Book Description
In response to many requests, the Third Edition of A Primer of Population Genetics has been dramatically shortened and streamlined for greater accessibility. Designed primarily for undergraduates, it will also serve for graduate students and professionals in biology and other sciences who desire a concise but comprehensive overview of the field with a primary focus on the integration of experimental results with theory. The abundance of experimental data generated by the use of molecular methods to study genetic polymorphisms sparked a transformation in the field of population genetics. Present in virtually all organisms, molecular polymorphisms allow populations to be studied without regard to species or habitat, and without the need for controlled crosses, mutant genes, or for any prior genetic studies. Thus a familiarity with population genetics has become essential for any biologist whose work is at the population level. These fields include evolution, ecology, systematics, plant breeding, animal breeding, conservation and wildlife management, human genetics, and anthropology. Population genetics seeks to understand the causes of genetic differences within and among species, and molecular biology provides a rich repertoire of techniques for identifying these differences.
The book is organized as a user's guide to population genetics.
Chapter 1 starts with the basic concepts of molecular genetics and examines the principal methods by which DNA (or proteins) can be manipulated to reveal genetic polymorphisms in any population. Chapter 1 also includes the principles of population genetics underlying the organization of genetic variation in populations, with special emphasis on random mating, linkage equilibrium and disequilibrium, and inbreeding.
Chapter 2 examines the evolutionary processes that can change allele frequencies, including mutation, migration and population admixture, natural selection of various types, and random genetic drift. This chapter also includes an elementary explanation of the diffusion equations as used in population genetics.
Chapter 3 is the core of molecular population genetics. It includes the analysis of nucleotide polymorphism and diversity based on coalescents, patterns of change in nucleotide and amino acid sequences with special emphasis on codon usage bias and amino acid polymorphisms, inferences based on comparisons of levels of polymorphism and divergence, molecular phylogenetics, and the population dynamics of transposable elements.
Chapter 4 focuses on complex traits whose expression is influenced by multiple genes and environmental factors. It examines genetic effects on the components of phenotypic variation and the correlations between relatives, the evolution of quantitative traits in natural populations, and comes full circle with the use of molecular polymorphisms and candidate genes in the identification of quantitative trait loci underlying complex inheritance.
As for mathematical rigor, while there are some equations, the emphasis is on explanation rather than derivation. Only elementary algebra is necessary to follow most of the material, but a familiarity with basic calculus is helpful for understanding diffusion equations, Poisson random fields, and complex threshold traits. Mathematical symbols are used consistently throughout the book, and when results from the theoretical literature are quoted, the original symbols have been changed as necessary to maintain consistency.
Modern population genetics makes liberal use of acronyms-these are all defined in the text, and their interrelations and implications are discussed. For ease of reference there is a glossary of acronyms and other common abbreviations used in population genetics. The text also includes numerous practical examples showing how the theoretical concepts are applied to actual data, as well as chapter-end problems.

Good for general information.......2007-07-17
I studied population genetics as a graduate student, and decided to get this book, literally as a "primer" to the field of population genetics. I refer to it every now and then, and would recommend it for those who want to get a general and very broad overview of population genetics. As I read a lot of primary literature, I think it would have been more helpful if the book cited more references, or active research in the field. Overall, though, a very nice concise book on population genetics. It definitely serves as a primer, rather than an overall tell-all, or comprehensive tale of the field.

Book Description
This book covers basic concepts in population and quantitative genetics, including measuring selection on phenotypic traits. The emphasis is on material applicable to field studies of evolution focusing on ecologically important traits. Topics addressed are critical for training students in ecology, evolution, conservation biology, agriculture, forestry, and wildlife management.
Many texts in this field are too complex and mathematical to allow the average beginning student to readily grasp the key concepts. A Primer of Ecological Genetics, in contrast, employs mathematics and statisticsfully explained, but at a less advanced levelas tools to improve understanding of biological principles. The main goal is to enable students to understand the concepts well enough that they can gain entry into the primary literature. Integration of the different chapters of the book shows students how diverse concepts relate to each other.

Easy to Understand Textbook.......2006-11-06
This is a great textbook that could easily be used in any evolution or genetics class. It clearly describes issues like evolution and natural selection in the context of ecological genetics. The examples are interesting and stay in the reader's mind, and the problem sets and online answers are a great resource. This book also serves as a handy reference guide anytime you need to find a formula or definition. It's appropriate for upper level undergraduate courses or introductory graduate courses.
Excellent overview of ecological genetics!.......2005-04-29
I am a graduate student studying behavioral ecology. I have taken courses in ecological genetics and evolutionary ecology. Most professors don't use a text book of any sort when teaching on these topics. This book is an excellent reference for learning the fundamentals about these topics. It includes current and classic examples from the primary literature as well as a carefully constructed glossary of terms. I highly recommend this resource to both professors teaching courses to upper level undergraduates and graduate students!

