Book Description
In this highly readable book a distinguished group of environmental experts argues that in order to solve global environmental problems, we must view them in a broad interdisciplinary perspective that recognizes the relationships-the interconnected circle-among ecology, economics, and ethics. The contributors-William A. Butler, Paul H. Connett, David Ehrenfeld, Thomas Eisner, Malcolm Gillis, William Goldfarb, Wes Jackson, Gene E. Likens, Norman Myers, David Pimentel, Holmes Rolston III, and Edward O. Wilson-address a wide range of concerns from global atmospheric degradation and spreading toxification of the environment to loss of forests and massive species extinctions. "The problem is how to foster economic development that does not ruin the environment. . . . Accomplishing such a task will not be easy, but it may be assisted by collections of expert essays like Bormann and Kellert's Ecology, Economics, Ethics."-Daniel J. Kevles, New York Review of Books "In this volume some of the best minds in the business focus their attention on key environmental problems. I recommend it highly."-Paul R. Ehrlich, Bing Professor of Population Studies, Stanford University

What do you do if you're 25 miles into the backcountry and a member of your hiking party develops appendicitis? Or if you're nearing the summit of a 14,000-foot peak and your climbing partner suffers a ruptured cornea from the altitude? If you thought ahead, you'd pull out your copy of Medicine for Mountaineering. This is probably the top book to carry for serious backcountry injuries. There are other titles that cover basic first aid, but not with this book's depth and specificity.
Ten M.D.s with a fondness for wilderness outings contributed to the chapters, and it shows: medical jargon abounds. But don't be intimidated by words like thrombophlebitis or pneumothorax--you might need to know how to treat blood clots in the legs or a ruptured lung. Most of the injuries covered have their origin in high-altitude mishaps, whether it be kidney infections from dehydration or blunt head trauma from falling rocks. Other ailments like appendicitis and heart disorders are less common, but if they strike in the backcountry, it's vital to know what to do. The range of medical advice stretches all the way to administering intravenous drips and performing tube thoracostomies (inserting a drain valve into a patient's fluid-filled lungs). Though the authors warn that such procedures should be performed by a trained physician, if it's a life-and-death situation miles from any hospital, these instructions could make all the difference. Other topics covered include: soft-tissue injuries, fractures, burns, gastrointestinal disorders, neural disorders, infections, allergies, heat and solar injuries, animal bites and stings, and cold injuries. A list of useful prescription drugs for mountaineering is also valuable.
Who could benefit from this book? Anyone venturing into the outdoors, but particularly those bound for remote locations who've already mastered basic first aid. Emergency medical technicians will find some of the topics familiar, but even they won't be expert in all the injuries outlined here. At 20 ounces, Medicine for Mountaineering is worth the extra weight in your pack. --Demian McLean
Book Description
Beyond first aid, this is the medical bibles for backcountry adventurers. Written by a team of climber/physicians and considered the authoritative reference on backcountry medicine. Any trip into remote territory calls for earnest planning and foresight, including preparing for the possibility of illness or injury. A basic knowledge of first aid can help; but how would you treat an appendicitis attack high on a foreign mountain? What if one of your companions had a stroke, or contracted hepatitis on a boat in mid-ocean? Medicine for Mountaineering picks up where first aid manuals leave off. Written by a team of climber-physicians, this fully updated edition of a classic provides expert information as well as procedures on major and minor medical emergencies. Areas covered include: Diagnosis, psychology of accidents, preventive measures. Traumatic injuries--fractures, burns, soft tissue injuries--heat, cold, altitude. Diseases, pain, infections, allergies. Medications, medical kits, legal considerations. Authoritative and comprehensive, Medicine for Mountaineering should be on the equipment list of any hiker, climber, boater, and outdoor user who ventures more than 24 hours beyond medical attention.

Medicine for Mountaineering .......2007-05-12
Great, compact reference for EMS and guides who work at altitude.
Survival Reading.......2006-12-31
A good book to read covering most medical problems anyone would meet. Unfortunately its too big at 900g (2lb) to carry about, and most would leave it behind. Some of the serious medical problems finish with "evacuate the patient" if its not available hardluck! I didn't expect a set of pictures on how to remove an appendix but obviously there is a limit to what can be done in the field.
The writer seemed concerned about being sued and mentions that he nearly left out the very small bit about what should be included in a medical kit, to me this is as important as the rest of the book. In my case, some guidance and information is better than no information.
A Must For Serious Adventurers.......2006-01-12
This book comprises 3 main sections. The first section deals with some basic principles of diagnosis, evacuation and preventive medicine like immunisation, sanitation and disinfection.
Section 2 deals with all sorts of traumatic and non-traumatic injuries/disorders. Fractures and burns, disorders affecting various organ systems are all covered. It's really extensive yet not too wordy for the layman who just needs some essential, practical and highly distilled information.
Section 3 deals with environmental injuries including high altitude problems, heat/cold injuries and animal bites. There is also a very useful glossary covering useful medications and their dosages. Definitely a must for serious adventurers.
Medicine for Mountaineering.......2003-11-05
Excellent source of information for those having to deal with injuries in the wilderness. As a survival instructor I recommend it to all my classes.
Where is mine!.......2001-08-08
Here I am, ordering a replacement. Of all the books on health and first aid, this is the one I look to the most often. I live on a remote island and have used this book to judge the severity of injuries and the need for evacuation, or just the need for time. I am not a mountaineer, but my family does manage to get into scrapes....concussions, chainsaw injuries, broken glass and a recent allergic reaction. This last incident is what made me realize that my ancient copy was gone. This book has been better than any other book as far a raising my kids in a proactive way, especially when it comes to emergency room conversations!

