Book Description
From the Lead Climbing Ranger for Mount Rainier National Park-all the information you need to get to the summit and back, safely.
*41 principal routes and their variations, with aerial photos and route overlays *Extensive material on Rainier's unique weather, terrain, high altitude and glacier training opportunities, and more *New sidebars on mountain history, Rainier personalities, and dramatic rescues
One of Mike Gauthier's primary duties as Lead Climbing Ranger for Mount Rainier National Park is advising climbing parties about what to expect on the mountain. Name any route on Rainier, and he can describe its rewards and specific challenges (he's summited Rainier more than 170 times during all seasons and under intense conditions). Whether you choose the classic Liberty Ridge route, the drama of Success Cleaver, or the rarely attempted Mowich Face, Gauthier provides all the details you'll need for a successful and enjoyable climb.
This new edition presents the latest information on logistics, regulations, and permits. It includes expanded material on understanding and surmounting Rainier's famed glaciers; tips on selecting a guide service; excellent mountaineering training sites around Rainier for those bound for the world's highest peaks; and bonus routes on adjacent Little Tahoma, Washington's third highest peak.

Awesome read.......2007-05-07
This book covers everything from routes (with maps, elevation gain, difficulty) to permit regulations, information on guide services and common mountain practices/courtesy. Definitely recommended, a quick read.
Excellent review of Mt. Rainier climbing.......2007-01-24
Read the reviews, perused the book and decided to buy 3, one for each of our cabins at Mt. Rainier. We get a lot of climbers, scramblers and hikers to our cabins near Ashford and they love the armchair reading.
Informative and entertaining even for non-climbers.......2005-08-28
I'm not much of a mountain climber at all...Mount Rainier is one of the very few mountains I've ever stepped foot on. Mike's book was still highly entertaining to read for stories or general infactuation with climbing.
I'd sit on a high ridge somewhere in the park ([First] Borroughs Mountain and Plummer/Pinnacle Peaks are great places for that...) and just compare the pictures with the mountain...the routes are clearly marked and explained including all access trails and possible dangers. It's got a lot of personal and relative stories that, once more, amuse more than climbers alone.
The new edition also covers glaciers by Paul Kennard, the regional fluvial geomorphologist of that area. More medical advice and guide advice too--it covers a good range of Mount Rainier necessary information. It's one of the most (if not the top) personal books on climbing Rainier I've found.
Good Book!.......2003-02-22
I summitted Mt. Rainier in July, 2002, and bought this book beforehand. Pretty good book if you're looking to climb multiple routes on Rainier. Very imformative, and very well written. If you're heading out there to climb this beast, I'd definately recommend this book.
Best Rainier Climbing Guide.......2001-10-04
There are other guides to Mount Rainier, but Gauthier's has the most accurate and recent information on the mountain.
If you only want to buy one guide, this on is it.
Book Description
This guidebook, written for experienced mountain climbers, offers detailed information on nearly fifty routes to the summit of Washington state's Mount Rainier, a training ground for Everest climbers and one of the most popular mountaineering destinations in North America. Also included are numerous route photos, maps, permit information, safety considerations, geologic and human history, etc., plus 75 photos showing climbers progressing toward the summit.
The authors are the legendary Fred Beckey, who has more first ascents than perhaps any other climber in North America, and Alex Van Steen, a guide on Mount Rainier.
Customer Reviews:
Not too exciting.......2000-09-26
The book had little juicy content of what it is like to climb Rainier. If you've already climbed it and are looking for more challenging routes, that this is your book. If you are a first time climber, this book will probably fall short of your expectations.
Some new photos with old information.......2000-08-02
This Rainier guide presents much of the same information found in the original "Cascade Alpine Guide" (almost verbatum). It has a number of new and interesting photos, however, the route descriptions are short on details and the layout is a bit disorganized.
This is a good guidebook for those who already know a lot about climbing Mount Rainier.
Beckey and Van Steen hit the nail on the head!.......2000-04-06
I've climbed Rainier 35 times via 18 routes and this book hits the nail on the head! For years I was happy enough that there were no guides exclusively for Mt. Rainier - I felt as if the Mountain were mine - but then I know that's a common feeling shared by many because of our love for the Mountain. I was skeptical when this guidebook was released - but, whoa! - its definately on track. The descriptions are clear and accurate, and the photos do a great job of sharing the "feel" of the routes. The overlays are exceptional, large enough to be really useful and readable. I took a look at desriptions of some of the more popular routes (I've climbed the Emmons Galcier, Kautz, Disappointment Cleaver, Gibraltar Ledges and Liberty Ridge routes several times each) and they are dead on accurate. It was great to see good descriptions of some of the more uncommon routes also like Kautz Cleaver, Kautz Headwall and Edmunds Headwall. Even with this "advertising," I don't think these routes will become "overcrowded" any time soon. The book, overall, left me with a very positive feeling, and I'm anxious to try more routes. The book is a welcome edition to my library, and an excellent resource for climbers who want to explore the Mountain!
For those who plan on climbing.......2000-04-05
An outstanding work. Thorough. Carefully, Clearly, Consisely written and illustrated to present the climber the best information on the mountain. The authors are without peer in climbling knowledge and skills and present their Rainier experience well. The clear aerial photos and clearly marked routes on the photos inspired my efforts to train harder for my climb. I recently climbed Rainier, my first visit to the mountain, and this guide kept me right on route, even in winter. Thanks Amazon, and Beckey and Van Steen too!
Come on now Fred, you can do better........2000-02-24
If you want a big name draw, and lots of old pictures meant to impress rather than inform, than this is your book. This book seemed like it was rushed and not at all put together as well as others I have seen. Although Beckey is undoubtably a climbing guru around these parts, I have never associated his name with Rainier. As for the other author, I am sure he is quite qualified at writing a guide for the one route he "sheepherds" clients up in the summer, but heck I could regurgitate route descriptions from other books also. After reading this book I was left wondering whether or not somebody's savings account was rapidly dwindling and needed immediate damage control. This book will get you by, but when lives are on the line I want the best, and this folks ain't it.

