Over the course of 14 books, John Gierach has become the fishing buddy to countless anglers he's never met. Waterlogged and dog-eared and thrown in the back of pickup trucks, Gierach's classics Trout Bum and The View from Rat Lake gave voice to the inner wanderings and wonderings of fly fishers the world over. In Still Life with Brook Trout Gierach continues his enviable jaunts--he seems constantly to be traipsing off to some undiscovered creek, private water, or middle-of-nowhere secret spot--but this time, there's a difference. More than ever, Gierach is forced to deal with an aging body that can't quite scramble over logjams, bushwhack through the brush, or wade quite as deeply as before. Running parallel with these observations, Gierach ponders the effects of a three-year drought in the mountain West. But whether it is his aching knees or dropping levels in reservoirs, rivers, and streams, Gierach always retains hope without dismissing the often grim odds, ridiculous situations, and glum prospects so familiar to anglers. And while Gierach nurses his hope like an ember, he never abandons his appreciation for the sport's absurdity, humor, and humbling moments. He has become the master of the literary shrug, as if to say, "What can you do? Might as well go fishing." Like the best of Gierach's work, Still Life with Brook Trout mirrors the exquisitely languid pace of the sport. He meanders, explores side roads and bends in the river, and never fails to take note of "a deer crossing a meadow or a circling hawk ... even if it means missing a strike when it finally comes." Gierach is on his game here, and longtime fans will rise to this offering hook, line, and sinker. --Steve Duda
Book Description
In Still Life with Brook Trout, John Gierach demonstrates once again that fishing, when done right, is as much a philosophical pursuit as a sport.
Gierach travels to Wyoming and Maine and points in between, searching out new fly-fishing adventures and savoring familiar waters with old friends. Along the way he meditates on the importance of good guides ("Really, the only thing a psychiatrist can do that a good guide can't is write prescriptions"), the challenge of salmon fishing ("Salmon prowl. If they're not here now, they could be here in half an hour. Or tomorrow. Or next month"), and the zen of fishing alone ("I also enjoy where my mind goes when I'm fishing alone, which is usually nowhere in particular and by a predictable route"). On a more serious note, he ponders the damaging effects of disasters both natural and man-made: drought, wildfires, and the politics of dam-building, among others.
Reflecting on a trip to a small creek near his home, Gierach writes, "In my brightest moments, I think slowing down...has opened huge new vistas on my old home water. It's like a friendship that not only lasts, but gets better against the odds." Similarly, Still Life with Brook Trout proves that Gierach, like fly-fishing itself, becomes deeper and richer with time.
Customer Reviews:
Fishing for a non-fisher.......2007-08-04
I don't even fish, and I really liked the book. Partly it's because he writes so well about the places where fishing goes on and partly it's because of a delightful sense of humor. The essays create a sense of the man, too, so that you meet an interesting new character
The best kind of fly fishing book.......2007-04-03
There are authors you just have to read if you love fly fishing. Anything that comes out by John Gierach or Nick Lyons or Bill Tapply just has to be read. It's not as great as landing a lunker trout, but it's the next best thing.
John's latest is worth your time.......2007-01-12
John writes so well that it seems as if he just stumbles across his words of wisdom, comic relief, and society commentary. You find yourself thinking, "yeah, I've said that myself", although you probably haven't! There's storytelling which flows quickly, and there are those passages that you just know took time to craft. I appreciate that.
Vintage Gierach.......2006-08-26
How does John Gierach do it? This flyfishing legend keeps on writing and entertaining like no other. This book is to be read and enjoyed by all flyfishermen.
Gierach is a Genius.......2006-03-12
I've said for a few years now that John Geirach is a genius. He has that rare ability to make you feel that you are standing in the stream next to him wetting a line. Still Life with Brook Trout continues this tradition. Every time I pick up one of John's books, it's just like being on vacation. I would heartily reccommend this book and all of his others to anyone who enjoys flyfishing or those who might like to try it. He's not only a great writer, but also a great educator.