Helped a lot during my trip to Bangkok.......2007-09-17
I took this book everywhere I went. It gives you a great perspective on the things you will find, things to look out for, and a great guide on how to get to the places you want to go.
I went on business to Bangkok, and during the 3 days that I had to go around, this book helped me find those things that mattered most.
I think it is a great read for anyone who is planning to go to amazing Bangkok and it is a must when travelling around in the city. Lonely Planet books are seriously great!
Still perhaps the best basic guidebook...........2007-01-18
As a frequent visitor to Thailand I recently used this latest guide for Bangkok from Joe Cummings (plus his assistants) and found it to be more than adequate. If anything, I would personally like more hotel recommendations for each area of this city, those one could call "a find". I found some on my own by walking the area I stayed in and moved to one of them as Joe was too kind in the description of hotel I first stayed in.
Be sure to call about open times for restaurants as two I went to were closed earlier than was given in the guide (no fault of Joe's I'm sure).
Good, but second best.......2005-03-18
I was fortunate enough to spend a month in Bangkok and bought both the Lonely Planet and the Moon Guides. I generally read both books before I went anywhere, so I can fairly compare them.
The Lonely Planet guide was always worth reading -- it often added something I didn't find in the Moon guide. The highly detailed map in the back of the book was also quite worthwhile. However, if I had to have just one book, it would have been the Moon guide by Carl Parkes.
Carl's explanations always seemed a little bit richer, and a little bit more in touch. His introduction to the Thai language left me much better equipped to try my hand, and his culture and language sections also stood out. The overall impression, true or not, is that Carl has a deeper understanding and familiarlity with the Thais and Bangkok than Joe. But to be fair, I was happy with both books, and happier still that I had brought both with me.
Its too bad that the Moon guide is harder to find than Lonely Planet's .... but I definitely recommend it.
Where would you buy it?.......2004-10-13
Amazon.com says this book will be published on March 2005. But try to go to Lonely Planet's online shop, then you can see that it has been published on Sep. 2004. Next, bn.com says it's been publised on March 2004. I don't know which is right. But I'm sure that this book came out already.
I gave 5 stars, however, because I knows LP is a great series at least.
A bit disappointing.......2003-09-11
Compared to LP London and LP Paris I read and have been early this year, I'm a bit disppointed with LP Bangkok. Although it has an amazing section on food/noodles, I'm rather disappointed that the book does not clearly direct and describe to readers how to get to the places/famous spots it suggested!!!! Also the book does not include a map on the Bangkok transit system - making public transit commuting difficult!!!

Customer Reviews:
Useless.......2007-10-03
If you are hoping to get a superficial look at the layout of Bangkok--this map is for you. If you hope to navigate by it--don't bother. Only the major streets are labeled, it doesn't extend beyond the center of the city, and because of the lamination (which I thought would be a plus) it doesn't fold well. I read another review which complained about the lack of detail but I went ahead and bought this thinking they couldn't possibly print a map without including adequate detail--I was very wrong. Buy a different map!
Nice Water-Proof Map.......2007-04-02
My only criticism of this map is that it doesn't extend north enough to include the airport. I'm trying to gauge how far central Bangkok is from the airport and can't do it with this map. Other than that, it's nice....and since I'll be walking a lot, the water-proof factor is key.
Cruel Joke.......2006-09-30
This map is a cruel $9 joke by Lonely Planet: central area only, major streets only, selected hotels only. Maps in their guidebook are superior, or simply use Google Earth.
Helpful, Compact, and Lamenated.......2002-08-08
Easy to carry around and sturdy for it's lamenated. For it's size it can fit in one's small bag. The index of places of interest such as palaces, parks, Wats, bus stations, and other venues are listed. Necessity places such as embassies are very useful as well, especially as one is doing visa work to travel to neighboring countries. If you're a tourist and your survival Thai isn't very developed, this map will help you when taking taxis. Choa Praya River express stops are also included
Excellent pocket guide to Bangkok.......2002-01-09
Highly recommend. We used it for 4 days to get around this fantastic city.

Somewhat useless.......2007-10-02
If you go to just about any website concerning Thailand, you will be directed to city maps, etc., which are way more informative than this "guide". Better still, wait until you get to Bangkok and buy one there.