Book Description
Five-Star Basketball Camps have long been synonymous with quality basketball instruction -- some of the best players in the world have been Five-Star campers: including Michael, Patrick, Isaiah, Moses, Christian, Alonzo, Grant, Stephon, The Rainman, Elton, Allan, Jayson and Vince! In 1999 eight former Five-Star Campers were selected as NBA first round draft picks: Elton Brand, Steve Francis, Richard Hamilton, Ron Artest, Trajan Langdon, Dion Glover, Corey Maggette and Jumaine Jones! As a longtime leader in basketball instruction, Five-Star feels it must continue in its quest to educate young players about their sport. About 20 years ago, Five-Star published a book based on the drills and teachings of their boys' camps Five-Star Basketball Drills, that has become an essential part of every coach's library. In 2000, Five-Star compiled and produced the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art collection of drills by girls' and women's coaches ever assembled. Ten thousand copies were sold in the first two years of its publication. In 2003, we are pleased to announce the publication of an updated version of Five-Star Girls' Basketball Drills with more of what was loved in the first edition: more great drills, more great coaches, more information on how to make the most of your playing time as a player and how to get the most out of your team if you are a coach!
Customer Reviews:
good practice material.......2007-05-15
There are a great variety of drills from all over the country and different programs, and they encompass every skill development need and many possible numbers of players I could be working with at any one time. It is a great boost to my normal practice plan and drills.
A Five-Star in Your Basketball Coaching Library.......2005-01-26
Join some of the nation's finest womens' coaches as they share the drills they use at the most premiere women's camp in the country. The book contains ten chapters (over 100 Drills) that examines everything from nutrition to skill development. Coaches sharing drills include Tara Van Derveer, Joe Ciampi, Matt Brzycki, Kristie Curry, and more.
If you truly understand basketball this book is even better than the First Edition. Although in-depth, this book is not complicated or hard to understand. It is a user friendly resource, that any coach or player, should possess. This book is a must for the beginner, intermediate and/or advanced player/coach.
Many Great Drills.......2005-01-26
I couldn't be happier with this book. It gave me many drills to use with my team from some of the best coaches in the game.
It's a great addition to any serious coach's library.

Ignore the One-star Reviews.......2007-09-15
First of all, you should ignore all the one-star reviews of this book. Those reviews criticize the MLA, not the book. The book itself is really good. One of my English professors recommended it to our class. She also said that every English major should have a copy of it. I had always used Diana Hacker's book in other classes. After she recommended it, I decided to check it out at the bookstore. After skimming through it, I decided to buy it. It was so much easier to follow than Hacker's book. I will use it in the future. Gibaldi devotes an entire chapter just to plagiarism (and how to avoid it).

The book came in great shape. I would order over and over again. I was able to get the book at a steep discount.
immeasurably helpful.......2007-08-27
My copy of the handbook is well-worn and probably older than most of the people on-line trying to buy this book right now, but I still remember how useful it was to me.
We were forced to purchase this book in high school in the early 90s. It was the format in which all papers were required to be written. While at first tedious, learning this system eventually made writing any paper really, really easy.
When I got to college, I was leaps and bounds ahead of the other students who had not learned this format. There were several occasions in which my essays were copied by the professors to use as an example of "the right way to write a paper." Because writing papers did not intimidate me, I took 4 times the required writing component courses in college.
Absolutely buy this book and refer to it often. Very rarely does it not have the answer you're looking for (that was really awesome, because nothing is more frustrating than looking at a manual for an answer it doesn't have).

