Book Description
In many ecosystems dung beetles play a crucial role--both ecologically and economically--in the decomposition of large herbivore dung. Their activities provide scientists with an excellent opportunity to explore biological community dynamics. This collection of essays offers a concise account of the population and community ecology of dung beetles worldwide, with an emphasis on comparisons between arctic, temperate, and tropical species assemblages. Useful insights arise from relating the vast differences in species' life histories to their population and community-level consequences. The authors also discuss changes in dung beetle faunas due to human-caused habitat alteration and examine the possible effects of introducing dung beetles to cattle-breeding areas that lack efficient native species. "With the expansion of cattle breeding areas, the ecology of dung beetles is a subject of great economic concern as well as one of intense theoretical interest. This excellent book represents an up-to-date ecological study covering important aspects of the dung beetle never before presented."--Gonzalo Halffter, Instituto de Ecologia, Mexico City

Description:
The aim of the research was to show how a change in land use influences the structure of a dung beetle assemblage and affect its conservation. In the Pineto Urban Regional Park (Rome), dog dung is the sole food resource currently available for scarab dung beetles, after the recent removal of wild and domestic herbivores. A one-year sampling was conducted to study the scarab assemblage in dog scats (1999) and to compare it with the previous assemblage associated with sheep droppings (1986). Richness, evenness and similarity parameters were compared between the two allochronic assemblages. From sheep to dog dung, an impoverishment of the total richness was observed (from 19 to 9 species) together with an increase of individuals (by 7 times). Dog dung harboured 20% of the current scarab dung beetle fauna of Rome, probably as a consequence of the dog mixed diet, rich in cellulose. Both the communities showed a high percentage of tunnellers, probably because of the food shortage and, for dog scats, of the high dehydration rate. A comparison with other Roman scarab communities enhanced that: (1) the change in food resource determined a higher difference in species composition respect to other parameters (size and habitat diversity); (2) dog dung provided a temporary refuge for species that otherwise may encounter local extinction in urban environments.

Description:
Dung beetles play a major role in nutrient cycling in the tropics. While a number of studies have indicated decreasing diversity of dung beetles as a result of deforestation, scant information exists on the implications of this for decomposition. This study compares dung beetle assemblages at forest and deforested sites on the eastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes and examines the importance of species richness and assemblage biomass in the decomposition of standardized dung pats. Results from pitfall trapping indicated that species richness, assemblage biomass and the number of beetles arriving at dung pats were greater at forest sites than at deforested sites. Although dung removal was generally faster at forest sites, between 50 and 100% of each 100ml pat was removed within 3 days at all sites. Dung remained attractive to beetles for longer at forest sites, where it remained moister, than at the deforested sites. Dung beetle activity significantly reduced the number of flies emerging from dung. In an observation of decomposition of 96 separate dung pats, dung disappearance after 24h was more frequently and more closely related to total assemblage biomass than to species richness. This study indicates that deforestation results in a reduced efficiency in decomposition by dung beetles that can be attributed mainly to reduced assemblage biomass at individual dung pats.

Description:
Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine effects of three paracoprid dung beetles, Copris ochus (Motschulsky), Copris tripartitus Waterhouse and Onthophagus lenzii Harold, on the growth of pasture herbage and physical characteristics of the underlying soil. Treatments consisted of beetles plus dung, dung only and controls with neither dung nor beetles present. In the field in 2001, higher herbage yields were obtained with O. lenzii>=C. ochus=C. tripartitus>=only dung=control after 5 months. The air permeability of soil at a depth of 10cm was highest when C. ochus was present (0.56cmh^-^1), and lowest in the control (0.38cmh^-^1). However, no significant differences were found among treatments in air permeability at 20cm. In 2002/2003, the presence of all three species of dung beetle together was associated with higher herbage yields and with higher percentage nitrogen content than the control. In the laboratory, the presence of C. ochus and C. tripartitus was found to increase significantly the total crude protein in grass shoots and total digestible nutrient, compared with the control. The digestibility, dry intake and relative feed value of perennial ryegrass were highest where feces had been buried by O. lenzii. Acid detergent fiber was low in all treatments. The data suggest that the tunneling of paracoprid beetles improves the physico-chemical characteristics of soil and increases the feed value of herbage by mixing and incorporating organic matter into the soil.

Description:
Although insects are crucial for maintaining ecosystem function, our understanding of their overall response to human activity remains limited. This is no less true of dung-burying beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae), which provide a suite of critical ecosystem functions and services, yet but face multiple conservation threats, particularly from landscape conversion. Here we use a review and meta-analysis to synthesize the current knowledge concerning response to tropical forest modification and fragmentation of dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae). For every modified habitat type and individual forest fragment across 33 studies, we calculated six dung beetle community parameters, standardized relative to intact tropical forest. We organized modified habitats along an approximate disturbance gradient ranging from selectively logged, late and early secondary forest, through agroforestry, tree plantations, to annual crops, cattle pastures and clear-cuts. Secondary forests, selectively logged forest and agroforests supported rich communities with many intact forest species, while cattle pastures and clear-cuts contained fewer species overall with few forest-dwelling species. Abundance generally declined with increasing modification, but was quite variable. Communities in open habitats were often characterized by hyper-abundance of a small number of small-bodied species, leading to low evenness. Across fragmentation studies, dung beetle species richness, abundance and evenness declined in smaller forest fragments. Richness and abundance sometimes declined in more isolated fragments, although this response appeared to depend on matrix quality. Across both habitat modification and fragmentation studies, geographic location and landscape context appeared to modify dung beetle response by influencing the available pool of colonists. We discuss potential underlying mechanisms and conclude with recommendations for management and conservation and for future research.

