Very happy with product and price!.......2005-09-23
My husband had requested this book, and was really pleased with the condition. He had seen it before, and asked me to order it.
Book Description
Suitable for the novice and the experienced hiker alike, this comprehensive guide to north Georgia mountains is now better than ever. With the participation of the Georgia Conservancy, this book has been significantly revised, adding more than 50 new trails. Now arranged geographically and even more user-friendly, THE HIKING TRAILS OF NORTH GEORGIA features 144 hikes and offers information regarding environmental ethics, common terms and symbols, and mountain biking.
Customer Reviews:
A good reference guide.......2006-03-09
This book was highly-recommended, and it does not disappoint. It provides useful maps and directions for locating trailheads, and detailed descriptions for planning short day hikes or longer multi-day treks for experienced backpackers.
A good reference guide for hikers living in the Atlanta area.
High on a mountain.......2004-08-14
Since I moved to Georgia 5 years ago, this book has been my most reliable hiking companion. The maps and directions are good, and the trail descriptions are detailed. A handy sidebar tells you the important stuff: what towns the trail is near, what features you'll encounter, the difficulty rating, the ranger district, and the length. Trail histories and Cherokee name translations add interest to the excitement of hiking in the lush Appalachians.
The "highlights" sections for each trail are especially nice -- peaks, falls, rapids, creeks, scenic views, notable ruins, giant trees, etc. are listed along with the mileage. It also has a decent amount of room for your own notes.
I wouldn't mind if they had a new edition with more Georgia trails; I know some of the newer volumes in this series feature more Georgia trails. However, I realize a more complete guide might have to be about 900 pages and therefore difficult to fit in the Camelback. It's a good book, though, and I've recommended it to many.
Homan hits a homer.......2001-03-18
Tim Homan defined hiking in north Georgia. His trail descriptions and mileage are accepted as the most accurate. The directions to the trailheads are right on the money.
The first time I met Tim he was walking a trail with a wheel, measuring the distance. That was almost 15 years ago. In fact, Tim wrote the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest brochure trail descriptions. That brings me to the only problem with this book. Its title should be "Hiking Trails of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest" since he rarely strays outside of its management area. If you have hiked all the trails in the book you would have hiked less than half the trails in North Georgia.
Still, there are at least three hundred miles of hiking trails in this book, and you can chose your favorites based on the quick guide in the margin of the book. My personal recommendations from the book would be DeSoto Falls for a family day-hike, Appalachian Trail from Neel's Gap to Hogpen Gap for a challenging day-hike and Duncan Ridge for the most challenging multi-day hike.
The maps are improving with each edition, and Tim is now aided by the excellent help of the Georgia Conservancy. I guess the best testimonial for this book is that each time a new edition comes out I am forced to buy it because my copy of the previous edition is so dog-earred from over use.
Excellent logistic and descriptive hiking guide.......1998-06-26
This is THE serious hiking/backpacking guide for the North Georgia Mountains. Tim is very accurate and precise on logistic details such as trailheads and landmarks. He's also good at describing views, falls and flora. I have hiked up what what Tim describes as 'steep descents' and thought I should have hiked in the direction Tim wrote. His Joyce Kilmer / Slickrock Wilderness guide also is spectacular for a remote area in Western North Carolina.
The definitive reference for North Georgia hiking.......1998-02-13
An excellent reference for hiking North Geogia. Includes trail distaces, expected fauna and flora, interesting sites to look for, directions to the trailhead, and anything else you might need. Includes information for the begining hiker and a quick reference for all the trails. I've looked at many trails books for North Georgia and this is continually one of the best. Small enough for packing too!

