    Book Description

This little volume really needs no introduction; the two sketches of which it is made explain and, I hope, justify themselves. But there is one phase of the President's many-sided character upon which I should like to lay special emphasis, namely, his natural history bent and knowledge. Amid all his absorbing interests and masterful activities in other fields, his interest and his authority in practical natural history are by no means at least. I long ago had very direct proof of this statement. In some of my English sketches, following a visit to that island in 1882, I had, rather by implication than by positive statement, inclined to the opinion that the European forms of animal life were, as a rule, larger and more hardy and prolific than the corresponding forms in this country. Roosevelt could not let this statement or suggestion go unchallenged, and the letter which I received from him in 1892, touching these things, is of double interest at this time, as showing one phase of his radical Americanism, while it exhibits him as a thoroughgoing naturalist.

    --John Burroughs (1907)--

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the 26th President of the United States (1901-1909). A hero of the Spanish-American War, he served as governor of New York (1899-1900) and was U.S. Vice President (1901) under William McKinley. He Won the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation in the Russo-Japanese War.

"John is so calm, so poised, so much at home with himself, so much a familiar spirit of the forests," wrote Walt Whitman of his friend, the naturalist and writer John Burroughs. "He is a child of the woods, fields, hills -- native to them in a rare sense (in a sense almost a miracle)."

            5 out of 5 stars Solid Resource.......2007-05-15

I purchased this book for a recent trip to Los Angeles, and found it to be a valuable resource for finding interesting hiking spots. Some photos from that trip and others can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pstao/

I would definately recommend this book for anyone with an interest in the outdoors, and exploring the natural beauty that persists throughout Southern California.

Jerry has explicit knowledge which he chronicles in this book. Each trail is well described and you are told what to bring in order to be prepared. The classification system used to classify each trail is simple to use and understand. This book is great!!!

            4 out of 5 stars Great hikes!.......2006-04-30

A bunch of great hikes for ALL fitness/experience levels. If you are 100 pounds over weight and want to start hiking there are plenty of hikes you can do!! don't let being out of shape scare you away from some of southern california's most beautiful scenery!

            4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2006-03-06

I found the book to have a generally good overview of hikes in the So Cal area, but was really hoping there would be more in Orange County. It centers around the LA area a little more than I would like... but then again it is a SOUTHERN California book and not an OC one ;)
The directions to each of the trails so far are quite accurate, except for one. On the directions to Holy Jim Falls (the waterfall that is pictured on the cover) it says the dirt road up to the parking area is OK for passenger cars. Being the owner of a passenger car... and that I tried to make this trip, I would say this is false and WOULD NOT reccomend it! We only made it half way, hiked a bit, and then turned back. We have taken the trip since in other more fit cars for the road without a problem....
But aside from that, the hikes are accurate, the maps are homely but helpful, and the book is entertaining enough to read. Surely each hiker in or coming to So Cal should have a copy.

                Book Description

'Spiritual' dialogues usually aim to guide the seeker towards enlightenment, towards escape from identification as a suffering individual. In Being: The Bottom Line, however, Nathan Gill points out that 'enlightenment' only appears significant from the viewpoint of 'me' - it's only the story of 'me' that requires enlightenment. Your true nature is Being, and Being is already all that is (even when there is seeming ignorance of that), with no requirements whatsoever.

Nathan Gill is quite simply the most consistant, non wavering, "never steps on his own toes" author one could find on this subject. He never gets off track. It seems as if most other authors on this subject tell us that "There is nothing you can do to "attain" this state, but just do this or do that and you might make it" or they tell is that even though there is "no one home", we torpedo "ourselves" by seeking. That sounds non sequitor to me. I digress. Nathan is clear and relatively easy to understand. "if you understand the subject at all"

                1 out of 5 stars Byzantium.......2007-02-10

This book possibly expresses the author's thoughts, even understanding, with some accuracy. But to someone who is not already familiar with the point-of-view being expressed it is totally useless. It is easy enough to claim some sort of affiliation with Ramana Maharshi, but presenting the view of reality that Ramana enjoyed, described and promoted is a different matter altogether. This writer seems to relish riddle mongering. He assumes an air of authority, of greatly superior wisdom and insight, but anyone accustomed to reading the prose of genuine essayists, like George Orwell, for example, will find this writing similar to an act of sexual intercourse where one of the participants is entirely imaginary.

