Book Description
From the Forest to the Sea: The Ecology of Wood in Streams, Rivers, Estuaries and Oceans is a fascinating new scientific work that discusses the role wood plays in very complex and diverse aquatic ecosystems. Until now almost nothing has been published on this little understood topic. 1. Wood in streams and rivers is a source of food energy for invertebrate organisms; habitat for vertebrate organisms, such as fish; and a structural component that shapes, diversifies, and stabilizes channels while helping to dissipate the water's energy before it can scour channels.2. Wood in estuaries is a major source of food and habitat for obligatory, wood boring, marine invertebrates that in their feeding , break it down and pass usable carbon into the water's current where it enters the detrital based marine food web.3. Wood along the coastline stabilizes sand spits, beaches, and dune complexes, as well as battering rocky shores where it creates new habitats for intertidal organisms and provides small splinters of wood to the coastal food chain.4. Driftwood floating in the open ocean attracts a variety of marine invertebrates and fishes, forming a floating surface community that help organisms colonize new areas. Large fishes, such as tuna, not only feed on smaller fishes attracted to the wood but also drift with it because its movement is controlled by wind and current; thus tuna find the best feeding areas-current interfaces rich in food species. 5. A common textbook perception on marine biology is that, while communities of bacteria can use sulfur compounds as energy and animals can and do live around deep-sea hydrothermal vents through which hot water issues in the ocean's floor, the rest of the oceans bottom is almost devoid of life. But as driftwood becomes waterlogged and sinks, it represents terrestrially-fixed carbon in the energy poor deep-sea where at least three species of wood-borers convert it into a readily available source of detritus that in turn supports the development of complex communities of bottom-dwelling organisms.6. The loss of wood to aquatic ecosystems means destabilization of streams, estuaries, dunes and beaches as well as food chains in the oceans of the world. Sooner or later it may mean the loss of jobs and unique cultural ways of life such as the commercial fishing of certain species.
Book Description
After teaching hundreds of thousands of golfers in the Golf Digest Instructional Schools they helped to organize, Bob Toski and Davis Love, Jr. perfected a revolutionary way of bringing instinct back to the golf swing. In easy-to follow drills and exercises,
How To Feel a Real Golf Swing shows golfers of all abilities how to isolate the different parts of the swing. Each step is designed so that the golfer internalizes the feeling of each part of the swing and can finally put it all together for better results.
How To Feel a Real Golf Swing is the perfect way for golfers to learn on their own time and at their own pace to develop a solid and dependable golf swing: the basis of any good golf game.
From the Hardcover edition.

Tips from a master.......2007-10-14
Bob Toski is one of the best instructors of the golf swing. We are all different sizes, different ages and different skill levels but this one will get you on track.
Bob Toski simplies the golf swing to a game of feel.
A must read for all skill levels
Don't full me..........2007-06-13
I read it more one time and I feel that it's incomplete to learn the swing. Perhaps it's a book to read with a professional.
Simply the Best.......2004-12-29
I'm a single digit handicap golfer who loves to study the golf swing. Of all of the books out there, this one is simply the best. Learning to "feel" your way to a proficient golf swing is right on the mark because if you can feel your swing, you can trust it and play with confidence. The whole body is involved with swinging the golf club, but the hands, arms and feet are the gateway for moving beyond analysis and finally feeling your own swing. Toski and Love communicate the fundamentals in such a straight-forward, easy to understand format that you may just sell or junk all of your other golf books.

Disappointing.......2003-09-08
I did not like this book. It does not explain the golf swing sufficiently for the user to perform the swing correctly. There are certain aspects that I believe leave the reader unclear. For example, the book says that you need to imagine the inside path to the ball in the downswing as a slide going down to the ball. It does not say how the reader should actually perform this move.
I found there is very little in this book that I found to help my game. There are defiantly many fundamentals of the golf swing that this book doesn't even start to discuss. I also don't like the way that the book recommends that you learn how the hands/arms use before learning how the entire body should be used. The book even says that you can swing well without even reading the body/hips section. IMO this will turn the reader into a very "handsy" type of player. It is my belief that the swing is a blend of the entire body and advocating that it is possible to learn how the hands move without even addressing the hips and body is wrong.
There are better books around such as the LAWS of Golf, and Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf.
Great Golf Instructional Book!.......2003-02-06
A great golf instructional book! I think it would be especially helpful to the beginner. The book was written in a very logical sequence and in the order of importance to help reader understand the entire golf swing. Drills in each chapter were simple to perform and effective.