A Woman's Point of View.......2006-08-01
Here's a review of this book from a (former) single-mom: WOW! This book is so on the mark. Only inspiration from the Holy Spirit can truly explain how Ms. McMenamin has been able to illustrate the experience of women who find themselves alone (in one way or another)ao accuratley. Cindi has a good grasp on scriputal principles, and so this is a book that I use for my Single Mothers' Support Group/ Bible study. I have devleoped supplemental study guides for each chapter that my group member have found to be helpful. We have truly enjoyed the book, and found it to be helpful toward the Spiritual Formation of many of the group members.
Another great book for women.......2003-02-01
Cindi has written another remarkable book. Like "Heart Hunger" her focus is on the personal loving relationship we can have with God. She also includes lots of Scripture to assure the reader that this is not "psychobabble" but her words have solid spiritual grounding.
What is new with this book is the hours Cindi has spent interviewing women who have walked alone or are walking alone. Some of the women share their answers and discoveries. Others describe what their alone-ness feels like and the questions that they have. Additionally Cindi looks hard at Deborah, Hagar, Leah and other women in the Bible to see what their lives have to tell us.
This is a practical and spiritual book about women who are alone: single parent, single woman, married to a nonbeliever, married to a believer but missing that idealic "couple worship" time, alone in a difficult trial, restless for something different, a dreamer with little or no suppot but a definite call from God for a ministry.
Cindi explores the pain, the reasons, the benefits, the growth, the messages, etc. of being alone. Things I surely had not considered.
I feel prepared for the next inevitable time I encounter a time when I feel alone by circumstances or not feeling understood by anyone. I feel prepared to help other women I know who are looking for some Christian counsel.
I was also encouraged to hear other women talk about the difficulties of being alone and knowing that I was not the only woman that felt some of these things.
Her final chapter about making "alone" time to be with God was very on the mark and a good finale!

A let-down.......2007-04-13
I love Gerry & the Pacemakers. I collect biographies and this one was definitely "lighter than air". Typically in a biography (especially a BAND biography) you get to read about the interaction with the bandmembers, how they met, how they fought, how they split up... we want dirt you know? The sex the drugs and the rock 'n roll? Well there's none of that here. Zippo. In all fairness this book is NOT about Gerry AND THE PACEMAKERS, it's about GERRY. In that sense, the book is fair. It's so one-sided though, it reads as if he's the only inhabitant of planet Earth. Perhaps it's a well-raised English characteristic that unless others want their lives published, we'll walk a wide berth around that topic, but there's no meat whatsoever here. He talks a little about his relationship with is manager (Brian Epstein) and he talks a bit about his friendship with Lennon; he tends to draw comparisons between his band and the Beatles, especially during the early `60's, and he talks a fair amount about his charity work, but as far as "others" are concerned, that's pretty much it. His personality bleeds through his writing, so that's neat, he covers his childhood fairly well - the jobs he held, his relationship with his parents... hardly a word on his own brother though, like he was never in the house or something. I dunno - I've read so much better as far as biographies go, I was really disappointed, both as a fan and as a collector of biographies. You know how much I PAID for this book? Something ridiculous like $80! You could say I was expecting a good return on my investment! All I got was a relatively slender hard cover book with two small segments of mostly black & white photos, and what I described earlier.
Check out his website, I say; save yourself a lot of money. It's probably just as informative as his book, and all the pictures that are in the book are on his webpage - it's a no-brainer.

