Great for anyone who is thinking about coaching........2007-03-21

I bought this for my wife who has no formal training in coaching or teaching. It is the first book she's read in years. She still carries it around in her car. She made all kinds of plans - coached in two tournaments and even won one of them. Now she's all about coaching. I think she's found a new love. She never would have done this without the book. If you are thinking about coaching, but just don't know what to do, get this book. You might find that it is all you need.

Excellent Girl's Basketball Book.......2007-01-14

I'm a new coach and found this book an easy read, but packed with good tips and drills. Works on basics, and doesn't come across as a boy's book titled differently for girls. I would suggest you read this book a couple of times before the season begins. The book points out the importance of planning your practices, it is right!

This book is great for girl coaches from new to experienced. It is for the coach who wants to learn how to coach basketball the right way. I am a coach and have three daughters and I would hope that any coach that teaches any of my children would have at least a working knowledge of the information in this book. It is an easy read and a good reference book.

The author expertly guides the reader through the entire coaching process. Not only the sport and the basics, but also the the most important parts of coaching youths: planning, preperation and Parents! I am also impressed with the in-depth examination of the differences of coaching girls and boys. I definately recommend this book for new coaches of girls.

This a very good basketball book for new, aspiring or even coaches with 2-3 years experience ... even if, like me, you are just a parent looking for ways to help your daughter take it to the next level.

***Especially good for fathers or male coaches looking for insights into how to be most effective with the young, female player!***

If for nothing else, the chapter highlighting the differences between the youth male and female players made this purchase well worth the price. Now I know how to better "reach" girls in *any* sport -- especially my own.

The other coaching tips and drills were icing on the cake. Let me know if the author ever publishes a sequel!

A must for first time coaches.......2005-11-01

I spent one year as an assistant coach and one year as a head coach for boys high school basketball. After a four year hiatus I am returning to head coaching a freshman team and being an assistant for a varsity team. This book made me realize the little things I missed the first time around. From having a philosophy to in game situations. This is a comprehensive plan that I wish I had the first time around. Instead of going to coaching clinics to tell other coaches what Im doing, Im going with questions for the more experienced coaches on how they handle situations. All aspects of being involved in a program are covered: discipline, dealing with the media, dealing with parents, practice plans,etc.... This book does not miss a beat, a must have.

Well worth reading.......2002-01-10

Morgan Wootten is probably THE most successful high school basketball coach, and his book is one that I believe coaches at all levels can benefit from. I have found that the principles, plays and strategies he has written to be very beneficial in my own development as a coach. Plays and diagrams are simple and complete, and his focus on developing his kids as both individuals and players is great reading. This book is one you will want to take your coaching and your team to "the next level."

The "REAL" Bible for coaching basketball........2000-08-09

This book does much more than just teach the game of basketball, it shows coaches how to prepare their kids to be successful in life. And does an excellent job at both. His experience and record speak for themselves, the man definitely knows the game. But I feel his expertise at the X's and O's is just icing on the cake. I first discovered Mr. Wootten's masterpiece about five years ago while preparing to coach a Y.M.C.A. travel team (my first gig). It was the main source I used to develop my program. I recieved rave reviews from both the parents and the Y.M.C.A. Over the past five years I have endorsed the book in social settings(when the subject arose) but hadn't seen the book since then. In the meantime I've had an increased yearning to coach basketball, which I've gone back to school to accomplish. Today I found out, it was Mr. Wootten's book that caused me to believe I was born to coach.I recently landed an Assistant Coaching job for the Varsity Women's basketball team at the Div.III school I'm attending. Preparing for the upcoming season I deciced "Coaching Basketball Successfully" was the first book I'd reread. Very quickly I realized where my passion to coach came from. The coaching philosophy paper I had to write the previous semester was eerily similar to many of the ideas in Coach Wootten's book. Since the copy I'm reading now is from the library, I intend to buy my own copy and one each for both the Men's and Women's Head Coach here at my school. Coach Wootten's wonderful book optimizes the true meaning of the word COACH..,and sparked a fire in my soul, to be the positive influence and guide that a coach is supposed to be. Exactly what our children deserve.

A decent overall guide.......2006-08-20

After reading this book, it's very obvious that the author is a very good coach. She has achieved tremendous success through (it seems) hard work and sound basketball principles. Her book is well written and easy to understand. I have purchased many basketball coaching books over the last 3 years, and this is as good or better than many I've read.

