photos of marine invertebrates is just so darn beautiful I can't help but cause me to rave and this bok offers a selection that is more than just adequate. There is no way one can include all of the seashore creatures of US into one volume let alone a field guide and Audubon guides are not the best things to use for taxonomy. That being said it is a gorgeous little book and certainly helpful to the average beachcomber. Even if you are a Midwestern landlubber this is a great little volume. If nothing else consider it a mini coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars If Frosted Flakes are grrrrrreat, this is so much better.......2002-04-09

I live in North Carolina and catch and keep a lot of Invertebrates we we go to the beach. So far, every Invert that we've caught has been in this book, easy to find and we found out alot about it by reading. Anyone who sees something cool at the beach often should get this book. In fact, it's a Must-Have.

3 out of 5 stars OK for the Basics.......2001-08-18

I think that all of North Americas sea shore critters can not be described in a single book. Certainly not in a book of this size. The publishers where quite bold in the scope and as such much information has been left out. That said let me tell you what is good about this book. The pictures are GREAT! Much better than looking at technical drawings. However, they are not better for identification. The descriptions of animal groups are excellent. For the person with little biological background this will go a good way toward explaining the complexities of ocean life. The method of identification, sorting by superficial appearance is handy, again for the inexperienced. To sum it up, if you want one book to carry during your first summer of beach combing get this one. If you need a companion for a marine zoology class stay away, unless you already have everything else.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-11-30

Anyone who has used the National Audubon's Field Guides knows just how great they are. This one is no exception. Great picture plates and acccurate descriptions of organisms. For the biologist to the beach hopper, this book is easy to use and very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Nature Watchers.......2000-04-03

I found out about Marine creatures in my Marine Bio. class, and I loved them, so I got this book to further my looking into their world, and it's great. A must have for any person interested in going to the seashore, and just watching what runs around in those tidepools and on the beach.

Unprecedented in content, Provincetown and the National Seashore offers readers a unique and cohesive group of Provincetown images: from candid portraits of Provincetown residents and celebrities, seasonal landscapes and wildlife, to everyday street scenes from the town's renowned summer season. Over a year in the making, the color photo essay book artistically chronicles Charles Fields's first year in Provincetown, taking readers on a journey of people, places and history in a highly personal and contemporary collection. 5 out of 5 stars A Combination of Natural Beauty and the Unique.......2003-09-14

If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, many photographers both amateur (me) and professional, will be in awe of this book. It will also be loved and appreciated by tourists who visit the area. I first came across this book last year when I did a slide show on Cape Cod and needed a few shots of this portion of the Cape. I did not copy Mr. Fields' work (largely because I am not as gifted a photographer), but the book inspired me. This is due to his interesting perspective of the area. His best photographs are those of the dunes and the areas along the national seashore, but he also includes typical Cape Cod shots such as vacationers, fishing boats, and historical landmarks. He also includes photographs of a few of the more outlandish sides of Provincetown, which makes Provincetown fun for many people and shows that Fields is adept at using his camera to tell a story.

5 out of 5 stars Brings the Outer Cape to light.......2002-06-18

I was blown away with the quality and breadth of the images in this unusual photo essay book. I love both Provincetown and photography, so you can imagine my excitement in discovering the book on Amazon.

Fields seems to have a knack for capturing the subtle and beautiful Cape light many artists and tourists flock to see. Surprisingly, he also has a fair number of fun and stunning portraits in the collection.

I would recommend thia book for anyone who loves photography or the Cape. It's also an easy and obvious gift selection for my friends.

Book Description

The breathtaking landscapes of America's national parks reveal the processes that shape our planet.

Many of our national parks, monuments, and seashores were established because of their inspiring geological features. The geysers of Yellowstone, the volcanoes of Hawaii, and the granite peaks of Yosemite bear witness to the "national park idea" as one of our country's greatest contributions to society. Parks and Plates explains the fascinating geological processes that formed the mountain ranges, volcanoes, shorelines, and other dramatic landscapes of America's national treasures.

Robert J. Lillie, a gifted teacher and expert on park geology, takes a unique approach to the subject. By structuring each section of Parks and Plates around major geological features, Lillie highlights geologic patterns across many different parks. He explains these fascinating landforms using examples from over 100 park sites to introduce and illustrate plate tectonics, a simple yet eloquent way to visualize geological processes. Lavishly illustrated throughout with full color photographs, diagrams, and maps, Parks and Plates will enrich the National Park experience for curious travelers and armchair explorers alike. 336 full-color illustrations.

Balancing the fast-moving text are richly illustrated explanations of geological ideas and terminology and helpful color photographs depicting specific examples. 4 out of 5 stars Solid Travel Guide for National Parks and Land in Eastern US.......2003-12-06

This is it -- the official travel guide to national parks and other federal lands of the National Park Foundation. Fodor's has put this book out and it is an excellent travel guide and introduction to 25 or so major attractions east of the Mississippi (plus two in Arkansas and one in Minnesota).

