Micromammals and Macroparasites: From Evolutionary Ecology to Management
Serge, Ed. Morand Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 4431360247 |
Book Description
Small mammals are among the most ubiquitous and important components of terrestrial ecosystems. They have coevolved, and now coexist, with a diverse array of parasites, such that not only are all aspects of their biology influenced by parasitism but they also play key roles in the transmission and maintenance of parasitic diseases. This book provides a comprehensive survey of the diversity and biology of metazoan parasites affecting small mammals, of their impact on host individuals and populations, and of the management implications of these parasites for conservation biology and human welfare. Designed for a broad, multidisciplinary audience, it will be an essential resource for researchers, students, and practitioners alike in the fields of parasitology, evolutionary ecology, wildlife management, and conservation biology.

African Apes (All Apes Great and Small, Volume 1) (Developments in Primatology: Progress and Prospects)
Birute M. F., Ed. Galdikas Manufacturer: Plenum Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0306467577 |
Book Description
Many of the papers in this volume were first presented at the Third International Great Apes of the World Conference, held July 3-6, 1998 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The editors of this volume, the first in a two-volume series, are world renowned, having dedicated most of their lives to the study of great apes. The world's premiere primatologists, ethologists, and anthropologists present the most recent research on both captive and free-ranging African great apes. These scientists, through deep personal commitment and sacrifice, have expanded their knowledge of chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas. With forests disappearing, many of these studies will never be duplicated. This volume, and all in the Developments in Primatology book series, aim to broaden and deepen the understanding of this valuable cause.

Activity Patterns In Small Mammals: An Ecological Approach (Ecological Studies)
S., Ed. Halle Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 354059244X |
Book Description
Environmental conditions change considerably in the course of 24 h with respect to abiotic factors and intra- and interspecific interactions. These changes result in limited time windows of opportunity for animal activities and, hence, the question of when to do what is subject to fitness maximisation. This volume gives a current overview of theoretical considerations and empirical findings of activity patterns in small mammals, a group in which the energetic and ecological constraints are particularly severe and the diversity of activity patterns is particularly high. Following a comparative ecological approach, for the first time activity timing is consequently treated in terms of behavioural and evolutionary ecology, providing the conceptual framework for chronoecology as a new subdiscipline within behavioural ecology. An extensive Appendix gives an introduction to methods of activity modelling and to tools for statistical pattern analysis.

On Our Own Terms: Race, Class, and Gender in the Lives of African-American Women
Leith Mullings Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0415912865 |
Book Description
This volume utilizes the cross-cultural, historical and ethnographic perspective of anthropology to illuminate the intrinsic connections of race, class and gender. The author begins by discussing the manner in which her experience as a participant observer led her to research and write about various aspects of African-American women's experiences. She goes on to provide a critical analysis of the new scholarship on African-American women, and explores issues of race, class and gender in the arenas of work, kinship and resistance.
The first section explores the fundamental issue of how work outside the home conditions the experience of gender, while essays in the second section challenge traditional definitions of the family and explore the role of culture, history and society in conditioning household structure and function. The essays in the final section explore transformative strategies in politics and in the academy.
On Our Own Terms concludes by examining the implications of issues raised in the volume for the feminist agenda and for our understanding of social processes.

Feeling Strong: How Power Issues Affect Our Ability to Direct Our Own Lives
Ethel S. Person Manufacturer: Harper Paperbacks ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0060555440 Release Date: 2003-10-07 |
Book Description
In Feeling Strong, noted psychoanalyst Ethel S. Person redefines the notion of power. The stigma of evil we associate with the subject of power comes from this one conception of power -- the drive for dominance over other people, or, in its most extreme form, an overriding and often ruthless lust for total command. But this is far too limited a definition.
Pointing to a more fulfilling sense of self-empowerment than is being touted in pop-psychology manuals of our time, Feeling Strong shows us that power is really our ability to produce an effect, to make something we want to happen actually take place. Power is a desire and a drive, and it is central in our lives, dictating much of our behavior and consuming much of our interior lives.
Drawing from her expertise honed in clinical practice, as well as from examples in literature and true-life vignettes, Person shows how you can achieve authentic power to find something that matters; to feel inner certainty; to find a personality of your own and effectively plot your life story.

Bias reaches every level of society, from institutions and systems to the everyday interactions between people. And bias is rarely obvious, often hidden from view and difficult to acknowledge and challenge. With the continuing changes in child care today, how can teachers offer children and their parents a bias-free environment? How do early childhood professionals start anti-bias programs in thier own settings? By learning from those who have worked in the field before them.
In Our Own Way: How Anti-Bias Work Shapes Our Lives is filled with the personal stories of people who have worked to establish anti-bias environments in their careers in child care. Each of the stories is a unique look at how the writers learned to think critically in their own lives as well as how theyve learned to teach this skill, among others, in their anti-bias work. And each shares that it is workrequiring constant communication, energy, vigilance, and the passion for trying to make positive changes in the community.
Early childhood professionals at every level will be inspired by the voices of the writers of In Our Own Way. Lives of Our Own
Lorri Hewett Manufacturer: Puffin ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0141305894 |
Book Description
Shawna and Kari have nothing in common--except maybe a brother or sister theyve never known Dessina, Georgia, is culturally a world apart from Denver, Colorado, as Shawna Riley discovers practically on her first day of junior year. The new girl in school, she seems sophisticated and worldly to her classmates--but that doesn't help her make friends. In fact, enemies are easier to come by, including a red-haired girl named Kari Lang. Kari throws a brick through the Rileys' window after Shawna writes an editorial for the newspaper suggesting that a sacrosanct local tradition, the Old South Ball, include kids of all races. But soon something more than this ugly bias incident brings the two girls together, when they accidentally learn a secret from their parents' shared past. Shawna's father and Kari's mother both attended Dessina High School, and both disappeared for a time during their senior year. Could it be that Kari's mom had gotten pregnant? Provocative and suspenseful, this searing look into the personal and emotional implications of an uneasily integrated society once again demonstrates the truth of the axiom that the more things change, the more often they stay the same.Customer Reviews:
