Book Description
Book One of the Rani Adventures begins with Ron Snell's birth as the eldest child of missionary parents living in the rainforests of Peru. Colorfully depicting what it was like growing up in such surroundings, Snell has captured a wide-ranging audience ranging from homeschool children to senior citizens. "I wouldn't trade my childhood for any other," Snell writes. "Conceived in the Amazon rainforest, I learned to walk and talk among the Machiguenga Indians who, to this day, call me "Rani". "The 'Machis' were my first babysitters and friends. From them I learned to tie a house together, eat monkeys and macaws, and make dugout canoes. They laughed at my log rides down rampaging rivers and caught exotic pets for me. Life was one great adventure after another. After all, what could be more fun than perching in thorn trees at night to escape a herd of stampeding pigs? "The Machiguengas adopted me and my family into theirs. As they touched our lives we discovered what it would cost us to touch theirs. "I hope this first book of the Rani Adventures will bring you laugher, tears and a new perspective on the old cliche: 'It's a jungle out there!' " The second edition (5 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches) is larger than the first edition (4 1/4 inches by 7 inches.

Parenting in perspective.......2007-01-20
Our entire family read this outloud and we laughed hard and long. I'm afraid to let my kids cross the street, wait until you read about this family living in the jungle and what they let their kids do! True story. Helped my kids have a sense of what brave is and enabled them, in turn, to take courage! We liked everything in the series that we read.
A good premise, but..........2005-06-01
I have to say, I thought I'd really enjoy this book. It seemed to have a lot of the kind of stories I like, about exotic countries and adventures. The stories themselves were very good, I can't say believable, because they weren't, but they are all true. It is organized roughly chronilogically, but in places it tends to bounce around a little.
I thought his descriptions of life in the book were excellent, and often hilarious. Especially about the car trip, (hark to all kids who have mother's who love to grip handles when the fathers speed)! However, for some reason, I couldn't get into this book. It took me over a month, in between reading about 10 other books, to finish it! Maybe it is because it is divided into about 16 unrelated stories and I tend to like books that flow, rather than short stories. Anyway, it's a good read if you like this sort of thing, and worth a try to anyone!
Excellent.......2004-02-29
As a father of MKs (missionary kids) I raised my children in a setting which was more similar to than different from the Peruvian jungle where Ron Snell grew up. We are back in the United States now, and are having a blast reading It's A Jungle Out There! as a family. The stories may seem outlandish to someone who never lived in a tribal setting, but we can believe it all!
Snell's humour is irresistable, his descriptions vivid enough to leave lasting impressions, and his love of life contagious. All of that makes the book valuable, but woven through the stories are important lessons about life too. I recommend this book highly. It surely would be an important addition to any child's bookshelf (if the child could keep it away from his/her parents!).
The Truth About an MK's life.......2003-07-08
This is a great book. Many people would think that it could not possibly be all true, but it is. I am also a missionary kid (MK) and although I never lived in the jungle, I lived through some of these same adventures. The last chapter is especially true (particuarlly for MKs from the '80s). Parts of it were so true that it was hard to read. But it was a great childhood. Ron Snell speaks out for all of us MKs!
It's a Jungle out there.......2002-04-24
It's a jungle out there
by Chris barber
This is a great story. It's exotic, it's funny, and the pictures help you imagine almost exactly what it was like then. The book virtually explains what it's like to be a kid with missionary parents growing up in the jungles of Peru .You also learn about South American tribes such as the Michiguengas. All written with a sense of humor. One of my favorite parts was, when he observed that "When they are laughing you know you're in trouble."
I highly suggest this book to anyone who likes to laugh and learn about other cultures.

brilliant romance writer on the rise.......2006-05-11
About time!!! Robin T. Popp caught my attention with her first book, TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN (Lovespell 2003). Then nothing! ARGH! The book was highly imaginative, original, with strong characters. Popp had all the ingredients for a super book and she delivered. I kept waiting for more tales from this talented lass. Surely, a writer of this caliber would soon have more. It's been a dry two years, but finally Popp has a new book out from Warner Forever line. OUT OF THE NIGHT once again proves Popp is a writer to watch.