Book Description
It's 1963, and 14-year-old Georgia Hughes has been sent by her uncaring parents from Brazil-the only country she knows-to a boarding school in the United States. With her world turned upside down, there are only a few things she can cling to: a moonstone given to her by a special boy named Tim, and a picture of President Kennedy. Georgia retreats into a fantasy world, until the day that Tim unexpectedly appears at the boarding school, and wants her to run away with him. She hates school and her parents-but can she trust a boy who has suddenly become a mystery to her?
"Georgia is a likable and well-drawn character with a wonderful voice. Readers will empathize with her and cheer her coming-of-age.
-School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2006-03-20
This fun book is about a girl named Georgia Hughes. She lived in Brazil but hings soon got out of hand. She met a boy named Tim, they become really good friends. A couple of months after she met him, her mother sends Georgia to a private school in North America. After along time of searching for a school, they find a private boarding school. She meets lots of friends there and imagines talking to the ghost of the person that founded the school and imagines talking with JFK. It sounds weird but it's actually really fun.
I liked this book because it's very creative and very fun. This book is kind of realistic, if you have imagination. Georgia struggles with real life problems, the problem that relate to her parents. Her parents are all over the place, her father is with another woman, and her mother can't stop smoking. It reminds me that there are lots of people who have problems and suffer from it. This book would be fun to read if you're looking for a good book.
My favorite part in this book was the good ending. She could have gone with Tim and forget about everything in the past, but instead she stays at her school. It took her a lot of love for the school to not go with her best friend. At the end she says that the school is her home and doesn't want to leave it. If I were in her shoes I would just run away and never look back. This book is very good and I rate it a 9.5 out of 10.
Well worth to buy.......2005-12-09
I recently read a book for my pleasure reading called "WHEN WAS MY FATHER" BY AMY GORDON. The book is more for High School students how some people go through stuff with there parents when they divorce. If younger people would read it they wouldn't understand it very well like some High school students would. I think if I had read this story In my freshmen year I wouldn't of understand it very well now that I am a senior this year. I understand it very well and because I have Know people that have gone through this in there life since little or even older with there relatives. This story is basically that a little girl is beleving that JOHN F KENNEDY is her father because he is the only one he would hear her every time she would call him. This is a very good story , at the begin of the story it maybe borring but if you keep on reading you will see that it is is not that boring to read because it has the history of John F Kennedy is very good because its based on and after John F Kennedy dies. This book takes place first in brasil then it takes place in Washington D.C. in some boarding school that the little girl hasto go. Its a good book for people who would like to go to a boarding school in the future this will help them to know how good and bad sometimes in those schools. I think this girl is very delighted to think that John F Kennedy is her father ,and that helps her with her problems and hears her every time she needs someone to talk to when she is sad or mad. I would recommend this book to people who would want to be aware of boarding schools and what struggles do children go through in life when there parents get divorce.
My FAVORITE Book.......2005-06-11
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I met this author at a Young Authors Conference and purchased this book becuase it was about a boarding school. I LOVED IT!! I read it in a couple hours. It really keeps you entertained! The story is wonderful and Georgia is very realistic. YOU MUST READ IT!!!
When JFK was my Father.......2003-04-25
Thirteen year old Georgia Hughes knows that John F. Kennedy should be her father. Her real father is too busy at work for her, but when Georgia pretends to talk to JFK, he listens.
The book is written in three parts. The first part takes place in Brazil in 1963. Georgia's favorite things to do are draw, collect stamps, and play with her friend Tim on the beach. The two children love to pretend that they are the Sand Princess and Prince while they swim and play "stalk the enemy."
Then, in the second part, her mother takes her to a boarding school in the United States. She brings only her most treasured items, including her picture of JFK. Once classes start, she feels that she can't relate to the other girls. The only things that keep her happy are writing in English class, hearing the voice of Mrs. Beard (the dead school mistress) giving her advice, and pretending that she is talking with President Kennedy. It gets better for her, though, when she begins to learn the history of the people there and finds that they care about her.
Finally, in the third part, she meets up with Tim again. To her surprise, he had been at a nearby boy's boarding school the whole time she had been in the United States! He gives her the chance to run away from Beard School, and Georgia must decide where she belongs.
I liked this book because Georgia's character is very realistic, and she is brave enough to face her problems.
Lucey's Wonderful Review.......2003-04-23
This is a captivating book. It is different than most books I have read. I enjoyed it very much. This book is about a girl named Georgia who lives in Brazil. Her father, who she calls Winter, is very rich and they live in a mansion with a large amount of servants. One year, they take a trip to a beautiful beach where Georgia meets Tim, a boy with a big imagination. They fall in love and never see each other again. Georgia's parents get divorced and Georgia and her mother, who she calls La, move to the States. Here, they are very poor. La sends her off to boarding school where her only companions are a picture of JFK and the spirit of Wilma Beard, the lady who started the school. This book is heartwrenching. Georgia has to decided whether to run away with Tim or stay at the school. This book will keep you reading all day long! DON'T MISS OUT!!!!
