Very educational.......2007-08-25
This book is very educational to use in a classroom or an education focused day camp and is not an easy read as a story book at bedtime.
Not your ordinary desert book.......2004-05-12
We have been reading many different desert books for a unit study. It seemed that we kept running across the same old information in every book. Then we read this one! It tells you things that you just don't find in other books. This turned out to be our favorite book. The pictures are wonderful and it is easily understandable by young children, thought adults will learn a thing or two as well! Highly recommended.
This book was full of wonderful pictures and information.......2003-03-30
I have used this book every year as a third grade teacher. It is wonderful as a read aloud for science to illustrate how animals and plants adapt to their environment and rely on other plants and animals for survival. This is one of the best books I have ever read to my class because it is not dull science jargon but presented as the story of the life of the cactus. Don't miss this one for teaching and learning about life science in the desert.
Our third grade class loved your book........1999-11-03
Our third grade loved your book. It gave us a lot of information about the desert. The illustrations were excellent. We especilly liked the use of author techniques such as diagrams, onomatopeias, catchy title and colorful illustrations. We would love to contact Barbara Bash.

A wonderful work of beauty, this is a classic.......2004-12-24
This book affects people deeply. Certainly it did me. It is a simple and absolutely passionately beautiful account of giant trees, how they're discovered, how they're measured. Van Pelt's drawings are amazing. I think this book is a classic and I think it will live in print for many, many years.
GET THIS BOOK!!!!!.......2003-09-06
This book rocks! It inspires as well as informs! The line drawings are especially amazing. Van Pelt selects specific angles for each drawing, such that he captures the unique qualities of each individual tree. These renderings are beautiful and accurate. Each one can be studied for hours. The photographs could have been a bit more creative, but he follows an effective strategy by showing a human in most pictures. This allows the reader to understand the immense size of these giants. The text provides an excellent natural history, conveying to the reader an intertwined tale of ecology, history, and discovery. Lastly, I was especially impressed with the fact that Van Pelt included so many tree species and individuals. By doing this he has allowed us to truly appreciate the diversity, beauty and uniqueness of these amazing trees.
A Must for Tree Lovers!.......2002-01-29
This is an awesome book of personal accounts, illustrations, and photographs of magnificent individuals of Pacific coast conifers. Van Pelt knows these trees like no one else, having journied to, measured, and stood in awe at each of the giants depicted. His writes with witty reverence and from a deep understanding of the ecology of giant trees. Featured in the book are the author's beautiful line drawings of the trees, which capture the amazing structural complexity of their crowns in a way not possible with photographs. This book is a must for all tree lovers and those interested in coffee table adventuring into the last great forests of the Pacific coast.

The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest
ASIN: 0761105409 |
Book Description
Here is the story of the oldest living sequoia -- possibly the oldest living thing on earth -- whose wondrous life spans the Trojan war (it was 150 years old and 75 feet high when the Greeks delivered their gift horse), the coming of the Buddha, Christ, and Mohammed (by then, two thousand years old, over 270 feet high), the settling of America, and the 1996 Presidential election. Yes, it's still growing, high up in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Like a unique biological time-line, While a Tree Was Growing juxtaposes the life of a single tree with a chronology of world events to narrate 3,500 years of history, natural science, anthropology, and more. Large, generously illustrated two-page spreads are flanked by columns, with historic milestones on the left and a growth chart recording the treeís progress on the right. Stitched into the middle of the book is a fold-out 11O x 33O poster. Illustrated by Daniel O'Leary.

While A Tree Was Growing.......2000-05-22
A great book that teaches both the history of the world and at the same time the importance of preserving our forests. The book is about one giant sequoia and the great historical events that have occurred during its lifetime. The tree is still standing. The book covers all that the tree has had to endur (insects, fires)and while it was growing Jesus was born, Cleopatra was born, the Wright Brothers flew, man walked on the moon and we were born. Beautiful illustrations and a wonderful tear out time line.