Lanie Webes is a fireman?(firefighter person??? lol) and EMT. This was no delicate miss, but a woman who faced life and death situation as part of her daily routine. When her father, a scientist, dies at his research center deep in the Amazon jungle, she has to travel there to really settle in her mind that he is truly dead. The trek there is not a simple choice. She must hire a private charter plane. And while she dashes into burning building to save people, getting into that dilapidated plane summoned all her fortitude.
Her Uncle Charles arranges for Mac Knight, the pilot of that thing he called a plane, to fly her deep into the Amazon jungle, then drive her to the top secret research centre where her father died under mysterious circumstances. The pilot is a former Navy Seal, and has worked for `Uncle' on missions before. Lanie is floored when she meets the pilot - the man is drop dead gorgeous. By the same token, Mac is little prepared for the quick action lady. When he is attacked and bitten - by a `creature' (won't say more than that to keep from spoiling the fast ride), Lanie's actions are automatic, drawing on her EMT skills to keep him alive. As Lanie fights for his life, her attraction grows for Mac.
The story is mesmerizing, rapid action that keeps you turning page after page. As with her first book, the characters are vivid, the action strong. Just one great vamp read. Highly recommended.
Welcome back, Popp! Don't take so long for your next book, lass!

Book Description
You should worry about your legacy later in your career, at the edge of retirement—right? Not according to Robert Galford and Regina Maruca. In Your Leadership Legacy, these authors argue that thinking about your legacy now makes you a better leader today.
Based on stories of top leaders who have shaped successful careers, the book explores the art of “legacy thinking,” helping you to formulate a legacy that will exert a positive effect on your work immediately. The authors provide a disciplined approach to framing your legacy, as well as shaping it over time. They start with the idea that your legacy is defined by how others approach work and life as a result of having worked with you. They then demonstrate how to assess your current impact on those around you, strengthen that impact, and pass along the best of yourself in the process.
While many leaders “find themselves” and hone their work accordingly only after a major life crisis, Your Leadership Legacy enables all leaders to craft their work and build their legacy unburdened by such crises, and to experience personal satisfaction and achievement throughout their working lives.

Good long-term reference.......2006-12-11
What kind of legacy are you leaving behind? We all think about that from time to time. Your Leadership Legacy is a book that can help you not only think it through but plan for success. This book is primarily focused on your business legacy but the framework can be applied to your family and community legacy as well.
The first step is to acknowledge that you probably haven't given much thought to your legacy but that you want to do so starting now. The authors lead you through the process of drafting your desired legacy statement and how to seek feedback on it. This latter piece is critical and probably one of the hardest things to do; it's like baring your soul, so be sure you pick the right person/people to give you an honest assessment.
The authors list six different types of leadership roles. Thinking of myself and others that I've worked with over the years, I'd say it's pretty hard to shoehorn someone into just one of these roles. That said, most people probably lean more towards one even if they have tendencies towards two or more.
This isn't one of those books you can just read, put on a shelf and forget about. If you're truly serious about creating a lasting legacy you'll need to refer to this book every so often in the years ahead; it's a good way to check in on your progress and make any necessary adjustments.
Since this book is a potential long-term resource, I'd like to see the authors enhance the companion website. They have the opportunity to put tools, checklists and other items up there to serve as a living online resource center for all their readers. More importantly, it would be great if they'd set up space to host legacy framework documents and worksheets for their readers. That way the information would all be in one (online) location, so you wouldn't have to worry about creating a folder or storing it locally; this approach would be very attractive since the whole process is so long-term and things could easily be misplaced or forgotten about.
This book definitely has a lot to offer, but you need to be committed to the long-term process to get the most out of it.
How to shape your career so you leave the right legacy........2006-11-23
This short book offers a core recommendation: think about your legacy long before your retirement. Plan it and begin to create it now. Many executives do not begin to consider their legacies until their working lives are nearly done. This wastes a great opportunity. By thinking ahead and planning for the sort of legacy you would like to leave, you can make it much more probable that the legacy you actually do leave will match your aspirations. Legacies do not happen accidentally. They are the products of years of effort. We recommend this framework for considering your legacy. Authors Robert M. Galford and Regina Fazio Maruca include a structured series of action steps to help you get started on the path of legacy creation, and they provide numerous entertaining and illustrative anecdotes to help point the way. They don't dwell on asking if a manager who is preoccupied with legacy creation is hampered in making risky decisions, and they don't examine the mini-fad in legacy thinking. However, they do clearly tell you how to look forward, act with deliberation, and pick yourself up and start again if one legacy gets destroyed and you must build another.
