    Book Description

Guidelines for Design of Low-Rise Buildings Subjected to Lateral Forces is a concise guide that identifies performance issues, concerns, and research needs associated with low-rise buildings. The book begins with an introduction that discusses special problems with low-rise buildings subjected to wind and earthquakes. Chapter 2 examines probabilistic methods and their use in evaluating risks from natural hazards. It also addresses the characteristics of wind and seismic forces and levels of risk implied by building codes. Wind forces are covered in more detail in Chapter 3, with discussions of wind force concepts and wind-structure interactions. Chapter 4 is devoted to earthquake forces and traces the development of building codes for earthquake resistant design. Chapter 5 describes the main framing systems used to resist lateral forces and discusses the code requirements for drift control. The designs and requirements for connections between building elements are addressed in Chapter 6. It includes examples along with several illustrations of suitable connections. The performance of non-structural elements during wind and earthquake forces is also examined in detail. This book serves as an important reference for civil engineers, construction engineers, architects, and anyone concerned with structural codes and standards. It is an excellent guide that can be used to supplement design recommendations and provide a design basis where there are no current requirements.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars A nice journal.......2006-01-31

I have been using a running journal for several years and this is a very nice one. Is it the ultimate one? That is certainly a matter of taste. If this were the ultimate one, it would be structured to accommodate more than one workout in a day, it would be hardcover, and it would be waterproof. And Amazon would be giving them away free.

The large format is very nice if, like me, you want to have some room to write. The training information in the front of the log is great but I already have that information in other books. Once you've read it then it's just dead weight to haul around. (This is important to me because I do carry my training log around with me most of the time.) It would be nicer if this supplemental material was in another volume that you could leave at home.

If you want a minimalist log (like the one you get for subscribing to Runner's World), then this is not the log for you. If you need room to take careful notes of your training, then you'll appreciate this log.

3 out of 5 stars Not what it says.......2005-01-22

While this training log is a pretty decent one, the "product description" for this item is incorrect. It specifically says that it includes "full color photographs," and it does not. The only "full color photograph" in the log is the cover. I was disappointed upon receiving it.

5 out of 5 stars Flexible, Inspiring, Roomy, and Informative...THE BEST!.......2000-06-01

The Ultimate Runner's Journal is easily the best log book on the market. I've tried several other logs, and none come close to providing the amount of space available to write about my runs every day. That's why I'm very confused by the previous review--the writer states he wants a lot of room to write. That's exactly what The Ultimate Runner's Journal provides, so his criticism is puzzling to say the least. If you don't like pictures (and I don't know too many people who don't like pictures...), then it is very easy to skip them since they are on their own pages. Maybe what he really needs is a lined college notebook!

The Journal is geared toward all levels of runners--the pace charts go from 5 minutes per mile to 15 minutes per mile. Even brisk walkers could use the pace charts! I also love the quote that starts off each week on the right foot. They are well-chosen to provide inspiration one week, a good laugh another, and offer contemplation yet another week. I thought the articles were excellent as well, particularly the training article by Jack Daniels that is based on his book, Daniels' Running Formula. He tells you exactly how to train from middle distance to the marathon. Very useful. In sum, The Ultimate Runner's Journal easily rates as the best log book available today for runners of every ability--whether you like to write a lot or a little, read some or not at all, and gaze at great pictures, or thumb past them. With this book you have that flexibility, while with others, you don't. The Ultimate Runner's Journal is simply THE BEST!

    2 out of 5 stars Too picturesque...large..........2000-05-09

While I can understand the appeal some runners have towards this running log, I personally found it too picturesque with a lot of fluffy details. It is too loaded with other stuff that I think shouldn't be in a log book like all those pictures and quotes. Of course, I guess different people think differently in terms of what makes a good log book. For me, a good logbook is one that is minimalist on the pictures (none the better) and quotes and mainly with space to write down the interval training, long distance runs, pace, heart rate etc. that are essential in a log book.