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money.......2005-08-31
PLEASE NOTE: THERE are NOT 170 hikes in the book. The whole series must contain that many.
I own 3 books in this series. The Southern Appalachian, the Virginias, and the Mid-Atlantic States guide. I have found these books to be a great aid in planning hikes, especially 2-3 day backpacking trips. Since most of these hikes are either one-way or round trip (as opposed to circuit hikes) you either need to have two cars or plan on seeing the same sites twice. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but other books have better circuit hikes.
This series IS very informative, not only with regards to the actually hike, but also the history both natural and otherwise of the area you are hiking in.
I have not used this edition as much as I have the other 2 guides that I own in this series, but it did come in handy during a spur of the moment trip to NC/TENN. The maps could be a little better, as they are topographical maps with a green line for the trail.. They are adequate, but I've seen better.
All 45 hikes come with a description, a map, an elevation profile, and an itinerary, as well as various other information.
When planning for a hike I do tend to use this book in conjunction with other books, but I usually take this book (or copies of the pages) on the actual hike itself. The fact that the pages are so small allows for easier handling and storage of the laminated pages during the trip.
So if you enjoy hiking and are near the AT while in the 'Southern Appalchians', you may want to take a look at this book. It is well worth the money.
Exploring The Appalachian Trail: Georgia, North Carolina, Te.......2002-10-28
I checked this book out of my local library and found it to be the most informative book on the AT. The sections of the AT that I have personally hiked were very well covered in this book.It is very difficult to find accurate maps with tons of land marks and information the terrain. As well as a well thought out itinerary so you may better gauge your time and enjoy the trail, rather than worrying about where you are going to find water and shelter. So now I'm on amazon.com to buy this book to use on my next visit to the AT.
not for the out of stater.......2002-05-03
I'm probably spoiled by the AMC guides for New England, but I found this book to be somewhat uninvting and lacking in some key areas. The maps weren't all that great they clearly aren't for a guy from the north east who's trying to find his way through the red dirt maze that is North Georgia. Directions to the trailheads could be markedly improved, as some (particularly the ones I used) use forest service roads that park rangers (let alone easily purchased maps) don't know well.
The copy and descriptions are good once I got to the trailhead, and organized linearly along the trail. I really enjoyed the plots of trail elevation over distance.
A guide beyond the day hiker.......2000-09-25
I used this book to plan my first trip to the AT with a group of Boy Scouts. It was extremely useful in selecting my route. Especially useful was the trail summary in the beginning of each chapter. Also equally useful was the hike itinerary, giving distances between significant points. I found, however, the linear trail profile to be slightly misleading on a few sections of the trail. (More useful was the profile found in The Appalachian Trail Official Map from the Appalachian Trail conference.) This day hike book was perfect for my 5 day trip because each hike begins where the other left off. This was vital in my planning and I would highly recommend it for anyone needing a detailed description of the trail. Oh, and don't forget your hand lens. :)
Finally, planning a day hike is EASY..........2000-06-25
If you're planning to hike a small day or two-day section of the Appalachian trail in or around NC, this is the book for you. I wanted to hike a small section of the trail, but I only had two days and had to finish at a very specific point. I used the book to help me plan the hike and it was amazingly easy; none of the obstacles I expected caused problems. The hike went off without a hitch, thanks to the brilliantly organized hiking guide. Aside from the planning aspect, the topographical maps were priceless along the trail. I considered doing the hike without a planning book, but I'm thankful that I used such a quality source.
Book Description
One of 11 official guides to the Appalachian Trail, each of which includes a pack-sized book and up to seven separate water-resistant maps in a resealable plastic bag, this volume covers the southernmost 235 miles of the famous footpath--from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to the eastern end of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the North Carolina/Tennessee line. The three detached, full-color, tear-resistant, two-sided maps cover, respectively, Georgia, southwestern North Carolina, and the park. The maps are at a scale of an inch to a mile and include elevation profiles and topographical lines. Detailed trail descriptions are in the book, along with information on water sources, shelters, and road access points; background on area history, points of interest, geology, and natural resources; and locator maps and photographs.

Great packet.......2007-10-10
I'm a novice hiker, but hike on the GA part of the AT when I do. This product was recommended to me by a friend & the packet of maps is excellent. I especially LOVE the map that includes the elevation changes of the trail. Definitely worth it for the price.
I like the AT guide books........2003-12-26
I'm not a weight freak. Part of long backpacking trips is dealing with what might be a heavy pack to some. I'm a strong hiker, so I don't whine about heavy packs the way others do. I like having the trail guide along. They've saved me from many a wrong turn, as I'm not big on bushwhacking and orienteering. And I just plain like reading them when I have some extra time to kick back and relax under the trees.
As good as the rest of 'em.......2000-07-03
The usual Appalachian Trail guide. Full of information you need and information you don't need, missing things you wished you knew. Apparently the people who publish these books have yet to figure out that, when hiking the Appalachian Trail, the amount of weight on your back is a consideration. Photocopy the important bits, cut them out and paste them together on an 11 x 17 piece of paper, photocopy again, on both sides of an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, leave the book at home and throw a half dozen chocolate bars in your pack instead. Enjoy the hike.