Book good. Some info outdated.......1999-02-21
Worst place I ever went to was Heaven Lodge in Chimanimana. Abysmal experience - how on earth can you recoment it. fantastically impressed with the bushwalking company. Give them a plug, they deserve it. Chimanimani Bushwalking Co. The only reason to go there
You Just Can't Get Lost With This One..........1998-11-10
Swaney's guide to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is the best on the bookstore shelf. The level of detail is superb, from major cities to rural villages. She should consider herself more a regional geographer, as her detail concerning things like history, climate, people, and place are akin to that of one! All this and she manages to fit in the best deals on lodging, food, and travel sites, not to mention important info concerning safety and hazards associated with travel. I used this book extensively during my travels throughout last year, when I lived in Windhoek. Indeed, you can find no better than this- and the information is as good or better than what the locals give! I once had the opportunity to meet her at a hostel in Windhoek, when I was doing some academic research there, and never had the chance to tell her how much I praise this guide!

Absolute must have for visitors to Southern Africa.......1999-10-22
The book was our bible during our summer '99 holiday to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Without it we wouldn't have made it in the timeframe we had for sure. Be sure to buy the most recent version, 'cause these regions are developing faster than you can imagine. Due to the guide we discovered loads more country beauties than we would have. You'll absolutely get your money's worth.