Customer Reviews:
Small book with a powerful message.......2007-09-25
Sage and smudging is much more than just burning some leaves in a dish. Silver Wolf explains the plant, its uses, the ceremonies, and the reverence it and Mother Earth should be given. This tiny book is worth twice the money in my opinion. Celts were also invaded many times by other nations. We nearly lost our language, much of our culture, all of our sacred ceremonies, many traditions, and most of our verbal history. It is known we used to burn juniper and other herbs as smudge. In many ways we have suffered the same plight as the American Indians. Silver Wolf Walks Alone has helped this old Celt (me) along his own path of spiritual discovery. I am grateful. Slainte.
Wonderful introduction to the healing power of sage.......2005-05-22
Author Silver Wolf Walks Alone created a book which is easy to read and understand. Beginning with her own experiences with sagebrush use and its healing abilities, she later shares spiritual messages she received during meditations with the sagebrush and through using it in her personal life. She even explains how to select sage in the wild.
After reading this book three years ago I bought a prepackaged ceremonial sage stick and performed the first smudging of my home. I knew nothing about sage and did not know what to expect, doing it more out of curiosity than anything else. Based on what occurred afterward, I smudge our home at least once a year. A few days after the first smudging, my husband was diagnosed with colon cancer. He immediately underwent treatment (traditional medicine methods) and has been subsequently healed. On four other occasions after I have smudged our home, a family member was found to have some major disease or medical condition requiring immediate attention. In each case the person has been healed and is completely well now. Coincidence or something more? We are beginning to wonder. . . If this works, talk about an easy way to drive out unsavory spirits!
Even readers who are skeptical of the healing power of sage will appreciate the many beautiful stories and observations about Native American healing methods and ceremonies which the author has included. In short, the information and insights gained were well worth the nominal price of the book!
Explains what other books don't explain.......2003-05-26
This is the encyclopedia of sage. It explains that there are different kinds of sage for different spiritual and healing purposes. I hadn't seen that in any other book; most of them just lump all sage together under the title "sage" and leave it at that.
The author also gives extensive information on gathering sage (sagebrush is what she is taking about) from the wild.
Where she may lose some readers is with her lengthy attempt, which covers most of the book, to explain her sage-based spirituality. You may understand what she says or you may not. The book (really a pamphlet) is small, short, and inexpensive enough where it doesn't matter. Anyone reading this book will understand the nuts-and-bolts information about sage and its spiritual and healing uses. If that's your reason for buying the book, you won't be disappointed.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Higly recommended, emotionally engaging book!.......2005-08-29
This was an outstanding and emotional story of forgiveness and of learning to forgive yourself. It's about overcoming childhood problems and mistakes and forging ahead to find love and happiness again. It's not just a sappy romance story though, there's quite a lot of mystery, sabatoge, adventure and revenge involved too. I respected Rhys from the outset and couldn't help liking Brina and all the secondary characters (except John, of course). Their story captivated me and they'll remain in my thoughts for days to come.
Excellent offering from a favourite writer.......2004-08-15
I've been a fan of PDR for years and years and think she creates the most wonderful characters. She's probably the master of the damaged hero (well maybe co-master with Gayle Wilson). Rarely has she disappointed me. I particularly enjoyed her latest offering because it was in the longer format that category fiction is denied.
This is a story of revenge, hatred, and old animosities made to come right by love, tolerance, reparation and forgiveness. By examining the heart and soul of a man tormented by a crime he perhaps did not truly commit (we are kept guessing), PDR is able to evoke the meaning of true love in both the sexual and non-sexual way. Rhys Hazard is a man who feels undeserving of love and comfort who has the great good fortune to meet a woman who can offer him both and by doing so achieves a level of love and completion for herself. Although events conspire against them, their regard for each other makes them complete.
Excellent story from a much admired author. Please can we have her next one soon?

NEVER WALK ALONE - A skillful blend of poignancy & passion!.......2003-06-27
"Beloved, best-selling,romance author, Paula Detmer Riggs will win even more readers' hearts with her absolutely wonderful contemporary, NEVER WALK ALONE for Onyx in June 2003. Ms. Detmer Riggs known for dealing with tough issues in her storylines deftly handles several in this endearing novel. Millionaire mogul, Rhys Hazard decides to help save the flooded small town of Osuma, Washington by expanding his trucking empire there. Not intending to go there himself, Rhys is forced to return to his hometown and relive his tragic past when his trucking foreman is injured in a car crash. Rhys knows all about terrible car accidents since he caused one as a teenager which killed two young children and a schoolbus driver. Rhys was severely injured and sentenced to four years in prison. When bed-and-breakfast owner, Brina Sullivan first meets her new tenant, Rhys Hazard, she is instantly attracted to him despite his physical disability and brusque demeanor. Little does this divorced mother of two know that Rhys Hazard is really Mick Sullivan, her ex-husband's brother and the man responsible for her brother's death years ago. What a rare treat it is to find an author who is able to skillfully blend poignancy with passion. Like the Rogers and Hammerstein song, "Never Walk Alone" Paula Detmer Riggs' novel, NEVER WALK ALONE should become a classic!"

A winning drama.......2003-06-12
To many of the residents of Osuma, Washington, the name Michael Sullivan means loathing. Fifteen years ago, he ran a red light, plowed into a school bus, and killed two students and the driver. Although he insisted the bus driver ran the light, Michael was convicted and served time. After his release his adopted father J.T. told him to leave town. An angry Michael never looked back.
Over the years, using the name Hazard, Michael built up a powerful hauling business, North Star Trucks, located in Phoenix. When his dad's company teeters on bankruptcy, he buys the firm to convert it into a northwest trucking firm. However, he is forced to take charge of the transition when his friend chosen to run the show is severely injured in a car wreck. In Osuma, Michael meets his young niece and nephew and the ex-wife of his brother. As the little girl hooks him, he and Brina Sullivan fall in love, but one of the three dead people from his accident is her brother.
NEVER WALK ALONE is at its best when the lead couple deals with their growing attraction to one another somewhat fostered by a little child who showers love on Michael. When the tale spins into a drug running intrigue, the subplot takes away from the heartfelt intensity of the prime theme of can Brina forgive the man she loves for killing someone else she cherished? Still this is a strong contemporary romance that leaves the audience to wonder if time can heal all wounds.