And the other thing about this book is that it's format is too huge. Half the size would be good.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Log.......2000-04-09

This is the most versatile and comprehnsive training log on the market. I've used many over the past 25 years and none offered the flexibility to adequately record the variety of information this log allows, heart rate data, routes, cross training, weather, emotions etc. A beautifully orgainized and easy to use, this log takes the grand prize with no others challeging for its place at the top. Wonderful advice is provided by true experts in the field of exercise physiology and training along with easy to use planning charts. This log does more than just record, it allows for review, planning and preparation. Way to go Richard and Dennis, this is a long needed item for every endurance athletes bag.

      Book Description

Garbo and Crawford. Ava, Hedy, Judy, Liz epitomized Hollywood's golden era. With a trembling lip or sultry eye, with a tear or song or husky whisper, these women held moviegoers across America in their sway from the hard times of the 1930s through the booming postwar years to the early sixties. They were royalty and box office, and led pampered public lives-furs, jewels, designer gowns; limousines, flash bulbs, handsome escorts-that captured the national imagination. They also signed seven-year contracts with a morals clause, and the more they slipped, the more the secret abortions, efficient cover-ups, legal legerdemain, and dropped charges bound them to the wizard in their Oz, Louis B. Mayer. The slips are here along with the successes. Here, too, are the Blonde Bombshell Jean Harlow, Million-Dollar Mermaid Esther Williams, Sweater Girl Lana Turner, and bad girl Ava Gardner ("She can't act. She can't talk. She's terrific," declared Mayer after her screen test). From Jeanette MacDonald and Norma Shearer to Princess Grace and Dame Elizabeth Taylor, the sixteen portraits in this lively, photograph-filled volume, each accompanied by the star's filmography, tell the tales that have long lay hidden behind the gossip and the glories of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's glamorous golden girls.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars pure speculation.......2007-06-09

i have read the book and i keep wondering if any of this really true. it is just pure specualtion. idle gossip. but it was fun reading it. why was so much attention given to grace kelly when she only made a couple pictures with MGM. katharine hepburn was a much bigger star and the author gave her a couple of pages. just not enough.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worthy for the Collector.......2007-01-13

Miss Wayne clearly did not investigate the rumors that fills this book. Many of her facts are not validated and that many more are known to be just rumor. The typographical errors abound, i.e. Wiltshire Boulevard in Los Angeles - it is Wilshire Boulevard. Her dates are deplorable - i.e. Esther Williams and Fernando Lamas were married for 22 years from 1969 until his death in 1982 - that's 13 years, Miss Wayne!

As an avid collector of classic movies and the literature of the Golden Age of Hollywood, this book has no value to this or any other collector!

3 out of 5 stars this is not what it purports to be.......2005-10-25

Jane Ellen Wayne's book "The Golden Girls of M-G-M" will not be everyone's cup of tea. The author seems to take serious advantage of the fact that most of these women are no longer around to protect their reputations, and thus this book is full of vulgar details more at home in the National Enquirer than a deceptively-stylish biography tribute book (which this purports to be). Though to be fair, Ms Wayne is somewhat sympathetic to each of the ladies she features here, but the book is riddled with typographical errors, misspelled names and wrong information. This book will probably never help Miss Wayne ascend the upper-echelon of biographers.

Covering as much dirt as possible, each actress gets a chapter (Jeanette MacDonald, Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor). There is also a `Naughty-But-Nice' section in the back, comprising of mini-chapters devoted to Hedy Lamarr, Katharine Hepburn, Esther Williams, Debbie Reynolds and June Allyson.

There are so many wonderful biographies available on these ladies, but I'm afraid this isn't one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Dragged Through the Mud? Some jumped in on their own!.......2005-08-06

While we all know that these celebrity histories relate many falacies, some shocking tid-bits are true. For instance, it has been well known that Mickey Rooney, as baby-faced and non-sexual as he may seem, was quite the ladies' man. As a 16 year old he had an affair with a much older Norma Shearer (quickly broken up by Louis B. Mayer to avoid scandal). As for Hedy Lamarr, read about the admitted bi-sexuality and orgies in her own words... "Ecstacy and Me," her autobiography, does not hide that she acutally is an arrogant nymphomaniac, and she seems to be rather quite proud of it! We all agree that there are false rumors that are attributed to these actors and actresses, but let's not forget that a lot of them brought sensationalism and scandal on their own. That is what makes their stories so fascinating, and that is why we read them.

