Book Description
Steelhead salmon have become a powerful symbol to outdoor enthusiasts and organizations; they represent the last of the wild and are to the Northwest what lions are to the Serengeti. Traveling through the Cascade Mountains in Oregon, the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, and into British Columbia, Michael Checchio recounts his progression toward rivers and landscapes ever more remote and increasingly wild and pristine as he searches for the wildest fish of all in one of the loneliest settings on earth.

ASIN: B000FDFWFK |
Book Description
Americas favorite sportswriter teams up with Red Auerbach, the most successful and admired coach in basketball history, to tell the best stories of a legendary life.
Living legend Arnold "Red" Auerbach led the Boston Celtics to nine NBA championships--eight of them consecutive-- during his 17-year tenure in Boston from 1950 to 1966. The fiery coach is a unique personality--brash, opinionated, and unfailingly accurate. As a coach he never stood still along the sidelines, and in retirement he remains a lively part of the game, still consulted by coaches, players, and general managers at age 86.
For years, John Feinstein has met regularly with Red Auerbach and his friends, drawing out Reds life story in a raucous series of unforgettable sessions. From those smoke- and laughter-filled rooms come these colorful reports about all the players and coaches Red has worked with and played against over the years. Bob Cousy, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Sam Jones, Bill Russell, and Michael Jordan--you name them, the basketball greats are all here. Red Auerbachs incredible experiences in sports and John Feinsteins unparalleled skill as a sports storyteller make this one of the greatest books to come out of the game of basketball.
Red Auerbach has come across all kinds of characters throughout his years in sports and has opinions to offer and amazing stories to tell about all of them.
A book about a true sports legend by an extraordinarily popular sportswriter will appeal to all sports fans.
John Feinstein has written two of the bestselling sports books of all time, A Good Walk Spoiled (over 756,000 combined copies sold) and A Season on the Brink (over one million combined copies sold), and has regularly landed on the bestseller lists during the past two decades. His most recent book, Caddy for Life, was published in April 2004.
Customer Reviews:
what took me so long to read this book?.......2007-10-12
I'm not the greatest John Feinstein fan. Sometimes he's really good, but sometimes he just seems like he's trying to be elitist. But when I heard about this book, I put it on my list to buy. Two years later I finally got around to it. My loss.
Red Auerbach was the institutional memory of the NBA as well as the guy who created the Celtic dynasty. He was a master storyteller and collector of people. This book is the story of lunch with Red every Tuesday, 11am @ the China Doll restaurant. Just as importantly it is the story of the people Red collected and his influence on their lives.
No one will claim this book is objective-it's not supposed to be. I'm sure Red had flaws, but I really don't care. For older boomers he and John Wooden define greatness in basketball. I'm just glad to have the stories.
Sports History with Local Flavor.......2007-07-15
I read 10 pages of this book while waiting in the doctor's office & bought 3 copies the same day.. one for my dad, one for my brother & one for me.
Great stories & since I'm a native Washingtonian, I love the stories about DC & one of the greatest characters & coaches of all time.
did i ever tell you the story over and over.......2007-05-13
well i was never a celtic or red auerbach fan growing up although i always rooted for bird over magic, so the review title is a tad mean, but i blame that on feinstein and his editor who, he claims, is one of the best ever and he really means it (it must be part of their contract.)
red does have a few good stories and if you skim the book you will probably not hear the same one more than twice, but the landon turner story is worth the cost of the book by itself (although i bought mine on the remainder table at half-price books for $3.00 so caution may still be the watchword.)
i really expected more stories about the nba greats and a lot fewer about his doctor, brother, friends in the secret service, mike wallace's son and sundry other non-entities (at least as far as the nba goes.)
and for my final beef, how can you get the guy who coached one of more interesting sports personalities of the past 50 years - and i am referring to gene conley, who won a world series ring and an nba championship back to back and made less than $40,000 doing it - and not ask about him. what a wasted opportunity. also no mention in entire book of jerry west, oscar robertson, pete maravich and probably your favorite player, whoever that may be. a pretty lame effort compared to what it might have been, but nevertheless very good, because of the person doing the reminiscing.
I give this book ten stars.......2007-03-12
All age groups should enjoy this book, but people who remember Red leading the Celtics will particularly enjoy it. You don't have to be a Celtics fan to enjoy this book. Feinstein does a great job of telling numerous entertaining stories that provide great insights into Red. You come away from this book not only enjoying the stories but also loving Red because it was obvious that this was a man who truly loved life. The book primarily deals with basketball stories that you will love but it also addresses Red's interaction with his close and diverse group of "lunch buddies". This part of the book provides an extra charm. I couldn't put this book down. It is one of the most enjoyable sports books I have ever read---right up there with the best stuff Roger Kahn and Roger Angell ever wrote.