What an enlightening perspective on the magnificent joys of trekking in the north woods of the great state of Georgia. I read it nightly to cleanse my soul in preparation for a pleasant night's sleep. My family and I exalt the book and its detailed maps adorn our living room walls. Our most heartfelt appreciation to the man who composed this mighty work.

Great book for Urban Travel Photography!!!.......2006-11-28
In my opinion, this is a wonderful guide book for an Urban Travel photographer. The section on what to take is the most useful and it tells you what kind of subjects an urban travel photographer (as opposed to wildlife travel photographer or landscape travel photographer) should look out for.
[...]
I do not profess that that my photographs are great, but I feel that this book has helped me tremendously during my trip.
Contrary to what the previous reviewer mentioned, I do not find statements like this to be useless:
"Successful images have a point of interest"
"Skyscrapers are often covered in glass, which provides reflectons of the buildings around them"
"Fountains are often the centerpiece of city squares or traffic islands."
These are words that set a thinking photographer's mind to think - you can see the result of these words at my photo-site.
All in all, I am very happy to have read this book before my trip. It couldn't have been any better.
What a waste.......2006-07-22
I was looking for a book that might offer sound advice on shooting architecture and they seem surprisingly rare. When my search on Amazon turned up this book, it seemed a fair bet that urban travel photography would include shooting buildings so I gave it a try.
The first chapter covers equipment and the depth of coverage is limited to telling you that there are SLRs, advanced digital cameras, and rangefinders. The author is also kind enough to tell you that there are zoom lenses, prime lenses, and that some are telephoto while others are wide angle. He does not tell you which of these might come in most handy in an urban environment. He does not discuss the pros and cons of lighter, smaller, but slower lenses compared to the bigger, heavier, but also faster lenses that cost a lot more money. He doesn't really tell you much of anything beyond acknowledging the existence of basic equipment. If any of the above is news to you, then this book will be a real treasure trove but most will find it so elementary as to be utterly useless.
Unfortunately, the chapter on equipment is exactly like all of the following chapters in the book. I have culled a small sample of the amazing revelations this book has to offer.
"Successful images have a point of interest"
"Skyscrapers are often covered in glass, which provides reflectons of the buildings around them"
"Fountains are often the centerpiece of city squares or traffic islands."
These gems are a small sample but there are many similar "tips" to be found. There is a chapter that covers all aspects of photographic technique including exposure, composition, depth of field, and light in 14 pages that is mostly photographs. You can imagine the depth of coverage this allows for the various topics.
It's almost hysterically funny that the book is published in digest size, presumably so that you can carry it in a hip pocket. What's lacking is any information or advice that you would actually find useful to bring with you.
The book's one asset is that it is filled with various travel photos and some of them are quite nice. Unfortunately, the digest size of the book prevents them from being seen to their fullest potential.
Since there were no reviews at the time I bought this, I've "taken one for the team" and am posting this so you won't have to waste your money like I did.

Customer Reviews:
Plot Summary.......2006-08-17
The Raven Hill Mysteries series is an exciting about a group of six teenagers who form an odd job company and often end up uncovering a crime. Each book is by one of the six different characters, the first is from the point of view of the team member Liz. The group, "Teen Power Inc" is established by Liz as a way for the characters to make some money and are hired by the owner of Raven Hill's local newspaper, "The Pen". However they quickly become involved in uncovering whose behind a spate of attacks on the struggling newspaper including an arson attack, forgery and possibly a murder. Despite my poor description the book is gripping, the situations and characters are likable and realistic and the book is one of the many examples of Emily Rodda's brilliance and creativity. Although marketed at 9 - 12 year old's this book can be enjoyed by many and I heartily recommend it to all readers.