5 out of 5 stars The end of the line.......2006-05-24

If you've really had enough of seeking, this is the book for you. With precision and clarity Nathan Gill devalues the whole business of liberation, awakening, enlightenment, to reveal simply what is. If there's a 'me' around, that's OK. If there's not a 'me' around, that's OK too. It's not necessarily blissful, it's not necessarily pleasant - but what a relief.

5 out of 5 stars Being is already the case.......2006-04-05

Being is a great word. Awareness and oneness (also good words) have more of a thing-ness about them, but being evokes BE-ing, alive-ness. This book is about the expression of being, of THIS alive-ness that is already the case.

`Being: the bottom line' is comprised of one to one dialogues (forty) compiled from meetings and correspondence. Nathan's approach is earthy, direct and precise, free from jargon and posturing. Throughout the book Nathan demonstrates that he is well equipped (and unafraid) to tackle some of the deeper and more complex themes that arise - but always with a lightness of touch and an ability to cut through any temptation towards metaphysical meandering.

It's these factors of directness and depth (an approach which Nathan shares with his mate, Leo Hartong) which help to give the book it's authentic and timeless quality.

Our true nature is always being. Whether there is ego identification or not - being is already the case (and that's the bottom line!)

This was a very interesting book. Several forms of Earth energies are covered. There is an emphasis on the system of energy leys in Scotland. The author proposes that the ability to detect such energies is inherent in the human body. He used dowsing rods to follow the leys all over the Scottish countryside.
He found that many of the ancient megalithic monuments were a part of the ley system. Also, some caves, churches, etc. are also parts of it. He even notes that modern structures sometimes modify these ancient paths of energy.
The energies of these leys can also affect human mental states and body functions. This could explain some supposedly supernatural phenomenon.
I do not regret buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful, metaphysical spiritual guide.......2003-08-09

Collaboratively written by David Cowan and Chris Arnold, Ley Lines And Earth Energies is a seminal and original guide to the energies of the Earth itself, and how those energies affect human health and well-being, as well as the effects such things have had in creating "sacred" places that simply feel special. A powerful, metaphysical spiritual guide to tapping into the infinite bounty of nature, and illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps, Ley Lines And Earth Energies is a welcome and very special addition to metaphysics, geology, and Earth Studies.

Will I find love? Where do my talents lie? Are we compatible? How can I make more money? Will I have a long and healthy life?

Now the answers to these questions and more are literally at your fingertips.

Learning palmistry, the art of analyzing the shape of the palm and the lines on it, is easy with this revolutionary new system designed for beginners. Simply look up the theme you are interested in -- love and relationships, career, talents, health, money or children -- to find one or two hand lines to investigate. Then follow the color-coded drawings to locate the line on your palm and to learn what it means. For example, changes in your career are revealed by breaks in the Line of Fate (coded purple), and the course of a love affair can be forecast by the Line of Affection (coded green). Soon you'll even be interpreting the hands of your friends and family with confidence!

I bought this book at a used book store when I was 11 years old. It was very comprehensive but still very easy to use and easy to understand. It covered everything from the most basic information to the more advanced and noteworthy details. Unfortunately when my mom found the book I was forced to give it up, but 9 years later I still remember most of what I learned from this book. I'm so thankful I finally found it, I'll never give it up again! This is a must have manual - pun intended

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2005-07-14

I bought this book from a used book store. You may think "well it must not be good if it's in a used book store" but I could see why some one would get rid of it. It's great for beginners, and it has lots of diagrams, so an advanced user might wish to sell it to get one more advanced. The best way to use this book is to write down each detail of your own hand and combine the facts revealed by your hand for better understanding. Flipping through it and comparing every line and quickly reading it isn't the way to learn so I could understand some one saying it is hard to comprehend.