5 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Book From Jane Ellen Wayne.......2005-07-10

I always have a great time reading Jane Ellen Wayne's books. Once I started reading this one I could not put it down. Every chapter is filled with terrific stories about Hollywood's greatest actresses. You will learn all about Jeanette MacDonald's love affair with Nelson Eddy and Norma Shearer's marriage to Irving Thalberg. None of the ladies are portrayed as saints but if you can handle the truth you won't be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous & exciting.......2006-09-10

This book is gorgeously illustrated, and the text matches the pictures wonderfully. This would be a charming story for anyone who has ever loved the circus or wanted to run away and be a clown. However, one big question: why doesn't Alice go to school? It makes it look like there are much more fun lives out there than the reader's. Alice looks 6 or 7 years old, and even a circus girl needs an education.

Of course, young children will not notice this little omission, adults can imagine that she is homeschooled, and it's sweet that her daddy reads to her. Who wouldn't love a clown dad, a tightrope walking mom (though probably a lot of non-circus moms feel like that all the time!), a ringmaster granddaddy, and a batch of uncles called The Flying Gazpacho Brothers?

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illustrations.......2004-03-04

The illustrations for this book are absolutely gorgeous. They engaged my Kindergarten students. For the first time, they have truly discussed that the pictures showed what the words were saying - This really hit home for this concept. We had a great discussion about the circus and how the circus 'works'. Story is just as amazing as the illustrations. Our favorite illustration is the father reading to Alice...so sweet.

A must-read for anyone reading about the circus!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful for younger children........1999-07-16

My daughters (6&2) really enjoyed this book. My oldest loved the easy to read words. It made her feel like a "big girl". My 2 year old loved the bright bold pictures on each page. The story was short and cute. A wonderful bedtime story.

I read Garland for Girls last summer for the first time, once again enjoying another one of LMA's books! Each chapter is a different story, filled with good old-fashioned piety and lovely story lines so absent from modern books for girls. As a young adult, as well as a teacher and mentor of young girls, I highly recommend LMA's Garland for Girls.

As a teacher of English, I'm familiar with the way college age students write. Al DiOrio created this tribute to Judy when he was exactly that age. It's warm-hearted, uncritical and -- from what I've read in any number of works on Judy since her death -- a little book that she definitely would have loved. It would be interesting to know what the author is doing now, almost 30 years after this title was published.

        Book Description

The author provides an interdisciplinary cultural study of the evolution of Progressive-era girls' peer groups, their representation in popular girls' fiction, and the influence of these communities, both real and fictional, upon young women's lives during the years leading up to the Second World War. The writers featured in this volume were the first generation of "New Women," whose ability to enter traditionally male spaces such as the college campus, the playing field, the wilderness, and the office was facilitated by their membership in women's clubs, political and religious organizations, and athletic teams. Eager to promote the idea that same-sex group activities would lead to female empowerment, these clubwomen targeted young girls as their intended audience and developed an idealized fictional portrait of female cooperation that girls could replicate in their own lives. By adding to our knowledge of girls' cultural history, the author gives voice to a segment of the population that was, and still is, at the center of society's debates concerning the appropriate roles for girls and women. Authors discussed include Louisa May Alcott, Emma Dunham Kelley, Laura Lee Hope (psuedonym for Lilian Garis), Carolyn Keene (pseudonym for Mildred Wirt Benson), and Margaret Sutton.

Gwen Athene Tarbox's study clearly shows how late-nineteenth-century feminist ideas were reflected in books for girls. Many girls (including myself) felt empowered by serials like the Nancy Drew books. They deserve to be studied and not dismissed as "kiddie literature."

            Book Description

This book studies the representations of working-class women in canonical and popular American fiction between 1820 and 1870. These representations have been invisible in nineteenth century American literary and cultural studies due to the general view that antebellum writers did not engage with their society's economic and social relaities. Against this view and to highlight the cultural importance of working-class women, this study argues that, in responding to industrialization, middle class writers such as Melville, Hawthorne, Fern, Davies, and Phelps used the figures of the factory worker and the seamstress to express their anxieties about unstable gender and class identitites. These fictional representations were influenced by, and contributed to, an important but understudied cultural debate about wage labor, working women, and class.