Book Description
One of the most challenging and fascinating outdoor sports, mountaineering pits human ingenuity and endurance against the rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and thin air of the world's highest places. Already a popular sport among women, with some 3.4 million U.S. female participants in the 1996 ORCA survey, mountaineering has been given a tremendous boost by books like Krakauer's Into Thin Air and this edition of Herzog's Annapurna. Veteran outdoorswoman and climber Andrea Gabbard has written the first how-to book about mountaineering written especially for women. Against the backdrop of her own recent ascent of Washington's Mt. Rainier, the books examines the lure of climbing, buying and using equipment, fitness requirements, training, the use of mountain guides, techniques for climbing in ice and snow, safety, decisionmaking, the importance of teamwork--the whole fabric of the alpinist's art and craft. Drawing upon the voices of other women climbers of all levels of experience, Gabbard's book is both a no-nonsense how-to guide and an inspiration to beginning mountaineers.
Customer Reviews:
Did not meet my expectations.......2003-12-28
There are many other, more complete books in the market, although not specific to women, that provide better information. There are many inacurracies and assumtions in this book about men and women that I found offensive, even as a female climber. This appears to be more a book about feminism than climbing itself. And the only topic (how to deal with menstruation) that I was really interested in knowing about, which is woman specific and that is not found in other books was not present in this book either. If a woman is really interested in learning about climbing techniques and does not want to read sexist comments and ideas, there are many other, better books in the market.
An excellent "how to" book for women in mountaineering........1999-01-13
This book is well written, concise, and informative. It deals with most aspects of mountaineering that could be of interest to both men and women. However, Ms. Gabbard also addresses the special issues and problems with equipment, clothing etc. that confront women in this sport. The book has alot of good advice and tips. The photos and drawings are superb. Being a woman in hiking and mountaineering, I learned alot from this book. I especially enjoyed the tale of the two women who were attempting to climb Mt. Rainier. It is exciting to see if they make it or not. I would recommend it to all women, novice or expert, who are interested in the sport of moutaineering. We need more books like this to help and inspire women to attempt to do things they may not think they can do!