Worst place I ever went to was Heaven Lodge in Chimanimana. Abysmal experience - how on earth can you recoment it. fantastically impressed with the bushwalking company. Give them a plug, they deserve it. Chimanimani Bushwalking Co. The only reason to go there
You Just Can't Get Lost With This One..........1998-11-10
Swaney's guide to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is the best on the bookstore shelf. The level of detail is superb, from major cities to rural villages. She should consider herself more a regional geographer, as her detail concerning things like history, climate, people, and place are akin to that of one! All this and she manages to fit in the best deals on lodging, food, and travel sites, not to mention important info concerning safety and hazards associated with travel. I used this book extensively during my travels throughout last year, when I lived in Windhoek. Indeed, you can find no better than this- and the information is as good or better than what the locals give! I once had the opportunity to meet her at a hostel in Windhoek, when I was doing some academic research there, and never had the chance to tell her how much I praise this guide!

Absolute must have for visitors to Southern Africa.......1999-10-22
The book was our bible during our summer '99 holiday to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Without it we wouldn't have made it in the timeframe we had for sure. Be sure to buy the most recent version, 'cause these regions are developing faster than you can imagine. Due to the guide we discovered loads more country beauties than we would have. You'll absolutely get your money's worth.

grace happened.......2007-05-01
grace's mother is the famous movie star constance meredith. but grace doesn't want to live in the lime light, she just wants to be a normal teenager, and she wants to know who her dad is. she thinks she might finally might get some awnsers when she, tofee, camilla, and her mother go to martha's vineyard. but since her mother is taking so much time to tell her. grace desides to take matters into her own hands. this is a really good book!! i hope jan m. czech write another story about grace.
Grace happens.......2006-10-24
-Grace happens
This is about a girl who's mom is a celebrity. The fabulous author is Jan M. Czech. The main conflict is between Grace and how she "finds" her dad because she never knew him. So one day Grace and her mom "try" to take a brake from the celebrity life so they went to Constance Meredith's old house (that's her mom) the one she lived in before this new life. So they went there and Grace made a friend while she was staying there. They practically did everything together and they cooked because her friends mom was a caterer. Any way one day Grace's mom wants to reveal the family history about Grace's about dad who he is. But Grace is to mad that her mom is telling her now and not before so she goes away seeking to find clues about her dad on her own.
I liked that she used a lot of descriptive words. This was very exciting to read because it got more and more interesting every page. It was like I was in the book because at one point I felt like I was Grace experiencing the pain she had to go through. The main conflict was very interesting because Grace had the opportunity to meet her dad but instead she went away searching by herself. The ending was satisfying because Grace eventually found her dad but also disappointing because he didn't get to stay with her and Constance.
The chapters were pretty short but they had a lot in them. The author uses dialogue very precisely and also description too. She told the whole story in probably 3rd person. Which is good. Maybe the author could make the chapters a little longer. Because she actually left us in a cliffhanger mostly all the time so then it was kind of hard to stop so maybe she could make longer chapters to inform the readers what's going on then stop them for a while but no completely so they could stop but then read again later.
From a scale of 1 to 10 and 10 being the highest I would give this book a 9. Because it was sad yet happy then mad yet calm. Plus Grace would have many fight's with her mom but then once in a while they would be friends then Grace would be sad Then this big old mess I really liked it mostly because of the mood swings they had it was funny.
Finally, Jan M. Czech did a great job making this book. She should probably make another one to inform the readers about what's going on with her dad and if Grace went to a regular school or stayed there in the old house. Finally I thought this was a great book!
Grace and Family.......2006-06-07
In the novel Grace Happens by Jan Czech, the daughter of a famous actress gets to spend a summer on Martha's Vineyard. Away from the sets and the spotlight, she hopes to have a normal vacation and learn more about her family. Grace is a likeable character. I'd recommend this story to middle schoolers rather than high schoolers. Grace's choice of words, her actions, and her reactions made her seem much younger than the age she was supposed to be, fifteen. Still, the book is cute and clean. Worth a read.
Realistic.......2005-07-13

A bit of mystery, a lot of fun.......2005-06-22GRACE HAPPENS is a wonderful debut novel. The title character, Grace, is the teenage daughter of a movie star. It sounds like the perfect life, but Grace can hardly think anything is perfect when she has idea who her father is and her mother refuses talk about it. The story takes place over a summer vacation on Martha's Vinyard, as Grace slowly pieces together the mystery surrounding her birth.
Grace is an appealing main character surrounded by a warm and quirky supporting cast. The book is fast-paced, well-written, and engaging.