Description:
Fresh dung was collected from untreated cattle and cattle dosed with a spray-on formulation of high cis-cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos (2.1g/cow), on days 1, 3, 5 and 7 post-treatment. The survival and reproduction of the dung beetle Copris tripartitus Waterhouse, when given this dung was assessed. Residues of high cis-cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos in dung collected 1 day after treatment were sufficient to inhibit oviposition by female C. tripartitus. However, there was no significant effect on egg-laying in dung collected at days 3, 5 or 7 days post-treatment. In a second generation of C. tripartitus, derived from beetles fed the dung from treated animals, residues in dung collected both 1 and 3days after treatment were sufficient to inhibit oviposition, and residues in dung collected 1 day after treatment inhibited dung consumption by newly emerged adults of C. tripartitus. It is concluded that dung voided by cattle treated with a spray-on formulation of high cis-cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos have toxic lethal effects for 1 day post-treatment and sub-lethal toxic effects on ovarian condition and brood-ball production in dung voided at 1 and 3 days post-treatment. The potential ecotoxic effects of these compounds are discussed in terms of dung beetle activity and strategies for parasite control of cattle in the Korean environment.

Cardinals Journal: Year by Year and Day by Day Review.......2007-08-15
Transaction was painless and saved me almost 50% off retail. The book, although indicated used, appeared to be new. Very pleased
Cardinals Journal: Year by Year & Day by Day Since 1982.......2007-01-12
absolute must for any fanatic member of Cardinal Nation, enormous amount of factual information about St. Louis Cardinal history, a great gift even for the Redbird Fan who has "everything"
gift for dad.......2007-01-09
i ordered this book as a birthday gift for my dad who is an avid cardinals fan. he loved it and it seemed very interesting.
Brings Back Memories.......2006-11-04
I am a long time Cardinals fan and this book brought back many memories of the games I used to listen to broadcast by Harry Caray and Jack Buck back in the 60's. It was full of information about interesting games, obscure statistics, and I found the details of how baseball was played in the old days very entertaining as well. For example, train schedules dictated that some games had to end early by prior agreement between both teams so they could leave town; overflow crowds were seated on the outfield with a rope stretched across as a temporary fence that kept getting shorter as the crowds kept coming; players for one of the teams umpiring the game when the lone regular umpire was sick or injured; the large number of regularly scheduled doubleheaders compared to the almost none we have today; and other interesting bits of information. I also liked the way the author tied in historical events that helped place baseball headlines into the context of what else was happening in the national and world news headlines of that day.
The only complaint I have is the too frequent inclusion of careless errors. For example, I doubt the Cardinals ever beat the Reds in Chicago; there are occasional reference to a pitcher getting a "shutout" win in a game the team won by a score like 5-1; and other miscellaneous typos like former reliever Sal Campisi referred to as Sam Campisi. These errors are a distraction, but the wealth of information about this great baseball team is a gold mine for any Cardinals fan and probably for any baseball fan.
It was Real Good but. . ........2006-06-26
The big issue is the statistics. The way the preview read was that the Cardinals batting and pitching stats would be in the book each year. Not so. Just the leader in categories so you do not know a certain players stats like batting average, homers, RBI etc. Same for the pitchers, only top winner, ERA etc. If all the players stats could have been given, at least the years they could be found, this book would be out of sight.