Complete guide to hiking, climbing and skiing in Mt. Rainier National Park including summit routes.
Customer Reviews:
Too little information, too many errors.......1999-09-29
I initially picked up this book to supplement our aging copy of "50 Hikes in Mount Rainier National Park". Accustomed to the detailed descriptions in "50 Hikes...", I found the hiking coverage was disappointingly thin. Of course, this is not surprising considering that the author tried to cram a driving, bicycling, hiking, climbing, AND skiing guide into only 172 pages. More unsettling were the errors I found. The mileages for a number of the hikes were at variance with the distances posted and published by the Park (and verified with my own feet!), sometimes by several miles. It makes me wonder what sort of errors may have crept into the climbing section, where mistakes can have far more serious consequences than tired feet.
The book does contain a bibilography, but no index (which is generally quite useful in a book filled with geographical place names). Interestingly, "50 Hikes..." is listed, but it's the 1975 copy. That's even older than mine!
Also, in my copy the second page of the Preface and the entire Appendix were missing.
If you want a good hiking guide to Mt. Rainier, try the current copy (4th ed.) of "50 Hikes in Mount Rainier National Park" by Spring and Manning.
very imformitive and very useful. top notch!.......1999-05-15
in the case of climbing you explain your self so it"S easy to understand. you can jump right in and do what you like to do best, experience mother nature at her best! tell me how does it make you fell*
Book Description
This comprehensive, lightweight(Weighs less than one ounce) climbing guide is designed to be carried with you on your summit attempts. The Stanley Maps' Mt. Rainier Climbing Guide gives a complete view of two of Mt. Rainier's best known climbing routes. Route descriptions are accurate and concise. There is no more piecing together USGS East and West Quadrangles. Each route is clearly shown with 40-foot contours (1:24,000 scale) on a single waterproof and nearly-indestructible sheet that you can fold down and carry in your pocket. The guide is coupled with a total of eight strategic, color aerial photographs to give you a quick and clear understanding of your position. GPS grids are included, so that you can easily set way points. An equipment and clothing checklist helps you to assemble the right gear. The section titled "Climbing Essentials and Tips" provides important information on training, emergencies, first aid, dehydration, acute mountain sickness (altitude), sun exposure, weather, avalanche awareness, no trace climbing, and more.
If you are planning a summit attempt, the new conventional wisdom is "Don't leave home without one." Seattle Mountain Rescue keeps a set of the guides in their rescue truck. The high quality of the guides makes them a great, long-lasting memento of previous adventures on the Mountain.
Mt. Rainier Climbing Guide SM10097 profiles: -- The Ingraham Glacier-Disappointment Cleaver Route, plus two variations -- The Fuhrer Finger Route -- The Kautz Glacier Route
The dimensions of the guides are 12-inches high by 32-inches wide, printed on both sides in a four-color process on lightweight, recyclable plastic material that will not crack or tear with normal usage. They fold down to 4-inches by 6-inches (or if necessary to 4-inches by 3-inches).
Customer Reviews:
Superfluous information.......2004-03-01
I was disappointed in this guide. Though it profiles the three routes to the summit of Rainier and contains some nice color photos plus excellent maps, all of this you can get with a click of your mouse on the Internet. I was crushingly disappointed when this book arrived. It is intended to tote along with you on a Rainier ascent, that is obvious because of the books lightweight nature and the fact it folds into a small area. But the vast majority of mountaineers now use licensed guides, thus the book is irrelevant.
This book has no meaningful information.......2000-11-16
The information in this pamphlet is easily accessible on the internet. I bought this pamphlet thinking that I would get some new info or even a simple topo that I liked-------I didnt.
Do not buy this book----it is a waste of money.
Better than a plain old topo - a new essential.......1999-12-21
As the editorials above correctly state, the two Rainier guides available from Stanley are good enough for guides, rescuers, and climbers alike. The sections on High Altitude Sickness and the checklists are somewhat helpful, although if you don't know the stuff already, you shouldn't be climbing the mountain.
Don't get fooled into thinking that this guide will teach you what is necessary to become a good mountaineer, it's only there as a resource for those who have some mountaineering experience.
What sets these guides apart from standard guides are the photos of the routes. Combine that with the "portability factor" and you've got yourself a winner. While a little imagination can go a long ways with an ordinary topo, this takes some of the guess-work out of it and allows you to navigate by sight when the visibility is decent. Take it in your pack and peruse it in your tent at base-camp - I guarantee that you won't regret it.
Definitely Worth Putting in Your Pack!!!.......1999-07-18
What's nice about this map of several popular climbing routes, (including the Muir/Disappointment Cleaver Route), is that the route is superimposed onto photographs of the mountain, with variations. Our climbing team really appreciated it, and it's durable. After the climb, I put it on my office wall...yow!

no longer relevant.......2000-04-26
Goodness knows why you would ever want to purchase this travel guide, now that it's several years out of date and probably extremely tough to get a hold of. If, however, you do buy this guide, you should be aware that the country has simmered down greatly since it was written and researched. While there is still some banditry, by and large the country is a pleasant and tame area in which to travel. This guide, however, will forever be a period piece of Cambodia's tragic years.

Update needed badly.......1999-12-30
I spent a few weeks this summer in Cambodia and relied heavily on this book. While this may be the definitive Cambodian guidebook, it is dangerously outdated. So much has changed in Cambodia since the second edition was published in November 1996. Much of the basic information and maps are helpful but I would not rely on any of the places to stay reviews, prices, or schedules. The Cambodia section of the Lonely Planet SE Asia on a Shoestring has a more recent review and was much more helpful. Hopefully an update is in the works.
This book helped me get the most out of my trip........1998-12-23
I used the first edition. It had so much important and interesting information. I wore its maps out, the finest maps available. There was no other source for the information. People living there didn't know what bank could get wire transfers. I left the book with NGOs in country for their use as a valuable resource. If you are contemplating any independant exploration your biggest help will be this book. How did they get so much information. They must have gone everywhere and did everything. Small country, small book I'ld have missed much without. WOW!!

Something wicked's in those woods.......2001-04-12
I like the book because of the adventures they take in woods. When they find the wicked thing in the woods. Also the part when they get lost in the woods when hiking after the wicked thing the saw in the woods.I love to read an adventure book over the weekend.
The best part was when they get lost in the woods with the wicked thing.Ireally didn't understand the wicked thing that was in there. The worst part is you stoped at a good part when they get ready to reveal the wiked thing.I think you should of end the book with the revealence.
The two element that vivided me were the setting an the resolution. The setting were there a the boys house an the chose to go into the woods. And when they get into the woods and get lost. The resolution I think is always bring something to mark the way out.I really enjoyed reading this book.
Dare to read a chiller of a book!.......2000-09-05
