4 out of 5 stars Great for the Breeder.......2005-05-12

First, let me say that I am not a breeder. I just have a little cockie friend as a pet. I found the book to be informative, but weighing very strongly to the breeder and less to the new owner. If I ever do decide to breed, then this book will be a great reference. However, I found that it didn't offer as much basic information in detail that a newer owner would like to have as other books that are less geared to breeders.

5 out of 5 stars Cockatiels! Pet-Breeding-Showing.......2000-01-31

This is the first book I reach for when I have a question. It is good for basic pet owner information and indispensible for the breeder. A valuable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant!.......1999-11-23

Ms. Reed's book is a wonderful reference. While some may say it is dry or technical I find that to be untrue. I have had the book in my personal library for a number of years. I have several copies due to the wear and tear from use. My first copy is highlighted, underlined, and filled with my personal notes. I raise a considerable number of handfed baby cockatiels every year. I advise everyone who buys a bird from me to pick up a copy of Ms. Reed's book. What I really like about the book is the range of topics covered. This book is not a simple introduction to cockatiels that is quickly outgrown by the cockatiel owner. This is a book that will be useful for years to come. There is expert information to take the reader from pet owner to breeder and on to showing.

While some of the information may have become dated (mutations), the overwhelming majority of the information in this book remains relevant and accurate. It has been a lifesaver many times over the past years. I look forward to the revised edition!

4 out of 5 stars Very informative for beginning breeders.......1999-09-06

While I've had companion parrots for a number of years, breeding was something new....after talking to several breeders, my husband and I decided to try our hand at cockatiels. Prior to actually purchasing breeder stock, I visited a local pet store and purchased this book----it was the best thing I could have done at that point. The book is very good at explaining all the different aspects of breeding---I highly recommend it for anyone who is thinking about breeding. This book may not be for a companion cockatiel owner, with a lot of technical information that is not exactly an exciting read, but as far as knowing what you are getting into before taking the step of actually setting up an aviary it is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars what a great book.......1998-11-13

this is such a great book. it has so many quality pictures and has tons of information for the novice and advanced birld lovers!

Golfers, as a breed, are willing to pry their unwilling bodies into any ungodly position if they think it will help their game, even more so if that position mirrors the languid power of, say, Sam Snead's, Fred Couples's, Payne Stewart's, or Tiger Woods's. Swing like a Pro tees up a new model, a computer-generated composite of more than 100 swings of the world's best golfers. The theory behind it is to isolate and emphasize those parts of the swings that all good swings have in common--the parts that every golfer, regardless of the entirety of motion, can adapt to his or her own. While the theory may be sound, the presentation is technically complex, as dry as a pot bunker on an August afternoon. If you already play the game, this may help shave a few strokes. If you're just starting out, head back to the range for a lesson. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

In a labor of love, novice golfers and professionals alike take to the practice tee to pursue the most coveted element of the game: the perfect swing. But even with a wealth of pros to model your swing after, the secret of the swing remains elusive. Should you grasp the club with a neutral grip like Jack Nicklaus, or use a traditional Vardon grip like Nick Faldo? If only someone would compile the best elements of the pros' swings to show you how to master the techniques for yourself. Dr. Ralph Mann and Fred Griffin did, and now they're sharing the secrets in this groundbreaking book.

Joined by premier golf instructor Fred Griffin, Dr. Ralph Mann captures the essence of the skills of golf's greatest champions in Swing Like a Pro. For seventeen years, CompuSport International's biomechanics expert Dr. Ralph Mann devoted himself to studying the swings of more than 100 PGA and LPGA Tour players to uncover the keys to a better game and a lower handicap. The results: a breakthrough learning tool, the computer-generated composite Pro.

Drawing on CompuSport's extensive research, the Pro embodies the mechanical elements of the holy grail of the golf swing--efficient, effective, and now achievable. Illustrated with 175 animated 3-D stills of the Pro that pinpoint the exact motions of a body executing the perfect swing, Swing Like a Pro provides accurate, consistent information about how to play the game properly. Dr. Ralph Mann and Fred Griffin break down the exact steps you can take to develop and refine your skills at performing every aspect of the shot. They examine and explain the setup, how to grip the club properly, the seven characteristics of a great backswing, how to impart energy to the club via a powerful transition move, and achieving distance and accuracy through a perfect downswing and timing following the Pro's example.

With its unique cutting-edge, scientific approach and the expertise of its authors, Swing Like a Pro promises to be the best golf Pro you ever consulted to help you improve your swing and shave strokes off your handicap.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best golf instruction book ever!!.......2007-09-30

Quite simply the best golf instruction book produced. Easy to follow with simple exercises to turn the weak slice into a powerful draw. By using an average of 150 pro golf swings gives an insight on how to at least try an emulate the correct positions of the various parts of the swing. If you cant take at least 3 shots off your handicap by purchasing this book then you must already be a pro!

5 out of 5 stars Technical ....No Doubt About It!!!!.......2007-08-08

If you are interested in improving your game from a technical stand point, there isn't a better book for the cost. I have shown and or given away at least 5 copies of this book to my closest friends after they watched me play to a 4 handicap and wonder how I did it. Everyone of them has thanked me to no end (even the CEO of my work place). The results are astonishing and it won't take long to get it!!

It discusses every aspect of the game. Short to long, wedge to driver, chipping to putter. And more importantly, the wacky world of golf instruction...who knew?

Just recently I shot a round of 76! This included a triple bogey! And I just missed 10 birdy putts! An exciting day to say the least. If I have any bad practice days, I just watch the ball flight and adjust my machanics in the swing. It has been unbeleiveable transformation.

I hope The Mann Group writes Part 2!

5 out of 5 stars The next level.......2007-07-24

I've been playing for 7 years and went through many lessons and own every video/ cd's and manuals out there...ran into a friend who loaned me this book to read. I shot a 75 after 2 buckets working on the concepts presented in this book, specifically the grip section, the ball position and most importantly the through swing drills. I was a 13 handicap, but it is dropping. One caution, the book starts out with simple concepts but turns increasingly in-depth, so take your time. Highly recommended!
This book will take you to the next level!

5 out of 5 stars Objective Advice.......2007-03-30

This book focuses on the fundamentals of a good golf swing and does so in a scientific manner. This should come as a relief to anybody who has been exposed to the mountains of contradictory information out there from books, magazines, and teachers. Ultimately, you will probably need a good teacher who can customize your swing, but this book is the place to start in order to understand the building blocks of a 'correct' swing.

5 out of 5 stars Swing like a plo.......2006-10-29

Very enlightening and informative book that really makes one think about things in a constructive manner.
The drills are easy to do and really address targetted problem areas (of which there are many :-) )
Easy reading and puts everything into sharp contrast. Really refreshing to have things explained from a factual and easy to understand standpoint.

Book Description

“Can you teach an ordinary golfer like me to drive the ball 300 yards?” With this question sportswriter Philip Reed’s search for the greatest golf swing begins. When Reed met ninety-year old Mike Austin, he knew that Austin held the record for the longest drive ever—an awesome 515-yard shot during a Senior PGA event. What he didn’t know is that he was forging a bond with a man whose amazing life he has now chronicled in a book that is charming, funny, and wise. As Reed’s tutelage under his cantankerous teacher begins, he learns of Austin’s winning wagers on trick shots, sharing a Hollywood apartment with Errol Flynn; giving secret lessons to Howard Hughes; and matching shots against Sam Snead and Ben Hogan. As Reed's drives get longer, Austin’s health worsens. Mike soon suffers a stroke that silences him, but Reed is sure that Mike wants someone to tell his story—of a man who could do one thing better than anyone else, who possessed the most prodigious golf swing ever. This book is not just for golfers, but for all readers who savor heartwarming stories of unexpected friendships and are eager to learn secrets of living life to the fullest.

5 out of 5 stars Hits a Golfer's Sweet Spot.......2007-10-09

Had a terrific time reading this book. It reaches out and grabs every weekend golfer by what they desire most... the Shangri-la of a long, monster drive by exploring the fascinating life of Mike Austin via the student/teacher relationship with the author.
Mike Austin's tales tend to come off as a bit hard to believe, sort of like the "Dos Equis's: World's Most Interesting Man," but Phil seems to bear out all as truth through what appears to be painstaking research.
It really didn't end up helping my swing but gave me inspired look at a the longest drive hitter, now off to get the dvd....

5 out of 5 stars 515 yards yeah right!!!.......2007-07-13

If you are a skeptic about anything you have heard about Mike Austin's 515 yard drive.....this book will put your questions to rest. Phil Read has provided a very real account of some of the mystery surrounding Mike Austin and the golf swing he taught.

Phil writes exactly how Mr Austin spoke.....straight shooting style. Phil talks about Austin's experiences with some of the best golfers from the 30's through to the 60's....Sarazen,Snead and Hogan etc.

There are some glimpses of golf instruction in the book....but it is really about Mike Austin. Some question's like ...why isn't Mike Austin not better known if he was so good etc are answered.

A great read along with Dan Shaugers How to Kill the Ball and 21st Century Golf Swing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read!.......2007-05-03

Phillip Reed has great writing charisma, if there is such a thing. While reading this book, on the one hand I wanted to hurry up and finish it so I'd know its content, and, on the other hand, like a good movie, I didn't want it to end. It's hard to beat a well written book containing intriguing subject matter. The clever intermingling of three stories - Mike Austin's extraordinary life, the author's quest for a 300 yard drive, and instruction on the Mike Austin Swing Method, itself, make this unique book a "must read" for golfers and nongolfers alike.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2007-03-21

A unique and entertaining tale of a bogey golfer's quest to hit a 300-yard drive is also a biography of Dr. Michael Hoke Austin, who holds the record for the longest drive in golf--515 yards. Anyone who has searched for the elusive secrets of perfecting their golf game can identify with the struggles of the author to understand Mike Austin and his method. Already in his nineties, Austin is difficult, cantankerous and cautious about sharing his knowledge; but his developing friendship with the author and his realization that his days are numbered evolves into an urgency to compile his knowledge as a legacy that meshes with the author's personal quest. We also meet long-drive champion Mike Dunaway and golf professional Dan Shauger, who Austin declares as the person best able to explain his method. The account of Austin's final years is also inspirational, a portrait of a man who has lived life fully, complete with many failures and weaknesses but marked with singular accomplishment and ultimate friendships.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Put Down.......2007-03-10

OK, I knew a little about Mike Austin before I read this book. This was from the peace river tape I purchased about four years ago. Mike was an amazing man and Phil Reed has done a great job capturing some of the aspects of Mike's life. In addition, there a few clues in the book on the Mike Austin Swing from Phil's pursuit of the swing. I read it from cover to cover the first time and have revisited portions of it since.

In a perfect golfing universe, every drive would sail straight and every approach would land gently on the green, at tap-in range for birdie. Of course, there's no such thing as a perfect golfing universe. The best a golfer can do is be well-prepared for the harsh realities. As Bobby Jones once noted, golf's secret is the ability to convert a potential three strokes into two. In The Scrambler's Dozen, Mike McGetrick, the 1999 National PGA Teacher of the Year, identifies 12 shots that every golfer, regardless of handicap, needs to be able to pull out of the bag to help accomplish that.

McGetrick's arsenal moves from tee to green and includes both difficult recovery shots--such as exploding from a bunker, flopping, flyers, and hanging lies--and shots designed to work a ball with purpose, not just prayer--the lag putt, the fade, the feathered iron, and the standard pitch and its variations. For each, he clearly explains why and when you need the shot, how to approach it mentally, and--via photos--the physical set-up and swing required to accomplish it. Then he offers game-filled practice drills designed to help make learning this stuff fun, and to keep you working enough to trust the shots when you need them. Once that's laid out, he carefully summarizes his instruction with bullet points that include simple--and important--swing thoughts.

"Scrambling isn't reserved only for your off-days," McGetrick stresses. "Good golfers scramble every round." The key is scrambling with confidence. McGetrick's book will certainly help you lower your score. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

In this invaluable book, Mike McGetrick, one of Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teaching Professionals in America and 1999 National PGA Teacher of the Year, shows how to make the best shot possible and shave strokes off your game. Sharing the same methods he uses when coaching some of the best players in the world, McGetrick outlines 12 basic shots you can incorporate into your game without overhauling your technique.

"Shotmaking is much more than simply curving the ball or hitting it low and high," explains Mike McGetrick, personal instructor to top golf professionals such as Juli Inkster, Brandt Jobe, and Meg Mallon. "It's understanding how the lie, the wind, the contour of the target and the hazards of the course will affect your decision making process." To reach full scoring potential on a course, you have to be a scrambler at heart, a master who can read a course's shifting challenges-from weather and terrain to pin positions-and adapt accordingly.

Following the clear advice in The Scrambler's Dozen, you will learn to be a great scrambler-to trust your decisions and your ability to execute shots to get the greatest rewards from the game. Like the pros, you too can learn when and how to chip or pitch or putt from off the green, and know how to practice so you're rarely in unfamiliar situations on the golf course. The Scramblers Dozen is the secret for squeezing every ounce out of your game and reaching your full scoring potential.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this as your second golf book.......2003-11-27

I'm a high handicapper, however, this book is concise, clear and actionable. Mike describes 12 useable shots. The descriptions are technically clear and memorable. For example, the chapter on putting was simple and to the point, the 3 steps Mike recommends have helped me see green slope. The thoughts on hitting a low trajectory shot (a low shot requires a low finish) are simple to understand and stay in your memory regardless of if you are in a forest to the side of a fairway or on the practice range.

If you are not confident being able to get the ball into the air on the golf course you need a book on basics. Otherwise, this is a really good, valuable, actionable, short read. David Perz take note (please).

5 out of 5 stars A roadmap to rapid improvement.......2003-05-23

I have read a number of books and magazine articles over the
years, but none have given me insight on what shots I need to
concentrate on most.

This book outlines the twelve most important shots and
describes in detail, how to go about accomplishing them.

This book is making me a better golfer in record time!
I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Players Manual.......2003-02-27

This is the ultimate players manual--great information in a concise and logical format. I have been searching for the perfect golf manual for years and now I have found it. Practical, insightful, brilliant in its' simplicity. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars The Book to have on golf.......2002-04-20

If there is one book to add to your golf bookshelf, this is the one. There is something to learn in every chapter and each one treats a specific point. You not only learn the basics but he shows you how through pictures and then explains in details the different aspects: setup;the swing; the strategy and the swing thoughts for each and every shot he teaches. To make it complete and very functional, he even gives you practice strategies and fundamental drills.
All in all, probably one of the best books I have read on shot making and shot shaping.

5 out of 5 stars Help to Get It Up and Down.......2001-02-21

Golfers know that to recover is what it's all about. When you don't have your A game that day, to still score takes the shots that McGentrick gives in this book and the ability to pull them off with consistency.

From playing a fade to draw, to flyer lies to flop shot to restricted swings, this book gives chapter on each of these and seven others. In each is hints on setup, swing and strategy, followed by practice drills and what I find especially useful to learning it, competitive drills, i.e. drills which give you games to get the adrenalin going and groove the shot.

Her only power is the magic her sister gives her, the power to make her sister a queen. But the sister disappears, and where one fairy tale ends, another begins. Mira is left to gather dust until a new hope arrives—a peasant girl with troubles of her own. Soon the two are on their way to find a new kind of magic, a magic that gives life instead of taking it.