Great Book for animal lovers.......2006-11-21
My sons both love Baby Einstein. My 3 1/2 year old is obsessed with any and all Baby Einstein movies and items. Having the books just adds a bonus to all of the fun. Because of Baby Einstein he has learned every single animal in every video and he knows the sounds they make too. Now my 16 month old likes to point to all the animals and have you tell them what they are and what they say. He will know them all in no time just like his brother. The pictures are always so pretty and clear. Fantastic book!
Failed to please.......2006-09-08
I LOVE Baby Einstein and I have been extremely happy with almost all of the DVD's, Books, CD's and Discovery Cards but this book was incredibly disappointing. The text is impossible to read smoothly. It's very choppy as if someone missed their deadline and wrote it 5 minutes before it went to print. My daughter LOVES books and being raised on Baby Einstein, she definitely has a special fondness for their characters but she has no interest in this book. The photos are vibrant and that I like a lot but it just wasn't worth buying. On the other hand, I highly recommend the Baby McDonald board book and Violet's House. Both have been memorized by our entire family and my daughter will sit still and read them over and over again.
One of the worst books ever slapped together at the last minute.......2006-07-06
It's pretty obvious the designer and the writer didn't talk to each other before this book went into production. Read about two eggs, see three eggs. Read about spiders, which are suddenly insects. Read about a frog, see some red plant that my baby loves to touch---too bad I can't tell him what it is, because the copy never mentions it. Honestly, I find this book simply horrible. I refuse to read the idiotic copy aloud anyway---"ooey gooey," my eye. And what is the deal with that Jane character....some bowlegged monkey girl who explores this ridiculous rainforest (not rain-forest, thank you very much). I hate her, and I hate the book! Boooo!
Glad I didn't spend MY money on it..........2006-06-12
My son received this book as a gift for his first birthday. I thought he'd like the touch and feel aspect, but it doesn't hold his interest, which is fine by me because I cringe every time I read it.
"Rainforest" is not a hyphenated word.
Every page beings "In the ooey gooey rain forest..." Ooey gooey?? Do we want our kids to think rainforests are gross?
The page on amphibians mentions a tree frog with suction pad toes, but none are pictured.
The page about birds talks about the hummingbird's two eggs, but three eggs are pictured.
The "insect" page talks about spiders.
Rainforest animals that would never be found together in the wild because they are from completely different parts of the world are pictured peacefully coexisting.
This is the only Baby Einstein book we own, and I sure hope the others are way better than this one. Love their CDs, but this book is horrible.
Great book!.......2006-03-03
I bought this because I was very impressed with Baby Einstein's Baby McDonald on the Farm big board book. Rainforest Discoveries has just as many bright colors to stimulate my boys' attention. I would recommend it.
Book Description
First published between 1930 and 1956, the six novels written by Agatha Christie under the name Mary Westmacott, regarded by some as the writer's finest work, show a very different side of this writer's talent. What they share with her other fiction is Christie's gift for sharp observations about people, the ambitions that drive them, their relationships, and the conflicts that erupt between them. This omnibus edition brings together three of the Westmacott novels:* Absent in the Spring - stranded between trains, Joan Scudamore finds herself reflecting upon her life, her family, and finally coming to grips with the uncomfortable truths about her life * Giant's Bread - the story of Vernon Deyre, a composer and pianist whose obsession with art with the two very different women in his life * The Rose and the Yew Tree - Isabella Charteris must choose between the expectations of her class and the possibility of loveNow available again for the first time in over a decade, the Mary Westmacott novels will surprise new readers and delight longtime fans. AUTHORBIO: Agatha Christie is the author of six novels as Mary Westmacott as well as, under her own name, eighty crime novels and story collections, fourteen plays, and several other books. She is the creator of the two most enduring figures in crime literature - Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple - as well as the author of The Mousetrap, the longest running play in the history of modern theater. She died in 1976
Customer Reviews:
Too odd.......2003-05-09
I found this book very hard to read considering all I have read are Agathas suspense novels. I was rather dissapointing to see this type of writing style. Her suspense and romantic novels are both very well written out but to see this side of her kind of ruined the whole detective novels. I wouldn't recommend this to readers who like her original style...
Another perspective from Agatha Christie........2003-03-07
Fans of Agatha Christie's mystery novels will not be disappointed in these more standard novels, which she published under the name Mary Westmacott. "Absent in the Spring" is a magnificent novel, the story of a woman unexpectedly stranded in a desert outpost with no distractions, who is forced for the first time to see herself and others objectively. A simple concept, but difficult to write. Christie handles the matter superbly, and in her autobiography, lists this as one of her favorite novels. "Absent in the Spring" is even more interesting when you consider she wrote the book in 3 days during the London Blitz!
Most of the novels Christie wrote as Mary Westmacott are semi-autobiographical, or reveal conflicts or persons present in her own life. Christie fans will want to include this collection of novels for insight into the author's life, thought processes, and internal emotional struggles. The other novels in this collection, especially "Giant's Bread", are also excellent novels, but the collection would be worth reading just for "Absent in the Spring."
A Must for Christie Fans!.......2002-10-16
A great trio of novels. Giant's Bread is her masterpiece!
Agatha's Best Work!.......2002-10-08
These novels are wonderful! In my opinion, "Giant's Bread" is her masterpiece!