4 out of 5 stars Choose this one if you want to learn palm reading quickly........2001-01-24

I have looked at at least 20 books on palmistry and chose to buy this one. I like the way it is organized in categories and love the sample palm readiings. I think it is a great book especially for people new to palmistry.

                  1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money!.......2000-06-12

This is a horrible book. The explanation of the book is hard to understand. The pictures are limited, not a wide variety. You have your 5 basic hands, that's it. It doesn't give a clear answer. For a great book about palmistry that is easy to understand try "Instant Palm Reader". If you choose to buy this book...good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......1996-06-18

                    Book Description

Hume? Yes, David Hume, that's who Jerry Fodor looks to for help in advancing our understanding of the mind. Fodor claims his Treatise of Human Nature as the foundational document of cognitive science: it launched the project of constructing an empirical psychology on the basis of a representational theory of mind. Going back to this work after more than 250 years we find that Hume is remarkably perceptive about the components and structure that a theory of mind requires. Careful study of the Treatise helps us to see what's amiss with much twentieth-century philosophy of mind, and to get on the right track. Hume says in the Treatise that his main project is to construct a theory of human nature and, in particular, a theory of the mind. Hume Variations examines his account of cognition and how it is grounded in his 'theory of ideas'. Fodor discusses such key topics as the distinction between 'simple' and 'complex' ideas, the thesis that an idea is some kind of picture, and the roles that 'association' and 'imagination' play in cognitive processes. He argues that the theory of ideas, as Hume develops it, is both historically and ideologically continuous with the representational theory of mind as it is now widely endorsed by cognitive scientists. This view of Hume is explicitly opposed to recent discussions by critics who hold that the theory of ideas is the Achilles heel of his philosophy and that he would surely have abandoned it if only he had read Wittgenstein carefully. You don't have to know much about Hume to enjoy this inventively argued, provocative, and stimulating defence of the representational theory of mind--which is looking increasingly hard to resist. LINES OF THOUGHT Philosophy books don't need to be hundreds of pages long to make a substantial contribution to the subject. This new series presents original works by leading philosophers at an affordable price and a readable length. 1 out of 5 stars I couldn't pick it up.......2001-12-28

I tried and tried to read this book, but it just didn't grab my interest. I wanted badly to like the book since it was written by a popular Unitarian Universalist minister, but I found it poorly written and not interesting.

Obviously other persons have a different view of this book, but I think it would be helpful if you read some of the pages available online before purchasing this one. That should help give you an idea of whether or not the author's writing style and the subject matter impress you.

5 out of 5 stars Timely Reading for the New Millenium.......2000-01-01

Life Lines offered an abundance of information and perspectives that are quite timely for all of us as we enter the new millenium. We are offered the opportunity for introspection and self-evaluation of our moral, ethical and spiritual fabric. Most importantly, it offers us hope that we can evolve in spite of and in celebration of our humaness.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, moving experiences of a skilled pastor.......1999-09-29

In Lifelines, the Harvard Divinity School-educated senior minister of New York City's All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church relates moving stories from his work in pastoral care, and offers a "guide for the perplexed".

I recommend this book highly to anyone looking for insights into the conondrums and common miseries of daily life.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and insightful afirmations for the real world........1998-08-04

Joyce Strum's "Love Lines" offers a practical introduction to the concept of the affirmation as a tool for self help. The affirmations in Love Lines relate easily to the world most of us live in, dealing as they do with the sources of much unhappiness that people face in their lives. Issues such as parents/dysfunctional families, body image, career, motivation and self-worth are dealt with through affirmative statements that help to center the thoughts and emotions (we are what we think we are). Ms. Strum avoids the cloying "New-Ageiness" that afflicts many self-help texts, that distances most readers who do not subscribe to that way of looking at the world.

To sum up, a good and useful book which, faithfully used, can help heal its reader.