5 out of 5 stars A truely original fairy tale... in the old style of the Brothers Grimm..........2007-01-12

Do you remember the magic mirror in the fairy tale, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"? Where you ever curious about where the magic mirror came from, or who was in it? Well, in this truely original fairy tale, you find out how a young witch named Mira was put into the magic mirror, and how she has been trapped there for over a hundred years. This story begins around the time of Snow White, but most of the story takes place a hundred years later, when Mira tries to find a way to escape the mirror and return to human form. This story is not a sanitized "Disney" version of a fairy tale, but a true "dark" adventure like the original fairy tales written by Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm. This fairy tale is not for the very young, or faint of heart ... but for those who yearn for unique adventure about a girl who was never shown love in her human life, but learns how to love and be loved while imprisoned in a magic mirror. The recommended age for this book is for grades 7-9, but I really wouldn't recommend this book to anyone under the age of 14, unless they where emotionally mature, because of the "dark" overtone of the story. This story is truely a "work of art" for all fans of the classic fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm.

3 out of 5 stars Fresh and unique idea, but not much else..........2006-06-11

I wasn't that into this book. The first page or so really grabbed me--I really like the way the author began it: "The bargain was quickly made between my mother and the witch..." But that was the peak of my interest. I am an obsessive fan of fantasy fiction and fairy tales, and the reason why I read this book was because the story topic intrigued me. I have never read or even heard of another book that is written from the point of view of a magic mirror, specifically the one that belonged to Snow White's stepmother. But half way through the book, I was no longer anxious to turn the pages. And I found that the end did not move me very much--or surprise me--but don't get me wrong, it had a good message about love between sisters. Perhaps the reason I was disappointed was that I was expecting a young adult novel (that's the section in which I found it in the library). I think Harrison's writing style is simple and juvenile--good for younger kids (I am 18). And a lot of the ideas in it have been done before, over and over, like the idea of swapping appearances, being victim to an arranged marriage, etc, and was there a hint of Beauty and the Beast in there too, or was that just me? Anyway, this was a rather less satisfying read for me; I probably would have enjoyed it more five years ago. I really do think it would be great for preteens and younger teens. A creative idea for a novel.

4 out of 5 stars Magic Mirror with a twist.......2006-03-11

This is the story of the Wicked Queen's magic mirror, from the story of Snow White-from the point of view of the mirror. A young girl, unattractive, unwanted by her father, stepmother, and half-siblings, she's apprenticed to the local witch, and becomes completely enchanted by the witch's other apprentice, and will do anything for her-anything at all.

The other, more talented and more ruthless, apprentice is, of course, the future Wicked Queen, and she enchants Mira into a mirror and gives her just enough magic to be useful in making and keeping her Queen, but not enough ever to escape the trap of the mirror. But Snow White is just one adventure in the long life of the mirror, who has a lot to learn not just about gaining enough magic to free herself from the mirror, but also about the moral lessons her "sister" the Wicked Queen taught her.

          Enjoyable.

          4 out of 5 stars A GREAT story!!!.......2005-06-16

This was a really great story that almost anyone can learn a good lesson from. I read it in about two days! It puts a new face on the witch queen in Snow White and of course, the magic mirror. It'll make you laugh AND cry!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for both young adult and adult readers of fantasy.......2005-04-18

Mira is a witch and so is her adopted sister, an ambitious young woman who steals life from other creatures and uses the magic to make herself more beautiful. Her thirst for more beauty is never quenched, even when she transforms Mira into the magic mirror. Using the mirror to keep herself beautiful and young, the sister becomes the witch queen. But when the queen falls, Mira is stranded in mirror form until a runaway peasant girl saves her. The peasant girl is taken in by a merchant and his daughter. Using her magic, Mira transforms the peasant girl into the merchant's daughter-and vice versa. Each girl assumes the other's role, seeing their lives from a different point of view. In a series of events, the girls and the mirror learn the meaning of trust and friendship. (M/H) Perfect for both young adult and adult readers of fantasy, MIRA, MIRROR is a gripping read with strong characters, the story of a woman who can show everyone a reflection but struggles to see herself for the person she truly is.
