With the destruction of the earth a realistic possibility, global change is the point on which theoretical discussions and practical challenges must converge.

From selecting a college, to contacting coaches, to succeeding during the all-important freshman year, the book provides a guide through a sometimes daunting process.

It's also an ideal resource for a younger athlete, perhaps a high school freshman or sophomore, who hopes to participate in college athletics and wants to get a head start.

This book provided us with an excellent (and accurate) depiction of what a student athelete should be aware of as he or she gets ready for college. Other books we read (or tried to read) were so sterile and/or out of date they didn't provide any sort of relevant guidance. I _highly_ recommend Grimes' book, even for students who aren't fully sure they want to pursue a college career. You might just find it helps them realize college isn't a bad idea and isn't too hard to do and play sports at the same time!

Fabulous!.......2007-01-24

I moved to Manhattan two years ago to begin my first post-collegiate job. I ran competitively in college and thought that running would be the easiest, not to mention most convenient, way to stay in shape once I had entered the working world. However, I ran into one problem...well, maybe two, or three, or four. It's dark before work and it's dark after work. It's too cold, too hot, and/or too cozy under my covers. Without my college teammates expecting me at practice, the motivation to get out and run was less than lacking. Walking past the Barnes and Noble in Lincoln square, I noticed a copy of The Chelsea Piers Fitness Solution in the window. I had heard of Chelsea Piers, but never really took the time to explore its offerings. So, I went into Barnes and Noble and browsed through the book. Needless to say, I bought a copy. I've also done some research on the Chelsea Piers website to find classes for the sports that seem to best match my personality and found out that the Field House at Chelsea Piers offers evening adult gymnastics and rock-climbing classes for all levels. So, it turns out you don't have to be a kid to enjoy exercise and make physical fitness fun! I definitely recommend this book for anyone who's sick of the treadmill and is ready for a change to make this year's New Year's resolution stick.

If you're considering becoming a volleyball coach, I'd recommend this book. There are tips on every phase of the game, from the physical skills of your players to the mental aspects of dealing with athletes under stress.

When I began thinking about coaching high school ball, this was one of the books I turned to for help and advice. It helped me, and it can help you, as well.

There are three books in this series of compilations of articles from Coaching Volleyball Magazine, the magazine of the American Volleyball Coach's Association. These articles are written by coaches going through the Coaching Accreditation Program Level II certification. Many are collegiate and high school coaches, some are club coaches. Interesting perspectives on many different aspects of running a team, a program, or a club. The technical elements are good, but you have to know the game relatively well for some of the advanced parts because the illustrations are kind of vague. The basic elements book is good for the beginning coaches.

Awesome! It practically covers everything to know about beach volleyball. It is of great value to anyone interested in the sport.It gives a good account of how the sport developed in Europe and USA. A good structural analysis of the game covers a chapter. It is a treasury of techniques, tactics and forms of training. All aspects of training like strategy,skills,speed,strength and conditioning are covered. It is well written and well supplemented with illustrations and color photos. This book is most probably the ultimate Coaches,athlete's and enthusiast's manual. The quality of the book material and the photos are an added bonus.I highly recommend it.

The Best (and most crowded) Parts of the Sierra.......2006-09-11

This guidebook really is worthy of the award it won. It describes over 60 hikes in the Sierras the bulk of which are long day hikes or backpack trips. Each route has a topographical map included, detailed descriptions and alternative routes or side trips included. What makes this guide fairly unique are the many (very beautiful) color plates and some wonderful sidebars on local history, including a discussion of arborglyphs left by Basque sheepherders and the fight by the climbing community to save "Camp 4" in Yosemite Valley.

Nonetheless, I cannot give the book 5 stars. There are several minor errors in the book. Arrowheads have not been found atop Mt. Whitney: that is an apocryphal story that dates back to Clarence King. Similarly, the claim that Mt. Rose is the only 10,000 ft. peak with a trail to the summit in the Tahoe area is untrue. The Tahoe Rim Trail goes right over the summit of Relay Peak and this even appears on their own map of the Mt. Rose hike. The main drawback of this book, however, is that it really only covers the popular backcountry hikes in the range. The book lists only 8 hikes in Sequoia and Kings Canyon and these are the premier hiking parks in California. So, while this book is good if you really have no idea of what is available in the Sierras, hikers with some foreknowledge, or those seeking solitude, will need to supplement this book with other sources.