Disappointing.......2007-02-16
I was expecting a lot more anecdotes about the NBA and its players. An inordinate amount of this book is taken up with discussing Red's post-retirement weekly roundtable lunch and the various participants. Hearing about a bunch of middle aged and old guys sitting around eating chow mein and idolizing Red is not very entertaining.
I have no doubt that all of Red's adventures in the NBA would make a fantastic book. Unfortunately, this is not that book.

Customer Reviews:
Everything the traveller needs to know about Viet Nam.......2002-08-13
I just got back from a three week trip to Viet Nam, and would have been lost without my trusty LP guidebook. I travelled from north to south and was never at a loss with the help of this book. Granted LP should have put in diacritics because without them, communication breaks down when you don't know the tones, but the in depth research and care that went into this book (and subsequently, all of LP's books) shines through to provide the reader with a competant, user-friendly travel guide. Plus, LP is much more gay-friendly than the other guidebook series.
Don't travel to Vietnam without it.......2002-07-28
I bought the Vietnam LP on advice from my roomate who never travels to a new place without one. The Vietnam LP soon became my bible in Vietnam, not to mention every other travelers that I met there as well. In fact kids on the streets of Hanoi and Saigon often sell photocopied versions of these LP's to tourists. No other tourist book is more popular there, and for good reason.
I used my LP all the time. I kept a bottle of water under one arm (Vietnam in July is hot) and my lonely planet under the other. Every question I could possibly think of LP had an answer for and a story and a map to go along with it. Honestly I can't recommend a book higher.
A victim of its own popularity.......2002-06-11
LP Vietnam, as several others have mentioned, is misleading and out of date. But even worst, is that it tries to scare most travelers into following its suggested itinerary instead of venturing out on their own. I was going to outline some of the more glaring mistakes, but other reviews beat me to the punch.
In defense of LP, who have produced decent guidebooks in the past, Vietnam may be changing at such a fast pace that as soon as it was published much of the information was already out of date. However, not all the mistakes can be blamed on a country in the throws of rapid changes and as such as easily dismissed.
Hopefully the next edition will have greatly improved and won't be written in such an amateurish way. However, I think I'll pass and try the Rough Guide or take my chances without a guidebook! What a novel idea...
Not the most accurate picture of Vietnam.......2002-02-11
I spent this summer studying in Vietnam, and it became clear that the Vietnam in the LP is quite different than the real Vietnam I saw with my own eyes.
I think the book was intended for travelling businessmen who only plan on staying in Vietnam for a few days, and have plenty of money to spend for plush hotels. This is regrettable since there is so much more to Vietnam than tourist traps, tourist-oriented restaraunts, and hotels.
For example, in my first couple weeks in Hanoi, Vietnam, I followed the book's suggestions for restaraunts, only to realize they were severely overpriced, and not nearly as tasty (or exotic) as the more "local" restaraunts. Before long, I stopped going to the LP's preferred restaraunts altogether. Only when I stopped following the LP altogether did I really start to delve into Vietnamese culture, both the good and bad.
Also, the LP tends to whitewash the more unpleasant aspects of Vietnam, such as being harassed by people on the street, who are more than eager to rip you off, and the grueling poverty. If one really wants to appreciate Vietnam, these less pleasant factors have to be taken into account.
If you plan on just "visiting", but don't really plan on getting to know the culture, this book may be enough. However, to truly appreciate both the good and bad of Vietnam, I suggest avoiding this book, or at least not relying on it too much.
A Must Have Guidebook When In Vietnam!.......2001-08-12
I recently spent about 3 weeks in Vietnam. It was a great trip and I highly recommend visiting Vietnam to anyone who enjoys travelling in Asia.
With that said, I feel that during a trip to Vietnam, the Lonely Planet book is absolutely one of the most important books to have, to read before you go, to look at while you are there, and to reflect back upon when you get home.
The book was great. It was so good, that I was constantly passing it up and down the bus to other people on the trip. Everyone used it, and to my surprize there were some people that had never used a Lonely Planet book. LP is the best, and they have never let me down. There Vietnam book is no exception.
If you are going to Vietnam, buy and use this book.
It is a great purchase.

Customer Reviews:
Looking for an interesting book?? Check it out!!.......2007-05-25
I read the book Amandine by Adele Griffin, I thought the book was really
good. The reason I found this book to be interesting was because you wanted to keep reading to see what would happen at the end. I enjoy books that keep you going or I won't stay interested in what I'm reading. I don't know about you guys but I also like fast reading books, so you don't take forever to finish them. This book was everything for me it was easy, fast reading, and worth while reading. Now, I bet you guys are interested in what the book was about. It was about this girl named Amandine that was one person on the outside but when you got to know her she was another. She started attending James Dewolf High School and met a girl name Delia. When Delia met her she thought she was this sweet girl that was scared of her new school so she thought she would become her friend. Until, one day when Amandine started making bad drawings and making stories up about Delia's family. Doesn't sound like a good friend, does it? That is where you will have to read the book
to see what happens with their friendship. I personally thought this was an excellent book because of how the author worded everything and gave great detail. I'm not a very good reader, and don't enjoy it. This book was a one of my favorites though. The ending wasn't the way I predicted it to be, but that's what made it exciting. Now, my challenge to you guys is to read the book and let me know what you think. I can't wait to hear about it!