I'm now a head coach for a high school varsity girls' basketball team, and I bought this particular book (among others) because it was specific to girls' basketball. However, this book offered nothing to set it apart from any other high school (boys') coaching book. I had just read Morgan Wootten's "Coaching Basketball Successfully" and it felt like I was re-reading a good portion of this book. I am definitely disappointed that I didn't read anything new to me or very specific to girls' basketball. The author (I'm sure) has a greater wealth of knowledge and experiences than I do, I just wish this book would have tapped into that a little more. This is a good complete basketball book, but it isn't very enlightening and does nothing to differentiate itself from the hundreds of other high school coaching books out there.

While this book offers a lot of information, it is destined to the same fate of many basketball books: 1) too much information without enough detail on any one system 2) complicated diagrams that have to be studied for hours in order to understand. This book is more of an encyclopedia of basketball. It covers everything. And the history of girls/womens basketball is particularly good. However, the author does not convey a personal philosophy or a personal system that she has used in basketball. It's more like " you can do it this way but you can also do it that way. " I therefore did not find the book useful in further developing my own coaching. There are a lot of details to basketball and the best books and teachings are those in which there is a detailed explanation of what, why and how. But for an overview of the different aspects of the game, the book does an admirable job. If there is one thing that is missing from this book, it is the relationship between coach and player. How does a coach motivate her players? Why is it important not to yell at them? What do you do to bond with your players and therefore enhance the spirit and motivation of the team.

Pretty good overall but too heavy for travelers.......2007-04-12

If you're looking for a book with good background information and history lessons this is the one for you. It is not the book to take to walk around the city with. It is simply too heavy. Your best bet is to just cut out the walking maps to take with you before leaving your hotel room. I liked the little walking tour of the bird market, flower market and fish market in Kowloon. As far as the restaurant recommendations are concerned...don't bother looking at the book. Most of the listings are somewhat expensive by local standard and don't offer the best food. All you have to do to find a good meal is to walk around and go to one that's packed with locals. Restaurants are everywhere and most of them open until the wee hours of the morning. There's no fear of not getting good food in Hong Kong. Go ahead, try something you can't find at home.

Lonely Planet Hong Kong & Macau .......2007-01-05

This book gives ou a nice overview of the region, and incredible specific tips for visiting HK and Macau.

Good overall guidebook..........2006-04-16

I found this book to be extremely helpful in covering all the bases of transport, taxes, tipping, typical business hours, history, background, and a good overview of what's where, and how to get there. Often times, we'd have questions about things like poverty level, health coverage, average income, quality of water -- and found that the guide pretty much answered all of those, and more.

The maps aren't super, and because of the size of the book, it made it difficult to carry. Besides, if you're asking a local for directions, you'd want a bilingual map, as the English names of cities/stations drive them crazy. (ie, Mandarin romanizations in a Cantonese city) I do give it credit for accurately pointing out the numerous obscure markets in Tsim Sha Tsui, as well as the various shops in Hong Kong City. The walking guides were surprisingly useful.

The reason why I give it 4 stars is because HK is all about food and shopping, and the book came up seriously short on the food portion. (no pun intended) Despite it being only 3 months since publication (12th edition, Jan 2006) literally *every* restaurant this book recommended (of which we attempted to find) turned out to be non-existent, had changed ownership and had turned into some other shop. I attribute some of this to bad luck, but I seriously doubt the restaurants didn't *all* go out of business in the last 3 months, but rather that the information on the guide was a little outdated.

The section on food is one part I really relied upon to book to help me out, and was pretty disappointed when it didn't come through for me, as the alternatives to an English guidebook aren't great. The alternatives are to ask the hotel clerk (who will recommend the hotel restaurant), or a random stranger (who will recommend his friend/family's restaurant), or read a weekly magazine about which eateries are good (which require Chinese reading skills).

Despite my frugal 4 stars, this guide is considerably better than most, and is worth the small change to purchase, especially when compared to the amount of money you spent to book your vacation.

Great Guide!.......2005-09-25

This was the first time I bought a travel book from Lonely Planet. I loved it because it provides a historical as well as a modern background on the cities being visited. The recommendations for dinner, site-seeting, etc were great! The only thing I would've added is a rating of the top sites to see if you are only in the city for a short time.

Injustice!.......2005-01-15

This LP guide is a pretty good guide to HK and Macau. Being a foodie, I think their food guide section does not do HK's gastronomical scene justice! Beautiful food galore on the islands and LP can't even manage to cover half of that wonder. Oh well ;) Otherwise, it is quite a comprehensive guide to what's there to see around HK and Macau.

typical travel guide book.......2000-04-26

i found this book to be extremely helpful and easy to read. the "overload" of information didn't bother me. in fact, i liked it! for people who have time to do some serious sight-seeing, this book will not only highlight the major sights; it will also clue you into the lesser-known places worth looking into. and a definite plus to this book is its size. it was small and light enough to be carried everywhere in my sidebag (much to the embarassment of my best friend). the only reason i can't give this book five stars is because of a common flaw (i'm told) found in lonely planet guides: the economic places suggested are TOO cheap!

my advice to fellow hk tourists is to: 1) plan to spend at least two weeks there so you don't miss out and 2) be adventurous, don't just stay in central!