A story of the human ingenuity needed to turn the Giant Pines of New England into masts for the great British Navy.
Customer Reviews:
Get this book!.......2001-11-21
An absolutely superb book about the 18th century process of selecting, felling and transporting enormous New England hardwood trees so that they might be fashioned into masts for the king's ships. This book is filled with wonderfully detailed drawings and fascinating information. An example: "A first-class British warship was larger than Faneuil Hall in Boston. It was larger than the State House at Williamsburg in Virginia, larger than any building in the colonies from Maine to Georgia." If only there were more books like this! A must for any classroom.
Diana Appelbaum thanks her readers.......2000-10-30
I have been delighted with the wonderful response that this book has elicited from readers, as well as by the generous reception that it has had among teachers, librarians and reviewers. Most recently, it has been honored by YANKEE MAGAZINE, where the editorial staff has included GIANTS IN THE LAND on a list of the best 100 books ever written for children about New England. I hope that parents who enjoy reading GIANTS IN THE LAND with their children will also enjoy reading BULLOUGH'S POND, a book for grownups published under my childhood name, Diana Muir.
Giants in the Land.......2000-02-01
I really like this book because all of it is true and it happened where I live. I like to think that the giants once grew where my house is. It is also special that the giants only grew in New England. The story is good to listen to or to read because it is telling real things in a way that is fun to hear. I particularly like the part about having to put smaller trees and branches underneath to keep it from breaking when the giant falls. My Dad and I have cut down small trees it is exciting when they fall. Learning history through books like this is great.

Wonderful story!!.......2007-08-24
After visiting this area in San Francisco, I just had to get this book! It's a wonderful primary-level story for my first graders (read-aloud).
One interpretation of the life of a tree.......2006-03-07
This book does a decent job showing how a giant sequoia grew for more than 2,000 years only to have a large tunnel carved out of the base for joy rides, causing it to topple over and die. But the book's take on history has a Christian bent, telling us how old the tree was when Jesus was born, when the Christians were being persecuted by the Romans, and when the Christian Crusades were being carried out - a focus you might want to take into consideration if you are looking for educational books about nature.
A Wonderful Book About the Giant Sequoia.......2001-07-10
This is a Wonderful book about a giant Sequoia Tree in California. The book is beautifully illustrated and tells of the beginning of life from a small seed, to the over 2000 years of life the giant tree must endure. From a small seed taking life, a "Time Line of World History" is also displayed along the bottom of each page. We found this book originally in a bookstore at the Sequoia National Park Visitors in California. Although this book is intented for younger children, it has an underlying message for adults. My children, and my family enjoy reading this short story over and over again.

The Wild Trees: A Story of Passion and Daring
ASIN: 1550173634 |
Book Description
As a child growing up in the Fraser Valley, Al Carder was awed by the ancient Douglas fir forests and spent hours staring up at trees that commonly stood over 300 feet high. Sixty years later, after retiring from his career as a plant biologist, he set out to find the trees that had transfixed him in his youth. Discovering many of them felled by storms or loggers, he determined to document those that were left before they could vanish from our memories as well as from our landscapes. The catalogue Dr. Carder compiled is a definitive record of the West's record-sized trees of all species, including such legends as BC's 400-plus foot Lynn Valley fir and California's massive redwood, the Eureka Tree. Next, Dr. Carder set out to answer the question, how do the giant trees of the West stack up against the great trees of the world?
The result, Giant Trees of Western America and the World, reveals outstanding examples from each of the most noteworthy tree species Dr. Carder found--including some that are thousands of years old and over 300 feet high. Featuring more than 40 scale drawings, this collection of giant trees outlines the intriguing characteristics of each species, such as the resiliency of the English oak, which can endure lightning strikes and widespread rot for hundreds of years and still thrive; and the "grotesque" appearance of the African "upside-down tree," the baobab, whose width can exceed its height. Dr. Carder also describes the histories of famous trees, including the stump of a BC western red cedar so wide that eight men and women danced a quadrille on it in 1887, and the Sicilian Tree of 100 Horses, well-known for sheltering Joan, Queen of Aragon and 100 of her horsemen in a storm. Carder's enthusiasm and expertise informs and entertains even as he urges us to appreciate and protect what is left of these fascinating "monsters of the past."

A 'must' for any who would discover the history and nature of the West's last stands of big trees........2007-01-07
Al Carder spent sixty years as a plant biologist but never forgot the ancient Douglas fir forests which enthralled him as a child: when he retired he set out to find the trees, only to discover many had been felled by loggers or storms. GIANT TREES OF WESTERN AMERICA AND THE WORLD is his attempt to document those which remain and provides a catalog of the West's big trees of all species, from BC's 400-plus foot Lynn Valley fir to the massive redwoods of California. Some are thousands of years old and over 300 feet high: the author's scale drawings accompany discussions of observation history and plant biology. A 'must' for any who would discover the history and nature of the West's last stands of big trees.