Unusual Adventure Story.......2005-07-14
I nearly didn't read this book because I thought it was a romance and didn't feel in the mood for that particular genre.
Despite my intentions of passing it on to a friend, I opened it up and decided to just read a few pages -- I'm SO glad I did! Once I started reading, I couldn't stop.
I won't try to rehash the plot as other reviews have covered it nicely, but I will add my thoughts as it's an amazingly realistic and engaging read full of adventure with extraordinary writing that pulls you in where you find yourself holding your breath, at turns horrified or astonished. I found myself pulled into another world, and I highly recommend this book.
Don't make my initial mistake of dismissing it lightly -- this is literature to be read and savored.
extremely vivid.......2004-05-14
This book is one that will consume you. It is a haunting tale, amazingly well researched, and with a very uncommon story line. Follow the wealth of characters and their almost dickensian development, each more vivid than the last. Fanny, although the central character, is merely the path to carry the reader through one experience to the next. This book has many dark angles ,often inherent with this level of tangibility. The contrast to your more typical novel only amplifies the life that literally courses through this book. It is well worth the time. But be warned ,it sticks with you, for better or for worse.
THIS BOOK WILL KEEP YOU UP LATE INTO THE NIGHT!!.......2004-01-21
Bride starts the saga of the Christopher family which Mr. McCarry has written about in his other novels. If you like a book about adventure, family and love, this book is the book for you!! It takes you back in time and deposits you there where the sheer beauty and explosiveness of Mr. McCarry's writting will keep you for many hours!! You will miss these characters when the book is over and if you are like me, that is how you measure how good a book is!! Read this book, you will not be let down!!
If I Had To Choose One Book. . ........2001-05-28
. . . to take to a desert island, this would be the one. Bride starts the saga of the Christopher family and if you like adventure, espionage AND a story of faithful love rewarded, this book will surprise and please you on every page. You will be stunned by the sheer beauty and power of the writing and when you turn the last page, you will wish there was that much more.
a wonderful book.......2001-05-17
McCarry was able to bring actual events of late 17th century English and American history to vivid life and his research into the time period is thorough. For example, I believe that he used actual events like the cold and snowy February 1690 night attack by French and Indians on present day Schenectady and the extraordinary escape of Mrs Hannah Dustin from her Abenaki captors, for the fictional attack on Alamoth and the manner of Rose Barebones escape from the Abenakis. His dreamy writing style lends itself to the way Fanny, his main character, sleep-walks through life, as if she and the virgin forests of America are waiting to be awoken to reality. This book is something which one seldom sees on the shelves of bookstores these days: it is exciting, thrilling, romantic in the grand manner of true romance (the worth of true patient love), as well as giving the average reader a taste of what life in America once was, a land filled with enormous trees, wild strawberries so abundant that walking through them was like walking through strawberry preserves, filled with danger and Indians who lived by a code of morals that only the French tried to understand. I highly recommend this book!
Customer Reviews:
avid reader.......2006-07-23
I have read 4-in-1 books before and have enjoyed them. This book however was poorly written. The story plots were interesting yet each story was too short. There was no substance in the stories. The characters meet once or twice and find themselves in love right away and soon marry. This book should have been split into one or two books with a more in-depth history into the characters. If interested in 4-in-1 books I recommend "Castles" by Tracie Peterson or "Bride for a Bit."
Customer Reviews:
MOST REALISTIC LIFESTYLE OF THE 1700's.......2006-07-29
My major complaint is the unrealistic characters on the cover.
Yup! Celene Bernard, masquarading as a boy, was not going to let a man bully a woman, even an Indian woman, without trying to help.
Burke Cardwell has lived among the Chippewa Indians for the past 11 years with his traps and lovely Indian wife, Morning Song. Now he is a widower and suddenly decides he needs a disreputible woman to present as his wife when he returns to England. This will be the start of his revenge for being kidnapped and sent among the trappers.
Celene appears to be that woman, she is fiesty, uncultured and opinionated. Ah, but Celene has had enough of brutish men and their dominations. Never will she willingly surrender to a man's authority again.
Burke soon discovers a beauty in this silver haired, green eyed French woman that tugs at his protective instincts.
Of course, her abduction by the enemies of her father, Antoine Peugeot sets Burke on a trail of danger. Celene will have to petition her half-brother, Darkening Sky to help save Burke's life. And he still almost loses it because of Autumn Leaf's obsession with Cardwell. Oh, the troubles they live through! And she doesn't like the river.
Well the marriage finally happens and then Bayard Forrester shows up and throws everyone in a turmoil as he identifies the Eighth Earl of Hammondsford, Frederick Andrew Burke Hammond-Cardwell. WoW, is there trouble in the henhouse.
Read this great story of how Burke finally understands and gives up his idea of revenge against his grandfather, Alaric, the Fifth Earl of Hammondsford. [I think I have the name right].
What a tale - great plot - excellent characters and nasty relatives - mystical seduction - weird villians.
Definitely Recommend for those who like a well-rounded story.
Nothing special.......2006-07-08
From the back cover:
Widowed at twenty-three, Celene Bernard had learned that men could not be trusted--a woman needed a fiery spirit and a strong will to protect herself. So when she saw a trapper harassing a defenseless woman, she was so enraged that she pushed him into the Prairie du Chien mud. But she was even more furious when the uncivilized brute demanded her as his bride--and her traitorous father agreed.
An Englishman who had lived among the Indians, Burke Cardwell hardened his heart to her protests. But he soon grew determined to keep her from harm--and win her respect. When he saved her from a violent assult, Celene was forced to admit her gratitude. But as they braved danger among the fur traders, trappers, and Indians of the Mississippi Valley--and struggled to triumph over hardship and betrayal--a debt of gratitude grew into a bond of passion, and two hearts hardened by the wilderness were softened by the tender touch of love...
And my review:
Grayson obviously did a lot of research for this book, and it shows. Not in a good way. The book reads like a history textbook rather than a romance novel.
And the whole setup for the book felt very contrived. I can usually suspend disbelief enough for the sake of a good book, but it was just too much here. I had no idea why the characters acted the way they did. It made no sense why Burke instantly wanted Celene as his wife. It also made no sense as to why her father would agree.
This is the second time I've tried a book by Grayson that didn't meet the standards of a good romance novel. There will not be a third. If you're really determined to read BRIDE OF THE WILDERNESS, try to borrow it, as it's not going to be a keeper, even if you do get through it.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2000-04-12
This set makes a great gift set. As well as entertaining, the books provide strong role models, who trust in God. I recommend it for all ages. Excellent writing is prominent throughout all three books. These books will keep you coming back for more!