Best book I have read in along time.......2004-03-10
This book is DEFINATELY one of the best books I have read in along time. It will make you laugh and cry. It gives multiple examples on how satan is constantly trying to disrupt our lives and how the angels make sure he does'nt. The characters are very real and easy to relate to. This book has taught me alot about how to fight off the devil and recognize when he is trying to create problems. It is a wonderful story about how faith in God will get us through anything. After reading this story, there is no doubt in my mind that I have a guardian angel. Read this book!!! You will not regret it!!!
A note from the Author.......2004-03-06
Hi there-- this is P.M. DeMarco, author of "In The Way of Grace." Right now, you might be considering buying this book, but perhaps you are a little hesitant because you have no idea what the story is about.
I'm going to help you out a little bit. Below is the text found on the back of the book. Hopefully it will help you decide whether or not you want to plunk down your hard-earned cash for a book written by an unknown... but I promise you, you won't regret it!
Thank you for taking the time to look into "In The Way of Grace." Peace.
P.M. DeMarco
"A guardian may never force his or her charge to say anything or do anything against their will," I was reminded.
As if I needed reminding!
"The most we can hope to do is influence their hearts," said Gabriel. "And pray that they follow the correct path."
Ah yes. But what is a guardian to do when his charge is as stubborn, temperamental, and thickheaded as mine?
So wonders Sam, an angel sent on a mission to bring love into the life of his beloved young charge. Mina Lucci, a city girl with a "God problem," has never quite recovered from the death of her husband years before, and cannot yet see beyond her own tragic heartbreak.
Little does she know that her life is about to be changed forever, for God has big plans in store for her-- and a small-town sheriff.
From the bright lights of Chicago to tiny, homespun Beauregard, Mississippi, with every measure of good countered by the forces of evil along the way, Sam and his fellow guardians must do all they can to guide their charges down the path chosen for them by God Himself.
For He has chosen these people to prove once and for all that, even in this day and age, miracles do happen.
This is a story of life, love, faith, hope, and... above all else... the grace of a God who loves us.
Riveting story!.......2003-07-31
Ms. DeMarco's approach to this novel is unique, yet riveting. The plot takes several intersting twists and turns, yet remains true to its central theme. Despite the title, this is not a book written about or for those of any particular -- or any -- religious bent, but for everyone who enjoys a good thriller. Highly recommended!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2003-05-24
P.M. De Marco is a wonderful storyteller. You will not want to put this book down. It shows how things are meant to be and maybe why things happen for a reason. P.M. De Marco has a wonderful imagination and a very enjoyable way of telling you a story. It makes you believe that someone is out there helping to guide you through life.

Rebuilding Your Broken World - What Happens When Your Ideals and Desires, Plans and Strategies All Go Awry
Gordon MacDonald
Manufacturer: Oliver Nelson
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: B000VL2G14 |
Product Description
Many men and women are apparently dropping off the edges of our horizons because of deep personal tragedy or even dramatic failure. They sink into a quiet personal despair, a "robotic lifestyle" where each day becomes aimless and survival-oriented. Sometimes silently, sometimes loudly, they cry for help, and they're not heard in or out of the church. So bewildered and confused, they wander off to the side, and we ignore them - deliberately. We don't notice they're not around any longer until it is too late. The sadness is compounded because the Bible along with God's people living our biblical principles, offers a remarkable promise of rebuilding and renewal from which no one is ever exempt. Rebuilding Your Broken World offers the strength and compassion of biblical hope to those who struggle with shattered ideals.