Aimed at the First Leader as well as at the CEO.......2006-11-02
Thinking about the legacy you're going to leave behind is a lot like the other things we tend to put off such as leaving a will or expressing our ideas about our own funeral.
These latter things are a great help to those left behind. The idea of a working legacy is another matter. Developing and keeping in mind a legacy that you'd like to leave behind at work can well help you in making the day to day decisions. By knowing where you want to go, you can keep your decisions consistent, you can evaluate decisions based on some clear understanding of how that decision will effect the big picture rather than just the decision of the moment.
You would expect a book with this kind of title to be aimed at the CEO level, or perhaps just below. And to an extent it is, but it is also applicable to 'first leaders' who can begin to use these techniques immediately. After all, the real job of the first leader is to develop his/her leadership skills so they can move on to eventually reach the CEO position.
A must-read for new and experienced leader.......2006-10-28
Your Leadership Legacy should be a wake-up call for every leader - new and experienced. Most leaders pay little - if any - attention to the legacy they are building and leaving in the organizations in which they work. This book should cause them to think twice about their legacy.
Presented in an easy-to-read, example-filled, practical format, Your Leadership Legacy will guide you though the critical components of understanding your unintended leadership impact, writing your legacy statement, putting the statement through the acid test, and putting it into action.
This book provides every leader with the knowledge he or she needs to create a positive, enduring legacy - starting immediately. The sooner you read it, the better!
Actively managing the way others will remember you..........2006-10-26
Regardless of what you do as a leader, you *will* leave a legacy behind. Rather than wait until there's not much left you can do about it, Robert M. Galford and Regina Fazio Maruca make the case for managing your legacy now in the book Your Leadership Legacy: Why Looking Toward the Future Will Make You a Better Leader Today.
Contents:
Part 1 - Making Leadership Last: Building a Legacy
Part 2 - Impact and Duration: What Kind of Impact Are You Having?; What Role Are You Playing?; Your Intentional Legacy; Is Your Legacy Designed To Last?; Are You Doing the Right Thing?
Part 3 - Judgment: The Need for Judgment; Legacies and the Responsibilities of Leadership
Notes; Index; About the Authors
In many ways, this is reminiscent of Stephen Covey's "Begin With The End In Mind". You start out thinking about how you would like to be perceived and remembered, and then start taking actions to make that happen. The authors define "legacy" as how others approach work and life as a result of having worked for you. They also advocate for looking at "legacy thinking" early on in your career, so that your goals can shape your day-to-day interactions with those you lead. Through a series of exercises, they walk you through assessing your current influence on those around you, identifying the type of role you play in the organization (as well as how that will affect your legacy), and then what steps you need to put in place to ensure that you are creating the legacy you intended. It's not necessarily a comfortable process, as the odds are that you'll have to acknowledge that there are aspects of your leadership style that may be effective to the organization but devastating to those around you. But ultimately, you'll leave some sort of personal signature on your charges. You might as well make sure it's one you'd *want* to be remembered for.
While written specifically for leaders, it's not hard to extrapolate the principles to your personal life. Think of your role as a leader of your family or of some organization where you volunteer your time and efforts. These areas also affect your legacy, and in many ways it's a legacy that's more personal and important than a corporate one. Even if you choose not to follow through all the exercises put forth here (and I recommend you do), just the thought of actively managing how others will remember you will start to move you down a road that not many travel in time to have much of an impact...
Book Description
The Curse of Cain confronts the inherent ambiguities of biblical stories on many levels and, in the end, offers an alternative, inspiring reading of the Bible that is attentive to visions of plenitude rather than scarcity, and to an ethics based on generosity rather than violence.