The first chapter has basic travel info including safety tips, park entrance fee information, suggestions on further detailed info for those interested and other general stuff that is helpful to those journeying out among our national public lands.

The chapters on individual parks are well organized over about twenty pages that gives enough information to serve as a total travel guide for those considering a visit. Each park has a good two tone map that is easy to read and provides good orientation. Besides information on what to do, trail options, fees and the basics, there is a helpful "if you only have one day" that allows whirlwind travelers the opportunity to focus on the memorable and highlights to give as good of a flavor of the particular park that one can acquire between sunup and sundown.

The only drawback is that the book has no pictures, so readers will probably want to check out online guides for those that pique their interests or use this book after they have seen photos of park attractions.

It is very well organized and a good essential for those planning park trips.

Don't look here for hotel or restaurant info. This is a beach book, so check in here by county to see the well-known beaches and those that will surprise you. The author selected Hammocks Beach State Park as the best of the lesser known beaches. He suggests the best beaches for first time visitors, the best for sports oriented vacations, and the best for visiting in the off-season.
The information is detailed, giving the things you need to know for your vacation. Want a boat ramp, or to see a lighthouse? This books tells you where to go. (The Associated Press reviewed this book favorably.)

5 out of 5 stars Guide to Point Reyes for Avid Hikers.......2002-02-14

California and Oregon coasts are homes to much hidden beauties and treasures. The Point Reyes National Seashore is just one of the hidden pearls. "Exploring Point Reyes" is by far the most updated, complete, and enthusiastic guide to the seclusive peninsula about 25 miles northwest of San Francisco. Many Point Reyes guide books I found at the bookstore are outdated though they contribute an abundance of information.

"Exploring Point Reyes" refreshes the minds of those who dream of Point Reyes. The guide come with photos of Drakse Estero, Tomales Bay, the Point Reyes Lighthouse standing 330 steps down the valley on the tip of the peninsula, and more. The impact of Point Reyes is most dramatic at the meeting of land and sea. The guide has captured such beauty with the photos.

"Exploring Point Reyes" also provides information and cautionary advice about beaches within the national seashore. The book gives to direction to good protected beach for wading, picnicking, or just lying in the sun. The coverage on the Point Reyes Lighthouse is excellent. One of the greatest location for whale-watching is the lighthouse observation platform from December to April.

"Exploring Point Reyes" also satisfies the desires of adventurous hikers with info on less-known hiking trails. Trail maps are abundant in the book. The coverage on trails is divided into three types of terrain that distinguishes the trail systems of Point Reyes. Whether you're planning a camping trip, a hike-a-thon, or just a one-day photography session at Point Reyes, this book will allow you to see and experience the beauty of the Point Reyes peninsula. Avid hikers should not miss the book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great format for most.......2002-01-31

This review speaks only for the book's format and NOT for the accuracy of its information.
Good Points
· Complete for the title area. If it's west of Highway 1, it's included.
· Clear narrative. Text gives mileposts and includes highlights and cautions
· Rating scheme with best season for the trail. The scenic quality is numerically rated and trail difficulty factors are provided to include seasonal changes in the trail. Provides Pt. Reyes microclimate info by season that may lead to choosing one trail over another given the month or local weather
· 3-D trail maps. NOT topo maps, but some may find that these maps are easier to read
· "Best Trails" summary. Assists the hiker with limited time in the area for making trail selection based on eight criteria
· Naturalist section. Almost half the book has black-and-white plant and animal identifier illustrations and other naturalist info
Weak Points
· Currency of info. Publishing date is 1997. Trail conditions have changed.

· Lack of precise topo info. So, what do you need? Easy-to-read 3-D slanted terrain maps or overhead topo maps with elevation lines and numbers?
· No GPS waypoint info. Many of us now have handheld GPS receivers and want waypoints for trailheads, trail intersections, and scenic points as a minimum requirement
Summary: With the exception of lacking topo and GPS info, this book would be the only resource one would need for Pt. Reyes.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for hikes in the Point Reyes Area!.......1997-10-27

This is probably the best all-around guide to the Point Reyes National Seashore for any outdoor enthusiast. It features wonderful in-depth trail maps and descriptions for 37 hikes in the area, arranged by trailhead. In addition to very specific trail descriptions and maps, detailed information is presented on the difficulty, terrain type, and seasonal recommendations for each trail described.

But there's more! The book is packed with information about the history, geology, flora and fauna of the area, including black-and-white illustrations. Sections on exploring tidepools, precautions and general area information make this a very complete guide that would be very helpful to any visitor to the area. It's small enough to take along on your travels, but don't let that fool you - this guide covers just about everything you'd need.