tight little drama..vacant little soul.......2006-07-16
The title character, a chilling chameleon, has reacted to her parents' narcissism by turning into a shape-shifter, doing and saying whatever she can to get attention and feel important. Delia, the narrating character, is a serious, lonely girl, shut out by the intensity of her parents' connection. Excellent writing, deft characterization, meaningful exploration of possible courses of action, and a look at just how chilling real life can be, without any need to layer in horror; all these elements add up to a first rate YA read, in my book.
"Ah, nobody learns anything from being happy.".......2006-01-28
Amandine was a book that I bought in a middle school book fair, but never got around to reading. I decided to pick it up one day and was very glad I did.
The writing is very good. True, it's not the most sophisticated thing you'll ever read, but it isn't cutesy or puerile at all. I think Griffin's deceptively simple writing is the very thing that makes the whole thing work. She doesn't over- dramatize anything, she just tells it like is.
What I loved most about this book was the title character. Amandine is a truly vivid and fascinating person. Everything about her felt real and original. She's got this horrible delicacy veiled behind her fire engine lipstick and eccentric wardrobe tributes to actresses. I loved it how she didn't do anything really huge. Just little, unsettling things just enough to disturb the reader. Nothing that would get her checked into a hospital, but the kind of things that would make a parent uneasy if their child befriended her.
I thought the protagonist's parents were also interesting. They weren't horrible people, but I found myself intensely disliking them. They were cold and distant with Delia (the protagonist) and were only interested in her being how they felt she should be. I know Delia's mother was doing the right thing in trying to help Delia with her overeating, but the way she went about it wasn't good. Whether inadvertently or not, she made her daughter feel terrible about herself.
Delia latched onto Amandine so quickly and eagerly because she doesn't get enough acceptance at home. That's my theory, any way. She wants someone to accept her. What person doesn't?
Frightening story that hits close to home.......2005-11-16
In the very first chapter of this book, a girl is asked by another if she wants to take a peek at "some of the ugliest things she's ever seen." Thus begins Amandine, a dark tale about how friendship can go wrong in the early teen-age years. Griffin writes skillfully about how people are sometimes attracted to ugliness, especially if they are lonely and looking for fun and excitement, like the protaganist, Delia. In her longing for friendship and acceptance, Delia ignores her better judgement and befriends Amandine, overlooking the warning signs until it's too late.
Based on the editorial reviews, I was expecting some kind of horrifying psycological drama. But the book is actually more tame than I'd expected. Amandine only does one really alarming thing, telling a serious lie in a childish attempt to break up Delia's family. Other than that her behaviour is never very alarming nor unusual - she skips school, draws cruel drawings of her classmates and does other things you'd expect from a slightly maladjusted highschool freshmen. But this familarity only brings the novel closer to home, especially for freshmen girls. The book seems to be written especially for them, and it's well worth their time to read it and analyse their friendships while in the process. It's quite likely there's at least one Amandine at their own high school.
Amandine stop lying.......2005-04-29
Amandine is a good book, it deals with the life of a two teenagers that are friends but they get into a fight. Delilah Blaine moves to a new school(James DeWolf High School). When she tries to make new friends everything goes wrong. Amandine draws a picture that makes fun of Mary Whitecomb. She blaims the drawing on Delilah and now everybody starts to hear things about Delilah that Amandine is making up about her. You should read this book because it deals with a lot of thing that teenagers go through. I mostly recommend this book for girls.

Book Description
Since the first experimental achievement of Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) in 1995 and the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2001, the properties of these gaseous quantum fluids have been the focus of international interest in condensed matter physics. This monograph is dedicated to the mathematical modeling of some specific experiments which display vortices and to a rigorous analysis of features emerging experimentally.
In contrast to a classical fluid, a quantum fluid such as a Bose–Einstein condensate can rotate only through the nucleation of quantized vortices beyond some critical velocity. There are two interesting regimes: one close to the critical velocity, where there is only one vortex that has a very special shape; and another one at high rotation values, for which a dense lattice is observed.
One of the key features related to superfluidity is the existence of these vortices. We address this issue mathematically and derive information on their shape, number and location. In the dilute limit of the experiments, the condensate is well described by a mean field theory and a macroscopic wave function solving the so-called Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The mathematical tools employed are energy estimates, Gamma convergence, and homogenization techniques. We prove existence of solutions that have properties consistent with the experimental observations. Open problems related to recent experiments are presented.
The work can serve as a reference for mathematical researchers and theoretical physicists interested in superfluidity and quantum condensates, and can also complement a graduate seminar in elliptic PDEs or modeling of physical experiments.