I've just returned from a week in Hong Kong, and, halfway thru my stay, chucked this book in the dustbin. It appears it tried to cover everything, and, in doing so, in effect, covered nothing. I found Fodor's guide to be much superior, in locating what might be of interest to me. Oh, by the way, "do" go to Hong Kong, it was the most eye-opening trip I've made in 35 years. But...leave this book at home!

Sweet but nothing special.......2003-01-05

This book is a very typical formulaic romance. The hero, heroine, and villain are almost cartoonish in their persona. The heroine is your classic self sacrificing beautiful woman. The hero is your basic great guy and the villain is just completely evil. The storyline is sweet but it would probably appeal more to a younger reader who cares less about depth of character. The characters have cartoonish personalities with no real depth. It was a sweet book but nothing special about it.

Romance Down Under.......2000-07-11

Being an avid fan of Cassie Edwards, whenever I see a book of hers that I have not read yet, I'll pick it up. I especially love the Savage Series. Therefore Roses After Rain came as a big surprise. A pleasant one. It was great to see a completely new setting. Ian and Thalia are very likable characters and to me it was great to picture them in surroundings that I could identify with. Thank you Cassie. You must have done a lot of research to come up with such an accurate account of the history of a country which until now, I presume, was unfamiliar territory to you. Keep up the good work.

The Burning Rose is a wonderful read. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book. As a matter of fact, I've read all of Shirley's books and they are all very entertaining. Fast but unforgettable read.......2003-03-31

A friend recommended this to me after she'd read it. Now, normally, if this friend recommends something, I'll hate it. So I went into this prepared to read a few pages out of courtesy and and hope she wouldn't ask me any detailed questions. I was caught like a fish on a hook, though. I went for the futuristic tweaks, just enough to lift the story out of current time and into a near future inhabited by some of the wildest characters you're ever going to run across. You got to wonder how the author could come up with these characters - I mean, there's some vivid dudes and dudettes here, but in the context of the book they all seem to fit. I won't give away too much, but my favorite was Reggie, a tough-guy bodyguard who knows he has faults and doesn't worry much about them. A journalist named Casey is a good mix of idealism, spunk, and arrogance, and she needs all of those characteristics as things heat up in a story she's working on. She gets caught up in a high stakes adventure that's fresh and thought-provoking. The time slipped by while I was reading because the author pulls you into the world she's created, gives you a push at the small of your back, and away you go until the last page. Highly imaginative and entertaining. Take a big breath before you dive into this book, because you won't have time to come up for air.

A fabulous about-face for Shirley Kennett.......2003-03-21

Shirley Kennett is the highly successful author of four intricate murder mystery books featuring computer-savvy P.J. Gray, her young son, and her partner Leo Schultz. The manner of this series is highly intelligent, serious and intricate. This book I have just read, BURNING ROSE, is delightfully different. It is as if Ms. Kennett let her hair down and wrote for the sheer joy of writing. The whole concept is novel, exotic and delivered with extreme style and enthusiasm. The writing is informal, not studied like Dr. P.J. Gray, and contrary to the series which is set mainly in the St. Louis area, BURNING ROSE takes place all over the globe. The ideas expressed are in-your-face and the pace is consistently exciting. If you would like to read a totally innovative eco-thriller, this is the book to get!

Wow! A breathless read.......2003-02-19

This book is quite a departure from the author's PJ Gray series. I picked it up assuming it was a series book, and kept expecting the familiar characters to come onto the scene. While I did miss PJ and Schultz, this book stands alone - and stands out. A journalist pokes her nose into places where it doesn't belong and gets swept up in events of worldwide significance. It's the near future - or is it? The science in this book isn't far-fetched, and could be happening today out there on the leading edge. Talk about exotic characters! There are some in this book that will be giving me the heebie-jeebies for a long time. Most of the characters have a dark side, so that you can't decide whether they are good guys or bad guys right away. An unlikely romance lightens the mood. Imagination rules the day here. You have to grab on and not let go until the last page. The pace is breakneck and the stakes are high. This is an absorbing, very different read. It's like the author just went on a romp, and if you want to keep up, you'll have to turn the pages fast.