"[A] provocative and timely examination of the interrelationship of monotheism and violence. . . . This is a refreshing alternative to criticism-biblical and otherwise-that so often confuses interpretation with closure; it is an invitation to an ethic of possibility, plenitude, and generosity, a welcome antidote to violence, as important for its insights into memory, identity, and place as for its criticism of monotheism's violent legacy."—Booklist
"Brilliant and provocative, this is a work demanding close attention from critics, theologians, and all those interested in the imaginative roots of common life."—Rowan Williams, Bishop of Monmouth
"A stunningly important book."—Walter Brueggemann, Theology Today
"Artfully rendered, endlessly provocative."—Lawrence Weschler, New Yorker

Startling and Moving.......2007-06-26
Almost every page of Regina Schwartz' book on the Hebrew Bible flashes with startling insights. Her most basic (and I think most helpful) overall observation is to note the pervasive issue of scarcity functioning throughout the Old Testament. Land is scarce, blessings are scarce, and this scarcity drives characters into conflict, and conflict leads to concerns over identity and possession (Who's in and who's out? Who gets what?). Hence her chapter headings run like this: "Inventing Identity", "Owning Identity" etc. Schwartz' "scarcity leading to identity formation" key for reading the Hebrew Bible opens a great deal of fresh interpretive space. Get this book, then reread the Old Testament again, as if for the first time.
Doesn't Bother With Context.......2006-09-16
The author like so many others lumped all Christian denominations and seeminingly monotheistic religions together as one. No, not all Christians are the same. Furthermore, the author took many verses in the Bible out of context, rather than choosing to see it as a whole, he instead sees it in pieces, as being contradictory, not bothering to take seriously WHY the Bible made certain statements.
Unjustified Violence, in Search of an Identity, Then and Now.......2006-07-03
"The issue I am focusing attention on is the price of imagining collective identity under one principle and banishing the rest--it doesn't have to be one god, it can be one nation, one kinship group, one territory." Regina Schwartz
Violence and Monotheism:
Monotheism is a deep, complex concept with a multifaceted history, complicit with violence, and the demand of allegiance to one god, is accompanied by aggression against those of other beliefs, is Dr. Schwartz conclusion, based on her study relating violence to Monotheism. Unfortunately, tales of violence may have been exaggerated in the Hebrew narratives to impress, while it receded when Hebrew Monolatery developed into Monotheism. Sometimes peoples that have a monotheistic religion are in fact very pluralistic and tolerant.
Violent Interpretations:
"Biblical narratives are infinitely interpretable, and interpretations of the Bible have been put to any and every political purpose. The number of ante-bellum clergy who used the Bible to justify slavery is astonishing." Regina Schwartz, a promoter of Ethics and Non violence says, adding, "The Bible..., not only as a spiritual guide and a handbook of truth, but also as a manual of politics. As though all this authorizing of scripture doesn't make biblical interpretation hazardous enough,..."
She interprets the Bible as describing peoples who were in conflict, competing for their needs, of material resources, in the ancient world, as they are today. Biblical narratives reflect that violence against peoples who worship other deities, leaving us a legacy of intolerance, and sometimes authorizing such intolerance as God's own command.
Themes and Findings:
The author's scheme is logical, analytical and thematically compelling, briefly; Violence, in search of identity, Covenants to confirm identity, Land to conserve identity, Legislation to guard identity and limit internal conflict, Nationalism to strengthen identity, Memory to preserve identity.
She proposes that the injunction "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" promotes intolerance to other people, and their beliefs. The Bible, debates Dr. Schwartz, has bequeathed not only narratives of violence, but has promoted an ethic of charity and social justice; taking care of the widow, the orphan, and the poor. The Bible also offers alternative visions toward the neighbor, of peace and generosity, of forging alliances with the foreigner, and we could highlight them. The prophets emphasized visions of bounty and peace, of the lion laying down with the lamb, thus, overwriting the violent themes of winners and losers.
The Curse of Cain:
The Curse of Cain invites a fresh analytical re-reading of the Hebrew Bible narratives without prejudice or bias. Dr. Schwartz proposes Cain's violence was the first sin against God and humanity. Her study plan is impressive, and her interpretation of the narrative is both bold and lucid, analyzing the perplexing stories to discover a psychological motive for the unjustified violence, and evaluates its implications.
Great Read.......2003-09-10
This is a truly brilliant book.
Helpful Summary of Monotheistic Violence........2000-04-08
This book is a useful introduction to the idea that Western religious identites are formed through exclusionary violence. As such, it is an important book that could be a great resource for adult education in churches and synagogues. However, Schwartz does not really say anything that hasn't been said before, or rather she doesn't engage with a slew of writers who have made similar associations between identity and violence (Adorno being the most uncompromising example). For a more satisfying look at how the critique of identity looks when applied to biblical criticism, see Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza's _But SHE Said._ Still, Schwartz's accessible prose opens these challenging questions to a wider readership than has previously been attempted.