Customer Reviews:
very good guidebook, but don't make it your trekking bible.........2000-02-26
this book was a great help in introducing me to the world of trekking, in terms of all the equipment i would need and the things i could expect while on a trek in nepal... it made the idea of trekking in nepal very feasible to me, and gave me confidence... but once i started trekking in nepal, i only used it as a light reference, mainly to look at the maps and see how far along i was on the trek, and perhaps to gain some information about the areas i was going through... as the author states, the suggested itineraries are not absolute, and, according to how much time and money you have, should only be used as a reference; some suggested days were too long for my group, and on other days we trekked longer distances than suggested... it's not every year you get to go to a place like nepal, so i suggest you give yourself plenty of time to enjoy your trek, take some extra rest days, and not make your trek a race...i needed more money than what this book suggested i would need; prices change... and also, especially on the annapurna trekking route, many lodges are being built every year and it's impossible for guidebooks such as this to keep up; i often thought it unfair for books like this to name specific lodges, while other lodges, some of them new, with better food and people, go unmentioned; talking with guides, porters, or other trekkers would be a good way of finding quality lodges... i think this book does a very good job of preparing you for a trek in nepal, but once you're there, keep your mind open for other sources of information, and use this book as a reference guide and not your one and only trekking "bible"... you'll get more out of your experience in nepal that way...
Nice only for the armchair traveller........1999-12-02
I've used this book for 2 treks in Nepal and it was a disappoinment (the book, not the treks). As mentioned above, the book provides a plethora of trekking essentials (preparation, etc.) and background info. To use it as a guide on the actual trail is altogether another matter.
The maps are too general and is NOT suitable for actual guidance. The suggested itinerary varies too greatly for the average trekker. Some suggested trekking days that are way too difficult to complete or way too short. Things are changing quickly in Nepal...and the book does not keep up with this adequately.
I've meet many people on the trail that were also dissapointed in the misinformation regarding festival dates. The Nepalese use a lunar calendar so it is easy to see why the dates can be off from year to year. It is unfortunate if someone plans their vacation by this. There are too many misleading information here...and for a foreigner/tourist/traveller/trekker, this can prove disappointing and costly.
Take it from someone who's been there, use this book to entertain yourself, not to trek with.
The greatest trekking guide to Nepal.......1999-05-15
I bought it when I was planning to travel to Nepal. Unfortunately, I couldn't go, but the informations on the book helped me a lot to get in contact with nepali culture and details about trekking in this interesting country.
What the Nepal trekker needs to know: it's all here........1999-03-05
This latest edition of Stan Armington's guide to trekking in the Nepal Himalaya (note the lack of an "s", as in "Sierra") provides a panoply of information for both the trekker and the armchair traveler. First traveling to Nepal in the mid-sixties, Mr. Armington has lived there since 1971. He has been in the business of organizing treks longer than almost anyone. He knows the country and the people and writes from a wealth of first-hand knowledge.
Whether one treks solo (not recommended, really, but certainly possible) or with a trekking company, this informative book provides ALL the information one needs to have a successful, delightful, and authentic trekking experience in this ancient and remote kingdom. (Nepal is a Hindu kingdom, with a Hindu king.)
As Mr. Armington acknowledges, trekking is neither a walk in the country nor a climbing experience. Hence, he goes into great detail to prepare the adventurer for what will for most people be one of the major vacationing events of their lives.
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. A visitor must know how to take care of oneself and also how to have a minimal impact on the environment and social structure. Mr. Armington covers all these matters excellently.
The trekking routes are there, too, almost all of them walked--and measured (with a GPS)--by the author to ensure complete accuracy.
Armchair travelers will enjoy the color pictures and the descriptions of the land and its people. Travelers and trekkers will want to devour the information, basically cover-to-cover.
For someone planning a trek to the Nepal Himalaya, this book is an absolute essential. It should be used through all stages of planning and carried in the rucksack on the trek. It's that good, and that necessary, and that complete--a distillation of a adult lifetime of experience in the region by a world-reknown travel professional--in a word, a real bargain.

Customer Reviews:
A must-read for parents and siblings of children with disabilities.......2007-03-04
As a retired special needs teacher, I worked with many families with children with disabilities and was able to observe how siblings interacted. "What About Me?" hits the nail right on the head. Siegel describes several patterns siblings may fall into, including the 'parentified child,' the 'overachieving child,' the 'acting-out child,' and the 'withdrawn child,' among others. She points out characteristics parents can watch for, and ways to help children in each classification to better cope with the stresses of growing up with a sibling with a disability. Adult siblings will gain insights into their 'growing-up years' from reading this book, too.
Important read for anyone who is a sibling of disabled........2006-01-31
At my local bookstore, this book literally fell off the shelf at my feet and I knelt down and picked it up. I knew instantly that I had to buy it. I cried when I read it because it reminded me of what it was like being a younger sister of a disabled sibling. Although it brought back a lot of memories and misplaced guilt that I have tried to overcome, the book gives good explanations as to some of the outcomes of growing up in this type of family and the dysfunctions that can occur. I would highly recommend this book and thank the authors for their contribution.

Book Description
The day began like any other day. Then the letter arrived. The letter from Hugo that changed everything.
Anna hadn't heard much from Hugo since losing her two older brothers. Jonas had died of AIDS when Anna was eleven, and Michael had disappeared in a landmine explosion in Bosnia two years later. Hugo was their friend and his presence in her life was too painful a reminder of their absence, so Anna shut him out.
Her brothers' deaths tore Anna's family apart. Her mother dedicated her time to searching the war-ravaged countryside, trying to find out whether Michael was dead or alive. Her father busied himself with his projects. And what about Anna? Anna was left to look after herself, keeping silent, not letting anyone get close.
Now, three years later, Hugo says Michael may be alive. A spark of hope ignites within Anna, but is it false hope? She wants to tell her mother, but Hugo's letter is written in red felt pen, their old code for don't tell anyone. Does Anna have the courage to let Hugo back into her life? If they work together there may be a chance to find Michael and heal her fractured family.

What About Anna? was a beautiful book about a lost girl. Anna is lost, sad, and pushes everyone away until something in her changes. This book was VERY good, but depressing at someparts, and left me hanging at the end. We need a sequel!