Just used this book for a two-week road trip through California. I also had a few other Cal guidebooks with me and this one was the best. It was well organized, in depth and consistently gave good recommendations.

Too much politics, not enough substance.......2007-06-14

1. I live in California and thus I'm familiar (at least) with the surrounding region I live in etc...

2. This book physically looks good, has a nice layout, but is relatively devoid of concrete data (ie places to eat, stay etc...). Furthermore, it reads as if it were written by some college political science major at USF...

3. It's tough to find a good travel book; Perhaps the Moon publication might be better. However one thing is sure--> if you want a book with actual good information--> forget this one. If you just want a book with very cursory info--> this might be ok in that it's fairly compact, it covers the entire state etc...

Helps you see the whole state.......2007-01-19

Most people can say they know San Francisco/Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County, or San Diego. These are the places people typically hit up when they plan a trip to CA. Having lived several years in SoCal, I found this book opened my eyes to all the state has to offer. It balances the sections on the large cities with other destinations and activities. You can easily stay with friends in LA or SFO and get a better tour of the town than the book can offer, but what about Death Valley or the Redwoods or PCH? This is where the book has been of great help to me.

This is the first lonely planet book I've bought, but I'm very attached to it. It had lots of great listing from things to do to places to stay. I particularly linked to range of places to stay. It's organized into moderately priced to cheap options so you can pick what's right foryou... I used the 2000 edition.

Great guide, but outdated.......1999-06-29

Lonely Planet guides are the best out there, by far, at least for people who travel with a budget and only a pack on their backs, stay at hostels, and like to really experience a new location without being so touristy (Fodor's guides, for example, are the opposite of Lonely Planet's and are written for the upscale traveler). The California/Nevada guide is no exception, but it's just too outdated (published in 1996), and I wouldn't recommend buying it and instead would recommend waiting until the come out with a new one, whenever that will be. That's the only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars. They did just put out a new San Francisco one though ...

Lonely Planet has done it again!.......1998-07-03

Every Lonely Planet guide gives lots of tips for what to see, places to eat, and the "must-see" things when you travel. This guide explains the history of California and Nevada very well, and always has good suggestions of interesting places to visit. I am a native Californian, but I don't travel anywhere in the state without this guide.

Nicholas Morrow who's sister had the party in Kidnapped! wants to take Elizabeth out on a date,but she informs him that she already has a steady boyfriend. Jessica wants Nicholas Morrow as a boyfriend,and she calls Nicholas Morrow her boyfriend in the book.I wish guys were easy to come to me as they are to her.My fiancee isn't good looking. When She goes on a date with Nicholas to Cote d'or, Todd and his family are there because it is his mother's birthday,and Todd told Jessica he saw Elizabeth and Nicholas there.

Sometimes, You Have to Say No.......2003-08-25

In this fourteenth installment of the popular SVH series, Liz Wakefield finds herself struggling with a dilemma: does she accept a dinner date with a guy who has just moved into town or does she turn him down? Mind you, she has a steady boyfriend that she loves dearly, so you can see the problem. Being the super-nice girl that she is, she decides to accept. Of course, her decision nearly costs her her relationship with her boyfriend. Now, I realize that Liz only accepted the date because she didn't want to hurt the other guy's feelings, but in the process, she hurt her own boyfriend. I know she was just trying to be nice, but if I had been in her shoes, I would have just told the guy no. Sometimes, being nice means having to say NO.

It wasn't the best book I've read, but it was ok. Liz Wakefield's getting over her kidnapping ordeal, and then she meets rich handsome Nicholas Morrow. Nicholas is nice, caring, intelligent, all that stuff. Then Nicholas asks Liz out, & soon it gets into a big tangled web. Kind of shallow if you ask me. Remind me a lot of soap operas.
